  • 2016 Chattanooga Lookouts Roster Revealed

    Jeremy Nygaard

The Chattanooga Lookouts announced their 2016 Opening Day roster today. The Lookouts, who began an affiliation with the Twins in 2015, are looking to defend their Southern League Championship. In their first year with the Twins, Chattanooga went 76-61 in the regular season and beat Biloxi 3-2 in the best-of-five championship series.

Despite sending many of last year’s stars to Rochester and/or the parent club, the Lookouts will have another star-studded roster - though not to last year’s caliber - that includes many of the organization’s top-rated relief pitchers.

    THE COACHING STAFF

Fans have been spoiled by Doug Mientkiewicz, who enters his fourth year managing in the Twins system. Mientkiewicz has led his team to the playoffs in all three of his seasons, including a Florida State League Championship with Fort Myers in 2014 and a Southern League Championship last year in his first season in Chattanooga. Mientkiewicz remains best known for the seven years he spent with the Minnesota Twins (1998-2004). Tommy Watkins joins the Lookouts as the hitting coach after spending the previous six years in the same capacity in Cedar Rapids. Ivan Arteaga has been working with Twins pitchers since 2001. He will begin his first year in Chattanooga after bouncing between Fort Myers and Cedar Rapids the previous three years. He’ll have the opportunity to work with some pitchers for the third consecutive season.

    THE ROSTER

*Spent time with Lookouts in 2015

Last year’s roster included top offensive prospects such as Miguel Sano, Byron Buxton, Max Kepler and Jorge Polanco. The pitching staff featured Jose Berrios and Tyler Duffey. Those names have all moved on, but there are still a number of highly regarded prospects, with a number of them being found in the bullpen.

    PROJECTED ROTATION (listed alphabetically):

    P DJ Baxendale*

    P Ryan Eades

    LP David Hurlbut*

    LP Brett Lee*

    P Aaron Slegers*

    P Jason Wheeler*

This sextet has a ton of AA experience, starting 70 games for the Lookouts last year. In fact, DJ Baxendale led the 2015 squad in both games started and innings pitched. David Hurlbut, who along with Jason Wheeler, appeared in AAA as well, led the team in wins (11). Brett Lee had the lowest ERA (3.10) and WHIP (1.192) of any of the returning starters. Aaron Slegers, the youngest of the six, joined the Lookouts for a half dozen starts late in the year. Ryan Eades will be the lone member of the rotation without AA experience.

    PROJECTED BULLPEN:

    P Jason Adam

    P Nick Burdi*

    P JT Chargois*

    LP Mason Melotakis

    P Brandon Peterson*

    P Jake Reed*

    LP Mike Strong

    P Marcus Walden

    LP Corey Williams*

    P Alex Wimmers*

Nick Burdi headlines this group of prospects, but it will be a couple of weeks (minimum) before he is throwing in games after coming down with some soreness in his right (throwing) forearm. JT Chargois is expected to assume the closer role, as he led the Lookouts with 11 saves last year. Mason Melotakis returns after missing 2015 due to Tommy John surgery. Jake Reed was demoted after struggling in his Chattanooga debut, but is back and ready to return to his dominant form after getting back on track in the Arizona Fall League. Former first-rounder Alex Wimmers is back in the bullpen after starting 18 games for the Lookouts and being second on the team in innings pitched (115.1). Wimmers was one of the last pitchers moved as pitchers were being sent down from the Twins roster.

    PROJECTED LINEUP:

    SS Engelb Vielma

    2B Levi Michael*

    RF Daniel Palka

    1B DJ Hicks*

    LF Travis Harrison*

    DH/C Mitch Garver

    C Stuart Turner*

    3B Niko Goodrum*

    CF Shannon Wilkerson*

    PROJECTED BENCH:

    C Carlos Paulino*

    C Jairo Rodriguez*

    3B Leonardo Reginatto

    OF Zack Granite

    OF Joe Maloney

    INF Aderlling Mejia* (DL)

All eyes - at least early - will be on the powerful bat of Daniel Palka. Can he put balls in the seat like Adam Brett Walker did last year? Engelb Vielma, the youngest position player by nearly two years, could play shortstop right now for the Twins, but will he hit enough? Stuart Turner and Mitch Garver, who teamed up in the Arizona Fall League, will be professional teammates for the first time for a Twins affiliate. It will be interesting to see not only how they split up time behind the plate, but also additional at-bats, whether that be at DH or 1B, potentially. The experience of Levi Michael, Niko Goodrum, DJ Hicks and Travis Harrison will be leaned upon heavily. How many league titles have those guys won?

    THE PROSPECTS

Another college player #1 pick now in the bullpen, and still in AA. Good luck Alex Wimmers. And yet another #1 and college player pick, Levi Michael, still in AA ball might need some luck, too.

Looking forward with high hopes to see what Daniel Palka and Engelb Vielma do.

Great write up!  How concerning is Burdi's injury?

Team doesn't seem terribly concerned about it. A lot of pitchers go through a "dead arm" period late in spring training and just need a little time. Hopefully that's all this is.

Is it just me, or does it seem like half this roster is on a precipice of prospect oblivion vs major step ahead? I'm not saying it's a bad roster at all. I like Vielma. I like Turner and Garver. The bullpen is absolately loaded. But fair or not, it seems like Harrison, Michael, Goodrum, Wimmer and probably a few others, have either lost some of their shine, or have age or past injury factors clouding their potential.

Anybody else notice the similarity of Jake Reed's stuff to Matt Guerrier's? Same kind of sweeping movement, very hard for hitters to follow with their bats. Guerrier had more of a skimming stones sling to his delivery, but I see a lot of the same movement from pitch to pitch. Nothing straight, always bending.

If Casey Fein continues to struggle, I wouldn't mind seeing Reed get a cuppa in a month or so.

I'm guessing you could got through any roster at any level for any organization and have a few guys from each of those categories.

Wimmers and Goodrum can become free agents at the end of the year, so it's certainly big for them if they want the Twins to bring them back (add to the 40 man roster), or if they want other organizations to be interested.

The rest have time, but it's big for all of them on different levels.

I don't see it, but others may agree... I see Guerrier as having a very smooth delivery and great control. He had some movement but nothing like the movement Reed gets. But Reed right now struggles to control and command his pitches and throws 2-3 mph harder than Guerrier at his peak.

Unlike last year, there is no player who you can count on to be effective.  Instead its  full of question marks

Will Palka show his power during games?

    Will Harrison finally break out?

Will Vielma hit the ball out of the infield?

Will Eades live up to his draft position?

Will Michael stay healthy and can he play anything except for 2B?

    Can Garver play serviceable catcher?

    Can Turner hit?

    Will Goodrum harness his tools?

    Will Wimmers be effective?

Can Chargois, Melotakis & Burdi stay healthy?

    Is Peterson legit?

If the answer is "yes" to 50% of these questions, this team is on its way to another good season and another crop of prospects is about to be clamerouring for playing time with the Twins.

If not, the cupboard is about to be pretty bare.

The Lookouts fans should be excited about this team, as there's much talent here to draw interest.  I was really impressed with Vielma this spring and the fans may never see another SS with that kind of defensive talent. Maybe with a year with Tommy Watkins will help him on the offense side. Palka can leave the park at any time, and should roll up a lot of rbi. I'm hoping Wimmers can get back on a roll, as he has in the past and have a good year. Maybe the pen will work for him. Doug coaches like every game is the WS, so these guys that haven't played for him are in for a treat. Should be a good season in Chattanooga

Ii think this is more of a "normal" AA team. Full of question marks and yet plenty of talent. After last year's opening day Chaattanooga roster, most will look pretty pedestrian and full of question marks.

At the same time, I don't think it's real alarming because of the youth already in MLB and at AAA. May just be looking for a couple of reliable bullpen arms, a little depth in SP, and utility infielders, outfielders... backup catching options. Etc.

I was under the impression that a minor leaguer became a free agent after six years. Noticed that Alex Wimmers is starting his 7th season (first year 2010). What's the ruling on this? Am I missing something? Does his first short season in his draft year not count?

The season a player is drafted in is less than 90 days, so it doesn't count towards free agency. Wimmers will be a free agent after the season.

Ahh, okay. Thought it had to be something like that.

I was able to watch four Lookouts games last April 30-May 3. It was great! Got to see Buxton, Sano, Duffey and Rosario before they joined the Twins. Very nice park – very close to the action – not much foul ground near home plate.

Hope to go again sometime this year.
