There is zero reason, ever, to sign a long-term deal with a player in their pre-arbitration years. They're already locked in for cheap. The only pros are that you might save some money if they don't regress or get injured., and that you build some goodwill with the player. The billionaire owners can afford spending a little more on a proven commodity and there are other ways to keep players happy. Plus, I can only assume many players who lock into these deals regret them years later when they see their market value rise. So it's no guarantee of happiness (if there is such a thing, haha). One could argue that these deals might increase strife. It's pretty common for a player to be upset when a team changes course, rebuilds, hires a new front office, etc, and then they demand a trade or drag others down with them.

Because a specialized long reliever is essentially a 6th starter, aka somebody who spends more games on the bench than on the field. It's more efficient to use the roster spot with a rotation of AAAA arms. I think the days of a Tony Fiore or whoever are gone.

Alternate take: Buxton is more valuable at DH than on the IL. My point here isn't to be contrarian. It's too say there are so, so very many variables to measure if one team is more "injury prone" than another. The data is interesting, for sure. But it doesn't tell a story. Is Paddack's (or even Maeda's) injury the Twins' fault? Is the team any worse off without Dobnak or Garlick? Do some players just have different genes that are more likely for certain injuries? Not of this is revealed in this data. It shows a comparison to other teams. It's absolutely interesting and I'm sure the FO is aware of it and trying to reduce numbers in future years. But it I find it hard to believe that it reveals the Twins are have poor conditioning or anything along those lines. (And how it the data collected? Because Maeda may be "on the IL" for 162 games, but he's only missing 35 he'd actually play in.)

Teams rarely add prospects to the 40-roster for a Sept callup. If they think he'd be a difference maker in a pennant race I could see making an exception. And while I wish him success, I personally don't see him as that type of prospect.

It's sad on the human side of the game. But if the Twins actually pull it off this year, I believe he stills gets a ring. Is he also the union rep since the Rogers trade, or did I make that up?

State of the Twins Farm System - 6 Years Into Falvey's Reign.
Shaitan commented on bean5302's blog entry in Shallow Thoughts - bean5302
While I'm well aware that a strong minor league system correlates with a strong major league team, I could care less how the minors "rank" if the major league team is winning. Prospect ratings are pure speculation. The results that matter at the the MLB level. But I also don't totally disagree with you. Of course I want the Twins to continually improve overall, majors and minors. But I don't think a side-by-side 2015-to-2022 list is a valid way to measure anything. What about the age of the roster in 2022 compared to 2016? What about long-term commitments and budget flexibility? What about the fact that there is a global pandemic that halted a year of development for most prospects? There are million variables that aren't addressed in this comparison. -

This completely ignores that running a front office requires adjustment and responding to circumstances and only looks at rosters on paper. It ignores contract commitments, roster age, and other significant variables that affect how you build a system. Of course a winning team will respond (and draft) differently than a losing team. -
Unless your name is Joe Smith. Why do they get 2 days to at Mahle to the roster? (Edit: Okay, otto answered this already.)

Assessing the Twins Trade for Tyler Mahle
Shaitan replied to Sherry Cerny's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Few players, especially pitchers, perform at a high level for 5-6 years. There's a reason (besides Pohland cheapness) that teams are reluctant to commit to long-term deals. Considering Mahle just came off the IL with a shoulder ailment, I'd like to get through this season before even considering any kind of extension. If all works out, maybe try to buy out his final year of arbitration with a 2-3 year extension.- 46 replies

Assessing the Twins Trade for Tyler Mahle

Remember when people on this board were saying the Twins should trade from their deep 6-man rotation in April? Let's not worry about next year's starting 5 yet...- 46 replies

Twins Trade for Set-up Man Michael Fulmer
Shaitan replied to John Bonnes's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Teams trade for players and let 'em go at the end of the year all the time. This trade confirms nothing about the future. -

Was Hamilton on the 40? If so, good trade. If not, still a fine depth trade. -

Week in Review: Between Rock Bottom and a Hard Place
Shaitan replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Yes it's been a rough month. But if you think this is "rock bottom" then you weren't paying attention 5 of the last 10 years. They're in first place. -
Ad three top 100 prospects and LAA might not hang up on you. After that: 1) Does Ohtani have a no trade clause? 2) Why would he promise to sign a new contract after the trade? 3) Why would he only sign for 3-5 years when he'd get more on the open market. 4) Let's not assume that all Japanese players want to play with each other. I understand the cultural issues, but it's inaccurate to assume that people will be bffs (or even friends) because they are from the same country.

Ranking the Top-5 Twins by Trade Value
Shaitan replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
An interesting stat/list, but it's only applicable to sellers, not buyers. A list of trade value for prospects would be far more relevant at the trade deadline. The only player on here who still has that title is Ryan, and the Twins are not trading a reliable MLB-ready arm at this point. Also, I'm amazed Arraez isn't even arbitration eligible yet. He seems like such a savvy vet at this point.- 29 replies
