TRANSACTIONS Recently signed non-drafted free agent LHP Michael Boyle was assigned to Ft. Myers. So was MLB veteran RHP Brock Stewart who has worked his way back to affiliated ball after recovering from injuries the past few seasons? SAINTS SENTINEL Iowa 6, St. Paul 5 Box score Ronny Henriquez has been coming out of the bullpen for the Saints the past couple of months, generally still working multiple innings situations. He returned to the starting rotation this week and put together arguably his best start of the season. The right-hander gave up one run on three hits over five innings. He struck out six batters, and maybe most important for his development, he walked none. The bullpen came on and had some moments. Juan Minaya recorded the first two outs in the sixth inning. But, he gave up one run on two walks. Austin Schulfer came on and got the final out of that inning. Jharel Cotton gave up a run on one hit and one walk in the seventh inning. Heading into the bottom of the eighth inning, the Saints held a 5-3 lead. Jovani Moran came on and struck out two in the eighth inning. Unfortunately, he gave up three runs on two hits and two walks, and a hit batter to blow the save and take the loss. The outing bumps his Saints season ERA up to 6.00. Just 15 of his 31 pitches were strikes. There are openings in the Twins bullpen, and he certainly isn’t putting up the Triple-A numbers to force the Twins’ hand. Matt Wallner went 2-for-4 with a walk and his sixth double since joining the Saints. Jermaine Palacios went 2-for-5. Nash Knight went 2-for-4. WIND SURGE WISDOM Frisco 2, Wichita 1 Box Score Lefty Kody Funderburk gave up two runs in the third inning, and that was it for the Frisco run-scoring on this night. Unfortunately, it was one run more than the Wind Surge were able to muster. Funderburk gave up those two runs on two hits and two walks. He struck out four. The bullpen followed with four scoreless, hitless innings. Denny Bentley walked one and struck one out over two innings. Alex Phillips and Steven Cruz each worked one inning. Cruz struck out two batters. The Wind Surge batters had twice as many hits as Frisco, but just half as many runs. Wichita had four hits, but the lone run came in the top of the seventh inning in the form of Jair Camargo’s eighth Double-A home run. Austin Martin found three different ways to get on base. He was hit by a pitch, walked, and had a single. He also stole his 31st bag. KERNELS NUGGETS Lake County 1, Cedar Rapids 5 Box Score Cedar Rapids got some great pitching and kept the offense rolling, scoring their five runs in four different innings. Let’s start on the mound where David Festa improved to 7-2 with a 2.25 ERA with 5 2/3 scoreless innings. He gave up two hits, no walks, and he struck out six batters. Matt Mullenbach got four of the five batters he faced out. He did hit one batter. Bobby Milacki struck out four batters over the final two innings. The lone run allowed came on a ninth-inning home run. It’s been a tough season for outfielder Willie Joe Garry. He missed more than two months with injury, but since his return, the speedster has been playing very well. On this night, he went 3-for-4 with a single, double, and a home run. He drove in two of the Kernel runs and scored three runs. Jake Rucker went 2-for-3 with a walk and was hit by a pitch. If not the fewest in the league, the Minnesota Twins big-league club has very stolen bases. On Friday night, infielder Mikey Perez stole his 12th base since joining the Kernels. He had 32 stolen bases in Ft. Myers earlier in the season. Here are the organization’s Top 10 leaders in Stolen Bases in 2022: Mikey Perez - 44 DaShawn Keirsey, Jr. - 34 Austin Martin - 32 Michael Helman - 30 Yasser Mercedes - 30 Will Holland - 26 Daniel Ozoria - 20 Anthony Prato - 20 Luis Baez - 19 Noah Miller - 19 MUSSEL MATTERS Lakeland, Fort Myers (Game Suspended in the 3rd inning) Box Score The Mighty Mussels played two games on Thursday but only completed two innings on Friday night due to rain. We’ll have more on this game when it is completed (hopefully on Saturday), but we’ll show you a little of what happened. 30-year-old Brock Stewart started for the Mussels and went the first two innings. He gave up two runs on just one hit. Immediately following a hit batter in the second innings, he gave up a home run to Mike Rothenberg. But all that is the background to a potentially great story. Stewart was drafted by the Dodgers in the 6th round in 2014 out of Illinois State. Just two years after signing, he made his big-league debut. Between 2016 and 2019, he pitched in 36 games for the Dodgers, including 11 starts. He went 6-3 with a 6.05 ERA over 105 2/3 innings. When the Dodgers let him go, the Blue Jays claimed him and he went 4-0 over 10 late-season appearances. After that season, he was selected by the Cubs in the Rule 5 draft, but they let him go in late May of 2020 as the season was in doubt. He pitched in six games for the Chicago Deep Dish of the City of Champions Cup League. The Dodgers signed him before the 2021 season, but he had Tommy John surgery in May of 2021 and rehabbed the rest of the season. He hadn’t pitched at all this year either, but after a tryout, the Twins signed him in mid-July to a minor league deal. Maybe it’s a long shot, but maybe he works his way back and gets to the big leagues in a bullpen role. Those are the kind of stories that are fun to tell when a game is suspended in the bottom of the third. Michael Boyle pitched a scoreless top of the third. He is 28 years old and hasn’t pitched since 2019 with the Dodgers’ Double-A affiliate in Tulsa. He’s healthy and attempting to come back. Hopefully we’ll continue to write about him the next year or so and get to know more about his story too. Noah Cardenas hit a solo home run in the second inning, his ninth of the year. In the bottom of the third inning, Misael Urbina led off with a double. Ben Ross drove him in with a double. One batter later, Ross stole third base and then scored on a Cardenas single. Kala’i Rosario followed with an RBI double, his 20th two-bagger of the season. And that’s when the game was delayed by rain. The teams will attempt to finish this game as part of a modified doubleheader on Saturday late afternoon. That will be a nine-inning game. The regularly-scheduled game will then be a seven-inning game. The #MNTwins broke their six-game losing streak with a big win at home against the Giants. There were some terrific starts on the mound in the Twins minor leagues too, and one speedster was a triple away from the cycle. See what all happened in the Twins system on Friday. Twins Minor League Report (7/25): Colina Cruises to Complete Game
Seth Stohs posted an article in Minors
Find out everything that happened happened in the Twins system on Thursday, starting with the transactions of the day. TRANSACTIONS OF Byron Buxton was activated from the Injured List with OF Jake Cave optioned to Rochester. LHP Devin Smeltzer was optioned to Rochester. RHP Sean Poppen was recalled. The Twins traded Pensacola catcher Brian Navarreto to the New York Yankees organization for cash considerations. The Twins acquired RHP Jeremy Bleich from the Boston Red Sox for cash considerations. The 32-year-old debuted last year with two innings with the A’s (2 ER, 1 out). With all of the Red Wings starters bouncing from Rochester to the Twins, they just need some arms. Eden Prairie RH RP Adam Bray was promoted to Rochester. C Ryan Jeffers and RHP Jhoan Duran were promoted to Pensacola. C/1B Chris Williams came off of the Cedar Rapids Injured list and was promoted from the Kernels to the Miracle. RED WINGS REPORT Rochester 7, Norfolk 9 Box Score The Red Wings fell behind early after a five-run top of the first. However, a Jaylin Davis two-run single scored two runs to cap a four-run bottom of the 8th for the Red Wings to tie the game at 7-7. But the lead didn’t last for long, and the Wings took a loss. DJ Baxendale started a bullpen game for the Red Wings (as several of their starters are currently with or returning from the Twins). He gave up six runs on eight hits (including 3 HR) over the first three innings. He walked two and struck out three. Jake Reed came on and tossed three scoreless, hitless innings. He walked one and struck out two batters. Zack Littell came on and gave up an unearned run over this two innings. Gabriel Moya came on for the ninth inning with the game tied and gave up a two-run homer to Orioles’ top prospect Ryan Mountcastle. Nick Gordon led the offense. He went 3-for-4 with a walk and his fourth homer of the season. Alejandro de Aza and Wynston Sawyer each went 2-for-4 with a walk. Sawyer added his 17th double. Zander Wiel added his 27th home run. https://twitter.com/RocRedWings/status/1154422161442004992 BLUE WAHOOS BITES Pensacola 2, Mobile 1 Game 1 - Box Score It got interesting late, but Edwar Colina completed the seven-inning game for the Blue Wahoos on Thursday. Obviously that is important when it occurs during a double header. In his second start since his promotion to Pensacola, Colina came into the final inning with a shutout. He got the first two batters out, but then he issued a walk and a single. The Mobile run then scored on a passed ball which also put the tying run into scoring position. But he got a fly out to end the game. Colina went all seven innings (101 pitches, 70 strikes) and gave up only the unearned run on three hits. He walked one and struck out ten batters. It’s also fun to see how a pitcher does against top prospects. Jo Adell is the Angels top prospect and a consensus Top 10 prospect nationally. Colina go Adell out all three times he came to the plate and struck him out twice. Obviously three plate appearances fits the definition of Small Sample Size, but it does show Colina’s upside. The Wahoos scored both of their runs in the first innings. Alex Kirilloff led off with a single and stole second base. With two outs, Mark Contreras singled in Kirilloff. Ben Rortvedt followed with a run-scoring double. Contreras and Rortvedt each went 2-for-4. Rortvedt hit his fourth and fifth doubles. Pensacola 3, Mobile 2 Game 2 - Box Score Ryan Jeffers was called up to the Wahoos earlier in the day, and after starting out 0-for-3 with two strikeouts, he got one more opportunity. In the bottom of the 7th inning, Trevor Larnach reached on a two-out error. Jeffers came up, fell behind 0-2, and then drilled a double to left field that scored Larnach from first to end the game and the doubleheader. https://twitter.com/BlueWahoosBBall/status/1154599156989792256 The Blue Wahoos scored twice in the fifth inning and back-to-back RBI singles from Alex Kirilloff and Lewin Diaz. It was a bullpen game for Pensacola. Anthony Vizcaya started and gave up just one hit over three scoreless innings. He walked three and struck two batters out. Hector Lujan came on and was charged with two runs on three hits and two walks and a hit batter in an inning and a third. Tom Hackimer came into the 5th inning with the bases loaded and one out and got out of it. He worked 2 2/3 innings and gave up just one hit. He struck out two without walking anyone, though he did hit three batters. MIRACLE MATTERS Ft. Myers 3, Lakeland 2 (10 innings) Box Score Royce Lewis provided the Miracle with their first run of the night with a first-inning home run, his 10th of the season. He came to the plate with the bases loaded in the bottom of the 10th inning. He hit a fly ball down the right field line for a game-winning sacrifice fly. https://twitter.com/JimCrikket/status/1154568573727182849 Tyler Watson started for the Miracle. The left-hander was very good. He gave up just one run on four hits over the first seven innings. He struck out five batters without walking any. Johan Quezada came on and pitched a strong eighth inning, flashing 101 on the radar gun. However, he was charged with a ninth-inning run that tied the game. He gave up four hits, walked one and struck out two while recording four outs. Calvin Faucher got the final two outs of the ninth inning and then threw a scoreless top of the 10th. Gabriel Maciel went 2-for-5 in the game. Jacob Pearson had the only other extra base hit, his third double since joining the Miracle recently. KERNELS NUGGETS Cedar Rapids 6, Wisconsin 1 Box Score Luis Rijo was on his game again on Thursday night. The right-hander, acquired last year at the trade deadline from the Yankees, gave up just one run on four hits over the first seven innings. He struck out eight and didn’t walk anyone. https://twitter.com/jeje66/status/1154565160842989569 The Kernels got things going with four runs in the first inning. Trevor Casanova singled in a run and then Wander Javier drilled a three-run homer. It was his sixth of the season. Spencer Steer went 2-for-4 with his first triple. Javier added a single as well. E-TWINS E-NOTES E-Twins 9, Princeton 4 Box Score Elizabethton got off to a fast start and continued it throughout the game. Willie Joe Garry, Jr., led the way. He went 2-for-4 with a walk, his sixth double and his third home run. Matt Wallner had two doubles on the night. Janigson Villalobos hit his third homer, and Will Holland added his second home run. Andriu Marin started and was charged with three runs on five hits over 4 1/3 innings. He walked two and struck out six. Frandy Torres struck out three batters over the next 2 2/3 innings. He gave up just one hit. Erik Cha worked the final two innings. He gave up a run on four hits. He struck out three batters. GCL TWINS TAKES GCL Twins, GCL Orioles Box Score Game Postponed by Rain. This has to be a difficult time of the season for players who hear their names in trade rumors. While it’s easy to say that you can shut that out of your mind during the game, it is impossible. In most of the last decade, the Twins have been sellers. This year, the Twins appear to be buyers. That means, the minor leaguers are likely hearing their names flying through the internet. It has to be a distraction for anyone in the Twins top 50-60 prospects because that kind of news can come at any time right up to (and even for a few moments after) the deadline next week. But the games continue, and on Thursday, there was a lot of action throughout the system. Sure, the GCL Twins, but the Pensacola Blue Wahoos made up for that with a doubleheader. Rochester had a big comeback. Pensacola had a complete game, and then got a walk-off win too. One top prospect had a home run and provided the extra-inning, game-winning RBI for the Miracle. The Kernels got another great start from a player the organization acquired at last year’s deadline. Elizabethton got a big win too.Find out everything that happened happened in the Twins system on Thursday, starting with the transactions of the day. TRANSACTIONS OF Byron Buxton was activated from the Injured List with OF Jake Cave optioned to Rochester.LHP Devin Smeltzer was optioned to Rochester. With all of the Red Wings starters bouncing from Rochester to the Twins, they just need some arms.Eden Prairie RH RP Adam Bray was promoted to Rochester.C Ryan Jeffers and RHP Jhoan Duran were promoted to Pensacola.C/1B Chris Williams came off of the Cedar Rapids Injured list and was promoted from the Kernels to the Miracle.RED WINGS REPORTRochester 7, Norfolk 9 Box Score The Red Wings fell behind early after a five-run top of the first. The Kernels got things going with four runs in the first inning. There were plenty of exciting performances on the farm today in the Twins organization. Jaylin Davis has been a man on a mission since reaching Triple-A and his torrid pace didn’t end tonight. Willie Joe Garry Jr. was perfect at the dish for Elizabehton, and more than a couple of starters put up good efforts to lift their clubs. Read more about it below.TRANSACTIONS Rochester Red Wings ADD OF Alejandro De Aza signed by Minnesota RED WINGS REPORT Rochester 5, Norfolk 4 Box Score Lewis Thorpe was the scheduled starter for Rochester and he posted a pretty pedestrian stat line in this one. Going five innings, he gave up just a single earned run on four hits. Issuing four free passes and tallying three strikeouts highlights the kind of command night it was for the Aussie. All Jaylin Davis has done since getting to Triple-A is mash the baseball. He started tonight’s scoring with his 12th homer, going yard for the fourth straight game. Now 29 games in to his Rochester career he’s got a .340 average with a 1.162 OPS. Recently inked Alejandro De Aza singled in two runs during the fifth, Davis plated another, and Wynston Sawyer recorded his 16th double to drive in a fourth. The Tides pushed runs across in the fifth, sixth, and ninth innings but ultimately came up just short. BLUE WAHOOS BITES Scheduled Day Off MIRACLE MATTERS Fort Myers 2, Tampa 0 Box Score After being doubled up on in the runs column yesterday the Miracle returned the favor this afternoon. Jhoan Duran took the ball and didn’t give it up for six innings. He was great allowing just five hits and walking two while striking out four. Fort Myers scored the game’s first run with Royce Lewis crossing the plate on a Ryan Costello fourth inning fielder’s choice. In the eighth inning Jacob Pearson nabbed his first Triple-A triple for the Miracle and then scored on a Michael Helman sacrifice bunt. Although the Tarpons collected six hits, as opposed to just three for Fort Myers, it was the home team walking away with the victory. KERNELS NUGGETS Cedar Rapids 5, Lake County 4, Box Score The Kernels sent Tyler Palm to the hill tonight and he rewarded them with six innings of exceptional work. Allowing just a lone unearned run on four hits, he gave up a single free pass and recorded six punchouts. Cedar Rapids opened the scoring in the first inning on a wild pitch ball four to Jared Akins. In the second they doubled their tally as Spencer Steer picked up an RBI on a fielder’s choice. With their lead halved going into the seventh, Akins stepped in to make a difference again. His 10th homer of the year was a three-run blast and put the Kernels up by a grand slam. Things got a bit hairy in the ninth as Lake County had the bases loaded with two outs, but ultimately just three runners came across the dish and the lead held. E-TWINS E-NOTES Elizabethton 13, Greeneville 1 Box Score Ben Gross took the mound for the E-Twins tonight and he was spotted plenty of breathing room as Elizabethton broke out for 13 runs on 14 hits. Going five innings allowing just an unearned run, Gross fanned three and walked one. Willie Joe Garry Jr. put the visitors on the board in the second inning with his first triple of the season. Plating both Matt Wallner and Charles Mack we were off to the races. Five more runs scored in the fourth inning on four base hits. Seth Gray picked up his fifth double of the season driving in two fifth-inning runs and the Reds trailed 9-0 before they knew what hit them. Answering back with a lone run in the bottom half of that inning, Elizabethton pulled further away late. A four-run seventh was capped off by a throwing error that allowed Anthony Prato to trot home for the game’s final run. Eight of the nine starting batters picked up hits for Elizabethton and three guys recorded three-hit nights. GCL TWINS TAKES GCL Braves 5, GCL Twins 2 Box Score Niklas Rimmel was on the bump and continued his strong 2019 season with six innings of three run ball (two earned). He picked up six strikeouts and didn’t issue a free pass. After the outing his ERA sits at 2.61. The Braves plated three runs in the second frame to jump out ahead. Adding a fourth in the seventh it wasn’t until the bottom half of the stretch inning that the Twins answered. Both runners, Kyle Schmidt and Jesus Feliz scored on a single wild pitch. Tallying just four hits in the contest, the GCL Twins weren’t able to get anything strung together.
