Max Kepler and the Cost of Silence
USMCTwin replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I agree and don't label it as click-bait either, but if we start valuing threads based on views or pages I think that's where you are headed. It does sow division as others have pointed out when you quote Cuomo it's equivalent to quoting Limbaugh for 'the other side'. Also some of us would like to give Kepler the benefit of the doubt rather than to inflame his character. My whole point is I don't know that this belongs in the Twins news thread, which is why I think your reaction is surprising to you, not that it's because people don't like what they see in the mirror. That seems unnecessarily inflammatory and divisive in of itself. I'll bow out. I've said my piece, it just makes me sad that even TD has become a place where lines are drawn and the other side must be evil. -

Sure, I get it's a hot topic, but is the goal division and click-bait. If so it is well within the site's right of doing so, but it's so off the norm and not something I would want to be part of going forward. -
Max Kepler and the Cost of Silence

This does seem to belong better in the off topic thread. My biggest takeaway is we lack empathy for others, especially those we disagree with. We presume the other side to be evil simply because we don't agree. Unfortunately, this article bears that out to me. At one point I was an avid reader of Aaron Gleeman (quite a ways back). He made a political post at one point we disagreed and he told me he would rather me stop reading his work than disagree. It still bothers me, but when someone tells you who they are you should believe them. I hope that isn't the way we are headed on Twins Daily since this place has been so good at bringing people together and has even been open to other views on the political threads before they became a thing of the past, until this one popped up in the Twins news thread. It's disappointing. Love each other, try to assume positive intent, and always be ready for an act of kindness instead of malice. -
Did anyone enjoy Stranger Things after first struggling to get into it? My brother constantly tries to get me to watch it. About a year ago I watched half of the first episode and stopped. Aliens just doesn't do it for me normally. He started harping on me again and so now I am through episode four. I find it tolerable, but I am certainly not hooked or even really excited. I'm hoping someone can tell me whether I should just abandon ship or keep going.

Collett has already told people after being drafted that he is for sure going to UK. I'm sure that could possibly change if we freed up enough money, but I don't see how we could allocate that much to him.- 80 replies

Article: Memorable Memorabilia
USMCTwin replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
#1 My wife and I had planned a trip to Arizona to see some of her family and it just happened to coincide with the Twins playing against the Diamondbacks so we were pretty excited to catch the series while we were there. It also just happened to be the time when Killebrew passed away. My wife and I had met him a couple of times, as autograph junkies and he was always the nicest guy in the room. We were able to go to the funeral and it amazed me to see the number of players (both active and retired) and fans that honored him. That was when I made the connection to realize that these are not just on the field heroes, but they can truly transform and impact people when you leave a legacy of caring for people the way Harmon did. #2 I was born and raised in Kentucky. We didn't really have any professional teams that dominated support. I naturally gravitated towards certain players in each sport and they became my team. For baseball it was Kirby. I truly wish I had got to meet Kirby before he passed away. The joy he played baseball with transcended the way I watched baseball and single-handedly made me a fan of the Twins. -
Stashak is off to a tremendous debut. ERA is down to 1.58 over 40 IP. SO9 sits at 10.4 with BB9 at 1.6. I hope his success continues! http://www.baseball-reference.com/minors/player.cgi?id=stasha000cod

What a strange career he has had. I know it is often referenced that other teams bring up starters and use them in the bullpen and then make a successful transition back to the rotation, but is he an example of it blowing up? It's just fascinating that he was formerly ranked #3-5ish top prospect in all of baseball and had the stats in the minors to back it up, the Yankees tried to protect him with the "Joba Rules", but for one reason or another it just hasn't clicked at all in the majors. I'm not trying to say teams/Twins shouldn't bring up starters in the bullpen, merely trying to figure out what went terribly wrong in this instance.

Actually it says we are not interested in Breslow: •Though the Twins are in the market for relief help, Mike Berardino of the St. Paul Pioneer Press reports (via Twitter) that they’re not interested in either Junichi Tazawa or Craig Breslow of the Red Sox. Berardino hears that the Twins are turned off by Tazawa’s five-plus years of service (he’ll be a free agent after 2016) and Breslow’s impending free agency. http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2015/07/pen-notes-astros-seek-impact-arm-twins-prioritizing-control-lowe-drawing-interest.html

Kepler and Gonsalves both took honors for top 10 performances in the minors yesterday. http://m.twins.mlb.com/news/article/139922256/max-kepler-stephen-gonsalves-among-10-top As an aside I am a big fan of AJ Murray. I know it's way too early to speculate, but I think he at least provides an option that could be good.

I obviously am not as involved in Meyer's process, but I would be tempted to just shut him down for the year or maybe send him where he can just work one on one with a coach daily. It feels like he is making no progress and just getting shelled each time, just going off the box scores. Of course to be fair I feel this way about 1/2 of the Twins bullpen also.

I agree, but I think/hope a lot of the non-credit decisions will change as he spends more time on the job and gets used to being a manager. -

This is from Jeremy in the draft thread: Cody had something come up in his physical. So he's currently back in class in Kentucky (from what I understand). From what I can tell, both sides would like to come to an agreement, but I would have a hard time believing he would get anywhere near $800K. If he doesn't get signed, the Twins will get pick #74 in next year's draft. Cody had something come up in his physical. So he's currently back in class in Kentucky (from what I understand). If he doesn't get signed, the Twins will get pick #74 in next year's draft. I feel like that is the hope. It sounds like there is an offer out to Cody and he'll spend the weekend mulling it over. Purely speculative, but I'm guessing it's between $400-500K. If he takes it - and it's not like he's guaranteed to get more next year - that would leave the Twins around $500K to spend. They could offer two guys $350K each. Gut feel says those guys are Wilson and Engelmann.

Is it possible we could get some of you guys who are more familiar with the draft to post your predictions on who we will sign? I know it may be a crapshoot, but was just curious to see some predictions. -

I agree with you that some teams have been better at this over an extended period of time and it isn't just the bigger market teams. I am not sure birdwatcher would disagree with that either, I took it as him speaking more to this specific instance. But, just to compare teams over the last 10 years by 90+ losses. 7 - KC, Pitt 6 - Bal 5 - Sea 4 - ChC, Hou, Miami, Minn, Wash 3 - Arizona, Cle, Col, TB 2 - Bos, CWS, SD, SF 1 - Atl, Cin, Det, LAD, NYM, Tex 0 - Mil, Phil, LAA, Oak, NYY, StL, Tor I was surprised by the lack of losing seasons from Mil & Cin.- 111 replies

I was just curious to see how this compared to the rest of the league so I did a little bit of research. For the first part I just included guys they drafted in the rotation, as you said. I only looked up the AL. NYY - 1 TB - 0 Toronto - 2 Bos - 1 Bal - 1 KC - 1 Det - 0 Cle - 0 CWS - 1 Min - 1 Hou - 2 Tex - 3 LAA - 2 Sea - 1 Oak - 1 Without Minnesota that averages out to 1.14 starting pitchers per team that were drafted. I expanded it to include international free agents signed by the original team, while not everyone has the same opportunity like a draft I still ran it that way also. NYY - 2 TB - 1 Tor - 2 Bos - 1 Bal - 2 KC - 2 Det - 0 Cle - 1 CWS - 1 Min - 1 Hou - 2 Tex - 3 LAA - 2 Sea - 3 Oak -1 Without Minnesota that averages out to 1.64 starting pitchers acquired either via the draft or international free agency. Skepticism may be warranted, but I don't think you can point to the idea that somehow they are much less effective at developing their own picks as starters than other teams. Edit: Sorry for the spacing issues. It looks normal on my screen, but doesn't format right after I post.
