Article: Twins Call Up Jorge Polanco Directly From Single-A

But apparently LEN3 is wrong on DL.

Who saw that coming?

They had to make a move to shore up the IF. This really tells you that they value everyone currently on the 40-man.

Yeah they had to do something.

But ignore the DL thing. LEN3 appears to have it wrong b/c Morse said he was optioned and Morse is an official voice of the Twins.

But wow, jumping a guy from High A to the majors.

What a day for Jorge Polanco.

Probably of the Bartlett type?

NONE. The DL thing was of LEN3's imagination. (Or trying to enter info too quickly).

But still haven't seen anything on Santana's injury so maybe he had that in his subconscious.

this is the first time I've been really surprised that a move. But we probably shouldn't be. Trevor plouffe and Eduardo Nunez won't be on the DL for long. probably a three day stint with the twins as a emergency Player. Especially if Danny Santana can't play. doesn't make sense to add, and subtract, someone from the 40-man roster.

Berardino says Pino "sent down." C'mon LaVelle.

Yeah, like I said, "of the Bartlett type". Just depends on whose imagination was in use- as that injury never existed either.

I can understand why this is happening given the circumstances, but can anyone recall the Twins calling a player up to debut in the bigs from single A? I can't...

Anyone want to fill us people who dont follow the minors closely on Polanco? Defensive guy? Speed guy? Who is he.

I don't know if you can access the Star Tribune but here is the TD write up on Polanco:

http://www.startribune.com/sports/twins/blogs/243693621.html#EeJIQ7tHLWFcZBrt.97

I can't find it here, though.

Here's the part on his batting:

In his first two seasons, Polanco slugged .322. In 2012, he went to Elizabethton and slugged .514, racking up 22 extra-base hits in 51 games.

In 2013, he made the move to full-season ball and enjoyed another stellar campaign at Cedar Rapids. Among qualifying second basemen in the Midwest League, Polanco was the youngest, but he ranked second in batting average (.308) and second in OPS (.813).

Polanco's offensive transformation has been truly remarkable. Four years ago he could barely hit the ball out of the infield; last year he tallied 32 doubles and 10 triples as a 19-year-old in Single-A, ranking among the top 10 in the MWL in both runs scored and RBI.

A switch-hitter who's always been known for good plate discipline and very low strikeout rates, Polanco is becoming a truly potent threat at the plate now that he's driving the ball more frequently.

Postion:

That's a good question. Polanco has split time between shortstop and second base at every level, but the majority of his recent time has come on the right side and -- considering his lack of size and arm strength -- there's almost no chance he'll play short regularly in the majors.

At second, his skills are highly lauded. But of course the Twins currently have an uncharacteristic stock of talent at that position.

I believe Kent Hrbek was called up straight from A-ball.

And for a smile (and knowing he'll probably only be with the team briefly):

Ascending one level per year would place him in the majors around 2017. Unless he flat-out dominates in Ft. Myers and/or New Britain, I think it's unlikely we'd see that timetable accelerated much.

But if he does come out raking at High-A this spring, he may join Rosario as a fast-tracked second base prospect who can drive the ball. That would put the Twins in an interesting position in a couple years, especially if Dozier doesn't falter.

Of course, who could have imagined the Twins middle infield injury train?

Assuming this is only temporary until Plouffe or Nunez come off the DL (or until Santana is deemed healthy), what impact will this have on his service time calculations going forward?

Pretty crazy. My gut says he is up for 3-4 days, then he or someone else is sent down for May or Johnson (please be May). I am guessing Polanco thought it was a joke and he was being filmed when they told him.

OK, so of the 09 international signings (Sano, Kepler and Polanco) who had Polanco reaching the majors first? Anyone? Baseball is strange.

Hope he makes it a tough decision to send him back down.

I'd settle for a tough decision to continue to justify keeping P-Flo on the 40-man.

The 40-man roster issues are legitimate in the Twins' way of thinking. They don't want to add a guy just to subtract him, and either Bernier or Romero would have the option to be FAs if they were designated after being added. I hope Polanco gets an AB, who would have thought he would be in the majors before Sano, Buxton, Rosario, Meyer and May?

It is my understanding that Nuñez will rehab in New Britain this weekend and be ready to be activated when he is eligible. I have read some other posts suggesting he won't be ready when he could be activated, but I think I'm right. If this is the case, both Polanco and Florimon will be history next Monday. Of course, that depends on whether Santana avoids the DL.

So, if Romero is not good enough to come up, why do you worry about losing him, as I've asked before.......if you won't call him up, he's not really depth.

I am utterly shocked by this move.

I think, and I could be wrong, that 1) the Twins expect one of Nunez/Plouffe to be back soon so they only needed a few days to be covered 2) Romero isn't really a MI and they wanted someone who could play short.
