  • Twins Minor League Report (5/17): Lookout for Chattanooga Homers

    Tom Froemming

Chris Paul, LaMonte Wade and Zander Wiel all homered for Chattanooga in a Lookouts victory and Trevor May continued his rehab in Rochester, throwing 60 pitches over four innings. See what else happened in this lightning round edition of the minor league report.

I apologize for the extremely abbreviated report tonight. I had to spring into action unexpectedly and this was the best I could do.

A couple of real quick things to note: LaMonte Wade hit a big game-tying home run for the Lookouts in the top of the fifth inning tonight, but then was removed from the game in the bottom of the sixth. No word on why that was. Also, infielder Joe Cronin pitched for the Miracle tonight, getting out the only two batters he faced.

Love this format. Very easy to read and get jist of the game quickly. Still leaves open the possibility to explain anything extraordinary in a concise way

Agreed, I love this as well! I have to admit I mostly scan the longer stories for the names of top prospects. Obviously incredible work either way, but nothing wrong with this truncated/summary format in my opinion. As AZTwin says, you could always add commentary where warranted.

Expect the Twins view May's first start at AAA as a success.  He should get at least four more starts before his 30 day rehab is up.  Lots of time to get into shape to come up and help the Twins.  But will there be a spot for him in their rotation?

Followed the Lookouts game last night on my ipad.  Was shocked seeing Thorpe give up home run after home run, four, early in the game.  Fortunately, they all were solo and the Lookouts came back for the W.  But the Lookouts hit three out, leading to a question.  Does anyone know if Biloxi's stadium is on the small side?  Or maybe the temp/humidity came into play as 7 home runs is a lot.

With Thorpe on his first of three options, I went back to look at his career.  Pitched well in the GCL as a 17 year old, followed by another good year at Cedar Rapids as a young 18 year old.  But then he missed all of his 19 and 20 year old seasons.  Came back last year with a successful season at Hi-A Fort Myers.  Yes, he wasn't as good in a few late season games in AA, but the year was a success.

Although you can find something good in almost every start this year, he is no where near dominating AA as a 22 year old.  And for a pitcher some of us believe has the potential to be a front of the rotation starter, he has to dominate AA...at some point.  But considering his age and after missing two years, he has lots of season remaining to gain experience and settle in at AA.  If he can do that, there should be no problem seeing him join the Twins sometime during the mid-to-late part of next year.

Come on Lewis, there are lots of us waiting to see you pitch at Target Field.

I was just going to ask if anybody had any insight into Thorpe's season as well.  Kind of a crazy stat line really.  4 runs, all solo homers.  Walks didn't haunt, at least.

    Interesting about Lamonte--promotion, trade, injury?

I appreciate that the report was done in a hurry, but if we're voting, I prefer the extended cut versions, and especially, insight I can't get from reading a box score myself.  Thanks!

I can't see why they'd pull him for a promotion. Trade or injury but I think we'd have heard rumblings of a trade by now.

I was watching the Lookouts' game. Wade crashed really, really hard into the wall making a catch to end the sixth. He was down on the ground for several minutes, then got up and walked off with obvious pain in his left shoulder. He appeared to be walking uncomfortably as well, and several times reached down to touch the inside of his right thigh. The announcer talked only about the shoulder, so maybe the leg isn't a problem.

I was wondering the same thing.  And any wall-banging worries me as he had a concussion in the AFL last year (only 6 months ago).

I agree with the comments on the format. I really like it.

I'll be honest, I'm not really one who cares much about the outcome of games. But I'm very interested in how the prospects are doing individually, so the top prospect stat-line is great.

For example, I don't care much about the outcome of the Kernals game. But, it's good to know that Lewis went 0-4 with a K. This isn't really of note in terms of the game summary, so it may not show up, meaning I would've had to do my own cursory research. We all know time is money. So, you're basically paying me to read these now.

Pretty much how I feel also. I'm much more interested in how the players are doing, than how the teams are doing. Like, I'm pretty sure I don't care at all about the teams.

    Re: Format

I don't necessarily care a ton about who won and lost, but I love minor league reports that include context and tidbits I might not find out from simply perusing a box score, which I do on my own most days anyway.  Plus, I think it is cool to give recognition to excellent play, regardless of whether or not a player is considered a "prospect" by somebody somewhere.

While in this case, I did happen to notice via my cursory boxscore research, that position player Joe Cronin mopped up the Miracle game with two outs, a lot of times I wouldn't have noticed that.  Now, years from now, when Cronin is closing out games for the Dodgers, I'll have a bit of added context for that.  But that's just me.
