Baseball’s Best Outfield Is In Minnesota
MarcF replied to Ted Schwerzler's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
And this continuous elation about having Joey Gallo in the lineup. The guy is AWFUL. A great fielder? Okay. He can't hit. Period. The Yankees tried and tried to let him break out, to no avail. The Dodgers tried and tried to let him break out, to no avail. Before them, Texas gave up, too. He cannot hit. Period. I don't care how great of a right field he plays. When a guy hits .150, .160, hey, even give him a .170, with 200 k's, he doesn't serve a spot on the roster. And $11 million? He got a raise for his complete lack of production last season? Joey should be with Sano this season, wherever that is.- 40 replies

He's an arrogant cheater to begin with. He isn't even 30 yet, and his ankle could very well lead to a much shorter career. And with reduced production caused by it. The Twins signed him again out of desperation, while better, smarter teams and organizations wouldn't touch the guy after his medical exam. Additionally, he had a very good last season and couldn't even help get the Twins to .500. He doesn't make things happen like other HOFers do. He plays solid defense and is an above average hitter. But a superstar? I think not. Since this story is incredibly premature, I'm wondering who's next on the HOF possibles list? Max Kepler? Let's stick to 2023 and see if this team can even win the division, which is once again set up to be the weakest in all of baseball. Not having Arraez is going to be far more consequential than bringing back Carlos. Bad moves.
-
If the Yanks have any 'interest' in Kepler, it'll only be if the LF situation doesn't work out in the first couple of months of the season. I think Hicks will bounce back...can't be worse, plus the Yanks have Cabrera. They'd only pickup Kepler out of sheer desperation. Montas #1? C'mon now, get real. He's inconsistent and can't stay healthy. Pegged to be the #5 starter this year, which tells you what they think of him.

Nestor Cortes? Nestor Costes isn't going anywhere As long as he's pitching anywhere near the level he did last season, he's virtually untouchable. Montas, sure. But he's too often injured, like now again, and was awful last year when he was healthy. Why pick up more mediocrity? When German pitches regularly, he is very consistent and excellent. He could be available only 'if' Montas is healthy. Yanks aren't one to trade good pitching unless they get a LOT in return. Kepler ain't a lot. More mediocrity.

Correa's Deal was Six Years in the Making
MarcF replied to Lou Hennessy's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
What I find very troubling about the CC signing is that no matter what he says, he didn't want to stay here. He preferred the Giants and the Mets, and it isn't all about the $. He wanted to play, as do all players, with a winning team. He now has his $, albeit only for 6 years (poor guy), but while he's smiling all the way to the bank, the team that he is an integral piece of really isn't championship caliber. Not even close. Thank goodness for the AL Central.- 11 replies

Best shortstop ever? Who cares? How about a winning team being the priority? Let's not forget that the Twins were six games under .500 last season, and Correa was there for almost every game. One great player doesn't make for a great lineup. Mauer (who really wasn't a game-changer) is proof of that. Thank goodness the Twins are in the AL Central. In the east or west, they still wouldn't come close to contending. For what it's worth, Cleveland is a lot better than they are being given credit for, and the White Sox have improved themselves this off-season, too. First, playing .500 ball is a necessity. Correa isn't a Judge, Trout, or Vlad Guerrero.

Jorge Polanco Has a Looming Decision
MarcF replied to Ted Schwerzler's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
The Twins 'may decide' to deal Kepler this off-season? If anyone wanted him, he would have been gone long ago. The guy can't hit. He may be a great fielder, but that doesn't make him a valuable player taking a roster spot.- 30 replies

Does Andrew McCutchen Do Anything For You?
MarcF replied to Lou Hennessy's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Absolutely yes. Great guy, a hustler who knows how to hit, though his prime is clearly behind him. He can teach younger players how to be a 'team', and how to run the bases better, and he has a super attitude. Look at it this way....he's already better than Gallo without playing one game. Given the option of Cutch as a DH or pinch hitter vs. Gallo, there is no option.- 36 replies

The threshold didn't even need to be Sonny Gray
MarcF commented on Greggory Masterson's blog entry in Brewed in the Trough
Phil Hughes? Can Joey Gallo pitch (we know that he can't hit)? Gary Sanchez can't hit or catch, but he has a strong arm, so pitching could be his saving grace. -
The front office, while not up to the quality of many others, does the best they can do with a tightwad owner controlling the purse strings. They have little or no flexibility to spend and build a winner for the long-term. They can only maneuver from year to year, and that isn't any way to run a baseball team.
-
Why would Correa want to be here? The team has done absolutely nothing to improve itself for next year, and they were 6 games under .500 with him on the team. He, like many other free agents, don't want to play for a franchise that isn't committed to at least trying to appear like they want to win. Do the Pohlads really care enough? Highly doubtful. They're too busy with their high-end car dealerships and other investments for the uber wealthy. Building a long-term winning franchise isn't part of their game.
-
Even if the Twins do end up signing Correa, they will still be far from contenders. And there will be no $ left for the very tight Pohlads to enhance the team further. The starting pitching is suspect, as is the bullpen. There are just too many holes to be filled to contend, even in the very weak AL Central.

I’m Optimistic About the Twins… That’s Why They Should’ve Signed Correa

Happy Holidays, Put Your Money Where Your Mouth Is.
MarcF commented on Alex Boxwell's blog entry in Alex Boxwell
Give him a shot. He's the Michael Vick of baseball. Just make sure that the contract says "if you behave like an *******, you will be cut", without having the rest of your contract paid off to make you go away. What have you got to lose? He can pitch more than Sonny Gray's 5 innings, and has much better stuff. -
Mets Also Have Medical Concerns about Carlos Correa
MarcF replied to John Bonnes's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Exactly. No doubt Correa would rather make $250 million with a shorter contract with the Mets, who are actually trying to buy a WS appearance, than the Twins who are many years away from even contending for a playoff series. -
Gallo isn't a winner with the shift going away. He strikes out most of the time. The shift will have little bearing on his lifetime .199 average.

Joey Gallo is a 'decent' addition? Are you kidding me? He is horrendous and a complete waste of money. In fact, you're lucky to see him foul a ball off during an at-bat. He typically whiffs, and doesn't take many pitches to earn the next K. The entire league knows to throw heat above the strike zone, and he'll go for it. And his refusal to work with the Yankees hitting coach is what got him passed off to the Dodgers. It didn't take them long to discover the same problem. His occasional homers usually come when the game has been long decided, but his K's come exactly when he needs to hit the ball. $11 million? C'mon.

If you love baseball, as I do, but are disgusted with the Twins management, or lack thereof, purchase the MLB.tv season long package. For about $120 you get EVERY MLB game for EVERY team, except the Twins since they are in the local market. It'll relieve stress, and give you far better games, and players, to watch, than what 2023 has in store. I can miss a season of Vazquez behind the plate for Sonny Gray (Mr. 5 Innings). It's your call. Wanna watch Judge, Otani, Verlander, Scherzer, and Bryce Harper, or Joey Gallo?

Clearly, the Twins have no intention of stepping back next season. Hell, they just signed Joey Gallo to an $11 million one-year contract. If that isn't a sign of dedication to the future, I don't know what is. He is a career .199 hitter (yes, .199, that's not a typo), and makes contact with the ball almost never. 163 K's last season in 350 ABs. He should be a great addition to the lineup. And fans that get to sit close to home plate are assured of a nice breeze whenever he swings. If you didn't think the Twins are desperate, just read the paragraph above. And btw, he only made $10 million last season, so the Twins spent wisely in giving him a raise for a stellar 2022.

And I should add that rather than attend Twins games, this past season I bought the MLB.tv package that gave me every game for every team, EXCEPT the Twins, for $120 for the full season. Cheaper than going to just a single game with my wife, and better baseball. I followed Judge, Pujols, Otani, and the National League, too! Now that's a deal.

Correa was a major draw for the Twins last year? Huh? Quite the contrary. He isn't the caliber of player who people pay extra to see. In fact, the Twins had their lowest non-covid year attendance since 1995 at 1.8 million. Pretty pathetic, especially considering they were in first place for a long stretch of the season. Put a competitive team on the field (a winning team would be even nicer), price your product correctly, and the fans will be there. I'll pay extra to see Judge, Otani, Houston even though I detest them, and in most years the Red Sox, but will I attend to see CC? Not a chance.
