HONORABLE MENTIONS RHP Kyle Barraclough, St. Paul Saints: 9 1/3 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 15 K, 0.00 ERA LHP Jovani Moran, St. Paul Saints: 16 2/3 IP, 10 H, 7 R, 6 ER, 10 BB, 24 K, 3.24 ERA LHP Aaron Rozek, Ft. Myers/Cedar Rapids: 18 1/3 IP, 7 R, 6 ER, 3 BB, 27 K, 2.95 ERA RHP Melvi Acosta, Cedar Rapids Kernels: 14 IP, 9 H, 6 R, 4 ER, 3 BB, 19 K, 2.51 ERA The month of August saw a number of the more well-known relief arms in the Twins' farm system struggle or simply not perform to the level we've become accustomed. However, the four listed above, headlined by sure-fire future big leaguer Jovani Moran, just missed being considered for a spot in the top three. Each had at least one stat that prevented them from reaching the podium. Kyle Barraclough didn't throw enough innings (largely due to spending a week in the big leagues); Jovani Moran walked too many; and Aaron Rozek's and Melvi Acosta's ERA were higher than those above them. 3. RHP Jordan Gore, Wichita Wind Surge Stats: 13 2/3 IP, 6 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 4 BB, 16 K, 1.32 ERA This isn't the first time Gore's name has appeared on this list, and it likely won't be the last. The lefty's rise from a marginal infielder to one of the Twins' best minor league bullpen arms has been fun to watch and at no point has it appeared as though he's slowing down. Gore owns the farm system's fifth-best ERA (2.54) among pitchers who have tossed at least 40 innings, and his 82 strikeouts — in only 60 2/3 innings — comes in ninth; only Jovani Moran has struck out more batters (105) in a comparable amount of innings (64). Don't be surprised if he finds his way to Target Field at some point next season. 2. RHP Tyler Palm, Cedar Rapids Kernels Stats: 12 2/3 IP, 9 H, 3 R, 0 ER, 2 BB, 16 K, 0.00 ERA On the surface, Palm's numbers are arguably better than anyone else's on this list. His 8:1 K:BB ratio was topped only by Kyle Barraclough's 15:1 ratio in fewer innings and Aaron Rozek's 9:1 ratio, which accompanied a much higher ERA. However, what's keeping Palm from claiming the top spot in this month's rankings were his slightly higher number of hits and runs allowed (even if unearned) as well as four hit-by-pitches. It's nitpicking to a degree, sure, but the top guy performed infinitesimally better, and, therefore, he earned the nod. 1. RHP Ryan Shreve, Cedar Rapids Kernels Stats: 13 IP, 7 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 3 BB, 19 K, 0.69 ERA Shreve has been quietly one of the stronger bullpen arms in the Twins' farm system this season. Among Twins-affiliated minor league pitchers who have thrown at least 40 innings this summer, Shreve ranks fifth in K% at 34.8% as well as in K%-BB% at 24.9%, which places him alongside the likes of Rozek (32.9%), Moran (31.4%), Sawyer Gipson-Long (26.4%), and Louie Varland (25.1%). After excelling as a starter for Pacific University, Shreve was the Twins' 16th round pick during the 2019 draft. In late May, he was promoted from Low-A to High-A, putting him on track for a potential call to the big leagues next season. What are your thoughts? Who would get your vote? TRANSACTIONS Rochester Red Wings ADD OF Alejandro De Aza signed by Minnesota RED WINGS REPORT Rochester 5, Norfolk 4 Box Score Lewis Thorpe was the scheduled starter for Rochester and he posted a pretty pedestrian stat line in this one. Going five innings, he gave up just a single earned run on four hits. Issuing four free passes and tallying three strikeouts highlights the kind of command night it was for the Aussie. All Jaylin Davis has done since getting to Triple-A is mash the baseball. He started tonight’s scoring with his 12th homer, going yard for the fourth straight game. Now 29 games in to his Rochester career he’s got a .340 average with a 1.162 OPS. Recently inked Alejandro De Aza singled in two runs during the fifth, Davis plated another, and Wynston Sawyer recorded his 16th double to drive in a fourth. The Tides pushed runs across in the fifth, sixth, and ninth innings but ultimately came up just short. BLUE WAHOOS BITES Scheduled Day Off MIRACLE MATTERS Fort Myers 2, Tampa 0 Box Score After being doubled up on in the runs column yesterday the Miracle returned the favor this afternoon. Jhoan Duran took the ball and didn’t give it up for six innings. He was great allowing just five hits and walking two while striking out four. Fort Myers scored the game’s first run with Royce Lewis crossing the plate on a Ryan Costello fourth inning fielder’s choice. In the eighth inning Jacob Pearson nabbed his first Triple-A triple for the Miracle and then scored on a Michael Helman sacrifice bunt. Although the Tarpons collected six hits, as opposed to just three for Fort Myers, it was the home team walking away with the victory. KERNELS NUGGETS Cedar Rapids 5, Lake County 4, Box Score The Kernels sent Tyler Palm to the hill tonight and he rewarded them with six innings of exceptional work. Allowing just a lone unearned run on four hits, he gave up a single free pass and recorded six punchouts. Cedar Rapids opened the scoring in the first inning on a wild pitch ball four to Jared Akins. In the second they doubled their tally as Spencer Steer picked up an RBI on a fielder’s choice. With their lead halved going into the seventh, Akins stepped in to make a difference again. His 10th homer of the year was a three-run blast and put the Kernels up by a grand slam. Things got a bit hairy in the ninth as Lake County had the bases loaded with two outs, but ultimately just three runners came across the dish and the lead held. E-TWINS E-NOTES Elizabethton 13, Greeneville 1 Box Score Ben Gross took the mound for the E-Twins tonight and he was spotted plenty of breathing room as Elizabethton broke out for 13 runs on 14 hits. Going five innings allowing just an unearned run, Gross fanned three and walked one. Willie Joe Garry Jr. put the visitors on the board in the second inning with his first triple of the season. Plating both Matt Wallner and Charles Mack we were off to the races. Five more runs scored in the fourth inning on four base hits. Seth Gray picked up his fifth double of the season driving in two fifth-inning runs and the Reds trailed 9-0 before they knew what hit them. Answering back with a lone run in the bottom half of that inning, Elizabethton pulled further away late. A four-run seventh was capped off by a throwing error that allowed Anthony Prato to trot home for the game’s final run. Eight of the nine starting batters picked up hits for Elizabethton and three guys recorded three-hit nights. GCL TWINS TAKES GCL Braves 5, GCL Twins 2 Box Score Niklas Rimmel was on the bump and continued his strong 2019 season with six innings of three run ball (two earned). He picked up six strikeouts and didn’t issue a free pass. After the outing his ERA sits at 2.61. The Braves plated three runs in the second frame to jump out ahead. Adding a fourth in the seventh it wasn’t until the bottom half of the stretch inning that the Twins answered. Both runners, Kyle Schmidt and Jesus Feliz scored on a single wild pitch. Tallying just four hits in the contest, the GCL Twins weren’t able to get anything strung together. RED WINGS REPORT Rochester 8, Lehigh Valley 7 Box Score Rochester snuck out to an early 4-0 lead in this one and they needed every run in the end. Zander Wiel and Nick Gordon both had three-hit nights. Gordon had his 15th double while Wiel had his 13th home run and his 19th double. Jordany Valdespin, Wilin Rosario and Brian Schales all joined the multi-hit parade with two hits apiece. The Red Wings pounded out 15 total hits, but the club only went 4-for-21 with runners in scoring position. Devin Smeltzer pitched into the fifth inning, allowing one run, a home run, with five strikeouts and a walk. Rochester’s bullpen did little to support Smeltzer’s effort as every relief pitcher allowed at least one run. Jake Reed surrendered three runs in two innings. Carlos Torres pitched 1 1/3 innings and gave up two runs on two hits. Ian Krol earned his third save but he also allowed a run in the ninth as the result of three walks. BLUE WAHOO BITES Pensacola 1, Biloxi 5 Box Score The Blue Wahoos offensive struggled to string together hits and found themselves on the wrong end of this one. Only one batter stepped in with a runner in scoring position and the team went 0-for-1 in those situations. Lewin Diaz continued his hot hitting ways since being called up. He homered for the second time in three games. Alex Kirilloff and Mark Contreras both added doubles. Andro Cutura was used as an opener and held Biloxi off the scoreboard even though he allowed two hits. Charlie Barnes was used as the primary pitcher. He allowed two earned runs but errors from Alex Kirilloff and Travis Blankenhorn allowed two unearned runs to score. Barnes struck out six and walked one in six innings. Jeff Ames allowed one run on one hit in two innings. He struck out one and walked two. MIRACLE MATTERS Ft. Myers 1, Charlotte 2 Box Score Blayne Enlow ended up on the wrong end of a pitcher’s duel. Both starting pitchers allowed a home run but Enlow’s was a two-run shot to baseball’s best prospect, Wander Franco. In 6 1/3 innings, Enlow allowed two runs on five hits with six strikeouts and two walks. He’s pitched six innings in every appearance with Fort Myers and he has yet to allow more than two runs. Ryan Jeffers accounted for the lone Miracle run. He knocked his 10th home run in the fourth inning and it gave Fort Myers a 1-0 lead. He finished 2-for-4. Royce Lewis and Gabriel Maciel both went 1-for-4. Andrew Bechtold picked up a hit in three trips. He’s now gone 3-for-20 since being promoted from Cedar Rapids. Joe Record finished off the seventh inning for Enlow. He allowed a walk and a hit. Derek Molina continued his tremendous streak. Over his last 11 appearances, Molina hasn’t allowed an earned run. In this one, he pitched two perfect innings and struck out four. However, they would be shut out from there and Wisconsin plated three runs in extra-innings for the win. Jacob Pearson did his best to keep Cedar Rapids in this one. In the first inning, Pearson set up a run all by himself. He led off the inning with a single and then he stole second. Gabe Snyder followed with a single and Pearson came around to score. In the bottom of the third, he cracked his fourth home run of the year. Chris Williams and Daniel Ozoria both went 2-for-4 in the losing effort. Tyler Palm was terrific on the mound as he was nearly unhittable. He retired the first 14 batters he faced and carried a no-hitter into the sixth inning. In 5 1/3 innings, he limited the Timber Rattlers to one run on three hits. He struck out three and walked one. Carlos Suniaga pitched 1 2/3 innings and only allowed one baserunner while striking out two. Moises Gomez struck out six batters in three innings, but he allowed the tying run in the eighth. Tanner Howell took the loss after Wisconsin put up a three spot in the final frame. Three walks would come back to haunt him. E-TWINS E-NOTES Elizabethton 2, Bristol 6 Box Score Bristol jumped all over E-Twins starter Tyler Benninghoff in his first start of the year. The first batter doubled and moved to third on a wild pitch. Six straight batters reached before Benninghoff was able to record an out. He was only able to collect two outs and he allowed six runs on four hits. The E-Twins bullpen did fantastic in relief. Frandy Torres took over for Benninghoff and did well in a tough spot. Over 3 1/3 shutout innings, he limited the Pirates to two hits and added four strikeouts. Louie Varland continued the shutout innings. He tossed three innings and allowed two hits. Nate Hadley finished off the final two frames. He only allowed one baserunner and struck out three. Elizabethton was limited to four hits in the game. Matt Wallner collected his first professional home run as part of a two-hit effort. He also scored both of the team’s runs. Trevor Jensen reached base two times. RED WINGS REPORT Game 1: Pawtucket 6, Rochester 1 (7 innings) Box Score Lewis Thorpe: 4.0 IP, 5 H, 1 ER, 0 BB, 4 K, 63.6% (49 of 77 pitches) HR: John Andreoli (5) Multi-hit games: None Not a whole lot to report from the first game of Rochester’s doubleheader. Lewis Thorpe had a solid, albeit short, start. His ERA has dropped from 8.19 down to 6.31 over his last three starts. Andrew Vasquez also had an encouraging outing, striking out three batters over 1 2/3 scoreless innings. The Wings’ only run scored on John Andreoli’s fifth home run of the season. Game 2: Pawtucket 6, Rochester 1 (7 innings) Box Score D.J. Baxendale: 2.0 IP, 5 H, 3 ER, 1 BB, 1 K, 52.2% strikes (24 of 46 pitches) HR: None Multi-hit games: None Yep, these teams played two games that ended in the exact same score Friday. The Red Wings went with a bullpen game in this one. D.J. Baxendale gave up three runs in his two innings of work and Zack Weiss surrendered three runs in 2 1/3 inning. Ryan Eades followed with 1 2/3 scoreless innings before Trevor Hildenberger pitched a clean seventh inning. Between the majors and Triple A, Hildenberger hadn’t registered a scoreless appearance in five outings, giving up 14 earned runs over 5 1/3 innings over that stretch. Here’s hoping tonight’s performance results in some positive momentum for him. The Red Wings mustered just three hits, Drew Maggi’s double being the only one that went for extra bases. Their only run was scored on a Jake Cave bases-loaded double play. BLUE WAHOO BITES Tennessee 5, Pensacola 1 Box Score Jorge Alcala: 4.0 IP, 6 H, 5 R, 3 ER, 5 BB, 2 K, 68.7% (46 of 67 pitches) HR: None Multi-hit games: None Sam Clay started this game with two shutout innings before Jorge Alcala took over and struggled as the primary pitcher, though only two of the five runs he gave up were earned. On the other hand, the only reason he had unearned runs was because he committed an error. Tom Hackimer did a great job in his two scoreless innings, striking out three batters. He’s give up just one earned run in 21 2/3 innings this season. Again here, not much to report on the offensive side. The Blue Wahoos combined for just five singles. Their only run scored on an Alex Kirilloff two-out RBI single. Kirilloff also had an outfield assist. Travis Blankenhorn was 1-for-4 and stole his third base of the season. MIRACLE MATTERS Daytona 4, Fort Myers 3 (11 innings) Box Score Tyler Watson: 6.0 IP, 5 H, 3 R, 2 ER, 0 BB, 5 K, 58.2% strikes (56 of 79 pitches) HR: Ryan Jeffers (4) Multi-hit games: Trevor Larnach (2-for-3, 2 2B, 2 BB), Ryan Jeffers (2-for-4, HR, BB) The Miracle trailed 3-0 in the top of the eighth inning, but a Lewin Diaz leadoff triple sparked a three-run rally capped by a Ryan Jeffers home run. Unfortunately, Fort Myers couldn’t scratch across another run. The pitching staff did an excellent job keeping Daytona off the board from the sixth through 10th innings, but finally ceded in the bottom of the 11th. The 2019 MLB Draft is right around the corner, and it was great to see the first two Twins picks of last year’s draft put together great performances. Trevor Larnach hit two doubles and drew a pair of walks. In addition to his fourth home run, Jeffers had a single and drew a walk. KERNELS NUGGETS Peoria 4, Cedar Rapids 1 Box Score Tyler Palm: 6.2 IP, 6 H, 2 ER, 0 BB, 5 K, 66.3% strikes (61 of 92 pitches) HR: None Multi-hit games: Ben Rodriguez (2-for-4, 2B) My oh my were runs tough to come by Friday night. Tyler Palm had a very nice start, pitching into the seventh inning while only allowing two runs, but the bats were quiet. Five hits total and the only run came on an Andrew Bechtold sacrifice fly. He also doubled in this game. Because of the Twins 35 pitch in an inning limit, Thorpe was forced to leave the game after the first inning. Despite being down in a hole early, the Red Wings offense took action by scoring seven unanswered runs during the second through fourth innings. Going into the ninth knotted at eight a piece, Drew Maggi hit a leadoff double which was backed up by a Nick Gordon double immediately after which gave the Red Wings the lead. Two wild pitches from Jenrry Mejia allowed Gordon to move to third and then subsequently score to give the Red Wings a 10-8 lead. Despite only getting one inning from the starter, the Red Wings bullpen, made up of efforts from D.J. Baxendale, Austin Adams, Andrew Vasquez, and Preston Guilmet, was able to fire off eight innings of two-run ball that came with 11 punchouts and probably a solid pat on the back from the manager. Randy Dobnak had a solid Double-A debut outing and he would have gotten the win had he reached the five-inning mark but that honor went to Adam Bray who fired off a pair of scoreless innings to continue his absolute tear so far this year. Tyler Jay finished off the game with three scoreless innings of his own. The Blue Wahoos bats were at it all game as they scored in every inning except for the fourth and eight where they finally decided to show a bit of mercy to the Shuckers. Miguel Sano went 0-for-2 with a walk and two strikeouts along with a sacrifice fly in the fifth and he also apparently hit an absolutely monster foul ball home run. Also of note, Alex Kirilloff made his start at first base, something he had not done in his professional career yet. I’ll write about Charlie with glee.) Anyways, the Miracle played quite the thriller of a game this Saturday. The scoring was kicked off early by the Cardinals as they put a run across in both the first, second, and fourth innings respectively. Luckily for the Miracle, Aaron Whitefield hates baseballs as much as he hates three-run deficits, so he launched his second homer of the year in the fifth inning to make it a 3-1 game. The Cardinals answered back with two more runs in the sixth, but it could have been worse had Trevor Larnach not gunned down the hopeful third run at the plate to keep the score 5-1. The Miracle scratched two runs together in the eighth thanks to some wild pitch and passed ball shenanigans to make the game a close 5-3 affair. The top of the ninth started with a Ryan Costello single but unfortunately, the next two batters would get out. Now with two outs in the ninth, Royce Lewis would work a walk to move Costello to second. Trevor Larnach then would single him home to make it just a one-run game. Kernels pitchers also only surrendered four hits total in the game, but the Dragons were opportunistic as they took advantage of an error in the fourth and a balk in the fifth to help with their scoring. Jacob Pearson had a big day offensively as he blasted his second homer of the year and walked twice along with scoring both of the runs for the Kernels. Hopefully this game will be the launching point of his season and he starts to improve his .503 OPS on the year. Fort Myers again used a two-run, and one-run inning to push themselves out to a 3-1 lead. This was game two of the series, but the result remained the same. With the victory, Fort Myers wins the 2018 Florida State League South Division Series and advances to the Championship Series. Both teams combined to hold serve through two innings in this one. Jose Miranda broke the action open with a two-run blast, scoring Alex Kirilloff, in the top of the third. Fort Myers did end up giving one of those back in the bottom half however. Fast forward to the sixth, and Mark Contreras drove in Travis Blankenhorn on a sacrifice fly to allow the Miracle some breathing room. Clark Beeker worked one out shy of five innings in this one, and despite allowing five hits, he gave up just one run with two walks and four strikeouts. E-TWINS E-TALK Elizabethton 2, Princeton 1 Box Score This one was a barnburner, and while pitching was where the game was won, it was the E-Twins that had enough to get the job done. Prelander Berroa turned in five strong innings allowing just one run on four hits and a walk, while striking out four. Tyler Palm who tallied the final four innings, picked up the win. Coming out on top 2-1, the Elizabethton Twins take home a second straight Appalachian League title, number eight for manager Ray Smith. After getting behind by a run in the third inning, DaShawn Keirsey doubled home Gilberto Celestino to knot things at one in the fourth. With the innings and at-bats dwindling, Celestino doubled to drive in Yunior Severino for the go-ahead run in the eighth. Elizabethton saw a handful of new and exciting prospects come and go this season, and the end result being a ring on their finger has to bookend a feeling of accomplishment.
