  1. Hahah I am a big fan of the BerriosBeastMode posts on his Instagram... but I'm assuming it's more mental fatigue that physical. That being said, the fine motor control in pitching mechanics are very different muscles than he uses on his in-the-sand wind sprints with a weight vest on.
  2. Also was at the Lookouts game last night, and what a FUN game!! They got off to a hot start in the 1st and really never turned the flame down after that. My observations are certainly not new, but damn were a lot of fun to see live!! Buxton has WHEEEELS. I got a video of a couple of his extra-bases hits and watching him round the horn just makes me laugh... it's like a little Sonic the Hedgehog just burning it up. Polanco! So light on his feet, made some beautiful defensive plays last night, and if he keeps having these quality at bats... I wouldn't be surprised if he gets a phone call in the near future. Catcher Carlos Paulino. The more I see him, the more I like him. His reaction time seems much quicker than some of the AA level players I've seen in the past, and personally a catcher means nothing to me if they can call the game but lack the agility to get up and out when needed... and Paulino can do both, well. Berrrrrrrios had a great night, but like @TNTwinsFan said, could tell he was tired nearing the 6th. Non-skill-related... Berrios is just a really good guy. Super respectful, so focused, tenacity through the roof. This is cutting into my gym time but if I can figure out how to upload these videos, I'll try to get em up. In the mean time, yesterday's lineup and the $9 'Merica view that TNTwinsFan is talking about! If you've ever thought about making the trip out to Chatanoooooga, it's well worth it.
  3. Question on that... has anyone seen a stat published for average age of major league debut for internationally signed vs US drafted players?
  4. I really want to see Danny succeed at SS, but sometimes that success has to come from failure. (Insert some smart !!! comment about a phoenix and ashes...) BUT. Say they sent him down to AAA to give him a little time to work it out, would they just slot in Nuñez/Escobar or would they consider bringing someone up? Who? We've got Bernier and Diaz (pretty sure both of them have been batting 9th) at AAA and then Poloanco at AA. Just curious as to how they might shuffle the deck.
  5. All the more reason to let some of our AA infielders get in a game or two! Going to be interesting to see where this team is at (and who is on it) mid-season...
  6. To answer some of the questions about how/when a player is tested... The current JDA, which expires December 1st 2016 (along with the CBA) requires mandatory testing for all players: - on reporting to spring training, happens in conjunction with the pre-season physicals (urine sample and blood test) - at least one additional "at random" urine sample during ST On top of that, there are the random samples, both the player selected and the time they're tested being random: - 3,200 urine samples during the season - 350 samples during the off season - 260 random blood tests in season - 140 blood out of season. No limit on how many times Russian Roulette calls your number... so a player could be selected 5 times or not at all (for the random sample - everyone gets the ST testing). In terms of "innocent until proven guilty" - every player has baseline values calculated with three negative tests. HOWEVER, if someone drops a hint ("Reasonable Cause Notification") that player X is juicing, they're required to be tested within 48 hours. On the question of legit use and going to the doctor to get a prescription... /Report.
  7. Unfortunately, professional athletes aren't really afforded the luxury of that gray area... if they're going to take it, they need to know. The CBA and the Joint Drug Agreement both clearly (and extensively) lay out what what's approved ( NSF Certified for Sport Supplements ) and what's not ( MLB JDA ). That being said... I do think 80 games is a little extensive (and I'm probably biased because DAMNIT I just really wanted him to work out ). But regardless of whether the steroid induces hypertrophy or helps speed along the recovery process, it does still enhance performance and compared to those who aren't using, provides an unfair advantage. IMO.
  8. Glad the conversation seems to have gone smoothly... like Thegrin said, Pelfrey is a good guy! At the time I heard his initial response, I do have to say it made me smile a bit. None of these moves are permanent - and our five starters now might (/probably won't be) our five starters all season - so it seems a little premature to get too worked up. Looking forward to see what he can bring in the bullpen.
  9. Your opening section honestly had me on the verge of starting the slow clap from here on the couch. Spring training encapsulates everything that I look forward to from September to March, and probably the only thing that keeps me alive during Minnesota's Jan/Feb months!! This is my first year going at the end of the month, and I will say it has been nice to have so much anticipation building up to the trip!! Will you still be there this next week John? Anyone else coming this next week or there already?
  10. That's a pretty definitive projection for mid-season level of fitness. We know it's not a matter of skill, so I feel pretty confident that the kid can get the outs. Just a matter of when/where Moli will use him.
  11. Any concrete thoughts in that conversation about his plans for Escobar?
  12. I love reading these recaps!! Feels almost like I'm there. Can you tell me what the deal is with watching minor league games? I intentionally skipped Twins/Blue Jays tickets on the 24th to hopefully go watch the minor league crew. The schedule (the one I could find online at least) shows AA/AAA vs Red Sox at Jet Blue. Do I need tickets for this or can just show up? Different field than the main field?
  13. You two would make for a really fun game of phone tag. If anyone wants to hook me up with Vern or whoever we have down in the DR right now with international scouting, let em' know he has a little bilingual energizer bunny with high heat tolerance ready to jump the next plane!! I am not a scout - just have been fortunate enough to work with and watch a bunch of dedicated and hard working kids as they develop and mature, see some of them sign, and then develop and mature some mo'. Wander is two years younger than the class of kids I know the best, but just like the few I've seen sign, has that same natural flow with the ball and on the field. The bat will come. Just a PS if anyone else wants to get excited... a little bird told me the IPL will have another showcase in Florida this summer, dates to be released.
  14. I've worked with a handful of kids from the IPl, six of which have now signed (Rockies, Cubs x2, Nationals, Tigers, and Dodgers) ... but have had my eye on Javier for the last year. It's no question that he's woth an investment. Whether or now that investment is 4mil is up to debate, but it's pretty damn close to it. I have no doubt that SOMEONE will make him that offer, and I'd much rather have it be us.
  15. I really enjoyed your analysis! A couple thoughts that come to mind... Schafer. My excitement for him is roughly equivalent to what I feel when fans get excited that we put someone on base due to the opposing team's error. I know he has earned his playing time as of late, but my gut reaction is much more ambivalent. Indifferent. Unimpressed. Santana. I'll say it time and time again... let the kid play his position!! Let him be full-time SS until/unless he proves otherwise that he can't handle it, at which time try splitting time in the outfield. He can't prove his worth at short without playing there. Escobar. I like him a lot, but can't give him the job just because I like him (and his smile hahhaha). I wouldn't consider a trade until we were sold with Santana as our everyday SS, and even if then I'd much rather keep him SOMEWHERE. With Florimon gone, someone needs to hold the Best Smile in the Clubhouse title. Annnnnnnnd Mauer. Did anyone have the same reaction as I did with a 'He's not a free agent UNTIL 2019!?!?' :|
  16. I think the Twins need to commit to either a) yes we're going to develop him as a catcher and give him the playing time he needs to do it, or I like his bat better, and where else can we play his glove. Until they make that decision I don't see any reason to plan on him being Suzuki's primary backup. Same thing with Santana - it's really hard for me to envision him as our main SS when we never play him there. My ideal: with the Suzuki extension I'd like to see a Suzuki/Pinto split with Herrmann (don't shoot!) as the next backup.
