  1. Per bighat "Time to clean house. I think Gene Glynn would be a nice interim manager for the rest of the season." I don't know who Gene Glynn is but one more time...if Molitor remains as manager, that says all you need to know about the goals of the franchise. Those goals would not include winning baseball games. Even if firing a manager is only symbolic, it is a big part of big time (not just pro) sports and is a statement to players and fans that ownership is not happy. Not firing a manager like Molitor simply says, "What, us worry?"
  2. "Perhaps most perturbingly, he has drawn only one walk in 34 plate appearances after exhibiting such a keen eye in the early going." Nick posting about Mauer. My guess is that opposing pitchers have been told to avoid walking Joe under penalty of demotion to T ball. Make him hit his way on and of all the players in MLB pitch to contact when Joe Mauer is at the plate.
  3. 3-3 home stand in the opposite way that it should have happened. They better enjoy the off day today because, if I read the schedule right, they have 20 straight games without a day off starting tomorrow. 8-12 anyone?
  4. A sweep would have been fun but 2 of 3 ain't bad. Just win the Rangers series and all is well (with this home stand anyway). As far as Molitor and overall team ownership/management are concerned, there is probably a motto on the wall in all of their offices; "Go with the flow". They all have great jobs running a team with no expectations. Why worry?
  5. As far as slugging v obp is concerned, all I know is that the players carry a bat to the plate for a reason and if a hitter's goal is to do anything other than drive a baseball somewhere with some authority that hitter has the wrong mind set in most cases. If they can do that and be selective at the same time, so much the better.
  6. Even in Lynn's poor early starts he wasn't being hit hard. He should just target the middle of the plate and let the ball do the work. Absolutely no reason not to win today and keep the broom moving when the Rangers get to town. 4 of 6 is always a nice pace but 5 of 6 or even better on this home stand is doable. As an aside, pitching, always a huge part of the game obviously, is everything right now. Its to point where the stat heads are saying that batting average is no longer important. Bryce Harper is at .213. Sanchez, Yankees catcher, below .200. Its pitching and the long ball period.
  7. So the very unpredictable way this season is shaping up continues. Last years all-star in A ball. This years all-star essentially his full time replacement. Thank goodness Berrios has rebounded from a couple of shaky starts earlier and Lynn is coming around. Just take the field expecting to win and go out and play baseball. (I know not very analytical. Will leave that to the pros. I just enjoy "talking" about the Twins).
  8. Reply to curt1965 who posted ...."I think his conclusion that Molitor bears some degree of criticism for the Twins play this season, or maybe he doesn’t, is spot on. There is something missing from this team...." So no conclusion is spot on? As often is the case there is way too much analysis or lack thereof in this whole thread. The conclusive answer to the thread title is NO. The biggest single individual on any big time sports team is the coach/manager. With all of the injuries and turnover the glue and the game to game attitude has to come from the coach/manager. Molitor provides neither.
  9. My only point was that with the exception of those 4 teams mentioned every other team in MLB is in about the same condition as the Minnesota Twins. If they keep beating Cleveland they could actually win the Central but I was just trying to say that a whole bunch of teams are scratching and clawing around the .500 mark. Who would think that at this point of the season Buxton and Santana would be on the DL and Sano would be in A ball and the team batting average is in the .230s and the Twins are far from out of it.
  10. Nothing makes any sense. 5-2 against Cleveland which I thought would be a defining 7 games so should be great. Unfortunately, 9 games under against everybody else. 3-3 road trip....ok. Do it by losing the Detroit series and winning the Cleveland series? Go figure. So now they will probably take 2 of 3 against the Red Sox and lose 2 of 3 against the Rangers. As stated in this thread, the Twins are hanging by a thread thanks to the "supporting cast" and getting absolutely no help from the so called stars. Good news is that other than Seattle, Houston, NY and Boston everyone else is kind of floundering around .500 or worse.
  11. Send Sano to Tee Ball; makes no difference. Until and unless the Twins fire Molitor, I am convinced that this franchise has no real desire to win for what reason I have no idea.
  12. 10 hits combined in 2 losses to the Tigers. Take out Adrianza's slam in game one and what have you got? Maybe they will sweep the Indians. Maybe not. Where in the Sam Hill is Miguel Sano? Does he need to rest every 2 games? Please don't say he can't play against right handed pitching. Are they afraid his average will slip below the Mendoza line? Molitor has to go as the only option.
  13. Responses to a couple of posts on thread: No point in nit picking Molitor's individual game decisions. He is not a good manager period and needs to go/should be gone. The fact that the Twins show no consistency in any category including season win - loss records speaks for itself. I am convinced that being manager of the Minnesota Twins is the best job in professional sports because there is no pressure to win and the job is yours as long as you want it. Twins fielded a team with a .234 batting average and Molitor expected more offense? Speaks for itself. Dozier may get hot but hos approach is always the same. Home run or nothing and game situation means absolutely nothing as the posted late game stats reveal. If the Twins win today they can still have a 3-3 road trip by only winning 1 in Cleveland which is ok. As long as they can hang around the .500 mark into the all star break the season is salvageable. Getting Polanco back and hopefully Santana in some decent form will make a difference.
  14. Due to equally mediocre competition (a key component of wins and losses believe it or not) the Twins will continue to win games but in a very unreliable and unpredictable manner . Taking 3 of 4 against the Indians after falling behind 9-0 in game one is a classic example. Then what happens? Split with the lowly White Sox and losing a home series against the Angels. Rosario, Escobar a rookie pitcher and at least decent overall pitching have kept them in the "fair to middl'n" category so far. Mauer, Buxton, Sano, Santana, Polanco non factors for various reasons. Twins will continue to flounder around the .500 mark because they cannot sustain any long winning streaks. How they do it will be the interesting part. Upcoming road trip against Detroit and Cleveland 3-3 is realistic best that can be expected. Red Sox and Cubs on the horizon. .500 ball would be nice.
  15. Truly amazing that Twins lose 3 straight, fall behind 9-0 against Indians in game 1 and the entire season was looking very bleak. So what happens? They almost come back and win that game and then proceed to win the next 3 against the first place team. The easiest million ever made would have been to lay down 100 bucks on that happening at 10000-1 odds. Rosario and Escobar did their jobs plus some as team offensive leaders and Lynn's ability to hang in there was possibly the key looking ahead. No way to begin to predict what will happen next but tomorrow's double header will hopefully get them started back to the .500 mark.
  16. Injury is always part of sports but it seems that this year the disabled list update occupies a larger segment of MLB headlines. I think it is fair to say that durability and ability to play through injury is part of the total package of being an athlete. If Joe Mauer really got a concussion from diving for a foul ball, he should never set foot on the field again. In today's game, Mickey Mantle would probably have stayed on the DL from the time he ran over that sprinkler head in center field. Buxton's .115 average is probably what sent him back on the DL; not his toe. Still concerned about Sano but I hope he is able to finish the season out injury free and see what numbers he can pile up. That opposite field shot was an amazing thing to see and MLB Net had a great view of it.
  17. Seems like the Twins "player development" has a real knack for failure to develop young players and even having them regress when they get to the big time. Romero got the benefit of a lot of close calls in his first start and if the poster is saying that he couldn't overcome 1 call against him on the first pitch that is a bigger stretch than Randy Johnson's. I said after Romero's first start that time would tell; not his natural ability. As soon as the 7 games by mid June are over (Twins maybe 2-5 in those games) send Molitor packing. Baseball technicians do not make good managers. He seems to have the personality of a rock. Probably a good guy and a great player himself but not a manager. Being out managed by Gardenhire speaks for itself.
  18. Missing in this whole discussion is a person by the name of Paul Molitor. He might as well fill out the lineup card and then buy a ticket. No effort whatsoever in the "manufacture a run" category? Rodney ONLY pitches in closing situations but never in extra inning games on the road when those 8 walk offs could at least be postponed (maybe)? Barring a miracle turn around, Molitor needs to go by all star time if the Twins are serious. Mauer's return will be of no consequence. What's the point of Joe "the table setter" Mauer maybe getting on base a couple of times if the plate isn't touched? Polanco's return will be much more valuable than Mauer's and expecting Joe to come through against the Indians is wishful thinking. Buxton and Sano are the keys to this team. Buxton needs to get on base some way some how and Sano needs to hit at least .280. The home runs will come. Sorry about the negativity and hyperbole.
  19. What hyperbole? I said "worst collections... I have ever seen." Still is and I bet the 9 teams you site (how long did it take to dig that up?) don't start a team with lower averages. What negativity? Simply said they need to win this KC series and that by mid June we will know a lot about this team. Rah ra sis boom bah gets you no where. If realism sounds negative then draw your own conclusions.
  20. Win was nice but a sweep would be nicer and must at least split the next 2. Guess who is next? Still one of the worst collections of batting averages I have ever seen in a starting lineup for any team at any level. Was Sano's homer the blind squirrel rule or the beginning of a hot streak? The 3 run single by Rosario was a combination of a terrible 0-2 pitch and lapse on defense by the Royals. Can't read much into that. By mid June the prospects for this season should be pretty well defined.
  21. Other than size, I don't know what the comparison between Carter and Sano is all about. Carter was available at a nominal price in today's bloated market so the Twins grabbed him. End of story. Sano, in my opinion is injury prone period. His supporting structure can't support his bulk over extended periods of time and it will give out again. What is my evidence for this opinion? Simple observation. The man looks like an accident waiting to happen especially running the bases. His one talent is that when (if) the ball runs into his bat it travels in the opposite direction very far. He does seem to be athletic which is good news/bad news since that is where the stress comes from.
  22. All of this analysis is pointless. Twins will hang around the .500 mark and will be competitive with most of the rest of MLB which is mediocre just like the Twins are. Just enjoy the Tigers series for what it is; a team with the Twins' prior manager 1 game behind them in the standings. Buxton and Sano will not have long careers . They will both remain injury prone and will never be so called professional hitters. Dozier will never be a situational hitter and treats every ab the same. He hits more home runs than his position warrants because that is all he thinks about. Mauer is done whether he plays or not. Twins will hang around the central simply because they are able to field a decent enough team for a weak division no matter who they send out there and as long as pitching remains at least average which it is now. The 7 games against the Indians from end May to mid June will tell the story whether they have a shot at the Central or not. No more complicated than that.
  23. Simple answer to thread question. Either worse pitching by the opposition or different players. Why anyone would throw Mauer an off speed pitch is beyond me but they do so he still looks decent on paper. Right now Rosario is the only dangerous situation; repeat; situation hitter in the whole lineup. I think Kepler hopefully is in a normal slump and will still finish ok but is not a top of the order hitter. Neither is anyone they have in the top 5 of the order except Rosario. What we have is a bunch of 6-9 hitters. Ironically pitching and not great offense by the opposition either is going to have to carry the Twins. That plus the AL Central. Just score enough to play n.500 ball.
  24. Like Ron Gardenhire, I know nothing about pitching. In Lynn's case he obviously can'r hit the broad side of a barn so why does he try to hit the barn door? He has a lot of movement on all of his pitches so just aim for the middle of the plate and let the ball take care of the rest. If he gets pounded so be it but nothing is worse than a major league pitcher who can't find the strike zone. And I mean nothing on this planet is worse than that. On top of that he had the demeanor of someone who wished he was any place else other than where he was. Then the ground ball was just out of Morrison's reach with Dozier playing behind the bag in one of those crazy shifts. Stop reading spread sheets and just play ball PLEASE.
  25. 6 of the position players last night hitting under .250 so was this great pitching by Seattle or simply a weak Twins lineup? Mauer's .300 plus now way in the rear view mirror. 1 run in 2 games with a Cardinals team in town not happy about being swept in their place and would love to return the favor. Berrios needs to step it up tonight and the offense better wake up and that includes Buxton who can play the headache only so far. He is starting to be a headache. They better at least split these 2 against the Cards or here we go again.
