Where I live, I only watch the Twins on TV when they play the Yankees, Mets or Red Sox. Last night, though I missed seeing the comeback! It was definitely great to hear that both Morneau and Carroll had 4 hits -- Morneau, especially. Let's take a look at how the affiliates performed last night. Also, sorry this is late -- my internet was down this morning! ROCHESTER 3, TOLEDO 1 Shairon Martis had a very solid start for the Red Wings, going 7 innings, allowing only 1 run on 3 hits, striking out 8 and walking 2. Bobby Lanigan pitched the remaining 2 innings, striking out 2. Chris Parmelee and Rene Rivera (both with 3 hits including a double) led the way on offense. Matt Carson was 2-for-4 with a double, Eduardo Escobaro had 2 singles in 5 trips to the plate, and Evan Bigley and Brian Dinkelman each singled. Here's the link to the box score. NEW BRITAIN 5, ALTOONA 4 Aaron Thompson went 6 innings, giving up 1 run on 5 hits. He struck out 3 and walked 3. The Altoona offense got to the bullpen, though, as David Bromberg gave up 2 runs in 1 inning of work, allowing 2 hits and walking 3. Bruce Pugh also tossed 2 innings, giving up 1 run on 3 hits, striking out 1 and walking 1. 5 Rock Cats players had 2 hits apiece tonight: Aaron Hicks (inc. a double); Chris Herrmann; Chris Colabello (inc. a home run); Daniel Rohlfing (inc. a double); Nathan Hanson (inc. a home run). Deibinson Romero added a single, and James Beresford doubled. Colabello's home run -- a 3-run walk-off, nonetheless -- was his 17th, and he had 3 RBIs, giving him an impressive 80 on the season. Here's the link to the box score. FT. MYERS 0, ST. LUCIE 6 Matthew Summers went 3 innings in his start, giving up 7 hits a 5 runs (3 earned), striking out 3 and walking 2. He allowed 3 home runs. Clint Dempster threw 3 and 2/3 innings, allowing 3 hits and 1 run. He walked 2 and struck out 3. He allowed a home run, as well. A.J. Achter tossed 1 and 1/3 scoreless innings, giving up 2 hits and striking out 2. Offense was at a premium for the Miracle. Anderson Hidalgo doubled in 4 at-bats, and Daniel Santana and Andy Leer each singled. Here's the link to the box score. BELOIT 8, KANE COUNTY 1 I'm sure Seth and Jeremy will have a much more detailed recap, but here's the basic rundown. Matt Tomshaw had a great start, going 7 innings, allowing only 1 run on 3 hits, striking out 5 and walking 1. Dallas Gallant tossed a scoreless innings, striking out 1, and Corey Kimes also threw a scoreless frame, allowing 2 hits. There were a bunch of hits for the Snappers tonight. Stephen Wickens was 3-for-4 with 2 doubles and 2 RBIs. Then there were a bunch of singles: Eddie Rosario (3); Miguel Sano (2) and 2 RBIs; Nate Roberts (2); JaDamion Williams (2); Jairo Rodriguez (2); Drew Leachman (1). In addition to Sano's RBIs, Rosario, Leachman, Wickens and Rodriguez all drove in at least 1. Here's the link to the box score. GCL TWINS 4, GCL RED SOX 5 This is a game where the score truly doesn't matter. Andrew Albers, on a rehab assignment, went 2 and 2/3 innings, allowing 1 run on 3 hits, striking out 1 and walking 3. Kyle Gibson threw 1 and 1/3 innings, allowing 1 hit and striking out 1. Randy Rosario threw 3 innings, allowing 1 unearned run on 2 hits, striking out 4 and walking 4. Trent Higginbottham went 1 and 1/3 innings, allowing 2 runs (1 earned) on 1 hit, striking out 1 and walking 2. Byron Buxton was 1-for-2 with a single and 2 RBIs and a walk. Jose Ramirez had 2 singles in 5 at-bats, and Derek Rodriguez and Logan Wade each added singles, as well. The Twins walked 9 times today, which is nice to see. They also struck out 9 times. Here's the link to the box score. ----------------------------------------------- Players of the Day for Friday, August 3 Hitter of the Day: Chris Colabello (for the big walk-off HR) Pitchers of the Day: Matt Tomshaw and Shairon Martis (similar pitching lines, solid starts) ------------------------------------------- Schedule for Saturday, August 4 Rochester @ Toledo --- ??? I'll be honest -- I was a little disappointed with the trade deadline. Aside from dealing Liriano, no big moves, no small moves. But if the offers weren't there, then they weren't there. But this is certainly a tough time to be a Twins fan! If you're reading this, though, you realize that there are other things to focus on besides the action/inaction at Target Field. So let's take a look at how the #futuretwins did tonight. ROCHESTER (OFF) NEW BRITAIN 3, BOWIE 11 A rough one for the Rock Cats. Logan Darnell had a tough start, lasting only 3 innings and giving up 5 runs on 8 hits, striking out 1 and walking 2. David Bromberg tossed 2 innings, giving up 1 run on 3 hits, striking out 5 and walking 1. Edgar Ibarra lasted 1 and 2/3 innings, surrendering 3 runs on 3 hits, striking out 2 and walking 3. Finally, Marty Popham went 1 and 1/3 inning, giving up 2 runs on 3 hits, striking out 1. [PRBREAK][/PRBREAK] Unfortunately, the offense couldn't keep pace. Chris Herrmann led the way, going 3-for-5 with his 8th home run and 2 RBIs. Joe Benson doubled and walked in 3 at-bats, and Aaron Hicks, Deibinson Romero and Rene Tosoni all singled. This was an ugly game. There were 3 Rock Cats errors tonight. I'm not going to name names, but they rhyme with Sherrmann, Nicks, and Feresford. Here's the link to the box score. FT. MYERS 1, DAYTONA 2 Madison Boer turned in a very good start for the Miracle, going 6 innings and giving up just 1 run on 6 hits, striking out 4 and walking 3. Ricky Bowen tossed an inning in relief and gave up 1 run on 1 hit, striking out 1 and walking 2. Michael Tonkin pitched a scoreless inning, striking out 3 and giving up 1 hit. Daniel Santana and Josmil Pinto each had 2 hits, including a double, and Lance Ray doubled in 3 at-bats. Pinto was responsible for plating the Miracle's lone run, and also walked. Santana stole his 14th base of the season. Here's the link to the box score. BELOIT 8, KANE COUNTY 6 Taylor Rogers started for the Snappers, and went 5 innings, giving up 5 runs (only 2 earned) on 4 hits, striking out 5 and walking 1. Tim Atherton came on in relief, and threw 1 and 2/3 innings, allowing 1 run on 2 hits, walking 1. Mason Melotakis lasted 2/3 of an inning, giving up 2 hits and 2 walks, striking out 1 along the way. Finally, Zachary Jones threw 1 and 2/3 innings, allowing no hits and striking out 3. On offense, tonight was about two of the top Twins prospects. Miguel Sano was 2-for-5 with a double, a home run, and 5 RBIs. He now has 20 doubles, 21 home runs and 81 RBIs. Eddie Rosario was 3-for-5 with a double and an RBI. Nate Roberts had a great game, as well, going 3-for-4 with a double, an RBI and 2 runs scored. Tyler Grimes was 2-for-4 with a triple. Kenny Vargas doubled and walked in 3 at-bats, and Stephen Wickens and JaDamion Williams each had singles. Notably, these young prospects are not perfect. Rosario had 2 errors, and Sano and Atherton each had 1. Here's the link to the box score. ELIZABETHTON 3, BURLINGTON 2 This was a pitchers' duel, to be sure. Ricardo Arevalo started for E-Town and went 4 innings, surrendering 1 run on 1 hit, walking 5 and striking out 3. Despite the walks, the lone run came on a solo homer. Luis Nunez threw 2 scoreless innings, giving up 2 hits and striking out 2. J.T. Chargois also tossed 2 innings, giving up 1 run on 2 hits, striking out 3. Christian Powell threw a scoreless 9th and 10th innings, allowing 1 hit and striking out 2. Tyler Duffey tossed a scoreless 11th, striking out 1. There wasn't much offense to speak of tonight for E-Town. Through the first 10 innings, this is what happened: Joshua Hendriks doubled, and Candido Pimentel, Niko Goodrum, and Michael Quesada singled. Jorge Polanco doubled and singled. Polanco and Goodrum had RBIs, and Quesada and Kelvin Mention walked. In the home half of the 11th, Adam Walker led off with a triple, and 3 batters later, Quesada drove him in with a game-winning, walk-off single. An exciting way to end the game! Here's the link to the box score. GULF COAST TWINS 2, GULF COAST ORIOLES 3 Felix Jorge started for the Twins today, and went 3 and 2/3 scoreless innings. He gave up 2 hits, and struck out 3 and walked 2. In relief, Andre Martinez threw 2 innings, and gave up 2 runs on 2 hits, walking 1. Alexander Muren tossed 2 and 1/3 innings, giving up 1 run on 4 hits, striking out 1. Aderlin Mejia led the offense today, going 3-for-4 with a double and an RBI, and is batting .341 on the season. John Murphy, Jose Ramirez, Kelly Cross, Zach Larson and Will Hurt all singled. Here's the link to the box score. ------------------------------------------- Players of the Day for Wednesday, August 1 Hitter of the Day: Miguel Sano Pitcher of the Day: Madison Boer ------------------------------------------ Schedule for Thursday, August 2 Rochester @ Toledo --- ??? The Twins are currently throttling the Indians. It's nice to see. Josh Willingham continues to demonstrate that he was an excellent off-season signing, and Alexi Casilla even got in on the action. Let's take a look at the action down on the farm. ROCHESTER 5, COLUMBUS 8 Liam Hendriks had a bad start. In 5 innings of work, he allowed 12 hits, 7 runs (6 earned), walked 3, struckout 1, and allowed a homer. Daniel Turpen allowed an unearned run in 1 and 1/3 innings on 3 walks and a strikeout, and Caleb Thielbar threw 1 and 2/3 scoreless innings, allowing 1 hit and 1 walk, striking out 3. There were only 5 hits in this second game, a double by Daniel Rohlfing, and singles by Joe Benson, Rene Tosoni and Shawn Roof (2 for Roof). Benson, by the way, has now hit safely in his past 5 games. Here's the link to the box score. FT. MYERS 0, BREVARD COUNTY 3 Pat Dean went 4 innings in his start today, giving up 2 runs on 8 hits. The Twins were swept by the White Sox. I didn't watch the game, but apparently this was ugly -- even by 2012 Twins standards. Luckily, there are other things on which to focus our attention, especially the Twins' affiliates. Let's take a look at the action down on the farm. ROCHESTER 5, SYRACUSE 3 Esmerling Vasquez got the win for the Red Wings tonight, throwing 5 and 1/3 innings, and giving up 3 runs (2 earned) on 5 hits, striking out 7 and walking 3. Luis Perdomo tossed the rest of the game, 3 and 2/3 innings, giving up only 2 hits and striking out 2 while walking 1.[PRBREAK][/PRBREAK] 4 Red Wings players -- Tsuyoshi Nishioka, Chris Parmelee, Danny Valencia and Evan Bigley -- each had 2 hits. Valencia and Bigley each had doubles. Wilkin Ramirez and Ray Chang added singles. Valencia had his 7th error of the season. Here's the link to the box score. NEW BRITAIN 11, BINGHAMTON 2 B.J. Hermsen earned his 7th win on the season for the Rock Cats, tossing 7 innings, giving up only 2 runs, striking out 8 and walking 3. Daniel Turpen and David Bromberg each pitched scoreless innings in relief. On offense, this was Aaron Hicks' day. He was 5-for-6 and was just a triple shy of the cycle. He had 2 doubles, a home run (10th on the season), and 2 singles. He accumulated 10 total bases and 2 RBIs. Deibinson Romero quietly had 4 hits, including a double. Oswaldo Arcia, Chris Colabello, Joe Benson and Rene Tosoni each had 2 hits, and James Beresford had a single. Hicks now has a very respectable .284/.379/.456 line on the year. Here's the link to the box score. FT. MYERS 12, CHARLOTTE 4 Matthew Hauser had an excellent outing, throwing 7 scoreless innings, and allowing only 2 hits. He struck out 4 and walked 4. Luis Perdomo tossed the rest of the game, 3 and 2/3 innings, giving up only 2 hits and striking out 2 while walking 1. 4 Red Wings players -- Tsuyoshi Nishioka, Chris Parmelee, Danny Valencia and Evan Bigley -- each had 2 hits. Cole Nelson tossed 2 innings, and had a rough outing. He allowed 4 runs on 5 hits, including 2 home runs, and struck out 2. Steven Liddle had 2 hits, including a home run, and 4 RBIs. Josmil Pinto was also 2-for-4 with a home run and a double. Daniel Rams, Anderson Hidalgo (3 RBIs) and Andy Leer each had 2 hits, as well. This is always an interesting time of year, with the rampant trade speculation. Will the Twins trade Francisco Liriano? Denard Span? It's curious, but understandable, that they're listening on Josh Willingham. Make no mistake -- just two weeks from now, this team could, and probably will, look quite different. Let's take a look at how the affiliates performed today. With the potential for change in Minneapolis comes the likelihood of promotion for some of these kids. ROCHESTER 4, NORFOLK 1 This game took forever -- 15 innings, in fact. Liam Hendriks had a great outing. He threw 7 innings and allowed only 1 run on 5 hits. He struck out 6 and walked 1.[PRBREAK][/PRBREAK] Lester Oliveros was also excellent out of the bullpen, throwing 3 scoreless innings, allowing 1 hit and striking out 3. Kyle Waldrop threw 1/3 of the 11th inning, allowing a single, getting a sac bunt, and intentionally walking Lew Ford before being removed in favor of Caleb Thielbar, who quickly induced a double play to get out of the jam. Thielber threw 3 and 2/3 innings, striking out 2 and allowing only 1 hit. Daniel Sattler threw a scoreless 15th. Matt Carson got the scoring started with a solo home run in the first inning, and also singled later. After Carson's homer, the Red Wings did not score until the 15th inning. In the 13 innings between runs, Chris Parmelee doubled and walked twice, Ray Chang had 2 singles in 5 trips to the plate, and Tsuyoshi Nishioka was 1-for-5. In the 15th inning, Rene Rivera and Pedro Florimon each singled, then Matt Carson was intentionally walked to get to Parmelee. Parmelee doubled to left field to clear the bases, and that was that. Here's the link to the box score. NEW BRITAIN 8, NEW HAMPSHIRE 0 This game didn't quite make it 6 innings due to rain. Heavy rain, if New Britain's weather was the same that I saw in and around Hartford this afternoon. David Bromberg wasn't brilliant today, but he was effective enough to get the win. He threw all 6 innings, gave up 2 hits and struck out 2, but he walked 3 along the way. His ERA is 3.16 after today's performance. In only 5 and 2/3 innings of offense, the Rock Cats did some damage. Deibinson Romero had 2 doubles, a walk, and scored twice. Chris Colabello also doubled and drove in 2 runs. That was his 28th double of the season. Aaron Hicks was 1-for-3 with a walk and an RBI, and is batting .275 on the season. Chris Herrmann had a single and 2 walks. Estarlin De Los Santos was 1-for-2 with a single and an RBI, Joe Benson singled in 3 at-bats, and Minnesota's own Nathan Hanson singled and drove in 2 runs. Top prospect Oswaldo Arcia left the game in the third inning with stomach issues from the heat, but is expected back tomorrow. Here's the link to the box score. FT. MYERS 1, DUNEDIN 4 Pat Dean took a tough loss for the Miracle today. He threw 6 innings, giving up 2 runs on 6 hits. He struck out 5 and issued 0 free passes. Clint Dempster threw 1 scoreless inning in relief, allowing 1 hit and 2 walks while striking out 1. Ricky Bowen tossed the last 2 innings, and gave up 2 runs (1 earned) on 3 hits, walking 2 and striking out 1. Dean fell to 6-6 on the season, and his ERA is 3.89. Shortstop Daniel Santana committed his 21st error of the season. There wasn't too much Miracle offense to speak of today. The team mustered only 5 hits, and 3 came off the bat of Levi Michael -- all singles. A good sign, though, that last season's first round pick is starting to hit the ball. Michael is batting .240 now. Daniel Santana and Daniel Ortiz both singled, as well. The Miracle's best chance was in the 8th inning, when the bases were loaded with no outs. But Rene Tosoni lined out to second, Josmil Pinto had a sac fly to right, and Daniel Ortiz struck out looking to end the threat. Here's the link to the box score. BELOIT _, LANSING _ -- CANCELLED This game will be made up Thursday as part of a double-header. First game at 5:30. ELIZABETHTON 4, JOHNSON CITY 6 Angel Mata got the start for E-Town, and went 4 innings, giving up 3 runs on 3 hits, striking out 2 and walking 3. Corey Kimes was up next, and only threw 2/3 of an inning, giving up 2 runs on 2 hits and 2 walks. Brett Lee threw 1 and 1/3 scoreless, allowing 2 hits, striking out 3 and walking 2. Luis Nunez tossed 2 innings, giving up 1 run on 3 walks and a strikeout. The final pitcher of the evening was J.T. Chargois, who threw 1 perfect inning. In all, there were 10 walks issued by E-Town tonight. Young prospect Max Kepler hit his third home run of the season tonight, and singled, and is batting .312 on the season. Rory Rhodes and Adam Walker each had 2 hits, and Niko Goodrum, Travis Harrison, Joshua Hendricks, Michael Quesada and Romy Jimenez all had one hit. Jimenez drove in 2 and walked, as well. Here's the link to the box score. GCL TWINS 6, GCL RAYS 7 Kyle Gibson threw 2 innings and 27 pitches today on his way back from Tommy John surgery. Honestly, the stats don't even matter. But here they are: 2 runs on 2 hits, no strikeouts or walks. After the game, Gibson tweeted: "Another healthy day on the mound! 2 innings and by no means the #s I want but 27 more pitches closer to 100%. Going for a clean 1 inning on Saturday." After Gibson, Matthew Tomshaw threw 1 scoreless inning, Kuo Hua Lo gave up 2 runs (1 earned) in 2/3 of an inning on 2 hits and 2 walks, striking out 1. Thereafter, Yorman Landa tossed 2 and 1/3 scoreless innings and gave up 3 hits, walking 1 and striking out 1. Felix Jorge was very good, throwing 2 scoreless innings, allowing no hits or walks and striking out 2. Finally, Alexander Muren took the loss, giving up 3 runs (2 earned) in 1 inning of work. Muren gave up 2 hits and 2 walks, and struck out 1. Right fielder Kelvin Ortiz was 2-for-4 with 2 doubles, first baseman Bryan Haar was 2-for-3 with an RBI, and catcher Jorge Fernandez was 2-for-4 with an RBI, as well. Second baseman Jose Ramirez doubled in 4 at-bats, and third baseman Aderlin Mejia, DH Joel Licon, left fielder Javier Pimentel and shortstop Will Hurt all singled. Here's the link to the box score. -------------------------------------------------------------- Players of the day for Wednesday, July 18, 2012 Hitter of the Day: Max Kepler (courtesy of JC from Knuckleballs Blog) Pitcher of the Day: Liam Hendriks --------------------------------------------------- Schedule for Thursday, July 19, 2012 Rochester @ Norfolk --- ??? Twins Fans: Who Are the "99 Percent?"

If you made your way to this blog, you're not an average Twins fan. Did you find it from my Twitter account (where I tweet almost exclusively about the Twins and Rock Cats)? Do you subscribe to my blog and read or peruse most every post? Or are you reading this at TwinsDaily.com, where I double-post a lot of my articles just to reach a different, more diverse fan base? Regardless of how you got here, you're not normal. You probably know the geographic location of at least one of the Twins minor league affiliates. Maybe you even recognize names like Miguel Sano and Byron Buxton. I bet you can match some of the Twins' retired numbers with the correct player names. And you probably watch enough Twins baseball on FSN that you tire of Dick & Bert, and occasionally mute the TV, turn on AM 1500, and follow along that way. The purpose of this post is to tell you that, if some of these above-referenced descriptions apply to you, you are not a normal Twins fan. In fact, you might be in the "exclusive" 1 percent of Twins fans. I love discussing Twins baseball, reading about it online, and writing about it. If I could go back and re-do life, I'd probably try to be a sports writer. And many of the people -- Twins fans -- that I come into contact with on the internet (or even the die-hard season ticket holders at Rock Cats games) are the same way. A lot of us, myself included, are quick to react to trades, contract extensions, and personnel moves, and we closely track the development of top prospects. Some of the most dedicated do our own research and come up with suggested trades of our own. It's a fun game, really. And being a Twins fan to this extent is a great hobby. I think, though, that it's important to step back and think about the who the Twins do business for: the masses, the other 99 percent. The 99 percent go to maybe 1 or 2 Twins games a year, and to them Target Field might very well still have a newness factor that, on its own, is enough to get them out to the ballpark. The TV or radio broadcasts are often background, or ancillary, to other activities are going on in the house. The 99 percent often tune in for bits and pieces of the game before bedtime. They'll read some of the Star Tribune or Pioneer Press coverage, but certainly not everything that is written about the Twins. Sure, they love a winner, but a bad Twins season doesn't keep them awake at night (in fact, they probably go to those same 1-2 games a year even if the team stinks). It might not cross their minds that the Twins, after 2 awful seasons, might make a managerial change. These people are the 99 percent. There's nothing at all wrong with the 99 percent of Twins fans, and this post isn't intended to disparage them in any way. I'm just suggesting that certain moves that bloggers and serious fans might advocate (just say, for example, replacing Ron Gardenhire after this season) likely are viewed through at least 2 different lenses by the Twins' front office: the winning-on-the-field lense, and the business-PR lens. We hope that the winning-on-the-field perspective trumps the PR perspective, but the Twins, as a profit-making entity, are bound to consider every move they make in terms of how it affects the financial bottom line. With the overwhelming majority of Twins fans likely self-describing as "casual," it's clear that we -- those reading this post -- are a vocal minority. As we think about the Twins at the trading deadline this year, I'm reminded of the Twins' failure to move players such as Michael Cuddyer, Joe Nathan and Jason Kubel last season. Perhaps last season is the perfect example of the dichotomy between the baseball side, and the business side, of Twins baseball. It certainly would have made baseball sense to deal at least one of two of those players, but the Twins were still drawing well at Target Field, despite an awful record. Was there a fear in the organization that having a fire sale would substantially dwindle attendance and hamper 2012 season ticket sales? Perhaps. In the end, of course, the team failed to trade any of these players, and lost all via free agency. So what made sense to me -- dealing Cuddyer for whatever you could get for him since he was aging, expensive and shouldn't have been re-signed -- might not have been as clear-cut a decision for the organization. Still, though, when it comes down to it, you would like the organization to make moves designed to help the team win games, not just fill the ballpark. And that's where the Twins scare me a little bit. -

Good list, and I like having Arcia so high. Between his hitting ability (hasn't lost a step moving up to AA so far) and the young age, he should be shooting up most lists. I might move Wimmers down a little, since he's very much in limbo right now. -
Here we are, probably the most boring couple days during the baseball season -- the All-Star break. It was nice to see Joe Mauer get a hit last night, and interesting to see him play first base. It's tough to be too positive about the Twins right now. Sure, Josh Willingham, Ben Revere and Scott Diamond have exceeded expectations, but there's not a whole lot else to hang your hat on if you just look at the Twins right now. So, let's take a look at the affiliates, the Future Twins (#futuretwins if you're following me on Twitter for Rock Cats updates).[PRBREAK][/PRBREAK] FT. MYERS 6, CLEARWATER 5 Tom Stuifbergen got the start for the Miracle tonight, and went 4 innings. He gave up only 1 hit, and struck out 4. Twins fans, take note: Matt Capps threw tonight, on his rehab assignment, after Stuifbergen. Capps tossed 1 inning, allowed 1 hit and no walks, but did surrender an unearned run. Thereafter, Adrian Salcedo tossed 3 innings, allowing 4 runs on 6 hits, striking out 1 and walking 1. Michael Tonkin picked up the save, his first of the season, throwing a perfect 9th. On offense, Andy Leer and Anderson Hidalgo both homered. Daniel Santana had 2 hits, including a double. Joe Benson (yes, the Joe Benson that is still a top prospect rehabbing a wrist injury) had a double in 5 at-bats, as did Michael Gonzales in 3 trips to the plate. Kyle Knudson and Daniel Rams also singled. Here's the link to the box score. BELOIT 3, FT. WAYNE 6 Tyler Jones started for the Snappers tonight, and lasted 3 and 1/3 innings. He gave up 8 hits and 5 runs (4 earned), striking out 3 and walking 2. The bullpen was better: Cole Johnson threw 2 and 1/3 scoreless innings and allowed only 1 hit; Dallas Gallant tossed 1 and 1/3 scoreless, striking out 1; and Corey Williams threw 1 inning, allowing 1 run on 1 hit, striking out 2 and walking 1. On offense, let's start with the big guy, Miguel Sano. He was 2-for-3 with a triple, his third of the season. He had 2 RBIs, a walk and a strikeout (also he committed 0 errors). Stephen Wickens, Drew Leachman, Steven Liddle, Jonathan Goncalves and Jairo Rodriguez all singled. Here's the link to the box score. ELIZABETHTON 4, GREENVILLE 7 Ricardo Arevalo got the start for the E-Town Twins tonight, going 4 innings. He gave up 6 runs on 5 hits, striking out 4 and walking 1. Brett Lee threw 2 scoreless innings, giving up 3 hits and striking out 2. J.T. Chargois was also effective, tossing 1 perfect inning and striking out 1. Tyler Duffey threw the 8th inning, giving up 1 run on 2 hits, striking out 1. E-Town had ample offense, just not enough runs. Jhonatan Arias, catcher, had 3 singles in 4 at-bats, Jorge Polanco and Niko Goodrum each had 2 hits, Joshua Henkricks had a double, and Max Kepler, Adam Walker and Travis Harrison each singled. Here's the link to the box score. GCL TWINS 5, GCL ORIOLES 2 (7 inning game) Felix Jorge tossed 4 scoreless innings, giving up only 2 hits and striking out 4. Alexander Muren threw 2 scoreless innings, striking out 1, and Gonzalo Sanudo was the only Twins pitcher to get into trouble, giving up 2 runs on 3 hits, compiling 1 strikeout along the way. Center fielder John Murphy and Joel Licon each had 2 hits, Murphy with 1 double and Licon with 2 RBIs. Aderlin Mejia and Javier Pimental each singled. Here's the link to the box score. GCL TWINS 6, GCL ORIOLES 1 Jouse Montanez was very effective, going 5 innings and allowing only 1 run on 3 hits, striking out 5 and issuing 0 free passes. Jose Berrios earned the save, tossing 2 perfect, scoreless innings and striking out 3. Rene Tosoni had 2 hits tonight, both doubles, and 2 RBIs. Second baseman Jose Ramirez had a double, and Joel Licon, Bryan Haar and John Murphy all singled. Mejia, Haar and Murphy also had RBIs. Good imagery on the reaper with stirrups & socks! I guess he has manly, human-like legs, but I had always imagined either no legs, or just bones.

There's no sense trying to compete for the next 3 months to win what's shaping up to be a weak AL Central, when instead the Twins should be focusing on trading several players to legitimately competitive teams. I still love the team as much as I always do, but it's time to pack it in and focus on the future. Although the position players have generally remained healthy, the pitching staff has been decimated. It says something when, if the season ended right now and the Twins somehow were in the playoffs, your 1-2 starting pitching combination would be Scott Diamond and Nick Blackburn. There have been (and will continue to be) many spot starts by AAA or AAAA (at best) players, some of whom will rack up several thousand frequent flyer miles on the Rochseter-Minneapolis shuttle. We're watching Brian Dozier go through a protracted rookie slump, both at the plate and on defense. For the record, I'm OK with that. I still maintain that his upside is worth the hiccups now, but it's clear that he has work do to. We're trying to figure out Justin Morneau's future, as well as the intertwined future of Chris Parmelee. I think the organization needs to decide what Alexi Casilla's future is. We're giving auditions to some new bullpen guys like Tyler Robertson. We're seeing if Ben Revere can hit .300 on a consistent basis. In short, there's a lot of stuff up in the air, which does not bode well for a team that is not quite halfway through the season. This isn't to suggest that the Twins can't be better than they were last year -- they should be -- it's to suggest that 2012 is not going to be their year, and that I'm officially declaring that right now. And I think the Twisn need to declare that right now, as well. That being said, it's time to make tough decisions. The Twins should not be desparate -- they have some tradeable assets that should yield several offers. And they have more than 4 weeks of working the phones left before the trade deadline. So here's what I think they need to do: I would trade Denard Span. I would trade Francisco Liriano. In fact, given the Yankees' recent injuries to CC Sabathia and Andy Pettite (though the Yanks said they would likely handle the vacancies internally), I would probably be on the phone with Brian Cashman this morning. I would listen on Josh Willingham. I would trade Carl Pavano, assuming he establishes his health. I would declare Ben Revere the center fielder of the future (like until 2014). I would give September call-ups to Chris Herrmann (if he is batting around .270), and possibly Oswaldo Arcia, assuming he plays well in July and August for New Britain. I want to see what those guys have. I still keep Justin Morneau, unless a foolish team comes calling with a crazy offer. I think the return on him would be very low, and if the Twins do deal him, it should be next year, when he is in his walk year and is owed less money. Those are just some ideas, and they of course are not unique, nor are they my ideas. The point here is simply that the time has come to officially look toward 2013 and beyond. Well beyond. The worst action this summer is inaction.

Fixed -- thanks. That's what happens with late-night writing sometimes! -
Oh boy, it was a rough one for the Twins, who took the "pitch-to-contact" mentality to a new level when they gave up a combined 21 hits to the White Sox in what ended up being an ugly 12-5 loss. After the game, it was announced that pitcher Kyle Waldrop had been recalled to Minnesota, and Jeff Manship was optioned. It was also announced that the Twins acquired pitcher Shairon Martis from the Pirates. Don't get too excited; this sounds just like a move to acquire some minor league depth. The 25 year old is expected to join New Britain, where every pitcher that has been halfway decent has already been promoted to Rochester, where every pitcher there that has been halfway decent has seen time with the Twins. The other minor league news story of the day was that Rochester shortstop Pedro Florimon was selected as a reserve for the International League All-Star Game. He started off the season in New Britain, and was quickly promoted to AAA. He's hitting .260 on the season for Rochester, but is batting .333 over his last 10 games. Congratulations, Pedro! After that preamble, let's take a look at the action down on the farm. ROCHESTER 4, LEHIGH VALLEY 3 Samuel Deduno started for the Red Wings tonight, and threw 5 and 1/3 innings, giving up 2 runs on 4 hits. He issued 4 walks, but struck out 9! Caleb Thielbar pitched 1 inning of relief, and gave up 1 run on 2 hits. Luis Perdomo earned the win, tossing 2 and 2/3 innings and allowing only 1 hit while striking out 2. Tsuyoshi Nishioka was an offensive catalyst tonight. Yes, Tsuyoshi Nishioka. He was 2-for-5 with a pair of doubles, and RBI and a run scored. Danny Valencia, hitting pretty well lately, was 2-for-3 with a double, a run, and 2 RBIs. Ray Chang was 3-for-4 (all singles), and designated hitter Michael Hollimon contributed a double. Here's the link to the box score. NEW BRITAIN 4, TRENTON 9 Starter B.J. Hermsen had a rare rough start, and New Britain's 6 game winning streak was snapped. Hermsen lasted only 2 innings, and gave up 6 runs on 6 hits, walking 2 and striking out 1. Even after this outing, his AA ERA is a respectable 3.60. New Rock Cat Daniel Sattler picked up the slack, throwing 4 innings out of the bullpen, allowing 1 run on 3 hits, and walking 1. Daniel Turpen threw 2 innings, allowed only 1 hit, and struck out 2. Finally, Edgar Ibarra pitched the 9th inning, and gave up 2 runs on 2 hits, striking out 1. Hermsen, Sattler and Ibarra all surrendered a home run tonight. New Britain had 10 hits tonight, and most players got in on the action. Chris Colabello was 2-for-5 and hit his 13th home run. Chris Herrmann and Oswaldo Arcia were also 2-for-5, Deibinson Romero was 2-for-3, Aaron Hicks was 1-for-4, and Nathan Hanson had a double in 3 at-bats. Arcia also picked up his 7th RBI in his brief Rock Cats career. Here's the link to the box score. FT. MYERS 6, TAMPA 2 Pat Dean had a very solid start for the Miracle. In 6 innings of work, he gave up just 2 runs (1 earned) on 4 hits, striking out 2 and walking 2. Dean retired the last 9 batters he faced before being pulled. Following Dean's lead, Marty Popham tossed 2 scoreless innings, allowing just 1 hit and striking out 1, and Nelvin Fuentes threw a scoreless 9th, giving up 1 hit, striking out 1 and issuing 1 free pass. 8 of the 9 Miracle starters had at least 1 hit. Jairo Perez was 1-for-4 with a 2-run home run, his 5th of the season. Lance Ray hit his 8th homer, a solo shot. Daniel Ortiz was 2-for-4 with a double. Kyle Knudson continues to swing a hot bat, and was 2-for-3 with a double and 2 RBIs. Daniel Santana, Levi Michael, Daniel Rams and Anderson Hidalgo all contributed singles. There are lots of Daniels on this team. Here's the link to the box score. BELOIT 1, KANE COUNTY 3 David Hurlbut took a tough loss in this one. He threw 6 strong innings, giving up 2 runs (none earned) on 6 hits, striking out 6 and walking only 1. Hurlbut's ERA stands at 1.71. Cole Johnson pitched the remaining 2 innings, allowing 1 run on 2 hits, striking out 2 and walking 1. Tyler Grimes and Adam Bryant had the errors that proved costly. Beloit only had 6 hits all night. Left fielder Nate Roberts had a double in 3 at-bats and walked twice, Steven Liddle was 1-for-4 with a double and a walk, and Adam Pettersen, Drew Leachman, Jonathan Goncalves and Jairo Rodriguez each singled. The Snappers walked 7 times tonight, but couldn't convert. Miguel Sano had the night off, except for a pinch hit appearance, where he walked. Here's the link to the box score. ELIZABETHTON 5, BRISTOL 0 Angel Mata picked up his first win of the young season, throwing 5 scoreless innings. He allowed only 2 hits, and struck out 4 while walking only 1. Hein Robb was great out of the bullpen, tossing 3 scoreless innings. He allowed no hits and struck out 4. Finally, Mason Melotakis threw a scoreless 9th, striking out 2. In all, only 2 hits allowed, 10 strikeouts and 1 walk. E-Town compiled only 6 hits, but they also walked 6 times. Romy Jimenez was 2-for-4 with a home run and 3 RBIs. Candido Pimental, Niko Goodrum, Max Kepler and Jorge Polanco all contributed singles. Here's the link to the box score. ------------------------------------------ Players of the Day for Wednesday, June 27 Pitcher(s) of the Day: The E-Town Trio of Mata, Robb and Melotakis Hitter of the Day: Romy Jimenez (photo credit Thrylos from Tenth Inning Stretch -- thanks!) ---------------------------------------- Schedule for Thursday, June 28 Rochester @ Lehigh Valley --- RHP Steven Hirschfeld New Britain vs. Trenton --- LHP Blake Martin Ft.
