  1. For clarity's sake, [redacted]. The video is evidently from May of this year; see below.
  2. Yet, every journalistic prognosticator predicated that a Top 10 team would draft him... It's not just the Twins who disagree with your assessment, I think it's everyone in the industry.
  3. Jay was consistently projected into the Top 10/Top 5 by nearly all publications, so the notion that most see him--or even some see him as a only reliever--is just false.
  4. Has there been any question from actual scouts about his capacity to start? I certainly haven't heard any.
  5. It all depends on the unstated reasons for his lack of promotion, doesn't it? If those aspects of his 'game' haven't been substantively addressed--even in spite of his recent AAA success--then it wouldn't do Hicks or the Twins good to promote him. That said, I hope he's up soon enough. Let's hope he can count the outs when he's here.
  6. There's a time and place to teach players lessons on attitude and discipline; I'm thinking benching during the playoffs isn't one of them.
  7. A Span like extension makes a lot of sense. Part of why Span netted a prospect like Meyer was because his affordability was locked in over several seasons. Even if 2014 establishes Dozier's ceiling, he's still likely a trade asset if the contract follows Span's.
  8. Phil Hughes ‏@PJHughes45 16m16 minutes ago So pumped to call Minnesota home for the next 5 years! Thank you to the @Twins organization and fans for all the support! #TwinsTerritory
  9. So anything short of spending 150 million is disrespecting the fans? Exactly one team has spent that kind of money this offseason; a lot of unhappy baseball fans out there. And 55 million dollar smoke screen? They already had ten-million dollar smoke screen in Hunter...
  10. Heh. Torii has an attitude? Who knew? That's probably why the Twins brought him in.
  11. I'm not sure where you are really getting this. He's media darling, a spotlight whore, but I can't extrapolate his behavior in front of camera to an assessment of his leadership/mentorship ability or his contribution to a positive culture at the workplace. Again, I'm not sure leadership is the right word; but that fieriness that led Hunter to swing at Morneau (another fiery personality) certainly is something the clubhouse had missed; that kind of player-on-player accountability, even if wrongheaded, matters. Professionalism isn't the issue; there's plenty of lead-by-example guys. I just think a guy like Hicks, and other young guys, might benefit from Hunter's attitude, even if Hunter may not pick all the right fights or present the most sound ideas.
  12. Culture matters in all organizations that have people working closely together. Whether you want to call that leadership or not, I'm not sure; but it's clear Hunter will bring a strong personality to clubhouse. And it's also pretty clear he's invested. That some here would impugn Hunter's character because they dislike his personality and antics, seems pretty extreme given that our only access to him is through the media, as opposed to instances when leadership might actually matter. If Torii really is a jerk; and the Twins executives really are empty-headed sentimentalists, why come to Minnesota? There are reports that Texas offered more and clearly present a better chance to win. Why come to Minnesota? So he can bilk Minnesota fans who unwittingly adore him? Because losing isn't bad if you're well-liked? The answers to these questions seem awfully cynical and specious, if we discount the reasons Hunter actually says he came here.
  13. What can I say, I'm sentimental. For my part, I like what this says about the Twins as an organization (in so far as a worthwhile place to work). It's hard to imagine that a contender wouldn't match what the Twins offered. It's cool Torii wanted to come back, probably when he didn't have to, and he will have few, if any more opportunities to compete. While I'd prefer to watch meaningful baseball in 2015, the notion was always only at the edge of realism. If 2015 is about development, I don't see why Hunter doesn't make sense. Sure, he showboats, but from what I know about the player is that he's passionate (Morneau-swing/Punto hit, etc.) and has faced real-life adversity (his father). Again, this is sentimental, but this deal is as much about Hicks, Rosario, Buxton and the others as it is Hunter's actual production and liability.
  14. Good take; I've always considered this as well. They reversed Oakland's supposed thinking, believing that BB/9 was more obtainable/teachable than BB% (OBA - AVG). But that thinking just gets you subpar pitchers that stop living up to their measurables as they begin to face elite talent.
  15. 1) The Twins aren't even interested in Maddon! 2) If the Twins are interested in Maddon, Maddon probably has NO interest in the Twins! 3) If the Twins are interested in Maddon, it's only to pacify the fan base. 4) If Maddon is interested in the Twins, it's only because he wants to drive up his own price. (What with those high-spending Twins!) Some fans' cynicism knows no bounds. While I find it unlikely the Twins will sign Maddon, it's cheap speculation to question the sincerity of either party. Both could really wish to form a relationship, and it not work out without incompetence or insincerity being part of the reason why.
  16. I just saw the press conference (via strib) and I found it striking that Gardy was there for his own firing. Honestly, he acted classy, and I feel oddly proud. Even TR with all his uppity shrwed stubborness got vulnerable calling Gardy a brother, admitting so how obviously this was the most difficult decision of his baseball career. Yeah, I feel oddly kinda proud--yes, undeserved and stupid, but it's difficult to not root for these people.
  17. Wow. The opportunity was there with Gardehire's retirement vesting (do I have that right?), the possible in-house replacements (as Steiny's name is already being mentioned for other jobs), and the radical roster change over the past year (and the following one). As much as players liked playing for him, too often the team has been unwatchable in each of the last four season's second halves. The August and September swoon were a stale staple of Gardenhire's recent teams. That Gardenhire didn't make losing unpleasant was probably part of the cultural problem. Best of luck to Gardenhire, whom I hope the Twins retain in some Spring Training Specialist /token job kind of way, where Gardy can just meander around and praise everyone for battling their tails off, without doing in long-lasting psychological damage.
  18. If people are willing to blame the media for meddling in the private lives of professional athletes, they can certainly blame that same media as well as the coaches and managers and family members who insulate (and empower) such athletes to the point where they think such violent domestic relationships are legal much less appropriate. Violence is never appropriate in any domestic relationship, and often is illegal; please let's have more public exposure of people who privately believe otherwise.
  19. Thanks for the read. Add the minor league depth that Polanco, (and yes) Michaels and Goodrum (the latter two both rule-5 eligible) and the eventuality of first rounder Nick Gordon, the Twins' have options for short in the near and far future. Though troubling, none lead with their defense. Each prospects' warts seems to be in a similar place: defense (even if different aspects).
  20. Great job, Brock. I'm sure you're proud. The site looks professional and distinct. It's clear the design is organic and not some pre-fab grab bag crap. I really like the static banner at the top, it's functional and frames the site nicely. The site's aesthetic is consistent and effective, not overbearing; the thought and effort that went into its design is clear. Congratulations. I do have some questions about tailoring the experience. How can I adjust things like posts-per-page? I guess that's one question. I know, you guys want me to click, but I want to limit my clicks...
