He allowed five runs on six hits while striking out four. Balazovic did give up a walk and was burned by two homers. A five-run 3rd inning by Indianapolis put St. Paul in a bad spot early. They gave up two more in the 6th inning and before recording their first run, the Saints were staring at a seven-run deficit. Ryan Jeffers, still working his way back on a Major League rehab assignment, hit a homer in the 8th inning to make sure the Saints wouldn’t be shut out. Trevor Larnach, also rehabbing, went 1-for-3 with a walk and a strikeout as the designated hitter. Keoni Cavaco, SS (Low-A) Cavaco was a player that had shot up draft boards when the Twins drafted him back in 2019. He didn’t make many appearances at the big prep events leading into the draft and so there were questions about how he would fare against tougher professional competition. His first professional season fed into those concerns as he hit .172/.217/.253 (.470) with 35 strikeouts in 87 at-bats. As an 18-year-old, he looked overmatched and missing development time last year only added more questions. He has started the 2021 season on a rampage at Low-A as he entered play on Thursday hitting .355/.444/.516 (.916) with three extra-base hits in 31 at-bats. He is still striking out in over 22% of his at-bats, but he seems more than comfortable on the offensive side of the ball. Cavaco is over a year younger than the average age of the competition at his level, and he has faced older pitchers in 86% of his plate appearances. Yennier Cano, RHP (Double-A) Cano was a late signing back in the 2019 international signing period as they inked him to a $750,000 bonus. At the time, MLB.com had him ranked as the second-best international prospect in his class. When he signed, he was 25-years old, which is old for a prospect, but that also means he came with plenty of professional experience. He joined the Twins with five different pitches and the ability to pitch multiple innings each time out. Now, Cano is 27-years old and pitching out of Wichita’s bullpen. So far this year, he has posted a 1.59 ERA with a 1.06 WHIP. Those numbers are great, but his strikeout numbers are what truly make him standout. He has struck out 11 of the 24 batters he has faced for a 17.5 SO/9. He’s old for his current level, but he has only pitched 15 innings since signing with the Twins. Look for him to move quickly if he continues to strikeout batters at a high rate. Melvi Acosta, RHP (High-A) Acosta is entering his fifth professional season after joining the Twins as an international signee out of Venezuela in 2015. During the 2019 season, he split time as a starter and reliever. There were some positive signs in his transition to the bullpen as he saw his strikeout rate improve from 5.8 SO/9 to 9.9 SO/9. The 2020 season would have allowed him to prove that he was a potential weapon out of the bullpen, but that obviously didn’t happen. Fast-forward to 2021 and Acosta will get the opportunity to pitch out of the bullpen on a regular basis. He’s made three appearances for Cedar Rapids and posted a 1.42 ERA with seven strikeouts in 6 1/3 innings. His strikeout rate (9.9 SO/9) has continued to stay high, and batters are having a tough time reaching base against him as he’s posted a 0.79 WHIP. Like Cano, he is old for his level, but maybe he will have the opportunity to follow in Cano’s footsteps as he moves up the organizational ladder. TRANSACTIONS The Twins put LHP Adalberto Mejia on the Injured List with a “strained right calf.” RHP Mike Morin was added to the 40-man roster and called up to the Twins. SS Nick Gordon was activated from the Injured List. LHP Devin Smeltzer was promoted to the Red Wings and will start on Friday. OF Alex Kirilloff was activated from the Pensacola Injured List. RHP Andro Cutura was placed on the Injured List, and RHP Dusten Knight was placed on the Restricted List in Pensacola. (In other words, he has been suspended.) RHP Randy Dobnak and RHP Alex Phillips were promoted from Ft. Myers to Pensacola. RHP Joe Record was promoted from Cedar Rapids to Ft. Myers. RHP Moises Gomez and RHP Rickey Ramirez were promoted to the Miracle from Extended Spring Training. RHP Andrew Cabezas was activated from the Cedar Rapids Injured List. Phil Miller also wrote that following Game 1 of the Miracle doubleheader, Miguel Sano packed up his stuff and was moving up to Pensacola to start playing for the Blue Wahoos this weekend. I think that’s it… Uffdah! RED WINGS REPORT Rochester 3, Scranton/Wilkes Barre 7 Box Score After missing the first month of the season, Nick Gordon made his season debut for the Red Wings. He singled in his first at bat and ended the game 3-for-5. Jordany Valdespin was the only other player with more than one hit. He went 2-for-3 with a walk. He also stole his second base. Ryan Eades was the “opener” for the Red Wings. He gave up just one hit over two scoreless innings. Chase De Jong came on as the “primary” pitcher. He gave up four runs on seven hits, three walks and a hit batter over four innings. He also threw two wild pitches. He struck out three. He falls to 0-3 with a 16.20 ERA. Jake Reed was next to the mound. He threw one scoreless inning and then gave up three runs in the bottom of the eighth inning. He gave up three hits, walked three and struck out one. BLUE WAHOO BITES Pensacola 0, Biloxi 1 Box Score Alex Kirillloff made his return to a lineup after missing the first month with a wrist injury. He also made his Double-A debut after just half of a season last year with the Miracle. He flew out to deep center field in his first at bat. He was intentionally walked his second time to bat. He struck out the next two times he batted. Jorge Alcala made the start for the Wahoos. He threw five shutout innings. Cody Stashak worked the final two innings. He struck out five batters, but he was charged with an unearned run and took the loss. Pensacola had just three hits in the game. Jaylin Davis went 2-for-3 with a walk. Luis Arraez added a single. Ernie De La Trinidad walked twice. MIRACLE MATTERS The Miracle had a doubleheader on Thursday after their Wednesday afternoon game was rained out. Game 1 - Ft. Myers 4, Clearwater 3 Box Score The Miracle fell behind Clearwater 3-0 in the first inning, but they kept clawing their way back and won in walkoff fashion. With two runners on and one out in the bottom of the seventh, Trevor Larnach singled in Akil Baddoo from second base to give the Miracle the Game 1 win. Miguel Sano starred for the Miracle. In his first at bat, he singled. In the fourth inning, he hit a two-run homer to cut the deficit to 3-2. The next inning, he came through again with a two-out, RBI bloop single to tie the game. In the bottom of the seventh, he recorded his fourth hit of the game, a single to left field before being removed for a pinch runner. Royce Lewis went 2-for-3 with a walk in the game. It marked his third multi-hit game in his last four games. In addition to his walkoff single, Larnach added his team-leading eighth double. Jhoan Duran gave up three runs in the first inning. He needed 32 pitches to get through the inning, but since he didn’t hit the Magic Number of 35 pitches in the inning, he continued. He gave up only those three runs on seven hits over five innings. He struck out six batters without issuing a walk. Hector Lujan is credited with the win. He worked two scoreless innings. He gave up one hit, walked one and struck one out. Game 2 - Ft. Myers 1, Clearwater 0 Box Score Melvi Acosta has been a swingman throughout his career with the Twins. He’s worked out of the bullpen, in long relief, and occasionally starting. With the doubleheader, he had the chance to make a spot start and it couldn’t have gone much better. Acosta worked six shutout innings. He gave up four hits, hit one batter and struck out three. He threw 71 pitches. 46 of them were strikes. Moises Gomez, called up from extended spring training earlier in the day, threw a one-two-three seventh inning to record the save. The Miracle bats were quiet as well in a 1-0 game. Michael Helman led the way, going 2-or-3 in the game. Lewin Diaz doubled and scored the game’s lone run on a sacrifice fly off of the bat of Ben Rortvedt. In his second game with the MIracle, Trey Cabbage doubled for his first Florida State League hit. Shortstop Dalton Guthrie had a triple in three at-bats for Clearwater. He was the Twins 40th round pick out of high school in 2014. He also is the son of 1991 Twins World Series champion Mark Guthrie. Dalton was the Phillies sixth-round pick in 2017 out of Florida. Alec Bohm was the third overall pick in the 2018 draft out of Wichita State. He was promoted to the Threshers before this series. The third baseman went 1-for-7 in the doubleheader. Clearwater’s Game 2 starter, Colton Eastman, was the Twins 20th round pick in 2015 out of high school. He went to Cal State-Fullerton and was the Phillies fourth-round pick in 2018. KERNELS NUGGETS Cedar Rapids 0, Bowling Green 2 Box Score Andrew Cabezas returned from the IL and got right back on the mound. He pitched well. He gave up one run on four hits in six innings. He walked two and struck out four batters. Brian Rapp came on and worked the final three innings. He gave up an unearned run on four hits. He struck out one. The Kernels had just five hits in the game. Estamy Urena went 2-for-3 with a double. MIRACLE MATTERS Fort Myers 2, Daytona 6 Box Score After taking the first two games of the three-game series, the Miracle were looking to sweep the Tortugas to take their second FSL championship in five years. Unfortunately, the offense would be few and far between for Fort Myers. With one out in the first inning, Brusdar Graterol surrendered a walk and a single before a double drove in the first run of the game. On the same play, Alex Kirilloff hit the cut-off man, Travis Blankenhorn, to nail the second runner at the plate. Graterol allowed three singles in the third as Daytona pushed their lead to 2-0. Overall, Graterol allowed two earned runs on seven hits. He struck out six and walked one. The Miracle finally broke through in the sixth inning as Royce Lewis lead off the inning with his second home run of the postseason. In the bottom half of the inning, Ryan Mason took over for Graterol and quickly gave back a run. He’d end up pitching two innings while allowing one run on two hits. He struck out three and walked one. Lewis struck again in the eighth inning with his second solo-shot of the game. Fort Myers was within a run of tying the game but that’s as close as the team would come. Colton Davis struggled in the eighth inning as he allowed three runs to score on two hits and two walks. Fort Myers has another shot at clinching the FSL Championship on Monday night. KERNELS NUGGETS Cedar Rapids 0, Peoria 5 Box Score Cedar Rapids nearly took the first lead of the game in the top of the third inning. Trey Cabbage tripled to start the inning but he was thrown out at home during the next at-bat. Akil Baddo grounded to second base and Cabbage broke for home but didn’t make it. One big inning spelled the end of the Kernels season. With Blayne Enlow on the mound, the first two batters reached to start the problem. He struck out the next batter but than he hit a batter to load the bases. Three straight singles and a wild pitch saw five runners cross the plate. The Kernels wouldn’t have a batter reach third base the rest of the game. Cedar Rapids went 0-for-5 with runners in scoring position and left seven runners on base. Ryan Jeffers and Ben Rodriguez both went 2-for-4. Melvi Acosta pitched four shutout innings out of the bullpen as he only allowed three hits. Moises Gomez pitched a perfect final frame by striking out the side. RED WINGS REPORT Rochester 4, Norfolk 3 Box Score Rochester found themselves down 3-1 as they stepped to the plate in the fifth inning. Lucky enough for them, Tim Melville and a pair of bullpen arms combined for five straight shutout innings to end the game. Melville collected two outs in the seventh before ending his day and was credited with his fourth win. He hasn't lost in over a month and he has pitched into the seventh inning in four of his last five appearances. Nik Turley finished off the seventh and pitched the eighth for his first hold. Alex Wimmers earned his sixth save with a perfect ninth inning. Zack Granite used his speed to create a run in the first inning. He led off with a single and hustled all the way to third on a Mitch Garver single. Kennys Vargas brought him home with a sacrifice fly to tie the game at 1-1. In the fifth inning, Engelb Vielma reached on a fielding error which allowed him to get all the way to second. Daniel Palka used a two-out single to plate the run and cut the lead to 3-2. The sixth inning was when the Red Wings were finally able to take the lead. Kennys Vargas singled to start the inning. Niko Goodrum got a pitch down the middle of the plate and parked it for a go-ahead two-run homer. It was his first home run since July 26th and he set a new career-high with his tenth home run of the season. CHATTANOOGA CHATTER Chattanooga 4, Birmingham 7 Box Score Fernando Romero was scheduled to start on Sunday but he is closing in on his innings limit for the season. This meant a shift in the Lookouts rotation with Felix Jorge getting the nod on Sunday and DJ Baxendale taking Monday's start. Things didn't go smoothly for Jorge as he failed to make it through five innings for the first time since July 23rd. He left the game after being charged with three earned runs on five hits with six strikeouts and three walks. Randy Rosario cleaned up the fifth inning and pitched the sixth to help keep the Lookouts in the game. Rehabbing Glen Perkins ran into a rough spot in the seventh after having seen Chattanooga tie the game in the top half of the frame. He walked a batter, got a sacrifice bunt, struck out a batter, and walked another batter. With two outs, he was removed with runners on the corners. Sam Clay replaced Perkins and walked the first three batters he faced but both of those runs were charged to Perkins. Overall, Clay was charged with five walks and he was asked to collect only four outs. Nick Gordon started the sixth with his 27th double and then moved to third on a Edgar Corcino single. LaMonte Wade brought him in with a sacrifice fly to start the team's scoring. Max Murphy doubled to start the seventh inning and moved to third on back-to-back walks from Carlos Paulino and Alex Perez. A wild pitch allowed all three runners to advance with Murphy scoring. Levi Michael brought in a run with a ground out. Gordon walked to load the bases again before Corcino singled to drive in another run. MIRACLE MATTERS Fort Myers 11, Dunedin 7 Box Score Every batter in the Miracle line-up reached base as the team pounded out 14 hits and 11 runs. Tanner English and Zander Wiel led the way with each reaching base four times. English had a pair of doubles and scored three runs while Wiel fell a home run short of the cycle. Jermain Palacios drove in three runs as part of a multi-hit day. Brandon Lopez didn't record a hit but reached base three times on free passes. Brady Anderson allowed one earned run on four hits with a strikeout and a walk. Keaton Steele pitched three innings as he allowed two hits and one earned run. Tom Hackimer pitched to six batters in the ninth and didn't record an out. He was charged with five runs on two hits with four walks. Alex Muren was called on to collect the final three outs. He allowed one hit and he struck out two. Both runs scored with Muren on the mound were charged to Hackimer. KERNELS NUGGETS Cedar Rapids 7, Quad Cities 6 Box Score Things were looking glum for the Kernels even though the club held an early 3-1 lead. Charlie Barnes got knocked around for five runs in the third inning to see the team's lead evaporate. This included three home runs and one of those home runs was a grand slam. Evan Sanders and Patrick McGuff combined to pitched six shutout innings while only allowing one hit. This kept things close and set up a dramatic bottom of the ninth. With the Kernels down by three, Jimmy Kerrigan and Lewin Diaz singled to start the frame. Caleb Hamilton walked to load the bases before a Shane Carrier run-scoring single cut the lead to two. Trey Cabbage walked in a run and then Joe Cronin sent everyone home happy with a walk-off single. Royce Lewis was held to a 1-for-4 effort but he did score a run. Carrier finished the game 2-for-4 with two RBI and a double. Aaron Whitefield collected his eleventh home run of the year, a two-run shot. E-TWINS E-NOTES Elizabethton 12, Johnson City 1 Box Score The E-Twins used some timely hitting and a strong start from Melvi Acosta to move 11 games over .500. Acosta earned his fifth win by tossing seven innings of one-run ball. The seven innings were the most he's thrown since July 22nd of last season. Jovani Moran pitched two scoreless innings to end the game while collecting strikeouts for five of the six outs he recorded. No batter in the E-Twins line-up had more than two hits but every starter reached base at least once and scored at least one run. Kolton Kendrick, Andrew Bechtold, Mark Contreras and Matt Albanese all had two-hit games. Contreras drove in four runs including a two-run shot. Three of his four RBI came with two outs in the inning. Bechtold added a pair of doubles to bring his season total to nine.
