  • What We Know About the Twins and Dansby Swanson

Dansby Swanson might turn into the Twins’ backup option if Carlos Correa signs with another club. Here’s the latest on Minnesota’s pursuit of Swanson.

Minnesota’s offseason focus has been re-signing Carlos Correa to a long-term contract. However, the team has kept other options open, including pivoting to other free-agent shortstops, including Dansby Swanson. Swanson is time to multiple teams, so let’s review what the Twins have done recently.

Aaron Gleeman of the Athletic reported that the Twins met with Swanson over video conference during the recently completed MLB Winter Meetings. Swanson could not attend the meetings in person because he married US Women’s Soccer player Mallory Pugh on Saturday. It’s clear that Minnesota is trying to keep as many options as possible open as they pursue a shortstop.

Besides the Twins, four other clubs have shown interest in Swanson, including the Cubs, Cardinals, Red Sox, and Braves. The Cubs are in an interesting spot as a rebuilding team but can use a player of Swanson’s caliber. Boston missed out on re-signing Xander Bogaerts as he was offered a significantly higher contract from the Padres. Swanson would upgrade the current shortstop options in St. Louis, but signing Willson Contreras might limit their spending. The Braves would like to keep Swanson if the deal makes sense for the team and the player.

Swanson is coming off his best MLB season, as he posted a 5.7 WAR. In 162 games, he hit .277/.329/.447 (.776) with a 115 OPS+ to go along with 32 doubles and 25 home runs. He was a first-time All-Star, won the NL Gold Glove at shortstop, and finished 12th in the MVP voting. Swanson’s 2022 numbers boosted his career totals as he entered last season with a 90 OPS+. However, he has averaged over 32 doubles and 25 home runs in the last two seasons.

Free agent deals have been massive this winter, and there is no guarantee the Twins will want to pay Swanson what he is expected to earn. Philadelphia signed Trea Turner to a $300 million deal, while Xander Bogaerts received $280 million even though he is older than Swanson. Would the Twins be willing to go that high to acquire Swanson?

Correa and Swanson will be compared because they are the top free agents left on the market. Swanson is seven months older than Correa. Over the last three seasons, he has hit more home runs and stolen 32 more bases than Correa. Swanson has been healthier recently, as he has only missed 39 games over the last four seasons. That includes just two missed games over the last three seasons.

Both Correa and Swanson provide significant positive value on the defensive side of the ball. Swanson won the National League Gold Glove and finished third among NL shortstops in SABR’s SDI. Correa won the Platinum Glove in 2021, but his defensive numbers took a hit last season as he ranked 9th among AL shortstops in SDI. His Outs Above Average ranked in the 97th percentile in 2021 and dropped to the 18th percentile with the Twins. Could that be a sign that Swanson sticks at shortstop longer than Correa?

The Twins remain focused on Correa, but Swanson is also an All-Star caliber player that has put it all together over the last few seasons. Do you believe the Twins are interested in Swanson? Leave a COMMENT and start the discussion.

I believe that meeting with Swanson could be more than just a negotiating maneuver. I also believe there is much more than the 4 teams that you mentioned. I also believe that MN isn't on his list of places he wants to go.

MN is hot to sign Correa because what he brings to the table and his rapport with Twins. Swanson doesn't have this. Should MN enter the bidding war for Swanson if Correa doesn't sign with us & sign him to a big contract? My vote is no. Personally I believe Swanson will sign before Correa anyway.

The Twins need to just stop pretending. Make the best possible offer you can to Correa and MOVE ON! This happened last year when we stopped everything in order to sign Buxton (who was still under contract and not going ANYWHERE) and that allowed us to miss out on everyone else who could possibly help us be competitive. Including Rodon LAST YEAR!

Make an offer, then MOVE ON! This team has a lot of needs!!!

It's not my money, so in a vacuum, if you miss out on Carols, I'd be fine with Dansy.  He definitely would be a big asset at one of the most important positions on the diamond.

HOWEVER, knowing how the Twins operate, that contract would "limit" them from improving in the future...and I don't think Swanson moves the needle enough to make it worthwhile.

Swanson had a career year in a contract year. A one year contract would be just fine.  Not many middle infielders continue to produce past 33. Jeter was great until 35.  I really can’t for the long term see them signing anybody for what Boras will demand

Near the end of the 2022 season, I thought maybe that the Twins could get Swanson for significantly less than Correa, but now I am no longer so sure of that.  Either player would be nice, but Carlos has built-in we-know-him-already appeal, and he is a significant presence on and off the field.  The team already likes him.  And I think he's a better fit (and he's more likely to sign a contract to be in Minnesota).

Still, neither player will come cheaply, and it's hard to imagine the Twins Organization paying high-price extended salaries for either of them.  That said, I suspect that they have made a pretty good offer already for Correa, and I doubt that--beyond tweaking the specifics of it much further (opt outs, performance incentives, etc.)--their offer will change or increase much.  So, it comes down to what the other teams offer him--and how long the Twins are willing to wait on him before they have to make other offers.

Correa is a franchise leader type of player, Swanson isn't. I really hope the Twins don't offer this guy $250+ million.

Swanson wouldn't cost 250M even on a 10 year deal. Odds are he crawls back to Atlanta on a 1 year deal and tests the market next season.

Honestly I can't see him signing anywhere besides Atlanta. But we will see.

Swanson should only be a plan B, and a distant one at that. Per the last Gleeman and the Geek podcast he’s in no rush to sign anywhere. Marriage and a honeymoon will do that to a person.

    Yep that is exactly right.

I prefer Lewis and Lee long term. Much less expensive and that money can be used elsewhere. But, we need a stop gap until Lewis is ready mid season, Maybe that's why they traded for Kyle Farmer ..

My fellow Twins fans are always so adorable this time of year.

With that being said, I'll be the bad guy here and say the obvious part out loud.  Correa is not signing with the Twins.  Swanson is not signing with the Twins.  The Twins already signed their free agent SS and I'm guessing most of us have already forgotten about him.

So let me remind everyone of his existence - Kyle Farmer will be the opening day starting SS.  Sorry guys.

If you're a decades long Twins fan then deep down you already knew that... but it's always fun and exciting to dream of having a favorite team owned by a family who cared about winning and having fun over turning a $2-3 million dollar profit to stack on top of the billions they already have.  But we don't have that and we never did.  The Pohlads are rich for a reason, they hoard profits and generational wealth and always look to spend the bare minimums.  They can never have "too much" money and will always want more and more money in their coffers.   And as long as we Twins fans silently accept and allow them to do the bare minimums that's all we're ever going to get out of the Twins.

    Face it

twins won’t pay that for either one of the shortstops.  Time to bring in the young talent and build with them.  It’s the every year dream of Twins fans to get some top talent, but we always over pay for old players on the downward slope

They really have to go all in on Swanson...Lewis will never be an elite ss, and Lee is light years away if he even has a chance to be. Getting Vasquez was a good move. The next pressing need is ss, not the rotation or the bullpen. If the twins succeed in 2023 the trainer may have to be the team mvp.
