As has been the expectation now for week, the St. Paul Saints will officially join the Minnesota Twins organization in 2021 per reports from the Star Tribune. Previously playing in the American Association as an Independent Baseball team, they’ll now assume the role of the Twins Triple-A affiliate. For years there has been talk about the convenience having an affiliate just down I-94 would provide the Twins. Then during the pandemic shortened season, CHS Field acted as the alternate site for the Major League club. With Major League Baseball throwing around its weight and controlling baseball across the country, a massive reshuffling has taken place. Gone are roughly 40 minor league clubs as 120 total affiliates is the new number. Regional restructuring has taken place, and new draft feeder leagues have emerged. Impacting the Twins is a new partner at the highest minor league level. Having been affiliated with the Rochester Red Wings since 2003, the Minnesota Twins will now turn a new chapter in their developmental history. The Saints were founded in 1993 and were originally part of the Northern League prior to joining the American Association. As it’s the Saints joining the Twins organization, they’ll inherit talent from within. Minnesota will now send Triple-A destined prospects to St. Paul rather than Rochester. This means that the players previously under contract with the Saints will be displaced throughout Independent Baseball. Per reporter Chelsea Ladd, there have been talks the American Association will hold a draft of sorts to find those players new teams. Also, of note is the Twins swapping their Double-A affiliate. After just one season working with the Pensacola Blue Wahoos, the Twins will now join forces with the Wichita Wind Surge. The Wind Surge were originally scheduled to operate as the Miami Marlins Triple-A affiliate, with 2020 being their first season. Obviously with the pandemic that never happened. It’s not great news for Wichita, who will drop a level in with the affiliation, but Minnesota inherits a closer Double-A club and one that is opening a brand-new ballpark and facilities. Certainly, Major League Baseball expanding its reach across Major League, Minor League, and now even amateur baseball is a suboptimal development. Having such a monopoly over the sport, ownership groups continue to line their pockets while paydays for future generations of talent can continue to be stifled. However, if you’re simply a Twins fan, having the ability to watch future franchise pieces just 13 miles from Target Field, and a driveable journey to Wichita as a possibility, isn’t the worst silver lining. For years, the St. Paul Saints possibility has been kicked around, and now in the first year it will happen top prospects like Royce Lewis, Alex Kirilloff, Jordan Balazovic, and Jhoan Duran should all be featured for a time in St. Paul. We may have to wait through the waning stages of a pandemic to see them in person, but a new era of baseball in Twins Territory has been ushered in. For more from Off The Baggy, click here. After a long and arduous battle over financials and restart principles leading up to Opening Day, we’ve finally got a level of consistency and schedule from Major League Baseball. Despite the best efforts of the Miami Marlins attempting to bring the league to its knees, virtually every other team has navigated what can be described as a new normal. https://twitter.com/StPaulSaints/status/1288880158401863680 While the effects of this global pandemic rage on in the world around us, the goal is still returning to a greater sense of normalcy sooner rather than later. Although not a part of MLB, the St. Paul Saints are taking the next step in their similar goals. After having played their season in the hub city of Sioux Falls, South Dakota to this point, they’ll return home to CHS Field on August 4th and fans will be in the ballpark. Their next-door neighbors may not be long behind them. KSTP’s Darren Wolfson noted on his latest version of The Scoop podcast that the Twins are loosely targeting August 14th as a date of return for fans in a limited capacity. Minnesota is currently scheduled to return home against the Kansas City Royals on that date, and they’d be 19 games into their 60-game schedule by that point. https://twitter.com/DWolfsonKSTP/status/1288889770911961088 Obviously, and as Wolfson also noted on Twitter, any return of fans would be subject to MLB approval. Currently the Twins are utilizing the concourses and suites as additional space to distance themselves while working out and getting ready for game time. While fans would be undoubtedly distanced throughout the ballpark, their presence would cannibalize some of the space presently helping the big leaguers work. As has been the case from the outset of the restart, MLB ownership is looking for additional revenue streams as often and as quickly as possible. Despite the notion that owning a franchise “isn’t very profitable” the more likely reality is that revenues, while still present, aren’t in the stratospheric levels this season. Owners are looking to drive them back up any way they can, and that certainly includes the introduction of a 16-team Postseason format. There’s a handful of different realities that could be in play regarding fans craving baseball action in 2020. Wolfson noted that the Twins home opener drew record numbers on Fox Sports North, and with fans all confined to their couches that makes a good deal of sense. It’s a bit unfortunate that MLB spent so much time hashing out labor disputes during the restart and failed to find ways to draw in new fans. The return of sports was always bound to be well received but converting those from other programming or holding onto casual onlookers while other leagues now restart, should have always been the goal. We’re not close to out of the woods when it comes to the impact felt from COVID-19. Ultimately it will be the progress that we make on that end allowing Dave St. Peter and the Minnesota Twins to bring Twins Territory back home. The wheels are in motion though, and if we can all continue to do our part, maybe MLB will grant us an opportunity for overpriced beer and a beautiful skyline this summer after all. The keys to success for St. Paul were shutdown pitching and clutch offense. On the mound. Kramer Sneed continued to lead the way for the Saints earning his American Association record tying 15th victory in Thursday's 4-1 win over the Railcats. Robert Coe also continued his roll of stellar starts, winning twice during the stand. Ben Szeremeta writes about the Saints regularly at SaintsTrain.com A victory Friday night in the series finale versus Gary showed us something we haven't seen all year: a walk-off win. The Saints won the game 8-7 when Vinny DiFazio scored on a wild pitch in the bottom of the ninth. They then decided it was so much fun, why not do it again Sunday? This time they bested the Jackals 3-2 on an Anthony Phillips single to center. Simply put, there was a "playoff atmosphere" inside CHS Field for the walk-off wins. During the ninth inning of both games, everyone was standing and cheering for almost every pitch. Even the players were getting in to it, waving to the fans to cheer louder. Man, I can't wait for the first home playoff game. It's going to be electric. My MVP for the stand is Ryan Cavan. The newly acquired second baseman hit .375 with three doubles, four runs scored, and two home runs for the stand. To go along with Sneed's record for victories a few other franchise marks were set this homestand as well. Alonzo Harris swiped his 39th base of the year Monday. Also, Vinny DiFazio and Angelo Songco tied for the most RBIs in a season at 82. When record-breaking seasons happen, awards always seem to follow, and this year is no different. To start, catcher Vinny DiFazio and first baseman Angelo Songco were both named postseason All-Stars after their great seasons at the plate. Songco finished the year batting .339 with 64 R, 17 HR and 82 RBI. DiFazio hit .361, with 70 R, 17 HR and 82 RBI. Vinny DiFazio also took home the league's top award of the season, being named the 2015 American Association Player of the Year. Vinny led the league in batting average, tied for third in home runs and tied for the lead in RBI. A near Triple Crown - wow. Great season Vinny! Reliever Mike Zouzalik was named Rookie of the Year after going 4-1 with a 2.06 ERA. He also recorded three saves and had 49 strikeouts in 48 innings pitched while holding his opponents to a .140 batting average for the year. But it's not only the players that can set records in St. Paul this year. For the first time the Saints passed 400,000 in season attendance, setting a new franchise record with 404,528 fans visiting the Field in 2015. That bested the previous mark by more than 105,000. After a well-deserved day off Tuesday the Saints headed to Sioux City for the first two games of their series with the Explorers. The final three games will be played at CHS Field. You might be asking yourself, why do the top two teams in the league play each other in the first round? It's all about geography in the American Association. The other matchup is between the Wichita Wingnuts and the Laredo Lemurs. So while we don't get a championship round match-up between the two best teams record wise, we at least get to see them play each other. The opening game of the playoffs was just what you'd expect, a nail-biter of a contest till the last out. Kramer Sneed tossed a complete game with a career high 15 strikeouts. Angelo Songco went 2-5 with a home run and 2 RBI. But in the end it wasn't enough as the Saints lost the game 3-2 to the Explorers. The second game is one the Saints need to forget on the bus ride back to St. Paul. The lost 12-1, managing just one hit, a solo home run by Angelo Songco in the 2nd inning. Tossing 7.2 innings for Sioux City was Patrick Johnson, the 2015 American Association Pitcher of the Year. Even with our home team down 0-2 in the series I can't wait for the first playoff game at CHS Field this Saturday. The boys have played great at home and I know the fans are going to do their best to cheer them on to three straight victories. There are still tickets left, the weather's going to be perfect, and it's playoff baseball. What are you waiting for? Get to CHS Field Saturday night and let's show them all what home field advantage really means! Go Saints!!! TRAIN!

Once again the Saints had an incredibly successful homestand at CHS Field. Surprising I know. Now they really need an incredibly successful homestand to keep the season alive. Starting September 1st, the good guys finished the 2015 regular season by sweeping a four game series with the Gary SouthShore Railcats. Then they took two of three from the New Jersey Jackals to close out the schedule, ending the year at a franchise best 74-26. Next up was a showdown with the only team in the league with a better record, the 75-25 Sioux City Explorers. But more on that in a minute. The keys to success for St. Paul were shutdown pitching and clutch offense. On the mound. Kramer Sneed continued to lead the way for the Saints earning his American Association record tying 15th victory in Thursday's 4-1 win over the Railcats. Twins Daily & BFFs (Baseball, Food, Fireworks) Celebrate With The Saints
John Bonnes posted an article in Twins
After walking around the new ballpark with its unique architecture, most headed to the reserved seats. There was a lot of visiting, especially behind our section as there was a pretty consistent caravan between the Twins Daily seats and the craft beer area just a couple of sections away. The Saints won and nearly immediately afterwards was the impressive fireworks display. Thank you everyone for coming to the event. And if you didn't make it, don't give up hope. We may have another Saints event later this season. Here are a few more pictures:
