INF Anthony Prato promoted from Elizabethton to Cedar Rapids OF Byron Buxton has ended his rehab assignment with the Kernels RED WINGS REPORT Rochester 3, Syracuse 7 (Final- 9 Innings, Rain) Box Score Rochester scored three runs in the seventh inning to tie the game before allowing four runs in the eighth inning to relinquish their advantage. In the seventh inning, Rochester plated three runs thanks to a double from Alejandro De Aza. Wilin Rosario would score in the next at-bat thanks to a wild pitch. Rochester tied the game at 3-3, but the bullpen saw that lead evaporate. With all of the roster shuffling, Preston Guilmet started and was asked to record only nine outs. He allowed three runs on four hits with three strikeouts. Denny Pentley took over and didn’t allow a hit in two innings of work. He struck out two and walked one. Ryan O’Rourke coughed up two of the late-inning runs and Jeremy Bleich also added another two runs allowed as Syracuse stretched their lead to 7-3. BLUE WAHOO BITES Pensacola 7, Montgomery 11 Box Score Pensacola’s potent offense tried to mount a late-inning comeback, but it wasn’t enough with the hole the pitching staff had dug. Charlie Barnes struggled through five innings for his fourth loss of the year at Double-A. He surrendered seven runs on nine hits with two strikeouts and two walks. The bullpen didn’t exactly help the situation for Barnes. Jonathan Cheshire did fine in his one inning of work. He didn’t allow any runs and he walked one and struck out one. Stephen Gonsalves struggled with three earned runs on two hits with the biggest hit being a home run. Alex Phillips didn’t stop the bleeding as he surrendered one run on two hits to end the eighth inning. Pensacola has already clinched a playoff spot, but the bullpen is going to need to have better outings if the club wants to find success in the postseason. KERNELS NUGGETS Cedar Rapids 5, Beloit 1 Box Score Cedar Rapids plated four runs in the third inning and that turned out to be enough against the Beloit lineup that went 1-for-9 with runners in scoring position. Kody Funderburk scattered five hits and allowed one earned run for his first Midwest League win. He struck out eight and walked two to lower his ERA to 4.68. Rickey Ramirez pitched the final three frames and limited the Snappers to two hits. He walked two and struck out one without allowing a run. Matt Wallner had the only extra-base hit of the night for the Kernels. He collected his third double since being promoted and drove in a run. In the third inning, Trevor Casanova was hit by a pitch before a Daniel Ozoria single moved him into scoring position. Gabe Snyder drove in the first run of the game before Wallner’s important double. A passed ball and a Seth Gray single plated enough runs to put the Kernels in the driver’s seat. However, there is still work to get done in the regular season and rosters took on a very different feel after September call-ups were made on Sunday. 6 Potential Non-Roster September Call-ups Who Could Impact Games
Jeremy Nygaard posted an article in Twins
There are other players currently on the 40-man that may receive the call as well. Will Willians Astudillo conveniently be brought back from his rehab on September 1st? Will Nick Gordon be recovered in time to finally experience his first major league clubhouse as a player? Today, we'll look at six players who are not currently on the 40-man roster who could help the Twins wrap up the AL Central pennant. While not all of these players - and perhaps most - will not join the team, they all offer something that could make an impact on the current team. RHP Brusdar Graterol - With Graterol, it's not a matter of if he joins the Twins, but when. After missing a few months earlier this year with a shoulder ailment, he has returned to Pensacola and pitched in three games, all relief appearances. In those games he's thrown five scoreless innings, allowing one hit and two walks while striking out four. Of the 64 bullets he's fired, 43 (67.2%) have been strikes. Most impressively and famously, Graterol threw a fastball 103.8 mph in his last outing. He joined the Red Wings on Monday. He spent 10 days in Pensacola after recovering from his injury. How long will he be in Rochester? OF Alejandro De Aza (pictured) - Before being placed on Rochester's injured list on Sunday with a hand contusion, De Aza slashed .333/.410/.588 (.998) in his 28 games with the Red Wings. De Aza, 35, has not played in the MLB since 2017, but does have postseason experience which could help in September. In 2014, De Aza went 7-for-21 with three doubles and three RBI for the Orioles, who fell to the Royals in the ALCS. De Aza would be limited to below-average defense in an outfield corner (or DH), but would provide both experience and depth in the form of a left-handed bat who hits righties well. OF Ian Miller - Miller came to the organization in August from Seattle in a minor-league trade. The potential value of adding Miller to the big-club comes exclusively from his legs. Over his seven minor league seasons, Miller is 240-for-289 (83%) on stolen base attempts. The Twins this year - without Byron Buxton - are 11-for-28 (39%). I'm not suggesting the Twins bring up Miller to have him steal a bunch of bases. But the lack of successful stolen bases suggests that the team doesn't have a ton of speed. And there's going to be an occasion (again!) where a game will hang in the balance with a runner on first with one out or nobody out... and we'd all prefer that runner (or pinch-runner) is someone actually fast, not someone that is fast compared to the TwinsDaily writing staff. (Jeremy's note: When TwinsDaily writers competed at the mascot race a few seasons back, I won. And it wasn't even close. Believe me, these other guys aren't fast. They made me look like The Freeze.) LHP Ryan O'Rourke - Since ROR last pitched the for the Twins in 2016, he's had Tommy John surgery and bounced around baseball, eventually recently bouncing back into the organization. O'Rourke has always been death to left-handed hitters and could be a very useful commodity in September. RHP Jorge Alcala - Along with Graterol, Alcala joined Rochester on Monday. Acquired in the Ryan Pressly deal last July, Alcala has been a less-heralded prospect than many and his results haven't done a lot to make people take notice. In 26 AA games (16 starts), Alcala went 5-7 with a 5.87 ERA. He allowed a WHIP of 1.47 and opponents hit .284 off of him. But since moving exclusively to the bullpen in late July, Alcala has been a different dude. In 10 2/3 innings, Alcala has allowed seven hits and two walks (0.84 WHIP) and has struck out seven. Like Graterol, he's pounded the strike zone - 106 strikes in 165 pitches (64.2%). Pre-season scouting reports had Alcala up to 98 mph as a starter. In short stints, he'll be over 100 mph. Combine that with an above-average slider... and this bullpen might be OK after all. C Wilin Rosario - Like De Aza, it's been a bit since Rosario was a major-league baseball player. After hitting 28 home runs and finishing fourth in NL Rookie of the Year voting as a 23-year-old in 2013 with Colorado, Rosario had three years that increasingly got worse before playing the last three years in Korea and Japan. Back in America in 2019, Rosario has hit .307/.347/.527 (.874) in 385 plate appearances. He's a liability behind the plate, but could play there in a pinch. While it's not likely for Rosario to come up with the pending addition of Willians Astudillo, Rosario would be a phone call away if any of the three catchers go down to injury.- 46 comments

AWARDS The Twins announced their weekly Hitter and Pitcher of the Week Hitter of the Week: Gilberto Celestino, Cedar Rapids In five games this week, Celestino went 7-for-18 with two home runs and two doubles along with driving in four runs and scoring four runs. Celestino was acquired from Houston last season as part of the Ryan Pressly trade. Pitcher of the Week: Dakota Chalmers, Fort Myers Chalmers made one start this week and pitched six innings without allowing an earned run. He struck out nine and walked one. Last August, Chalmers was acquired from Oakland as part of the Fernando Rodney trade. TRANSACTIONS LHP Devin Smeltzer optioned by Minnesota to Rochester. OF Alejandro De Aza placed on the IL with Rochester (right-hand contusion). RHP Brian Rapp from IL with Cedar Rapids. LHP Erik Cha placed on the IL with Cedar Rapids (left forearm strain). RED WINGS REPORT Rochester 12, Louisville 1 Box Score Rochester found themselves down 1-0 after the first inning, but that’s where the scoring would stop for Louisville and Rochester’s bats more than woke up. Wilin Rosario and Brandon Barnes both hit grand slams to provide more than enough offensive punch. Randy Dobnak was pitching for the first time in 10 days and there might have been a little bit of first inning rust. He settled in from there and retired the final 13 men he faces. In five innings, he coaxed nine groundouts and all the hits and walks he allowed came in the first frame. He was removed after 73 pitches with 48 being strikes. Cody Stashak, Ryan O’Rourke and Jake Reed combined to throw four scoreless frames. O’Rourke and Reed both struck out two without allow a base runner. Scranton/Wilkes Barre leads Buffalo and Syracuse by two games and Rochester by three games. Rochester plays all their final 15 games against Buffalo and Syracuse. BLUE WAHOO BITES Pensacola 4, Mississippi 3 Box Score Trevor Larnach connected for his fifth home run of the season to help the Pensacola separate themselves from Mississippi. The team’s biggest inning came in the fourth and all the damage came after there were two outs in the frame. Ryan Costello walked and came around to score on a Jimmy Kerrigan double. Mark Contreras followed with a triple and then came home on an RBI-single for Caleb Hamilton. Larnach’s homer the next inning turned out to be the game-winning run. Jhoan Duran allowed three runs on nine hits with five strikeouts. It was his first appearance in August where he allowed three runs or fewer. Jovani Moran played a huge role out of the bullpen. He struck out five in three perfect innings for his third hold. It was the first time he had pitched three innings all season. Anthony Vizcaya ran into some ninth inning trouble, but he was still able to escape with his fourth save. With one out, he allowed a single and a walk to put the tying run in scoring position. After a mound visit, he struck out the next batter for the second out and got a shar flyout to end the game MIRACLE MATTERS Ft. Myers 1, Jupiter 5 Box Score Andrew Bechtold cranked out a career-high four hits, but the Miracle couldn’t come up with a big hit to push across more than one run. Fort Myers matched Jupiter with nine hits, but the Miracle only had two at-bats with a runner in scoring position. Still, the team left eight men on base. Jacob Pearson joined Bechtold in the multi-hit department after going 2-for-4. On the mound, Lachlan Wells started and went four innings by allowing two earned runs (four total runs) on six hits with three strikeouts and two walks. Yennier Cano, Johan Quezada and Zach Neff combined to pitch three shutout frames in the mid-innings. Moises Gomez ran into some control problems in the ninth as he walked three batters and allowed a run to score. He still was able to strikeout the side. KERNELS NUGGETS Cedar Rapids 4, Quad Cities 5 Box Score The Kernels scored four runs in the final three innings to close within one. In the seventh inning, Wander Javier doubled to put two runners into scoring position. DaShawn Keirsey followed with a double, his first extra-base hit of the season. In the eighth, Spencer Steer doubled with one out and came around on Gilberto Celestino single. Gabe Snyder followed with a double and Celestino would eventually score on a bases loaded walk. Albee Weiss struck out with the bases full. Andrew Cabezas was saddled with his seventh loss after allowing four runs on six hits. In 4 2/3 innings, he struck out four and walked three. Nate Hadley allowed a solo home run in his 1 1/3 innings. Brian Rapp and Jose Martinez kept the score close with each pitching a shutout inning. E-TWINS E-NOTES Elizabethton 2, Princeton 4 Box Score Elizabethton tried to mount a comeback; however, they were unsuccessful. After trailing 2-0 early, Matt Wallner collected a one-out RBI-single in the third. Max Smith tied the game with his sixth home run of the year. He finished 2-for-4 for his fourth multi-hit in his last ten contests. Ben Gross got the start and allowed three earned runs in five innings. He struck out two, but he allowed a season-high nine hits. Yancarlos Baez and Steven Cruz finished off the game with three scoreless innings. Cruz didn’t allow a hit in two innings and struck out two. Let’s take a look at the Top 5 hitters for the month of July, but first here are some players deserving of honorable mention. HONORABLE MENTION Jimmy Kerrigan - Rochester Red Wings/Pensacola Blue Wahoos - 25-103, .243/.259/.534 (.793) with 6 doubles, 8 home runs and 16 RBI. Drew Maggi - Rochester Red Wings - 28-91, .308/.427/.484 (.911) with 3 doubles, 2 triples, 3 home runs and 15 RBI. Ronald Torreyes - Rochester Red Wings - 33-105, .314/.345/.524 (.869) with 5 doubles, 1 triple, 5 home runs and 16 RBI. Lewin Diaz - Ft. Myers Miracle/Pensacola Blue Wahoos - 23-79, .291/.352/.557 (.909) with 9 doubles, 4 homers and 17 RBI. Royce Lewis - Ft. Myers Miracle/Pensacola Blue Wahoos - 25-94, .266/.330/.457 (.788) with 6 doubles, 4 homers and 12 RBI. Gabe Snyder - Cedar Rapids Kernels - 30-104, .288/.361/.538 (.900) with 5 doubles, 7 homers and 16 RBI. Spencer Steer - Elizabethton Twins/Cedar Rapids Kernels - 32-101, .317/.423/.485 (.908) with 7 doubles, 2 triples, 2 homers, 11 RBI. Albee Weiss - Elizabethton Twins/Cedar Rapids Kernels - 21-86, .244/.272/581 (.853) with 3 doubles, 1 triple, 8 home runs and 21 RBI. Alex Isola - Eliabethton Twins/Cedar Rapids Kernels - 14-54, .259/.317/.481 (.798) with 3 doubles, 3 homers and 11 RBI. Willie Joe Garry, Jr. - Elizabethton Twins - 26-93, .280/.356/.473 (.829) with 5 doubles, 2 triples, 3 homers and 13 RBI. Max Smith - Elizabethton Twins - 26-85, .306/.344/.576 (.921) with 6 doubles, 1 triple, 5 homers and 13 RBI. Wander Valdez - GCL Twins - 21-59, .356/.415/.593 (1.009) with 2 doubles, 4 homers and 11 RBI. THE TOP FIVE HITTERS Number 5 - Elizabethton Twins – OF Matt Wallner - 30-104, .288/.393/.500 (.893) with 14 doubles, 1 triple, 2 home runs, 17 RBI. Wallner was born in Forest Lake, MN, which is where he graduated from high school and was named Mr. Baseball. He was set to go to the University of North Dakota but the school dropped its baseball program. Instead, he went to Southern Mississippi where he became an All-American. The Twins used the 39th overall pick in this June’s draft to select him. While he was a dominant reliever in college, the Twins will use him as a power-hitting outfielder. As you can see from his first full month in professional baseball, he has a chance to hit, and rack up a lot of extra-base hits. Number 4 - Rochester Red Wings - SS Nick Gordon - 39-112, .348/.402/.536 (.937), 13 doubles, 1 triple, 2 home runs, 18 RBI. Gordon’s introduction to Triple-A and the International League didn’t go so smoothly in 2018. His 2019 began on the injured list. However, Nick Gordon has been a doubles machine this season for the Red Wings. He’s hit for average, been able to get on base, and he’s displaying extra-base power. If the Twins have a need in the infield, he could get that call. Or, he could be a September call-up to provide depth. Number 3 – Cedar Rapids Kernels - OF Gilberto Celestino - 38-103, .369/.430/.563 (.993) with 7 doubles, 2 triples, 3 home runs, 14 RBI. Young Gilberto Celestino made his first appearance for a full-season affiliate and was also introduced to the early-season weather in the Midwest League. Celestino struggled. However, he made some adjustments and had a huge month in July. Celestino was a big international signing of the Astros and came to the Twins last July in the Ryan Pressly trade. He is very athletic and a good outfielder. He’s got speed and is very strong. Number 2 - Rochester Red Wings – C/1B/DH Wilin Rosario - 33-78, .423/.472/.744 (1.215) with 7 doubles, 6 home runs, ss RBI. The 30-year-old Rosario spent parts of the 2011-2015 seasons with the Colorado Rockies. He hit 83 doubles and 71 home runs in 447 games. Since then, he has played in Japan and Korea. The Twins signed him to a minor league deal over the winter. While he has mostly DHd for the Red Wings this year, he’s caught and played first base 16 times this year as well. He has been providing power throughout the season and had a huge month in July. He, and Tomas Telis, are providing strong catcher depth for the Twins in Rochester. And the Twins Minor League Hitter of the Month is: Rochester Red Wings – OF Jaylin Davis - 39-106, .368/.442/.755 (1.196) with 8 doubles, 11 homers, 27 RBI. Since his mid-June promotion to the Rochester Red Wings, Jaylin Davis has not stopped hitting. The hashtag #HasJaylinDavisHomeredYet became a thing. Well, I mean, I started it and did it a few times because the answer was usually Yes. Sure, the Triple-A baseballs probably don’t hurt, but Davis also made some adjustments this season, He hit 10 home runs in 58 games in Pensacola. After the promotion, he hit 15 homers in 41 games for the Red Wings. But he wasn’t “just” hitting for power. He has had a much better approach at the plate. He has cut down on the strikeouts. He hit for average. Some have told me that he is using the whole field better. Most of his Red Wings homers have been hit to center and right center. Jaylin Davis was well on his way toward the Twins Daily Minor League HItter of the Year award. And for his efforts, he was traded to the Giants as part of the July 31st deadline as part of a package that brought Sam Dyson to the Twins. And that may have been the best thing for Davis. The Giants have been looking for outfielders most of this season. In his first game for Sacramento, the Giants’ AAA affiliate, on Friday night. He went 3-for-3 with a walk and two doubles. We would like to congratulate Jaylin Davis, Twins Daily’s choice for Minor League Hitter of the Month for July 2019. Feel free to share your thoughts and ask questions.

That trade deadline has passed. August marks the final month of the minor league season. In July, there were a lot of great offensive performances. For the first time, we include players from the Twins short-season, rookie league affiliates. Before we get to our Top 5 Twins prospects, there is a list of a dozen Honorable Mentions. This month’s group of Twins minor leaguers is quite diverse. There are players represented from all six affiliates in the States. There are 18-year-old players and there are 30-year-old players. There are even a couple of people who aren’t in the Twins organization in this month’s awards. TRANSACTIONS Minnesota Twins Acquired RHP Sam Dyson Rochester Red Wings RHP Cody Allen released OF Jaylin Davis traded to San Francisco RHP Ryan Eades reinstated from IL RHP D.J. Baxendale placed on the IL with groin strain Pensacola Blue Wahoos RHP Marcos Diplan acquired from Milwaukee Cedar Rapids Kernels RHP Kai-Wei Teng traded to San Francisco Elizabethton Twins RHP Prelander Berroa traded to San Francisco RED WINGS REPORT Rochester 6, Scranton/WB 1 Box Score Adam Bray took the ball to start this contest and he turned in four solid innings allowing just a single run (unearned) on two hits. He struck out three and walked just one. Rochester had to get this victory without their hottest hitter over the past couple months with Jaylin Davis being included in the package sent to San Francisco. Thankfully the Red Wings wasted little time in the run scoring department. A four-run first inning was punctuated with a two run homer for Alejandro De Aza, his third of the season. He’s batting .300 with a .910 OPS in 14 games since signing with the organization. Wilin Rosario blasted his 15th homer of the year in the 3rd to add another run, and Jake Cave drove in the sixth of the game on an RBI single in the 4th. Returning from the injured list and working in relief, Ryan Eades picked up the victory with a scoreless 5th inning. BLUE WAHOOS BITES Jacksonville 4, Pensacola 3 Box Score Charlie Barnes started in this one and went six innings. He gave up four runs but just one was earned, and he struck out seven walking just one. He’s now got just a 2.91 ERA through 12 Double-A games. Pensacola scored first on an error to open the game. Alex Kirilloff raced home to start the evening. After giving up four in the bottom of the third, the Blue Wahoos needed to crawl back in it. The only runs they could must however came on Ryan Jeffers 2nd Double-A dinger, a two-run shot in the 8th. Both Jeffers and Kirilloff enjoyed two-hit games. MIRACLE MATTERS Game Postponed Twins first basemen C.J. Cron was to begin a rehab assignment with the Miracle tonight to test out his thumb injury. Unfortunately that was thwarted with the postponement. KERNELS NUGGETS Beloit 12, Cedar Rapids 5 Box Score Lefty Kody Funderburk was tonight’s scheduled starter and a tough outing made it a quick evening. Coming up an out short of three innings, the southpaw gave up 10 runs (seven earned) on eight hits. After making it through two innings with just a 2-0 deficit, Cedar Rapids allowing a nine spot in the bottom of the third. Needing a response the Kernels bats stayed cold most of the night. Albee Weiss provided the first runs on his second Cedar Rapids homer in the 5th, but the team didn’t strike again until the 9th. Trailing by ten, Alex Isola followed up a balked in run with a two-RBI double to draw within seven. The rally ended there though. These two square off again tomorrow night so Cedar Rapids can look to exact some revenge in short order. E-TWINS E-NOTES Burlington 7, Elizabethton 6 Box Score The E-Twins turned to Andriu Marin as their starter tonight and he was bounced after recording a single out in the 5th inning. Giving up five runs on four hits, the bright spot was a six strikeout performance with just two walks. Marin was staked to a six run lead with Elizabethton doing all of their damage in the opening frame. Parker Phillips drove in the first run with a single to center. A sac fly from Trevor Jensen and a single from Anthony Prato then made it three to night. Janigson Villalobos roped his 3rd double of the year, this one with the bases loaded, to double up the margin. After Marin ran into trouble in the 5th, the E-Twins lead was cut down to just one. Failing to add more as the game went on, Burlington creeped back in to knot things up in the 7th and take the lead in the 8th. Elizabethton will be looking forward to the trip out of town and some home cooking following the three game sweep. GCL TWINS TAKES GCL Twins 7, GCL Braves 4 Box Score Niklas Rimmel drew the start today for the GCL club and turned in four innings of work. He gave up two runs on three hits while walking and fanning four apiece. His ERA now sits at 2.92 across 24.2 IP this season. Yunior Severino, rehabbing for Cedar Rapids, started the game with a leadoff triple. Keoni Cavaco wasthen hit by a pitch in the next at bat, and things spiraled quickly for the Braves. When the dust settled following the first frame the GCL Twins had put up five runs. Serving as the DH Jeferson Morales blasted a two-run shot in the third (his third of the season), to give the away club a 7-5 advantage. The GCL Braves would attempt a comeback plating two in the 7th but that was where this one ended. With games in the Southern and Gulf Coast Leagues being affected by rains, there were only four games played in the minors on Tuesday despite one team having a doubleheader. You will have a hard time finding a hitter that has had a better day this entire season, than one slugger in particular had in triple-A by clubbing three homers. There was also a couple of solid starting performances, including one in Rochester from a pitcher who started the season in Fort Myers. To find out everything that happened with your favorite prospects on Tuesday, keep reading! TRANSACTIONS Southern League All-Star Catcher Caleb Hamilton was promoted to Rochester from Pensacola as the Red Wings placed 3B Brian Schales on the temporarily inactive list.As a replacement for Hamilton, the Blue Wahoos received 1B Ryan Costello from Fort Myers. The Miracle were assigned IF Yeltsin Encarnacion from Cedar Rapids.RED WINGS REPORTNorfolk 3, Rochester 16 Box Score The Rochester lineup bludgeoned Norfolk on Tuesday, where if this were an amateur game the mercy rule would have come into play after the fifth inning. Drew Maggi started the bottom of the first with a home run to set the tone for everyone else, and Wilin Rosario added a trifecta of two-run blasts, and seven RBI in total, to break it wide open. The just promoted (again) Randy Dobnak took the mound for the Red Wings and did his thing, which is outfoxing and dominating opposing lineups. In six innings he gave up no runs on four hits and two walks to stem the Tides, while also striking out six to lower his triple-A ERA on the season to below 2.00 in 23 2/3 total innings. His ERA on the year is at 2.11 across 18 starts (20 games) with Fort Myers, Pensacola, and Rochester. In this one 54 of his 87 pitches went for strikes (62%), including 13 swinging as he picked up his ninth win of the year. Also this: The big inning for the Red Wings lineup was the second, where they scored six runs as they sent nine men to the plate and was punctuated by Rosario’s first blast. The top four hitters in the lineup combined to go 14-for-20 with 10 runs scored, four doubles, four home runs, and 10 RBI. Jaylin Davis had three of those doubles and scored four runs in a 5-for-5 night. Ronald Torreyes added two doubles and scored two runs, while Tomas Telis added a triple. The team combined for 22 hits and were 7-12 with runners in scoring position. Cody Allen came on for the seventh and had a one-two-three inning, striking out one. Sam Clay allowed a run on one hit in the eighth, while Preston Guilmet struck out two but also gave up a two-run homer in the ninth to account for the final score. BLUE WAHOOS BITES Mobile @ Pensacola - Postponed The Blue Wahoos matchup with the BayBears Tuesday night was affected by the weather and postponed. They’ll play a doubleheader on Thursday to make it up. MIRACLE MATTERS Game 1: Fort Myers 5, Dunedin 4 Box Score The Miracle struck first in game one of their doubleheader as Royce Lewis led off the inning with his ninth home run on the season for a 1-0 lead. Starting pitcher Cole Sands had breezed through the first three innings of his outing, but a two-out rally of the bloop and a blast variety got to him in the bottom of the fourth to put the Blue Jays up 2-1. His offense picked him back up right away though with a run in the fifth after three singles, and three more in the sixth when Ernie De La Trinidad connected for his first home run of the year to put them up for good at 5-2. Sands later would strike out the first two hitters he faced in the sixth before giving up a solo home run to end his day. He went 5 2/3 innings to pick up his fourth win, allowing three runs on six hits and a walk while striking out five. Zach Neff finished the final 1 1/3, allowing one run on a hit and a walk to pick up his third save. He struck out three. Game 2: Fort Myers 0, Dunedin 2 Box Score It was an even better pitcher’s duel in game two with the Miracle’s Jhoan Duran facing off against Maximo Castillo of the Blue Jays. A couple of walks from Duran in the second inning loaded the bases for a single to bring in two for Dunedin, and that would be it for the game. Duran went the first four innings, allowing those two runs on four hits and three walks, while striking out five. Joe Record would finish the game, striking out two in two innings. Both teams managed only five hits in the contest, but the Blue Jays went 2-for-7 with runners in scoring position while the Miracle went hitless in seven of their own opportunities, leaving eight men on base for the game. Lewis and Jose Miranda each contributed a double to the effort. KERNELS NUGGETS Scheduled Day Off The Kernels had Tuesday off after a six-game road trip where they went 3-3 against the Lake County Captains and Fort Wayne TinCaps. They will begin a six-game homestand against the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers on Wednesday with right-hander Josh Winder on the mound looking to get back on the dominating track after a rough outing last time out. E-TWINS E-NOTES Princeton 8, Elizabethton 3 Box Score Elizabethton was unable to solve Princeton’s pitching for most of this one, as they managed just two hits and a walk as a team through the first eight innings. Both hits to that point were doubles off the bats of Parker Phillips and Trevor Jensen. They finally got on the board in the ninth when Seth Gray drew a two-out walk, and Phillips followed with his first home run in the Appalachian League. Max Smith then followed with one of his own to make the game at least appear closer when looking at only the box score. Taking the hill for the E-Twins was righthander Tyler Benninghoff, who was able to limit the damage against him through 5 2/3 by striking out eleven Rays hitters. He allowed three runs (two earned) on five hits and a walk but was saddled with the loss. Ryan Shreve got them through the eighth inning, but at the expense of four runs (three earned) on six hits and a walk. He struck out two in 2 1/3. Erik Cha came on for the ninth and allowed a run on two hits and a walk, striking out one. Twins Minor League Report (7/23): Rosario and Dobnak Demolish Norfolk
Steve Lein posted an article in Minors
To find out everything that happened with your favorite prospects on Tuesday, keep reading! TRANSACTIONS Southern League All-Star Catcher Caleb Hamilton was promoted to Rochester from Pensacola as the Red Wings placed 3B Brian Schales on the temporarily inactive list. As a replacement for Hamilton, the Blue Wahoos received 1B Ryan Costello from Fort Myers. The Miracle were assigned IF Yeltsin Encarnacion from Cedar Rapids. RED WINGS REPORT Norfolk 3, Rochester 16 Box Score The Rochester lineup bludgeoned Norfolk on Tuesday, where if this were an amateur game the mercy rule would have come into play after the fifth inning. Drew Maggi started the bottom of the first with a home run to set the tone for everyone else, and Wilin Rosario added a trifecta of two-run blasts, and seven RBI in total, to break it wide open. https://twitter.com/RocRedWings/status/1153851619915763713 The just promoted (again) Randy Dobnak took the mound for the Red Wings and did his thing, which is outfoxing and dominating opposing lineups. Also this: https://twitter.com/RocRedWings/status/1153835384066887681 The big inning for the Red Wings lineup was the second, where they scored six runs as they sent nine men to the plate and was punctuated by Rosario’s first blast. It was Minor League Opening Day on Thursday, one of my favorite days of the year. Instead of just following the MInnesota Twins, we now will have updated from the Rochester Red Wings, the Pensacola Blue Wahoos, the Ft. Myers Miracle and the Cedar Rapids Kernels most days for the next five months. And, every day until the end fo the season, we will post the Twins Minor League Report. Our goal with these reports is to provide Twins Daily readers with a one-spot stop to find everything from the Twins system that day, transactions, notes and game updates. We will highlight how the pitchers perform. We’ll note multi-hit games and extra base hits and provide some other highlights from the game. Please feel free to ask questions if you have any in the comments. If you were at the game, be sure to leave your observations as well.Find out everything that happened in the Twins system on Thursday, starting with the Transactions of the day. TRANSACTIONS There were no transactions in the Twins system on Thursday. Maybe some of you saw that in the past week a couple of Twins minor league pitchers, Colton Davis and Anthony Marzi, chose to retire. Here are the Opening Day Roster Previews for each of the Twins full-season affiliates, in case you missed them on Monday. Rochester Red WingsPensacola Blue WahoosFt. Myers MiracleCedar Rapids KernelsRED WINGS REPORTRochester 4, Lehigh Valley 2 Box Score Ronald Torreyes knows how to start a season. He was the Red Wings second batter in the first inning, and he launched a long home run. It was the first hit in the organization in 2019, the first home run, the first run and the first RBI. Kohl Stewart got the Opening Night call for the Red Wings. Things didn’t go well early for the right-hander. He went walk, strikeout, walk, strikeout with the first four batters of the first inning. He then gave up a bloop single to score run. Then a wild pitch scored a second run. He needed 34 pitches to complete the first frame. The Twins have a rule that if a pitcher throws 35 or more pitches in an inning, he will be done for the night. Stewart was one pitch from being done. He went on to throw four zeroes on the scoreboard and earned the Win in this contest. In his five innings, he gave up the two runs (1 earned) on just three hits. He walked two, hit one and struck out eight batters. Ryan Eades came on and struck out four over two perfect innings. He needed just 18 pitches. Then Tyler Duffey came on and earned the save with two scoreless innings. He struck out four as well, though he did hit one batter. The loaded Miracle lineup got production from more than just Lewin Diaz. Ben Rortvedt went 2-for-4 with a walk and two RBI singles. Akil Baddoo added a triple late in the game to go with his homer. Travis Blankenhorn had a walk and a double, and he scored three runs. Vizcaya was clutch to end the fifth inning, but he gave up two runs on two hits and a walk the next inning. Alex Phillips came on and struck out four batters over two scoreless, one-hit innings. He was hitting 95 and 96 mph consistently. Johan Quezada pitched a scoreless ninth frame, and he was hitting 97 a couple of times in the inning. KERNELS NUGGETS Cedar Rapids 2, Peoria 10 Box Score Blayne Enlow returned to the Kernels after a solid showing in his first full pro season in 2018. He earned the Opening Night call for the team this year. Things went all right the first couple of innings. He gave up leadoff walks in the first two innings, but neither came back to hurt him. He did give up a solo homer in the second inning. But then came the third inning. Enlow faced seven batters. He walked one and the other six got hits, the final was a double. Austin Schulfer came on and walked the first batter he faced to load the bases. However, he then struck out the next three batters to end the inning. Schulfer was good. He struck out five batters over three scoreless, two-hit innings. Jose Martinez came on next and was charged with four runs on six hits and two walks in 1 2/3 innings. Carlos Suniaga got the final seven outs for the Kernels. He gave up two hits and struck out three. There wasn’t much offense for the Kernels. The team scored two runs in the sixth inning, on RBI singles from Andrew Bechtold and David Banuelos. Yunior Severino led the team with a 2-for-4 game. Wilin Rosario went 2-for-5 with a home run. Randy Cesar had a walk and a big, two-run homer that gave the Red Wings the two-run lead late in the game. BLUE WAHOO BITES Pensacola , Mobile Box Score Opening Night was pushed back a day as rains came to Mobile. For Mobile, it means that they will get to face Jorge Alcala and Brusdar Graterol on Friday! MIRACLE MATTERS Ft. Myers 11, Charlotte 3 Box Score Hard to believe that in the sixth inning, Jeff Smith’s Charlotte squad tied the game at three. The potent Miracle took off at that point, led by the return of Lewin Diaz. Diaz played half of last season with the Miracle but unfortunately needed wrist surgery and missed the rest of the season. He continued his body transformation in the offseason and his work paid off on Opening Night. The now-slender slugger went 4-for-5 with a double and three RBI to lead the offense. Bryan Sammons gave up an unearned run in the first inning, but he was able to escape danger several times. He gave up just the unearned run on seven hits and two walks over just 4 1/3 innings. He left the game with the bases loaded and one out in the fifth. Anthony Vizcaya came on and struck out the fourth and fifth batters of Charlotte. It was Vizcaya’s first game with an affiliated team since 2014. The Miracle got on the board in the 2nd inning when Lewin Diaz doubled off of the wall in right field to score Travis Blankenhorn. Ben Rortvedt followed with a single to right that scored Diaz. Following the Vizcaya strikeouts in the top of the 5th, the Miracle got back on the board in the bottom of the inning. Akil Baddoo homered to the berm in left field for the first Miracle homer of the season. But as mentioned, the Stone Crabs tied it up in the sixth. The Miracle regained the lead 4-3 and then Royce Lewis put together a long at-bat that culminated in a two-run single that broke the game open. In the bottom of the eighth inning, the Miracle really broke things open with a five-run inning. https://twitter.com/HalOstrow/status/1113966209307901954 The loaded Miracle lineup got production from more than just Lewin Diaz. https://twitter.com/hotts58/status/1091534395670962177 When it comes to the man behind the plate, it seems likely for Jason Castro and Mitch Garver to split time. Castro is coming off a major injury, but he should be able to go full-steam ahead with spring training starting. Mitch Garver caught almost 670 innings last season and hit .268/.335/.414. Those are very respectable numbers for a back-stop. Garver might seem like a young player but he will already be 28 next season. I think the Twins will rotate through both these players and allow them to work with specific pitchers to build a rapport. Willians Astudillo has become someone of a cult hero over the last year but I can’t see him filling more than a third catcher role with this team. Obviously, an injury to Castro or Garver could change the plan. Astudillo showed some defensive flexibility last year but it hardly seems likely for the team to give him a utility job. My guess is they carry two catchers and Astudillo isn’t one of them. https://twitter.com/hotts58/status/1092114226045423617 Another catching option for the Twins is newly signed Wilin Rosario. He hasn’t played in the big leagues since 2015 when he was with the Rockies organization. In his five big league seasons, he has combined to hit .273/.306/.473 including two seasons with 20+ home runs. He spent the 2016-17 seasons playing overseas in the KBO, as he hit .330/.390/.625 while averaging 35 home runs per season. Last year, Rosario played in Japan and hit .242/.285/.374 with eight home runs. While some of those numbers sound good, the Twins are not giving him an invite to big league camp. This seems strange since almost every catcher in the system gets a chance to help at big league camp at some point. He will provide some organization depth to start the year. Depending on how he hits in the minors, he could be added to the team later in the year. https://twitter.com/Hey_Yo_Its_GMan/status/1091530143514984448 As many people know, the Twins have gotten rid of their cream alternate home jerseys in favor of a new blue jersey. These new threads incorporate the Kasota gold colors the team has embraced since the 2014 All-Star Game. I was disappointed to see the cream-colored jerseys go because they reminded me of the early Target Field years with Jim Thome cranking home runs to all parts of the field. They had a throwback feel to them, but the team decided to go in a different direction. From the team’s perspective, rotating alternate jerseys is a good way to keep fans interested in buying new gear. Most likely, everyone that wanted a cream color jersey already bought one. At the beginning of the 2016 season, the club had added in the red home alternate jerseys. Adding in a new color, allows the team to bring in a little extra. However, I believe the team only gets the revenue if the jerseys are purchased at an official team store. Either way, this was an opportunity for the team to rebrand and for fans to pick up another jersey of their favorite player. https://twitter.com/gary_pecinovsky/status/1091046086477791232 Manny Machado and Bryce Harper are still free agents and spring training is days away from starting. Back in January, Buster Olney thought the Twins could be a mystery team for Machado or Harper because of their payroll flexibility. Minnesota has almost no guaranteed money on the books beyond this season so adding a franchise altering player could help push this team to the next level. At TwinsFest, it sounded like the Twins have very little interest in going after either of the mega-free agents. “My view … for doing it is the best time to acquire players of that magnitude is when your window to win is wide open,” Levine said to the crowd. “Not when you’re got your fingers underneath the window and you’re trying to jam the window open. I want to do it when we’re projected to win the Central and we’re ready to put our foot on someone’s throat.” https://twitter.com/filmreviewbyme/status/1091413247134068736 Craig Kimbrel is the number one relief pitcher on the market. He’s a seven-time All-Star and he has topped the 30 save mark in eight consecutive seasons. He will be 31-years old next season and he hasn’t shown many signs of slowing down in recent years. He’s only pitched more than 70 innings in one season so it’s not like he has a ton of wear and tear on his arm. If you follow the trail of this tweet, the Twins seem to be one of the teams in the running for Kimbrel. Jon Heyman, a well-respected national baseball writer, named the Twins as a possible landing spot for Kimbrel. Paul Crane is based out of Atlanta so he might have connections to Kimbrel and his camp from during his Braves tenure. This might be one of the reasons none of the Minneapolis beat writers are reporting on it at this point. Does Kimbrel make sense for the Twins? I’m never a big fan of offering multi-year deals to aging relief pitchers. That being said, three-years and $45 million certainly wouldn’t hinder the team during the life of the contract. Also, he could be an intriguing trade piece if the Twins aren’t in contention. Do you think the Twins should sign Kimbrel? Who catches the most innings for the Twins next year? Leave a COMMENT and start the discussion.
