Notebook: Arraez to LF?
drivlikejehu replied to Jamie Cameron's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Except Kirilloff's agent doesn't go for deals like those. Even if you advocated that the Twins hire a hitman to take care of Boras, the mere fact that Kirilloff hired him indicates that he's not looking for that kind of contract. So, no dice, sorry. -
Sure. I wasn't responding to that, I was responding to your comment about Syndergaard. But even with the trades that did really happen, fans engage in extreme hindsight bias, along the lines of why did 19 clubs or whatever pass on drafting Trout. So while it's potentially a legitimate area of discussion, it doesn't cut it to just say "Gerrit Cole" as a knock on the front office without context. You can play that game with all 30 clubs.

This is some big-time goal-post moving on the Maeda deal. The concern with giving up Graterol was that he'd turn into a #1 or #2 starter, not that he'd be a solid 7th inning reliever. The Syndergaard thing never made sense, no MLB club would have made that deal. There's a reason he's still with the Mets. It's one thing to say the Twins should have traded for someone that, you know, actually got traded. This is something else entirely, and not at all a legitimate line of criticism.

Notebook: Arraez to LF?
drivlikejehu replied to Jamie Cameron's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
In some areas. In something as basic as this, no, they don't. Given the same incentives, the ancient Greeks would have made the exact same decision to start prospects in AAA that MLB clubs do in 2021. It's simple, inarguable logic. And, even if the topic was something where ideas could change, the chances that a random fan is smarter than all 30 clubs is very, very low. So low that the idea should be disregarded unless backed up by a very detailed and well-supported argument (i.e., the exact opposite of making a baseless claim without any support whatsoever, as you did). -
I do think it's pretty "controversial," insofar as every statement in that paragraph is either factually wrong or highly embellished. And just the general tenor of your comments is completely out of touch with reality in every possible way . . . from what's reasonable to expect from the minors, what amount of depth clubs have, how easy it apparently should be to acquire elite starting pitching with a mid-level payroll . . . the bottom line is that your take cannot be rationally justified. It's just an example of complaining for the sake (and enjoyment of) complaining.

Is that article about which teams have the best rotation, or the best #1 starter? Because the issue was clearly the latter. Who on the A's staff is clearly better than Maeda? Who on the Blue Jays staff is clearly better?

The Twins 3 Most Underrated Players

This is clearly not correct - Larnach's "floor" is to never even make the big leagues. -
Twins Daily 2021 Top Prospects: #8 Aaron Sabato
drivlikejehu replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Minor League Talk
If some of them won't turn out to be very good, then it's all the more important to have numbers. You can't have it both ways - there is either a logjam, or there isn't. If some of them aren't very good, there isn't. If they all are good, there is, and good players (including 'corner' players) have trade value. A number of the highest-paid players in the game play in the corners. The idea that teams only want to trade for pitchers isn't true either. That's an outlandish claim with no basis in fact. -
Twins Daily 2021 Top Prospects: #8 Aaron Sabato
drivlikejehu replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Minor League Talk
Almost all prospects are "boom or bust," since most never do anything in the Majors, and the majority that do play in the bigs are role players that don't have a huge impact (basically saving a few million dollars compared to the club signing a low-tier free agent). If all those guys turn into quality big leaguers, the Twins will be in great shape . . . keep 3 and trade 2 for areas of need. -
Twins to Sign Andrelton Simmons
drivlikejehu replied to Tom Froemming's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Arraez will play a lot. He should always be penciled in against righties, and would still play as needed against lefties. He's basically still a starter for all intents and purposes. -
Twins to Sign Andrelton Simmons
drivlikejehu replied to Tom Froemming's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
When healthy, the Twins infield defense will be . . . very good. That could give them an angle to work on the pitching front. For instance, Jake Arrieta and Brett Anderson are both groundball pitchers . . . could be inexpensive targets to add rotation depth. Unless the Twins have given up on signing Cruz, this would also seem to indicate their payroll won't be cut as much as feared. -
I'm a big Kirilloff fan. But, Lewis is 2 years younger and has equal or superior raw power, along with vastly superior speed and general athleticism. He's had flashes of success (e.g., 2019 AFL, 2018 Cedar Rapids) despite his swing issues. Kirilloff does have a high-upside scenario, where he becomes an elite hitter. But I'm not sure how much more likely that is than Lewis figuring things out . . .

Report: Twins To Sign LHP J.A. Happ
drivlikejehu replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
The salary isn't excessive - in a vacuum. My concern is that the Twins are financially limited and shouldn't be committing so much money to a 'depth' signing. This would seem to preclude the Twins from really improving this off-season - they have money remaining to sign Cruz OR one of the shortstops, but probably not both. I'm not going to declare the off-season a failure because maybe they will spend more than expected, or maybe they will pull of a significant trade or two. But after having been unconcerned as of last week, I'm now pretty worried. -
I think 8 of Fangraphs' top 25 free agents have signed. Some trades have happened but others are still out there. I don't see a lot of justification for angst at this stage. You don't get extra credit for acting earlier in the off-season. And let's be real, we knew all along that the Twins would wait out the market some before really getting involved.

What any team needs to win championships is impact players. The Twins have the added challenge that, as a mid-market club, they need some (really most) of those impact players to be cheap. Players like Rooker do not change the Twins' outlook. If they want a 1B/DH that can hit lefties, that's something they can find easily via trade or free agency, at a low cost. The surplus value isn't there and the contribution to being a championship team isn't there. So his inclusion on the list makes no sense. Cavaco is a high-risk prospect, no doubt (that was clear even when he was selected). But he has a *chance* to be the kind of impact player that helps build a championship club, and has future value for that reason.

Why Non-Tendering Matt Wisler Made Sense
drivlikejehu replied to Matthew Trueblood's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I'm aware of the definition . . . the word is almost never used that way colloquially. But I'm glad you agree with the general point. -
Why Non-Tendering Matt Wisler Made Sense
drivlikejehu replied to Matthew Trueblood's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Considering the performance of the organization under Falvey, I'm not sure that he needs much "apologizing" on his behalf. -
Why Non-Tendering Matt Wisler Made Sense
drivlikejehu replied to Matthew Trueblood's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Did you have a better baseball career than Falvey? Just curious. I guess to avoid being a "nerd," Falvey should intentionally make incorrect decisions, to show that he's above concepts like "due diligence" and "logic"? -
Twins Extension Candidate: Byron Buxton
drivlikejehu replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I don't see how you can evaluate a potential extension without considering what the terms would be. There are always pros and cons, whether it makes sense depends on the dollars. -
Is the Time Right to Trade Byron Buxton?
drivlikejehu replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Well the Twins might get something (i.e., draft pick), depending on what happens with the next CBA. There's no actual reason the Twins have to trade Buxton even if he's ultimately going to walk. The Twins are trying to win, and Buxton helps them win. Worst case, they can replace him with either a prospect or a less expensive free agent in 2023. There's (hopefully) a lot of baseball to be played before then. -
Is the Time Right to Trade Byron Buxton?
drivlikejehu replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I guess what doesn't make sense to me is this - how can you talk about trading Buxton without even mentioning what the Twins would be looking for in return? I assume you don't mean prospects, this would be the most unimaginably stupid time to go into rebuilding mode . . . zero percent chance that happens. So now we're down to trading Buxton for some other MLB position. And what exactly would that be? Utility player? DH? It would be nonsensical to trade Buxton for another position player. So that leaves pitchers. So what are we expecting for 2 years of an inconsistent player who can't stay healthy? A #3 starter? After the Twins weakness all season was their offense? That makes no sense either. I just can't picture the realistic return that would justify trading Buxton. -
Replacing Luis Arraez at Second Base
drivlikejehu replied to Matthew Lenz's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Blankenhorn may have potential as a super utility guy, but he had a .312 OBP last year in AA despite a good BABIP. Marwin had a rough stretch, to be sure, but his peripherals aren't bad . . . the main culprit seems to be his BABIP of .236 (compared to .306 for his career). His statcast numbers are basically in line with his previous track record as well. Gonzalez does look slower and less athletic, not overly surprising for a 31 year-old, but I suspect his 'true talent' level for hitting is still better than any of the realistic alternatives. -
It's interesting. Maeda's improvement seems to be mostly the result of throwing more sliders, which is getting him more ground balls and increasing the rate of hitters chasing outside the zone. Increase in breaking ball usage is a much-discussed MLB-wide trend the past few years, but Maeda seems to be benefitting more than most despite the fact he already threw a ton of off-speed pitches. On the flip side though, it's hard to see how those relatively minor changes in Maeda's pitch mix would sustainably elevate him all the way from a good #3 starter to a #1. That would be an unfair expectation driven by Twins' fans thirst for a true ace.

If every potential act of injustice (the recriminations typically begin before most of the facts are even established) causes pro sports to cancel its games, then pro sports no longer can exist. In a country the size of the US, even if every "reform" in the book is passed, you would be able to find a case of potential injustice every day without too much trouble, usually worse than the situation that caused this round of cancellations. Or is the policy to only protest when something has already gone viral?
