Nelson Cruz is the newest member of the Tampa Bay Rays. This offseason Tampa was among the final suitors in contention to land his services. Minnesota ended up bring back the 40-year-old and he’s picked up right where he left off. Unfortunately for the Twins, their season has gone as anything but expected, and they find themselves as a clear seller. The best designated hitter in the American League stays in that role and gives Tampa another thumper in the middle of their lineup. Given Cruz’s advanced age and contract status, it was hard to fathom much of a return. Minnesota instead included Calvin Faucher as a throw in prospect and landed Joe Ryan and Drew Strotman, Tampa’s 10th and 17th best prospects per MLB pipeline. Both may be relievers, and are already past their 24th birthdays, but they have high velocity stuff and already are at Triple-A. For an organization needing arm talent as both starters and in the bullpen, this is a real solid get for a guy that wasn’t going to be around in a couple of months. Ryan will need to be added to the 40 man this winter, with Strotman already holding down a spot. Cruz leaves as a fan favorite, one of the most productive players in history, and having done so as a leading member of a record setting homer club. Nelson Cruz is about to be a Tampa Bay Ray. One of the finest DHs in Twins history is Piece #1 of what could be several Twins trades before the July 30th deadline. Just minutes ago, several national baseball writers, including Jeff Passan announced that the Twins and Rays have reached a deal for the reigning AL champions from Tampa to add slugging DH Nelson Cruz. According to Bob Nightengale, the deal will involve four players including pitcher Drew Strotman. The Twins have made it official, noting the Wichita right-handed reliever Calvin Faucher will also be going to the Rays. In return, the Twins will get pitchers Strotman and Joe Ryan. The Players Drew Stotman is a 24-year-old right-handed pitcher. He has spent 2021 with the Rays Triple-A affiliate in Durham, NC. He is 7-2 with a 3.39 ERA and a 1.42 WHIP. In 58 1/3 innings, he has given up 50 hits, walked and struck out 62 batters. He was the Rays fourth round pick in 2017 out of St. Mary's in California. Joe Ryan is a 25-year old right-hander. He has spent the season with Triple-A Durham as well. He is 4-3 with a 3.63 ERA and a 0.79 WHIP. In 57 innings, he has given up 35 hits, walked just ten and struck out 75 batters. He was the team's 7th round pick in 2018 out of Cal State-Stanislaus. The two have combined to make 23 starts for Durham and worked twice out of the bullpen. Ryan ranks as the Rays #10 prospect while Stotman ranked #17. Calvin Faucher was the Twins 10th round pick in 2017 out of UC-Irvine. In 30 2/3 innings with Double-A Wichita, he posted a 7.04 ERA and a 2.05 WHIP. He is a good athlete on the mound. But let's be honest, we're here, right now, to learn about the prospects coming to the Twins from the Rays organization, and to thank Nelson Cruz for two-and-a-half terrific seasons. Nelson Cruz won the AL Silver Slugger for DH his first two years with the team. He finished in the Top 10 in MVP voting both years as well. In 2021, at 41, he is again having a terrific season and represented the Twins at the All-Star game last week. In his time with the Twins, Cruz played in 258 games. He hit .304/.386/.598 (.984) with 435 doubles, 76 home runs and 191 RBI. He was clearly the leader in the clubhouse. He has won humanitarian award for his community service in the cities he has played in as well as his home in the Dominican Republic. The Rays head into Thursday games with a 57-39 record, one game back of the Boston Red Sox in the AL East. They are the current leader in the race for an AL Wild Card spot. They have a need at DH. When Twins legend Harmon Killebrew passed away in 2011, the Twins honored his legacy off the field by creating the Harmon Killebrew Award for Community Service. There would be one player selected from each of the Twins four, full-season minor league affiliates.Over this week, we have introduced you to three of the four Killebrew Award winners. Today, we will briefly introduce you to the 2019 Killebrew Award winner for the Ft. Myers Miracle, RHP Calvin Faucher.Calvin Faucher was the Twins 10th-round draft pick in 2010 out of UC-Irvine. He signed quickly and spent that summer in Elizabethton. He pitched mostly in Cedar Rapids in 2018. In 2019, Faucher moved up to Ft. Myers and went 3-2 with two saves and a 4.42 ERA. In 55 innings, he struck out 61 batters. Off the field, Faucher made an impression by being active in the Ft. Myers community. He kept himself busy throughout the season with a variety of activities. The Miracle have always hosted several camps for kids and Faucher was happy to volunteer. Recently he told Twins Daily, “Yeah, we hosted a few kids camps at Hammond Stadium that were always fun. Local kids coming out and enjoying a day of baseball. We also held a disability dream and do camp at the stadium as a team, which is always great, not only for the participants but also for the players. Being able to help kids that aren’t able to get out and play sports as often, to get them out and enjoying sports and letting loose and being active with a smile on their faces.” The miracle also are frequently seen at Ft. Myers area hospitals visiting sick children. “We also went to Golisano Children’s Hospital in Fort Myers. Being able to do this was very special to me. My fellow teammates Joe Record, Bailey Ober, and I had the pleasure of being able to visit kids at the hospital. Being able to talk to the kids and hold conversations and just get their minds off of the illnesses that they have been battling, and putting smiles on their faces was awesome. Seeing how strong and positive these kids are while going through these battles really puts things into perspective of how there are bigger things than a game of baseball.” Faucher will soon turn 24 years old, and clearly he shows an advanced makeup and understanding of his role and responsibilities and the impact that he, as a professional athlete, can have on the youth. It’s also not lost on him the impact that Harmon Killebrew had on the communities he lived in and the impact he made. “I mean we all know Harmon Killebrew is a legend not only in the Minnesota Twins organization, but in baseball history as well. It was a long day in the Minnesota Twins' farm system on Tuesday, as three of their six affiliate’s games went into extra innings. Hits were also hard to come by overall on the night, but luckily their pitchers picked up the slack and helped them to victories in each of the contests that went extra frames. Devin Smeltzer also matched a top pitching prospect in the Blue Jays system in Triple-A, helping allow his offense to pull out a win.Keep reading to find out how all those extra innings played out and how all your favorite prospects performed on Tuesday! TRANSACTIONS There were the following player movements in the Twins system on Tuesday: In Triple-A, 3B Brian Schales was assigned to Fort Myers and RHP Griffin Jax to Pensacola, while RHP Trevor Hildenberger was activated from the injured list.With Jax returning to the Blue Wahoos, RHP Cole Sands was placed on theseven-day injured list in the Southern League.The Twins assigned their latest free agent acquisitions to the GCL Twins in the form of their latest independent league signing, C Eric Jones, and IF Adrian Guzman.RED WINGS REPORTBuffalo 1, Rochester 4 Box Score The Red Wings were able to get a big inning late to pull out a victory on Tuesday night against the Bisons at Frontier Field. Devin Smeltzer made the start and was effective for the first six innings, picking up a quality start. He allowed just one earned run on five hits and a walk, striking out three. The run came on solo homer in the second inning. In his first appearance since being promoted to AAA, Jorge Alcala worked two scoreless frames of relief. He walked one and struck out two to pick up his first Triple-A win. Off his rehab assignment in the GCL, Trevor Hildenberger closed out the ninth for his second save with Rochester on the season while allowing only a walk. Down 1-0 heading into the bottom of the eighth, the Red Wings offense finally broke through against the Bisons’ bullpen after top prospect and fireballer Nate Pearson’s day was finished. It wasn’t their bats however, but their patience as four hitters drew a walk before a Wilin Rosario two-RBI single gave them a 4-2 lead. Each team had just five hits on the game and all of the Red Wings knocks were singles. The teams combined to go just 2-for-7 with runners in scoring position and left nine men on base for the game. BLUE WAHOOS BITES Pensacola 4, Mississippi 2 (10 innings) Box Score Pensacola utilized the opener in this one, with Marcos Diplan handling the first two innings before “primary” (and scheduled starting) pitcher Edwar Colina entered the game. Diplan allowed one hit, walked one, and struck out four. Colina went the next three innings and was just as stingy by allowing only one hit and a walk while striking out three. Jonathan Cheshire got the next two frames and continued to hold the Braves scoreless by scattering three hits and striking out two. Mississippi was finally able to break the deadlock on the scoreboard in the bottom of the eighth against Alex Phillips thanks to a two-out triple that was followed by a single, a stolen base, and another single for the 2-0 lead heading into the ninth. The Blue Wahoos answer was a leadoff walk from Caleb Hamilton, an RBI triple from Mark Contreras, and sac fly from Jimmy Kerrigan to tie the game at two. Phillips delivered a one-two-three bottom of the inning to send it to extras. Royce Lewis started the inning on second base but got himself thrown out at third on a grounder to first from Alex Kirilloff, but it would not matter as Ryan Jeffers followed with his fourth home run with the Blue Wahoos to put them out front 4-2. Andrew Vasquez closed out the victory with a scoreless inning to earn his second save on the year with Pensacola, allowing only a walk. MIRACLE MATTERS Fort Myers 4, Charlotte 2 (13 innings) Box Score Just like their higher-level cousins, runs were hard to come by in the Florida State League for the Miracle and Stone Crabs on Tuesday, and they also required extra innings to declare a victor. Dakota Chalmers made the start for Fort Myers and was fantastic for his second turn in a row. He made it through 5 1/3 innings in this one, allowing just one run on three hits and three walks while striking out seven. In his past two outings he’s allowed just the one run on six hits and four walks in 11 1/3 innings while striking out 16. Calvin Faucher and Moises Gomez combined to hold Charlotte scoreless over the next 4 2/3 innings. Gomez allowed the only hit between them and struck out three, with Faucher punching out the first five of the six hitters he faced. Gomez also struck out himself…I think?! Joe Record came on for the 11th frame and would finish the game for the Miracle to pick up his fourth win. In three innings he allowed only an unearned run on one hit and two walks while punching out four. The Miracle got their first run of the game in the fourth inning to tie it at one when Trey Cabbage singled to score Jacob Pearson. In the top of the thirteenth a single from Yeltsin Encarnacion brought in Cabbage and Andrew Bechtold before a wild pitch allowed a third run to scamper home for a 4-1 lead that would hold. Despite playing four extra innings, the teams combined for just ten hits on the game while striking out 36 times. They were 5-for-32 with runners in scoring position and left 20 men on base between them. Pearson picked up two hits, including a double, and stole a base to lead the way. KERNELS NUGGETS Cedar Rapids 3, Quad Cities 9 Box Score The Kernels fell into an early hole against the River Bandits, and then dug themselves deeper and were unable to climb out against a team they’ve been battling in the Midwest League Western Division all season. Starter Kody Funderburk was roughed up for six earned runs in the outing. He allowed seven hits, walked four, and struck out three in his 4 1/3 innings. J.T. Perez didn’t fare much better in the next 1 2/3, giving up three runs on four hits and a walk, striking out two. Jose Martinez finished the final two innings for Cedar Rapids, and they finally were of the scoreless variety. He allowed two hits and struck out four. The Kernels were finally able to put a run on the scoreboard in the top of the eighth thanks to an RBI ground out from Spencer Steer after a throwing error on a pickoff attempt put a runner on third base. In the ninth they got two more courtesy of Jared Akins 11th home run of the season to account for the final tally. Tyler Webb and Daniel Ozoria contributed two hits each to the effort. E-TWINS E-NOTES Elizabethton 7, Princeton 6 (11 innings) Box Score Starter Cody Laweryson worked around some baserunners for the first three innings, but Princeton finally broke through with a run in the bottom of the fourth to take a 1-0 lead. Elizabethton answered with two runs in the top of the fifth thanks to a Matt Wallner home run, his sixth of the season, but Laweryson gave them right back with a home run allowed in the bottom half. Laweryson finished five innings, allowing the three runs on five hits and a walk along with striking out eight. The Twins tied it back up at three in the sixth when Seth Gray launched his ninth home run of the year, then the teams traded solo home runs in the eighth with Will Holland clubbing his seventh on the season to head into the ninth tied at four. After Laweryson’s exit, Owen Griffith contributed two scoreless innings, allowing one hit and striking out three. Tyler Beck allowed one run on three hits and a walk in his inning, striking out one. Benjamin Dum came on for the ninth and got them into extra innings, finishing two total innings. He allowed an unearned run on one hit while striking out two. Both teams were able to bring in the runner starting on second base in the tenth. In the top of the eleventh, Elizabethton got a leadoff double from Janigson Villalobos that put runners on second and third, then a throwing error allowed both of them to score for a 7-5 lead. For the bottom half the Twins summoned pitcher Denny Bentley and though he allowed the runner starting the extra frame on second to score on a sac fly, retired all three hitters he faced to close out a victory. The Twins got multiple hits from six hitters in their lineuptheir and were able to pull out the win despite going just 2-for-17 with runners in scoring position. Luckily for them, the Rays were also an inept 3-for-20. GCL TWINS TAKES GCL Pirates 10, GCL Twins 2 Box Score Righthander Regi Grace made the start for the GCL Twins squad and after a leadoff walk led to a run scoring in the first inning, he held the Pirates scoreless for his next two frames. In the fourth a two-out rally added two runs for a 3-0 deficit and an end to his outing. In four innings he allowed three earned runs on six hits and a walk while picking up seven strikeouts. The Pirates then poured it on against the bullpen, with Niall Windeler and Matthew Swain allowing a combined seven runs (three earned) from their two innings apiece. Jose Guevara pitched a scoreless ninth to finish the game for the Twins, walking one and striking out two. The Twins lineup wasn’t able to muster much offense with six hits and five walks on the game and finishing 0-for-5 with runners in scoring position. One of their runs scored on a throwing error, while the other came on a sac fly, both in the fifth inning. Third baseman Jake Hirabayashi picked up two hits in three at-bats, drew a walk, and scored a run to lead the way. Francisco Martinez contributed the sac fly, a walk, and the Twins only extra-base hit, a double, in the loss. While the Minnesota Twins were busy putting away the Tampa Bay Rays for a big series win on the road, Twins affiliates struggled on Sunday afternoon as they went 0-4 on the day. Despite that record, there were still some home runs from a few sluggers, and a pitcher making his debut in a new league had a solid outing, even though at the end it went a bit sour.To find out how all of your favorite Minnesota Twins prospects performed on Sunday, keep reading! TRANSACTIONS Before the Twins game on Sunday afternoon, they optioned RHP Zack Littell back to Rochester to clear room for Mitch Garver who was activated from the injured list.In Cedar Rapids, RHP Kai-Wei Teng was assigned to the Kernels from the GCL roster.RED WINGS REPORTBuffalo 9, Rochester 5 Box Score With Kohl Stewart on the mound for Rochester, the lineup gave him an early lead in the bottom of the second as Drew Maggi and Nick Gordon each drew bases-loaded walks with two outs. Stewart gave those runs right back in the third however on a double with the bases loaded. He would go on to allow another run in the fourth, then two more on a home run in the fifth before being pulled. In total Steward finished 4 1/3 innings, allowing five runs on six hits and three walks while striking out four. Zack Weiss came on to finish the fifth and added a scoreless sixth. In his 1 2/3 innings he allowed one run on four hits and struck out one. Trevor Hildenberger replaced him to start the seventh and he got a double-play ball after a leadoff single to end a threat. Back out for the eighth Hildy got two outs before giving way to Preston Guilmet while responsible for a runner on second base. Guilmet promptly gave up a home run to make the score 8-3 in favor of the Bisons. In the bottom of the eighth Zander Wiel led off the frame with a single, was tripled in by Jake Cave, and then Wynston Sawyer added an RBI double that made it 8-5 before any further threat was snuffed out. The Bisons added another home run off Guilmet in the ninth to make it 9-5, and the Red Wings needed a big rally to come back. Maggi singled to lead off the inning then Gordon drew a walk, but the next three hitters went down swinging and that was it for the ballgame. Sawyer finished the game 2-for-4, Brent Rooker went 1-for-2 with a run scored and two walks, and Gordon finished 1-for-3 with a run scored, triple, RBI, and two walks to lead the offense. BLUE WAHOOS BITES Jacksonville 9, Pensacola 6 Box Score The Jumbo Shrimp took a 3-0 lead against Blue Wahoos starter Bryan Sammons after scoring two in the third inning and one in the fourth while Pensacola’s offense was held at bay. Sammons finished five innings, allowing those three runs on five hits and two walks while striking out seven. The home team took the lead in the bottom of the sixth thanks to a big blast from Jaylin Davis, a three-run home run and his eighth of the year to make it 4-3. A batter earlier, Alex Kirilloff had got the Blue Wahoos on the scoreboard with an RBI single. The score stayed that way until the ninth inning as reliever Anthony Vizcaya delivered two scoreless frames, and Sam Clay followed with a scoreless eighth. Up by one, Clay was back out for the ninth inning, but some small ball after a lead-off walk led to an RBI single and a tie game. After going down one-two-three in the bottom half, this one was sent to extra-innings. Cody Stashak came on in the top of the 10th, and after recording an out, an error allowed a run to score for Jacksonville and they added another with an RBI double for a 6-4 lead. That’s when this happened: Before the inning was done Jacksonville had a 9-4 lead. All the runs in the inning were charged to Stashak, who recorded one out and allowed five runs (three earned) on two hits and a walk. Gore got a double-play ball to finally escape the inning. In the bottom of the tenth Travis Blankenhorn did his best to make it interesting by slugging his ninth home run with the Blue Wahoos, a two-run blast to cut the lead to three, but that was it for the home team. Blankenhorn has been pretty good so far with the Wahoos: As a team the Blue Wahoos had just six hits on the game and struggled to threaten in any other inning than the sixth. Kirilloff finished 2-for-5 with a run scored and an RBI, and is batting .351 in his last 10 games. MIRACLE MATTERS Fort Myers 2, Lakeland 9 Box Score For the first six innings on Sunday starting pitcher Cole Sands was in complete control while making his Florida State League debut. He had retired fourteen hitters in a row, including six strikeouts, when he came back out for seventh. The first batter of that inning reached on an error by Lewin Diaz at first base and may have thrown off his, and the entire teams, mojo from there. The next batter singled, and after a mound visit Sands gave up a three-run home run that put his team behind on the scoreboard and his day was done. The Miracle were holding a 2-0 lead before the seventh thanks to a solo home run from Trevor Larnach in the second inning, and an RBI single from Aaron Whitefield in the fifth to score Royce Lewis who had led off the inning with a single. Whitefield also stole second and third base in the inning but would end up stranded 90-feet away. There wasn’t much offense beyond that, as Fort Myers managed just six hits and a walk as a team, finished 1-for-4 with runners in scoring position, and left only four men on base for the game. Sands was replaced in the seventh by Joe Record, and the game unraveled even further for him as he allowed six runs (five earned) on five hits and a walk before medic Calvin Faucher brought some tourniquets with him to the mound. A sac fly and a strikeout from Faucher finally ended the inning. Faulcher added a one-two-three eighth inning, including two more Ks to finish the game for the Miracle. In his second rehab game with the Miracle, DH Nelson Cruz finished 1-for-3 with a strikeout. It’s looking likely he could rejoin the Twins in Cleveland. Lewis finished 2-for-4 and stole his 10th base of the season. KERNELS NUGGETS Cedar Rapids 1, Beloit 6 Box Score The Kernels offense was held in check all day as they managed just four hits as a team and went 0-for-7 with runners in scoring position. They got on the scoreboard thanks to a Gilberto Celestino home run in the third inning, his third of the season, but that was it. Celestino finished the game 2-for-3 and drew a walk and stole a base in addition to the home run. Chris Williams added a double and two walks. Andrew Cabezas got the start for Cedar Rapids and was solid for the first five innings. His only run allowed to that point had come on a solo home run in the second inning. In the sixth however, he was greeted by four consecutive singles and his day was done. In total, he pitched 5+ innings and allowed five runs on six hits and three walks. He struck out only one. Carlos Suniaga allowed three more singles in the sixth and a run of his own before getting out of the frame. Brian Rapp then came on and pitched two scoreless innings, allowing one hit and one walk while striking out two.
