  • Twins Offseason Trade Target: David Price

    Cody Christie

Minnesota might have to get a little creative if the club fails to sign one of the top free agent pitchers. Gerrit Cole already signed a record-breaking free agent deal with the Yankees, which has left teams like the Dodgers and the Angels scrambling for other arms. If the Twins can’t land a free agent starter, plan B could be to look for a trade target.

David Price is entering the fifth year of his seven-year, $217 million deal. In each of the next three seasons, he is guaranteed to make $32 million and he will be in his age-36 season at the end of the deal. The left-handed hurler has pitched over 2000 career innings, but he hasn’t had over 200 innings since the 2016 campaign.

Since 2016, Price has averaged 119 innings with a 3.75 ERA and 1.20 WHIP. Last season, he posted a career high 10.7 SO/9, but it also came an increase in his BB/9 from under 8.0 to 9.1. Throughout his Red Sox tenure, there have been some health issues, but he has been able to post a 118 ERA+ with 609 strikeouts in 588 innings.

Price is still a very good pitcher even if he isn’t the pitcher many fans will remember from when he was in contention for multiple Cy Youngs. His fastball is down a couple miles per hour from his career average (91.9 mph compared to 93.9 mph), but he can still top out at over 95 mph. This speed drop has meant he relies more on his change-up which he used 10% more than his career average last season.

Price might still have some left in the tank. Since 2017, he is one of only 29 starters that have topped 350 innings with a strikeout-to-walk ratio over 3.00 and an ERA+ better than 110. There’s no guarantee that he will be able to keep up this pace over the next handful of seasons, but he has already shown the ability to adjust his pitching by relying more on his change-up.

It’s no secret that Boston is trying to dump salary this off-season in an attempt to get under the luxury tax line. This will mean trading some of their more expensive players like Mookie Betts, JD Martinez, and/or Price. Betts could likely bring back a haul, but the 2018 MVP seems more likely to stick in Boston to lead their current core players.

There are a few things Boston could do to make a deal happen. With the hefty amount remaining on Price’s deal, the Red Sox could agree to pay some of the remaining cost. Taking on a player with a higher salary would also be an option, but that wouldn’t help Boston to cut salary. The Red Sox could include another valuable piece to entice a trading team to take on more salary.

If you were the Twins would you trade for Price? How much salary do you think the club would be willing to absorb? Leave a COMMENT and start the discussion.

I thought April Fools Day was in April. Please get off this free agent / trade kick as a miracle cure for a 101 win team. Angels have just sealed their doom by signing Rendon (I thought Pujols was the answer; where did that get them?)

Falvine said yesterday that they are still pursuing the FA route first. As long as Bumgarner, Ryu and Keuchel are still out there that is where they should be concentrating. If someone beats them to Price, then oh well.

I suspect present internal options will be relied upon quite heavily this season. The FA SP's are dropping like flies, Porcello is now a Met.

I'd pass. Boston also only has 1 prospect in the top 100 they could add to sweeten the deal.... No reason to alleviate them of their problem unless they're going to add at least a good prospect to the deal.

I might take Matt Barnes in lieu of a prospect

If Boston is doing a quasi rebuild, he's not going to them much good with only two years of control left.

The idea of Price and Benintendi would intrigue me greatly if I were the Twins FO. There's already talk of them moving Rosario, and plugging Benintendi into left field to replace him would be great for our short term outlook. If Eddie and some prospects bring back some solid pitching our rotation is set. Then once Kiriloff, Larnach, or whoever is ready we can move Benintendi for an even better return than Eddie brings. I kind of like this idea.

FYI, Price's Hits/9 went up to 9.1 from 7.7, not his BB.

I'm interested in price and frankly I'm not worried about taking on the salary. I'd rather take the whole salary right now and give up a lesser prospect and plug him in to the top of the rotation. The only issue with Price is health. The bWAR for Price in the Boston years is 3.0, 1.6, 4.4, 1.8. FIP suggests he was a little unlucky last year so I'm not panicking over the increase in WHIP. If you feel confident in his overall health and your team's ability to manage and coach him, I'd be happy to grab him in a salary dump.

Generally this board has been in favor of signing Madison Bumgarner this offseason; it's important to realize that Price has been almost exactly as valuable over the last three years, and while Price is older he only has 150 more innings on his arm. If the Twins can't make it happen with a guy like Bumgarner, Price would be a fine alternative and the money really shouldn't be an issue. There's an assumption of risk, but it's also only 3 years remaining on the deal, making it a palatable one IMHO.

Price, Berrios, Odorizzi, Pineda and one of Thorpe/Dobnak/Graterol/Smeltzer is undoubtedly an improved rotation from last year, and if Graterol or Thorpe breaks out? You're off to the races.

I'd definitely take Bumgarner or Ryu over trading for Price; both will cost less, both are at least slightly more likely to have a really strong season next year, and there's no other trade cost with them. But as an alternative Price works just fine. (so does Darvish)

32 mill a year for someone that "might still have some left in the tank"? No thanks.

It would have to be something like the Zack Cozart deal, only way bigger. Their pipeline blows, so they'd probably have to send a couple guys and cover at least 10 mill a year.

If you're willing to consider Price at 32-million per year why settle for 2nd best??  Chris Sale should be the target.  He's much more talented than Price and the cost is relatively the same except that Sale is under contract for 3 more years.  If you're going to make a trade like this you go for somebody head and shoulders above what's available on the FA market.  You go for somebody who will be your #1 and you can have confidence he can shut down ANY lineup.  Be that the Yankees, Houston, the Dodgers, whoever.  Who here on Twins Daily would be concerned that we would have Chris Sale pitching with a trip to the World Series or a Championship on the line ?  I would still have "concerns" if the guy we were leaning the most on was Berrios, Mad-Bum, Ryu, David Price, Odorizzi.  But Chris Sale ??  Give me some Chris Sale.  Boston is desperate to keep Mookie.  They MUST keep JD Martinez.  Make a deal for Sale.

Sale is on the decline and is going to need to adjust. His velocity is down in a big way so he’s not actually CHRIS SALE. Is the latter version of that guy. So is Bumgarner.

If you are looking for brand name status with decent quality you overpay for it. I would actually prefer a guy on the rise without the name that elevates the price tag

    Yes please.

If it was Price and Benintendi, I might even consider keeping Rosario and then try to flip the cheaper, more controllable and bigger named Benintendi for an even bigger pitching prize.

Agreed. If I can get Price, and trade howeveryouspellhisname......I probably do that. Maybe.

I'm quite nervous about his elbow, so I'd want him to be surrounded by three guys I trusted (which he would be THIS year).

Yes, even though I still like the idea that Price still has a shot to lead the rotation, the potential of that second piece being a rotation upgrade is equally if not more exciting.

Which, maybe you just cut out a step and take the underrated Eduardo Rodriguez instead. He was really good last year.

Guys you might want to check Price’s splits against the NYY. That is most likely the team we will need to get past and we can never win a damn game against them. Getting Price is like a cruel joke.

The Marlins beat a world class Yankees team in 2003 to win the WS with Josh Beckett, Carl Pavano and AJ Burnett. None of those guys would have been called “aces” in December of 2002. They were young guys on the rise.

We need more of that as opposed to throwing money at guys who made their mark already and are on the decline. Houston made a great deal to get Cole. This is what we need to do and it has involve trading off players/prospects. No one said it was easy, but trading for Price is really silly if we want to get someplace in the postseason. He’s awful against the Yankees. Look it up

So, what player that is available has been great against the Yankees?

So, what player that is available has been great against the Yankees?

That isn’t the point. Give me someone that isn’t completely horrendous against them. His numbers against them are THAT bad. I’m not scouring the market for guys who are Yankee killers. I do, however, want to know who SUCKS against them and if anyone ever has, it’s David Price.

So he can keep losing to the Yankees someplace else

Question: Does the Mets signing Wacha and Porcello make DeGrom or Thor remotely available?

Not if the Mets are trying to win. And, they played in the best division in the game, and played well last year. No way they should be dealing one of those guys.

If the Twins don't want to give MadBum $20+ million a year, why on earth would they trade for washed up, injury prone David Price and pay even more salary for him?

    Makes zero sense IMO.

For one you're only on the hook for three years with Price instead of 5 years for Bumgarner.

Also, despite Price's warts, he's been better than Bumgarner each of the last three seasons. I also have significant concerns that Bumgarner will be able to even be league average in terms of strikeout percentage upon a move to the AL. Tom's piece the other day has me concerned it's going to drop much more significantly than other pitchers making the league switch.

Price averaged 5 innings per start last year. Unless Boston is eating 2/3 of that contract, no thanks.

League average was only 5.18 innings (that's less than five and one-third). I don't think averaging 5 is particularly meaningful anymore, by itself. (His average performance in those 5 is probably more important, plus the other factors -- age, health, salary, etc.)
