Twins Minor League Report (8/27): Blowouts and Pitcher's Duels
Pitz replied to Allen Post's topic in Twins Minor League Talk
The FCL Twins played a double header, with game 1 a completion of previously suspended game. Game 2 featured some notable performances: 3rd Rd pick Cade Povich pitched two scoreless innings in his pro debut. He gave up one hit and struck out three. 13th Rd pick David Fiesta also debuted with two scoreless innings also giving up one hit. He struck out two. Competitive Balance Pick Noah Miller went 2 for 4 with an inside the park home run. He scored two runs and drove in two and raised his average to .300. Undrafted signee Malik Barrington made his third appearance and surrendered his first run in pro ball. He pitched 2 innings with 3 hits, 1 walk, and 1 run. 5 of 6 outs were via strikeout. He's got a pretty impressive first 8 innings pitched in pro ball. Emmanuel Rodriguez also homered, going 1 for 3 with a walk. https://www.milb.com/gameday/fcl-twins-vs-fcl-red-sox/2021/08/27/657521#game_state=final,game_tab=box,game=657521- 10 replies

The pitches / strikes for the rookie leagues are often inaccurate. This is not the first time a pitcher has been shown to have thrown only strikes. I did notice though that Rodriguez has only given up 2 runs this season. Both those runs (and 2 of his 6 walks) came in the first inning of his debut. He's now thrown 20 straight scoreless innings.

He hasn't pitched for the Twins org in awhile, because he's been participating in the Pan Am games earning a silver medal with Canada.

Article: First-Round Flops or Unfinished Projects?
Pitz replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
We don't know what each teams board looks like though, so it's a bit tough to say it's group think. For all we know, the Twins had Jay at number 3 on their board and Buehler at like number 5. Maybe they had Gibson 10th and Trout 11th. Yes they were still wrong but they might have actually had Buehler and Trout rated quite highly. The Twins draft history that's been discussed shows terrible results, so I'm not trying to argue in their favor, but not being able to see the draft board adds some level of nuance to the evaluation and finding those "missing links" is undoubtedly quite difficult as you're projecting guys 5 years into the future. -
Article: Where Are The Twins Getting It Wrong?
Pitz replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Please forgive me if I'm wrong but haven't you said that the Twins should have tried harder to make the playoffs because anything can happen then. But somehow a Cleveland team that was 7 games better than the Twins around the deadline has no chance in the playoffs? I get that you wanted to see the team play meaningful games in September. We all did. Some people think the FO was right to pivot when things looked bleak. Some people wanted them to keep fighting and hoped things would turn around. -
Nice. Also saw a Nate Rowan tweet that Buxton is returning from the DL for Rochester. @njrowan (Sorry I don't know how to post the tweet.)

Well if he had been a top round pick, there would have been a lot of good scouting reports to back that up and his current numbers would suggest those reports were correct. Now maybe, consensus is a bit slow to change its collective mind. But baseball is also a very difficult game to project and development is no easy task. To his credit, Wells seems to have worked very hard to improve himself and given himself a better chance at success. We tend to look to rankings wanting to confirm our hopes about a player. Not sure if hope really needs confirmation.
