  1. Translation: Using the same 2-3 guys in key spots in winnable games. Over a 162 game, 6 month season, that doesn’t work. ALL the guys have to be able to get outs in key spots reliably. No one expects 100% success, but right now they are below league average in allowing inherited runners to score. A team can’t call themselves a legitimate contender with a below average bullpen today.
  2. Gonzales is signed through next season. He isn’t going anywhere. btw, I just noticed that his contract is also front loaded. He’s making $12 mil this year and just $9 mil next year.
  3. It is a tad ridiculous to have Cron, Cruz, Schoop and Garver all not starting. I get that the Jays’ starter yesterday is tough on RHB, but the guys starting in place of those sitting other than Cave are all poor hitters against ALL pitching.
  4. The Twins have enough bullpen arms. What they lack is enough GOOD bullpen arms. Adding another AAAA reliever isn’t going to help.
  5. Expecting 7 or 8 innings out of your starter in most of your wins when the average start is barely 5 is extremely unrealistic. Gibson and Berrios had two of the best seasons for a Twins starter not named Ervin probably since Johan was in a Twins uni. They combined for 7 or more innings in just 24 of 64 of their starts. Compare that with Brad Radke and Eric Milton circa 2001 who went 7 or more in 39 of 66 starts. And both of those guys were pedestrian starters at best. It’s simply a different era. Even great starters go 7-8 innings less than half the time nowadays.
  6. Obviously they could not. Because they dropped him to add a pitcher. Also, if Sano is healthy from day one, Austin probably never makes the opening day roster.
  7. As I have said before, the LAST thing I am going to do is fault Baldelli for using a “lesser” reliever in a particular spot when I crucified Molitor for continually overusing 2-3 guys during his entire tenure. If a guy is on the team, he needs to be able to get outs, PERIOD. Put the blame on Falvine for not improving the rotation forcing Baldelli to count on Odorizzi. Put the blame on Falvine for not improving the bullpen and having to use unproven commodiities like de Jong and Vasquez.
  8. I don’t think he’s closer material, whatever that even means anymore. But I think if spotted correctly, he can be extremely effective. Particularly with guys on. He can make hitters look pretty bad. But, yes, with more exposure, his lack of “big time stuff” will be problematic. I see no reason he can’t be a Pat Neshek type. He’s still going strong at 38.
  9. I absolutely don’t agree that last year is more indicative of future results because I still maintain he was WAY overused in the first couple months last year when this team was wasting roster spots on Hughes et al. He appeared in his 24th game in team game 50 on May 29. 10 of his appearances to that point were longer than 1 IP. That is a very heavy workload, particularly for a guy who, as you mentioned, does not have a lot of MLB experience. I for one want to see what he can do when not overworked early.
  10. How is stating his CAREER IR/IS percentage cherry picking? Basing a decision solely on last year would be cherry picking IMO.
  11. Hildenberger has inherited 11 runners already this season. That’s almost half the total number of inherited runners for the entire team (25). Yesterday was the first time ANY of them scored. Hildenberger had a bad game, period. It happens. Just don’t make inaccurate statements that make him out to be worse than he is. He was very good with inherited runners in 2017, not so much last year. Overall, his career mark is 36% scoring. By way of comparison, Addison Reed has allowed 41% of inherited runners to score. Bottom line: Hildenberger is absolutely one of the key guys in the pen this year.
  12. It’s worth pointing out that a healthy and productive Miguel Sano could drop Cron to 6th (maybe even 7th if Rocco rolls with Willians 3rd) in the lineup.
  13. 4 guys isn’t enough. They can’t all pitch every night there is a lead to protect.
  14. It’s very unusual for a pitcher to throw righty and hit lefty. They are usually encouraged to not do that to protect the pitching arm.
  15. You may be right I may be crazy But it just might be a lunatic you’re lokking for...
  16. I’m pretty sure the catcher calls individual pitches. Of course, there is always a pre game meeting to discuss strategy with every hitter. That would typically be pitcher, catcher, pitching coach and the analytics guy nowadays I imagine.
  17. No doubt the Giants are trying to recover from the bloodbath that was the Pierzynski trade.
  18. Giants’ Stadium (whatever they call it) is one of the largest outfields in MLB. You HAVE to have guys that can cover ground. I’m surprised Baltimore didn’t claim him. I wonder at what point they simply bite the Chris Davis bullet.
  19. The problem, of course, is that is where successful pitchers live. Frankly, at this point in his career, Berrios has earned borderline calls. He was an all star last year. Of course, not all of those calls were necesarily for/against Berrios. That’s a graph for all Twins’ pitchers if I interpret correctly.
  20. I look at that and interpret it very differently. There were 5 pitches on or in the box called balls for the Twins compared with 2 for the Phillies. In two instances the Twins did NOT get a call at the bottom of the zone that the Phillies’ pitcher got TWICE.
  21. He’s been battling shoulder issues all spring. It’s pretty likely IMO that he will need to be rested more than would be typical for a starting shortstop.
