    IN CASE YOU MISSED IT

Here are the week’s Twins minor league-related articles.

    Highlights

We will start with the Twins choices for the organizational hitter and pitcher of the week, and then mention several other Twins prospects who had good Week 16 performances

Twins Player of the Week: BJ “Bossman” Boyd, Wichita Wind Surge
After spending seven seasons in the Oakland A’s organization, reaching Triple-A in 2018 at 24, BJ Boyd decided to go a different direction. In 2019, he headed to college and played football. He played well enough that he was getting several calls from Division I schools. Then the pandemic hit. This spring, he was sitting at home when the Twins called. He signed and was sent to Double-A Wichita in late May. He has been incredible since. In 66 games, the outfielder has hit .313/.369/.543 (.912) with 12 doubles, 15 homers and 60 RBI for the Wind Surge.

And on Tuesday, he will return to Triple-A after earning his promotion.

Twins Pitcher of the Week: Joe Ryan, St. Paul Saints
He was a strong starting pitcher for the Tampa Bay Rays. Then he headed to Tokyo to pitch for Team USA. That’s where he found out he had been traded to the Twins in the Nelson Cruz trade. He responded by going 2-0 and helping Team USA to a silver medal at the Olympics! Then he came back, packed up, came to Minnesota and threw a couple of bullpens before making his first start in the Twins organization on Friday night in St. Paul. I think it’s fair to say that it went well. He struck out the first six batters he faced and nine batters in four innings. He gave up just one run, on a solo homer.

Ryan was the Rays seventh-round pick in 2018 out of Cal State-Stanislaus. He appeared in Baseball America’s Top 100 prospect rankings after he led minor league baseball with 183 strikeouts in 2019. That season, between two levels of A ball and Double-A, he went 9-4 with a 1.96 ERA and a 0.84 WHIP. Before heading to Japan, he pitched in 12 games for Triple-A Durham and was 4-3 with a 3.63 ERA and 0.79 WHIP. In 57 innings, he had 10 walks and 75 strikeouts.

    Other Strong Performances this Week

Tyler Beck gave up five hits and two walks over six scoreless innings. He struck out six batters. Jordan Balazovic struck out six batters over six shutout frames. More impressive that he didn’t give up any runs when he also gave up four hits and five walks. Jordan Gore recorded a Save and worked 2 2/3 scoreless, hitless innings.

    Cedar Rapids Kernels

Michael Helman continued to show some surprising, and impressive power. Last week, he hit .261/.393/.783 (1.175) with four home runs. He also walked five times and stole two bases. Jesus Feliz has really come on of late. In six games last week, he hit .333/.481/.762 (1.243) with three home runs. He also walked five times and stole two bases. Patrick Winkel has a strong first full professional week. The catcher played four games and hit .400/.526/.600 (1.126) with a homer and four walks.

Steven Cruz had a terrific week. He worked five innings over two outings. He gave up just an unearned run on two hits and a walk. He also struck out ten batters. Randy Dobnak’s rehab appearance was three perfect innings with five strikeouts. Casey Legumina gave up one run over four innings. He struck out seven batters. Juan Pichardo pitched twice and gave up one run over four hits in four innings. He struck out eight batters.

    FCL Twins

Luis Gomez went 5-for-9 (.556) with three doubles in his four games. Carlos Aguiar went 5-for-13 (.385) with three homers and six RBI. Rubel Cespedes went 2-for-9 (.222) over three games this week, but both hits were home runs. Wander Valdez played in five games. He hit .333/.412/.600 (1.012) with a double and a home run. Kala’i Rosario hit .368 with two doubles, a homer and seven RBI.

Wilker Reyes went 1-0. He gave up five hits but no runs over five scoreless innings. Giovahnney German threw four hitless, scoreless innings. He struck out three batters. (although he did walk six batters). Malik Barrington recorded a save in his professional debut. He gave up one hit over three scoreless innings. He struck out six batters.

    Lowlights

We are talking about small samples for these six-game weeks, so it’s important not to make any big decisions or develop a full impression on a player from this small size. It’s just a reminder of the fact that baseball is hard, and all players have good and bad stretches.

    St. Paul Saints

Ben Rortvedt has certainly had some moments since returning to the Saints. This past week, he went 1-for-13 (.077) with five strikeouts. Sherman Johnson went 1-for-10 (.100), and Drew Stankiewicz went 2-for 16 (.125), though he did have four walks and a homer.

Robinson Leyer gave up five runs (4 earned) on four hits and two walks over two innings. Nick Vincent got DFAd by the Twins and then gave up five runs (4 earned) on four hits (2 homers) and a walk in 2 2/3 innings.

    Wichita Wind Surge

Ernie de la Trinidad went 2-for-13 (.154) in his three games. Jermaine Palacios played all six games and went 3-for-19 (.158), though he had two doubles.

Chris Vallimont made two starts last week. He gave up ten earned runs on ten hits (4 homers) and six walks in just nine innings.

    Cedar Rapids Kernels

Gabriel Maciel played in four games and went 2-for-14 (.143). Seth Gray went 3-for-20 (.150) over five games. He did have a double and a homer and six RBI.

    Ft. Myers Might Mussels
Will Holland played in five games and went 0-for-17. Misael Urbina went 3-for-24 (.125) over six games.

This was an excellent report.  The ending sets of stats giving us a perspective on how the players rank with other minor leaguers was great and so were the year to date statistics on our prospects.  Some of those prospects may need to be adjusted when you do the end of the year prospect rankings.

Fantastic report, Seth, and loved the information about where they rank in all of MiLB baseball.  Not asking for additional work, but wondering how Miranda ranks among AA and AAA players.  If memory serves, there are often some video game type numbers coming out of the lower levels.

All four full-season teams are over .500 with three at least 10 games over.  That is fantastic.  But those poor FCL Twins have an ugly record, just plain ugly.  And when I checked a few days ago, the DSL Twins record was similarly ugly.  Does having the lowest two levels winning so few games mean anything to you?  Should we be concerned?

It is great seeing Sabato getting a promotion.  Expect his streak of home runs recently got the Twins attention.  Hopefully, he will do what Severino did when moving up, that is tear the cover off the ball.  In response to sorney above, agree that Cavaco isn't putting up great numbers for a former first round pick.  On the other hand it is a noticeable improvement over his first year in 2019.  Considering he didn't play last year, I see this improvement as a step forward...perhaps a big step.  The key will be if he can take another step next year?

I agree with Roger on Cavaco. He was drafted very young and raw. Last week someone posted on TD exactly what Roger was asking for. I think it was on Fangraphs. AA & AAA leaders.

I can't think of any reason to be concerned about win-loss records at any of the levels, for sure not in the FCL and DSL. Too many variables. Guys don't play every day. Catchers play half-games usually. Players often are just going through pro ball. Stats for players don't matter much in those lower levels... wins-losses mean far less.

I'm guilty of this too, but I just haven't factored in the Florida State League effect on the Mighty Mussels this year. It absolutely still has a huge impact on players numbers. You can hit a ball squarely there and it might go nowhere. We all know that, but for whatever reason, this year I haven't considered it as much. Not sure if it's the affiliation changes or what.

So yeah, I almost think that Sabato could take off by not playing in Florida. That said, contact is going to be the key for him. Can he catch up to fastballs? Can he make adjustments? How did the electronic strike zone effect players in Low-A?

Also, will be nice for him to just start over with a new team, new stats, maybe not having the batting average that starts with a 1 for awhile will help.

Very happy to see BJ Boyd get promoted.  He was a real difference maker on that AA squad.  He has done nothing but hit and hit well since they brought him onboard.  I don't know how they found him but that was a good find.  He will be sorely missed in that Windsurge offense but hopefully some of the other guys step up.

I was bummed to see the weeks line for De la Trinidad and Palacios.  They had the poor pitching Springfield team and did not hit well.  Ernie hasn't been the same hitter since returning from injury so guessing whatever the issue is he isn't 100%.  Palacios has been a streaky hitter this year and has slowed down quite a bit after the season half way point.  Hopefully they both rebound as they are two of my favorite underdog players to watch.

I had to look at Julliens line for this week three times as the 610 OBP was really tripping me up.  For a minute I thought maybe the Slugging and OBP were mixed up because you rarely see a 610 OBP but he does walk a lot and is the league leader in walks. I am not sure how accurate MiLB gameday is but IMO he sure gets the good end of a fair number of close calls.  At any rate whatever he he is doing it is working as being first in walks and number of pitches can only help him get good pitches to hit.

I was ready to give up on Helman after his poor 2019 season and the fact that it looked like he may never hit for power.  Looks like I was wrong as he is hitting for power now and looks like he could be legit.  The Twins sure have a lot of interesting players at 2nd base.

Loving what Louie Varland has been doing all year.  Hoping he just stays healthy to the end.

While it's a down week for Palacios, I think he only started in 3 games and was used as a pinch hitter 3 times, getting on base 2x as a pinch hitter or something like that. No doubt about it, though, not his finest week at the plate.

Sabato has been much better in August with tons of the expected power showing through. It looks like Sabato may have made a major change in his approach to not be so passive? The power exploded as the ludicrous walk rate tanked and the K rate remained the same. No matter how I slice it, though, K rates above 30% in the low minors say non-prospect to me.

    • Pre-Aug = .185/.370/.290 OPS .660, 21.4% BB, 31.5% K
    • August =  .208/.339/.688 OPS 1.026. 11.8% BB, 33.9% K

Matt Wallner falls into the same boat. His triple slash looks good, but the K rate is awful.

I'm likely in the minority on this, but would love to see Boyd as well as Drew Maggi, get a September promotion to the Twins.  I realize neither have a long term future with the Twins, but with a combined 6000 minor league ABs, these 2 guys exemplify the grit and professionalism that I admire.  Are there 40-man roster implications that would prevent this from happening?

Used to be that players could be rewarded for additional service time or staying with the game with a September callup, and then jettisoned during the off-season. Doesn't seem logical for the current Twins team, sadly.

G.J. Boyd having a great year and shouldn't be stuck at AA ball. St. Paul ahs no ral first baseman, or really a DH. So good move.

Is Zander Weil coming back to St. Paul for the final weeks, or has his tenure as a Twins prospect ended. Same for Gabe Snyder...will he get out of the FCL league?

I am still amazed at some of the names that have held onto jobs in St. Paul for the season, and also surprised the

Neither Boyd nor Maggi are on the 40 man roster right now. At the moment, the 40 man has 46 total people, including 6 folks in the 60 man IL (Kirilloff, Garlick, Stashak, Smeltzer, Dobnak and Colina). Dobnak is about to come off the 60 man which could create a roster crunch of its own. Maeda, Canterino and Rogers are all potential 60 man IL additions, but adding any of the three wouldn't be fun to see.

Maeda looks to potentially have some UCL damage, but they're still getting opinions.

Canterino having an elbow strain after being shut down with a previous elbow strain sounds incredibly ominous.

Rogers should be to the point where he's doing finger movements. I'd imagine more will be known about his potential to avoid surgery soon.

How is Spencer Steer defensively at 3B.  Does he have a chance to be an everyday 3B or is his future a utility guy?

Where have they been playing Martin?

Steer is solid at 3B and SS, but most would say he can be an everyday 2B.

Martin's split his time between CF and SS.

Martin's split his time between CF and SS.

Thanks Seth.  Do you think he has enough bat to be an every day player?  That versatility would make for a great bench player.

Based on his 2021, it'd be hard to say he can't become an everyday player with continued development.

Cavaco will be one of the biggest busts in Twins draft history…

Then we will have to agree to disagree.  It's waaaaay to early to make any kind of informed decision on his success or lack thereof.  I believe he just turned 20 and has played less than a year and half of professional ball (and didn't play organized ball in 20').

Yes, he has a lot of K's... so what.  A statement like above comes across as showing a lack of understanding of the developmental side of the game and just how hard the game actually is.  Perhaps he doesn't make it, but it won't be his fault and calling him a "bust" is doing him a disservice.

I agree. Anyone Calling him a bust  or anyone is a disservice to them.  Cavaco is a 1st rounder for a reason. Strike outs across all leagues are high.  SABATO and Cavaco did not play ball for a year I believe.   Sabato’s first year to pro ball not playing at all.  It’s Still early and a learning curve to pro ball.  There’s a lot of factors to figure out development side to pro ball.   SABATO seems to be figuring it out.   The strike outs are also part of that league and Also feel it will be good for him moving up.   The computer strike zone was a negative and didn’t help in anyone’s approach in my opinion.   SABATO was the #1 hitter analytically in college baseball across the board.   His power is off the charts and hits all fields.  It’s early in both of their development.  Average is over rated, strikeouts will happen slugging and on base percentage is a key component to see.   They will be better I believe in their development process.  As a Twin fan I look to be positive.
