  • Twins Close To Acquiring LHP Jaime Garcia?

    Seth Stohs

Update Friday 4:44 - It's now been about 24 hours since Ken Rosenthal first tweeted that the Twins were close to acquiring Jaime Garcia. As things sit right now, Garcia is set to start for Atlanta and the trade talks are on hold as other teams are now involved. This has been very interesting, with several twists and turns. It will be nice to see it resolved, whatever that means. As fans, however, it is nice to know that the Twins front office is being aggressive and pursuing players as buyers at this time.

    --------------------------------------

Ken Rosenthal was first to report that the Minnesota Twins are close to acquiring veteran LHP Jaime Garcia from the Atlanta Braves.

Recently Rhett Bollinger tweeted that the Twins will trade a minor leaguer to the Braves to complete the deal. Jon Heyman has confirmed that it is a one-for-one deal.

As of midnight Thursday night/Friday morning, the deal was not complete, but most seem to believe that it will still happen.

As the deal becomes final and we learn more about the specifics, we will update this article.

The 31-year-old Garcia debuted with the St. Louis Cardinals in 2008. He stayed in that organization through the 2016 season when he was traded.

Last offseason, he was traded to Atlanta in exchange for three minor leaguers.

In 17 starts and 106 innings, Garcia is 3-7 with a 4.33 ERA and a 1.33 WHIP. He has walked 40 and struck out 81.

While the front office has said that it wasn't interested in trading for rentals, Garcia is in the final season of a six year, $50 million deal. He is making $12 million this season. He likely has about $4 million remaining on the deal.

Per Mike Berardino (or a source of his) it's possible the trade won't be completed until Friday.

As Thursday turns into Friday, the deal has still not been finalized, though most still believe that it will happen.

    Check back for updates.

It has not been announced as a PTBNL. The trade just hasn't been announced yet.

I do agree it won't be a "top prospect" but it will be interesting to see who it is.

It will definitely be someone most of us are familiar with. A solid depth piece.

    Garcia has decent value.

Hopefully the Twins are taking on 100% of what's left on his contract, I don't see why they wouldn't, in order to soften the return. But I'm sure it will hurt, the Braves aren't just giving him away.

My assumption is whoever is going to Atlanta will be someone Falvine is not enamored with. Someone they don't believe will reach their potential.

6.2 innings per start this year with a 1.3 WHIP and 4.3 ERA?!  This is exactly what we need as  a#4/5 starter and when you compare this to 3-4 innings per start with an 8-9 ERA…this is VERY helpful.

BUT, we need to see the price of course.

One for one makes me worried that this is going to be a higher ranking prospect than we would like to see… (hopefully more 15-20 than 11-15….anything higher than 20 is fantastic)

Maybe they are getting salary relief on Hughes with him out for the season. That could lead to them having a way to convince ownership that it is worth a salary dump trade by the braves as they can take it on

Per LEN we might be getting a minor leaguer back as well so maybe the cost is someone in our 15-25 prospect rankings (per pipeline, those guys would be Javier, Thorpe, Burdi, Hildenberger, Reed, Melotakis, Granite, Baddoo, Miranda, Ynoa. Melo was already available so it's not him. Burdi is injured, Hildenberger and Granite are in the majors, Javier and Thorpe would cause this website to burn down. Ynoa, Miranda and Baddoo are too young to get rid of yet. Reed?

lol, how could it possibly be someone that "most of us" on twins daily AREN'T familiar with? He'd have to be like the Twins 50th ranked prospect or something.

That's the point right? People are going to be upset.

Palka (#13) could be a good guess too.

I think this is a good move.  Jaime has posted a positive WAR in every season except his rookie season.  Jaime is 31 and his fastball is being clocked his highest ever this year (granted, only 91.5 mph).  I guarantee the Twins prospect will be a player we are quite familiar with, but it's not going to be an A-grade or even B-grade prospect.  I'd expect it's someone between 10-25 on the Twins top prospect list.

Travis Bowyer and Billy Bullock come to mind at a time like this. Don't even remember who they went for.

I thought it was bowyer and Scott Tyler for Luis Castillo

on mlbtraderumors, someone was posting that Brave fans are hearing that it's Blankenhorn.

He's hitting .233/.341/.410 in Cedar Rapids but is currently our #7 prospect, per pipeline (although they haven't done a mid-season update yet).
