2019 MLB Draft Day 1 Thread

The draft coverage here has been excellent. Thanks for all of this.

I always get excited about draft day! Too bad I won't be able to see the results until tomorrow. I haven't done as much tape watching as years past so I'm not super familiar with the class. I really hope we avoid the pitcher from Kentucky though, pitchers with long injury histories always scare me and they rarely do much in the majors anyways. If I was a betting man I'd say we go for the catcher from Baylor (too lazy to look up the spelling of his name)

Yes, thanks for everything you all have done in helping us prepare to be either happy or disappointed come Wednesday night.

 

 

It's nice to be in the position to be able to take the best player available. I like the Baylor catcher, but also there are some pretty good 3rd basemen. I'm going with Keoni Cavaco. Much like Lewis, he's not the consensus pick.

My last seven 1st round desires once the Twins were on the clock (result):

I like Matthew Allan at his point for 2019, and I hope the Twins can figure out the bonus offer.

Honestly, one of the things I've enjoyed about this season is not spending so much time following the draft... 

 

The draft thread at this point last years was probably 20 pages... This year, it's 4...

I think we had a similar start the year we drafted Mauer at 1 overall. 

First time checking in all year, hope you'll have me . As others have mentioned, the brilliance of the team this year has kept me off the draft radar, but as always I'm excited to follow along here and this evening.

I know the 1993 Phillies picked 4th, with the best record in MLB at the time of the draft.

 

I found that by looking at a list of the biggest single season winning percentage improvements:

That led me to suspect the 1993 Giants, but they only had the second best record on draft day and picked 6th.

 

Some others were close: 2001 Twins (2nd best record behind only the 116 Mariners, and picked 1st overall), 2015 Astros (virtual tie for 2nd best record -- with the Twins! -- and picked 2nd overall), 2008 Rays (4th best record, picked 1st overall).

I can't either, but it's crazy how teams are valuing prospects and cheap, affordable talent these days.

Having seen a lot of the prep players and having the Wahoos with the Twins I would like to see them take two out of the cluster of Rece Hinds, Gunnar Henderson, and Maurice Hampton.

As a rough approximation, Fangraph has rated Jhoan Duran (45FV) similar to draft prospects in the 13 - 43 range. And I think Duran is equal to a pending free-agent late inning reliever or mid-rotation starter. Certainly in the ballpark. So I think you are valuing it about right.

My less-than-totally-informed preference is Langeliers from Baylor. His defense is already more than good enough for MLB, and it seems like his bat has come on very strong since his hand has had some time to heal.

Langeliers had 11 runs batted in on Saturday. I think he hit 3 homers in that game. I hope he is there for pick 13 in the first round.

I would like to see a high ceiling college pitcher taken, granted I'm nowhere near a draft expert.  There is a reason I'm commenting here on TD rather than whispering my pick into Falvey's ear!

Unless someone unexpectedly slips in the draft, my guess for the Twins pick at #13 is Stott with the secondary option being Langeliers. If those 2 are off the board I suspect a guy like Manoah will be available.
