Good point.... which is something else that drives me crazy about the Twins. We literally gave up the entire 2021 draft to get these guys, so why not go another step further and lock down Gray and Mahle for 3-4 years so that's one less issue for the Twins to worry about for half of the time Correa is here. If they were good enough to give up those prospect for then they should be good enough to lock down too.
-
I'm always confused on why everyone in here is calling for trading half the team for a SP? First, he don't have the prospect capitol to take in a true #1 SP which will also come with a high salary. Second, the last 3 years the Twins have have no less than a dozen opportunities to bring in 3-4 #1 SPs but refused to pay the price from even one. Third, trading Polanco, Kepler, and/or Arreaz will never bring back a #1 SP. At best they could bring back some RP options to fill out the bullpen. And fourth, the Twins currently have a SP rotation next season that will rival, if not pass, the 1991 rotation. 1.) Sonny Gray 2.) Tyler Mahle 3.) Joe Ryan 4.) Kenta Maeda 5.) Chris Paddock (eventually) and he have still have Jax, Winder, Varland, and etc that call fill out the 5-6 spots. The bullpen is now the biggest blackhole on this team. That's the trade market the Twins need to be swimming in right now. A stronger bullpen could easily be the difference between a 74 win season and a 90 win season.
-
Bro.... in what world would the Marlins EVER make that deal? When do the Marlins trade young emerging starts for 3rd rate aged players? Especially a SP? Max is not good and is not an asset for the Twins that would ever net a SP like Lopez in return. Best case scenario, he's involved in a partial salary dump of a quality bullpen arm.
-
Funny, I came up with a similar deal that could easily have worked for both sides... of course, this was before 12 and 13 year deals came into the mix over the last two weeks. 5/$40m ($200m) - takes him to age 32. First Opt Out option (Correa only) 2/$30m ($60m) - Takes him to age 34. Second Opt Out Option (Mutual) 2/$25m ($50m) - Takes him to age 36 Totals - 9 Years at a total of $310m, or $34.44 AAV. Two opt outs with one being just Correa's decision and the second being a mutual option. Correa is only 36 at the end of the deal if it runs it's full course. Or, he gets a $40m AAV for 5 years and can hit the FA market again at only 32 years old. And for the Twins, the contract is actually front loaded instead of back loaded allowing for more flexibility as he gets older. And if there in not a no trade clause included it's much easier to trade a 34-35 year old making $25m as opposed to $40m. In 8 years Arb players will likely be making over $25m, or at the very least, the QO will average higher than that. However, even with the issues right now with the "injury" I still don't see the Twins making any serious effort in signing Correa. I say this with confidence because no matter how Twins fans want to fawn over the supposed 10/$285m offer the Twins made, it was never going to get the job done. NEVER EVER. The Twins FO knew this beyond any reasonable doubt when they made the offer, and especially when they stuck to it with the other SS's came off the board. But, there is a small slight chance that another scenario could possibly work, but it is only a scenario where the Twins win-win on the deal. In that I mean that they will impress the fans with a big deal for Correa and if the deal goes south because of the "injury" eventually showing itself in a few years then the Twins FO can just sit back and say, "You see.... this is why we never give out large contracts... because they're going to backfire." And then they can just absorb the Correa contract and then not spend anymore money while it is still on the books. But anyway, let's all take a trip to Imaginary World and see what a shorter deal that could work would/could look like; 3/$40 ($120m) - takes him to age 30 First Opt Out Option (Mutual with a $15m/$17.5m buy out if Twins exercise) 2/$35 ($70m) - Takes him to age 32 Second Opt Out Option (Mutual with a $10m buy out if the Twins exercise) 1/$30 ($30m) - Takes him to age 33 Totals - 6/$220m ($200m guaranteed) $36.66 AAV So yea....

My fellow Twins fans are always so adorable this time of year. With that being said, I'll be the bad guy here and say the obvious part out loud. Correa is not signing with the Twins. Swanson is not signing with the Twins. The Twins already signed their free agent SS and I'm guessing most of us have already forgotten about him. So let me remind everyone of his existence - Kyle Farmer will be the opening day starting SS. Sorry guys. If you're a decades long Twins fan then deep down you already knew that... but it's always fun and exciting to dream of having a favorite team owned by a family who cared about winning and having fun over turning a $2-3 million dollar profit to stack on top of the billions they already have. But we don't have that and we never did. The Pohlads are rich for a reason, they hoard profits and generational wealth and always look to spend the bare minimums. They can never have "too much" money and will always want more and more money in their coffers. And as long as we Twins fans silently accept and allow them to do the bare minimums that's all we're ever going to get out of the Twins.

Why Can't the Twins Spend Like the Padres?
KnoblauchWasFramed replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
The made the playoffs this year and the fans seem to be pretty happy with the competitive team that the owners put on the field every night... so imma say that it worked out well. -
I can't wait to see what pitcher we take with the 5th overall pick who will, inevitably, come out of the bullpen for the Twins to pitch the 7th inning in 2025.

Carlos Correa Makes His Decision Clear
KnoblauchWasFramed replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I completely expect that Correa will get the same warm reception Berrios got when he thought he entitled to a $30M a year contract. How did that work out for him? Right now, he's at a little over half that amount. It's funny to me that last season, when Correa had a better year statistically in Runs, Hits, 2Bs, HRs, RBIs, AVG., OPS, and WAR, that literally NO ONE looked to offer him even a 5 year contract that he thinks somehow the market on him has changed as he is now one year older on a "down" year (for him based on his prior years). Good for Corey Seager that he was able to get Texas to lock him down for 10 years, but that takes one more "large market" team off of the board. And what about the other large market teams and their current SS options: Mets - Francisco Lindor at $34M Dodgers - Trea Turner is a FA, however, a 29 year old lifetime .302 hitter that approaches 200 hits is almost guaranteed to be coming back. Yankees - $150M in 2023 payroll already committed to 8 players all over 30 years old next season . That's before the Judge $35-$40M+ contract and with only one SP locked down, Gerrit Cole. SS is a need, but what about all of the other holes that need to still be filled. Phillies - No clear SS for 2023, but already at a $163M payroll for 2023 and they have 5 guys already over $20M a year. Two questions - Are they a "large market team" and would they commit to another longer term $35M contract? Padres - Nope. Red Sox - Are they in a rebuild? If they don't bring back Bogaerts for $35M a year because they are not going to compete in 2023 why would they bring in Correa? And with Trevor Story already locked down for 4 more years why not just move him back to SS if Boegaerts leaves and use that money elsewhere? Braves - This is the more logical match of all of the higher payroll teams if they let Dansby Swanson walk. But he has been there his whole career and is only 28 years old. And is Correa an upgrade? Unfortunately, for Correa I think there is na 800 pound gorilla in the room that a lot of people seem to be forgetting about when it comes to the odd fact he didn't get ANY offer better than what the Twins could give this offseason. He's a cheater. Whether or not he was the ringleader or not, it's just a fact that he was involved. And I think that clearly played a roll in the dried up market for him. And I don't see why that would change this offseason since he is a year older and his season wasn't his best. I honestly do not foresee him getting anything beyond a 5 year contract, at best. With the exception of Atlanta and maybe the Phillies, all of the larger teams are looking to be spoken for. My prediction - Boras is already feeling out all of these teams like any good agent should be doing. And he will find that teams would be looking for maybe 3 year deals and maybe not really in the $35M range he is in now. And, accordingly, he will take the 2nd year with the Twins and look to enter a MUCH more friendly SS free agent market in 2024. -

Bailey Ober tonight - 5IP / 1 H / 5 K / 70 Total Pitches Who was it that decided to pull Ober after 5 near perfect innings and go to said bullpen that blew the game. Every extra inning that Ober would have been allowed to pitch was one less inning that the bullpen got to. Ober had 4 full rehab starts and was fully capable of, at the bare minimum, pitching one more inning if not pushing into the 7th, All the way to the bitter end of this horrible season when we are in must win mode and can't afford to give away any of these 5 games and Rocco still shows he is completely overmatched and incapable of making "on the fly decisions". Rocco determined before the game even started that Ober would pitch 5 innings no matter what. No matter how good he did there was never a scenario where he would pitch the 6th. And when Ober was at only 70 pitches and was shutting down the Guardians in a must win game, Rocco was not able to make a split decision and followed The Spreadsheet and went to the bullpen and the rest his history. Just like the 70 other times he's done the same exact thing this season.

Nothing more to say about this joke called Rocco than I've seen all I've ever needed to see of him. And I'll say it for the thousandth time... THIS TEAM WILL NEVER SUCCEED WITH ROCCO AND THE SPREADSHEET. NEVER.

Well, I wonder if the fact that you named two players on the same team, with the same manager, and the same strength and conditioning coaches is just a crazy and weird coincidence? For each one of those guys there are literally hundreds and hundreds of pitchers that invalidate your argument.

"Winder only made two mistakes with two home runs surrendered but only allowed two additional hits and a walk on 67 pitches. It is not a surprise that Rocco Baldelli pulled Winder after four innings, but only two runs were surrendered on solo homers, one has to wonder why they couldn’t have let him go one more inning." The team are about to get swept by the Guardians, a team that was so clearly not trying to compete this year that they made no major free agent signings and added no players at the trade deadline. And yet here we have Rocco still trying to force his BS game plan that has failed and failed and failed over and over again. Remember the days when someone like Winder or Varland would come up for a spot start and the manager would throw him out there to eat up a game's worth of innings so that the bullpen can also get some extra rest. And sometimes that spot starter would get blown up and give up 6 runs over 6-7 innings, but it didn't really matter because they were getting sent right back down the next day. Or, in some cases they would pitch a great game and would get into the 7-8th inning and give something for the Manager and FO to think about with this prospect's future. But not Rocco - both guys come up and out perform the rest of the entire rotation and Rocco still goes to The Spreadsheet and see that it tells him that they must get pulled out of the game before the order recycles for the 3rd time IMMEDIATELY AND WITHOUT CONSIDERATION. Rocco has had his chance to show that his new-age analytics-only method was the wave of the future. And time and time again he has failed with it. He has shown that he either refuses, or worse, in incapable of putting The Spreadsheet down and watching the flow and swing of the game and then make decisions based off of that day's outcomes. And because of this, he should not be in control of this team next year.

The 2022 Twins Are Now Built For October
KnoblauchWasFramed replied to Ted Schwerzler's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
There was a typo in the headline that you missed so I went ahead and fixed it for you; The 2022 Twins Are Not Built For October Oh man, I thought I was way to old to use they Millennial code words, but after reading this article I literally had a bout of ROTFL followed by a huge fit of LMFAO. And you forgot to mention one huge road block that's continually finding new inventive ways to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory - Rocco's Spreadsheet, If short starts and piggybacking with long bullpen outings was a winning stragedy in short series, why is the Twins record only two games over .500 when they play tons of games against the Royal & Tigers & White Sox? If the Twins somehow pull off a miracle and get into the playoffs here's my prediction for Game One. Gray gets through 5 innings giving up 1 run on 3 hits with 5 Ks and 3BBs, but is at 75 pitches. Meanwhile the Twins have, as standard recent output, have a 2 run lead. What do you think Rocco is going to do? Exactly, he's going to pull Gray and go to the bullpen and within the next 2 innings the lead will be gone and the Twins will be trailing. And if the same exact scenario exists in Game Two Rocco will go ahead and do the same exact thing to Mahle or Ryan. And just that quick the Twins are 2 and done.- 41 replies

THANK YOU!!!! I have been saying this in every argument about not letting someone go through the order for the 3rd time. When you see those horrible OPS numbers presented for the 3rd time through the order the very first question anyone should ask is, "well, how many ABs do those numbers come from?" And if you've only allowed Archer, for example, 15 ABs to show what he's got how can you possibly take that OPS number seriously? That's like telling me that Arraez hypothetically needs to be pinch hit for in the 9th inning because he's only batting .100. But then you tell me that this average is for only one hit in ten ABs for the whole season.
