Twins Daily 2020 Top Prospects: #6 Jhoan Duran
Dr. Beanpole replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Seems like a promising guy and somewhat of a steal for Escobar on an expiring deal. Sounds like the best thing we can all hope for is something like 85% of Noah Syndergaard without the injury issues (hopefully). That's probably a future 2nd guy on a good team and an ace on a bad team. Hope he can achieve his potential! Excited to have some heat being brought up soon.- 23 replies

I would want Chris Archer, I just don't want to give up anything to get him. He's a decent enough 3/4 in the rotation the Twins currently have, but not if the Pirates randomly want a haul for him. And seeing how he's one of the better available options right now, they probably aren't going to dump him for nothing. I like the names you threw out there though, there's a real possibility most of those guys are available and if the rotation proves to be a problem around the all star break I'd bet they won't hesitate to make a move to better the staff. Also wouldn't be surprised if they stand pat, especially if they're getting good outings from Pineda and Bailey and the young guys show some promise. There's enough depth there if Smeltzer, Dobnak, and Thorpe all pitch similar to last year and Graterol eventually joins them as a rotation piece.

Exactly. By my count, there's only 6-7 teams that are openly tanking for 2020 already: Detroit, KC, Pittsburgh, Baltimore, Miami, San Francisco, and maybe Seattle. Potential to throw in Colorado if they deal Arenado. I don't really know what arms you want to target on those teams, but the odds are either that they're not cheap, or they're not very good. Might as well wait until more teams enter the market and see if you can pick a crafty veteran guy that you like, especially assuming the scouting department has probably already looked at this info and determined there's really no upside to dealing with any of these teams for the available arms they have and what it would take to acquire.

It's not really that the cost will be more palatable at the deadline, there just might be more options available. If the Cubs aren't able to keep up with the suddenly-threatening Reds, the Cards, and the Brewers, they might be willing to ditch Lester or Hendricks or something. As of now, those guys are pretty much off the board, they're not interested in trading them. If the Twins wait until the deadline to acquire another arm, they're just hoping there's a better option out there. Robbie Ray might not even be available in a trade right now with the move the Diamondbacks made yesterday. I don't even know who they could go make a play for at this point, too many teams think they're competitive.

Alright, let's go down this road: If swinging 3-0 is unsportsmanlike, then both the Twins and Rangers are accepting the fact that the game is secured for the Twins. So should the pitcher just lob balls into the zone? If the Rangers get a few runs back in the 9th and load the bases up, should they just stop swinging? The game was already decided for the Twins, so it's not fair that the Rangers win it after that. Should the game be played after that altogether? This isn't a timed game. Each team gets the opportunity to make 27 outs if they need it. The Rangers had only made 24 at that time. Unless Hunter Pence, the tying run in the 9th, would have let his bat rest on his shoulder and looked at strike 3, miss me with this "unwritten rule".

It's not that they don't know. They're not just going to give their best prospects away to say they made a move at the deadline. Unless the asking prices go down on some of these middle-top options, expect the Twins to only make one middle-relief move and call it good for now. I saw that Detroit tried to get Gleyber Torres back for Matthew Boyd. Yeah that's not going to happen, and if that's any indication on the asking price for some of these guys then I wouldn't be shocked if the Twins don't pick up much today.

This is the main problem and probably the reason why the Twins have yet to make a move other than Sergio Romo. If "making a move" for them means giving up 2 of Royce Lewis, AK, Graterol, and Larnach and getting a middle reliever in return, that's not a move the Twins should make. Go add pieces at the deadline, but don't get fleeced while doing it. If everyone is going to be clinically insane with their asking prices, there's not much Falvey can do.

My wish: Take some kind of a lead into August. Even if we're up by 0.5 games on Cleveland, just take a lead into August. The schedule clears up quite a bit at the back end of the schedule, and that starts tonight. Take care of business against Chicago and Miami and we should be looking good for the stretch. That, and please get some pitching soon.

Article: Series Preview: Messing with the Mets
Dr. Beanpole replied to Ted Schwerzler's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Yup, this is the thing. The schedule is pretty tough through the end of July, and then in August and September it gets noticeably easier. If they can at least play .500 ball until the trade deadline, they should get to 100 wins and an AL Central title relatively easy. Just have to avoid a massive skid right now and it should be pretty smooth sailing until the playoffs.- 12 replies

Article: Week in Review: Next Man Up
Dr. Beanpole replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
The interesting part of this is that the Twins are in their toughest 2 month stretch in the entire season. If they overshoot their needs because they're underperforming in June and July, they should dominate August and September with a reinforced rotation and bullpen. I'm happy this is the stretch where the Twins have a bunch of tough opponents in a row, hopefully it'll convince them to acquire some real pitching talent that can help them win now. -
No way Washington accepts that offer for Scherzer. I understand he's getting paid a lot, but he's actually worth what he gets paid. There's a difference between the Nats moving Scherzer and the Cubs trying to move Darvish. They're both making a lot of money, but one of them is actually worth the contract. Scherzer would easily cost Royce, Graterol, and throw a dart for the other top-10 prospect we're throwing in. That being said, if they could find a way to fleece Washington and get Scherzer cheaper than that, that would be amazing.

With Cave off to a slow start and the fact that he's still got options left, he's got to be the guy that gets sent down. Maybe if he can get hot with some real playing time in AAA he can come back and be productive, but right now he's the most likely guy to go I think.

Does anyone else get a "Pat Neshek" vibe from Harper? It doesn't look crazy impressive watching him pitch, but inducing weak contact is still an effective way to pitch. I think he could be a decent bullpen guy for a long time to come if he continues to improve on what makes him effective now. Maybe a 6th/7th inning guy. Not amazing, but useful.

Article: Twins 2019 Position Analysis: Third Base
Dr. Beanpole replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Yeah the 3B depth is likely entirely a non-issue as it'll get filled by whichever SS prospect is hitting well and needs a spot to play. Gordon could definitely move to 3B and probably be terrific at it. This is exactly why too many SS is not a bad thing. They'll find places to play if their bat needs to be in the lineup. -
Nothing wrong with this for Gordon. If he and Royce can both play in the MLB at the same time and Polanco is still good, you find space for them. Polanco or Gordon can go play 3rd, Sano is probably moving to 1B at some point anyways, and you're good. Never too many good SS or CFs on your team. If they're all hitting, you find room for them.

Article: Projecting the 2022 Lineup
Dr. Beanpole replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Why am I seeing more lineups with Kepler at 1B over Kiriloff/Larnach? Kepler is clearly going to be the best fielder of the 3, why do we all think he won't stick at RF? Just because he's the only one of the 3 with any experience at 1B? -
Article: What's There to Say About Ehire?
Dr. Beanpole replied to Tom Froemming's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
He's a decent player, and I hope this year he gets a reasonable amount of playing time. Not because I want to see more of him playing, but I want Rocco to actually spell everyone now and then to keep them fresh rather than running them into the ground by late June. Give Adrianza 250 PA this year at a variety of positions except 1B, C, and CF, and I'll be happy. Perfect guy to keep around so that a guy like Dozier (or now Sano/Polanco) doesn't play through an injury all year. Looking forward to a manager that uses his bench a little more. -
Article: What To Do With Logan Forsythe?
Dr. Beanpole replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I would be fine bringing him back on a 1-2 year deal as a spot starter/utility guy, assuming they can't get Escobar back. Seems like a good guy who won't lose you games when he has to play, and when they replace him in the lineup he should have trade value at that time. Let him hold down the fort at 2B if you can't get anyone else to take the job this offseason.- 100 replies
