  • Twins Close To Acquiring LHP Jaime Garcia?

    Seth Stohs

Update Friday 4:44 - It's now been about 24 hours since Ken Rosenthal first tweeted that the Twins were close to acquiring Jaime Garcia. As things sit right now, Garcia is set to start for Atlanta and the trade talks are on hold as other teams are now involved. This has been very interesting, with several twists and turns. It will be nice to see it resolved, whatever that means. As fans, however, it is nice to know that the Twins front office is being aggressive and pursuing players as buyers at this time.

    --------------------------------------

Ken Rosenthal was first to report that the Minnesota Twins are close to acquiring veteran LHP Jaime Garcia from the Atlanta Braves.

Recently Rhett Bollinger tweeted that the Twins will trade a minor leaguer to the Braves to complete the deal. Jon Heyman has confirmed that it is a one-for-one deal.

As of midnight Thursday night/Friday morning, the deal was not complete, but most seem to believe that it will still happen.

As the deal becomes final and we learn more about the specifics, we will update this article.

The 31-year-old Garcia debuted with the St. Louis Cardinals in 2008. He stayed in that organization through the 2016 season when he was traded.

Last offseason, he was traded to Atlanta in exchange for three minor leaguers.

In 17 starts and 106 innings, Garcia is 3-7 with a 4.33 ERA and a 1.33 WHIP. He has walked 40 and struck out 81.

While the front office has said that it wasn't interested in trading for rentals, Garcia is in the final season of a six year, $50 million deal. He is making $12 million this season. He likely has about $4 million remaining on the deal.

Per Mike Berardino (or a source of his) it's possible the trade won't be completed until Friday.

As Thursday turns into Friday, the deal has still not been finalized, though most still believe that it will happen.

    Check back for updates.

Looking at the Braves top 30, they seem pretty deep with pitching prospects and Sickles agrees with this. I still think the Braves are wanting somebody close to MLB ready because of the new stadium they're in. They seem short on outfield prospects and 3rd base. Wouldn't surprise me they are looking for a Granite or Jorge or combo that may include a relief prospect.

I'm guessing Wade or Granite, personally. It fits their needs, I think. Garver is also likely.

I think they want someone close to the majors, given where they are in the process, and I don't think they want more pitchers.

Not so fast gang.  Reports are that the deal may fall through.  "The Braves are reportedly talking to other teams about Jaime Garcia; Twins deal not complete."

I'd be fine with Wade. I think he's going to be a solid MLB player, but the Twins have most of the outfield locked up with Buxton and Kepler (I'm not convinced with Rosario).  I also don't think the Twins can afford to trade any pitching prospect for a rental at this point.

Someone on the Braves chat site said they had some Twins related source that claimed it was a catcher.

I will be very disappointed if it is Garver. I know a lot of folks are content with Gimenez's .200 BA, as he is an interesting player, but Garver has an OPS of .912 this year. He has been hitting well all year. He's also played some 1B and OF.

If he were primarily an outfielder with those stats there are several posters here who would have spent some energy insisting that Rosario be replaced by him.

Navarretto was the guy pulled last night. I'd be perfectly fine if it was him. I'm not sure the Twins should be trading catchers, but that's a different issue.

That would be great, but I doubt he has much value despite the very good defense.

Nope, just an assumption based on watching baseball for 30 years. Established starters don't go for nothing, nor should they.

Atlanta essentially gave up nothing to get Garcia

Mark Feinsand, mlb.com, is reporting that other teams are starting to get involved in Garcia talks.

Well, if that's the case, how much value do the Braves place on the Twins farm system compared to others and how high are they trying to drive up the price. Personally, the highest I'd go is a Wade, Burdi combo type. Not excited about giving up Granite

He was an HS draftee too, so he's young (22), a good defender, and young for his league. Interestingly enough, his bat was considered to be his most promising asset. Definitely a prospect in that sense, but not one that I see the Twins really missing so to speak either. Garver should be in long term plans, and Rortvedt has a very high ceiling. JRM would certainly be one I'd jettison as well.

Personally though, JRM or Navaretto seems a bit too lite of a return, especially if Atlanta is sending someone back as well. I just don't see it being either of them, and that is a bit more concerning to me.

Personally I am fine if they don't get this done.  I don't want them to overpay for a guy that they control for three months for a team that is highly unlikely WS bound.  Let another team overpay.

Well, Levine said just a couple weeks ago that he wasn't inclined to spend "lavishly" for short term assets, which is what Garcia would be. So I wouldn't fret about an overpay.

It is just that when other teams get involved then bidding wars can start and suddenly getting the guy you want becomes more important than the price.  I hope that isn't the case in this deal.

One question has already been answered even if this trade doesn't go through. The Twins will indeed pick up salary in a trade.

Trading for a rental doesn't exactly go against what Falvey/Levine said earlier this month. They aren't emptying the farm system on this trade. That is the rental they were talking about. They are removing one of Colon/Gibson (it's Colon) from the rotation and that is an absolutely necessary step for any .500 or better team. And it is using lesser prospects (not top prospects). Obviously they will have to send someone with potential in the deal.

Navaretto (or comically Turner) certainly aren't part of this deal. Navaretto has multiple years of <.600 OPS on his resume. That isn't decent in any definition.

Lamonte Wade seems reasonable to me. Good prospect but lacks upside (corner OF with below average power) and is a position of depth. Perhaps Blankenhorn. Granite would be an interesting case. Good time to sell high imo since he isn't this good (AAA numbers) although this would be steep just for Garcia. Garver would be frustrating since all he has done is hit at every level. Rortvedt also seems reasonable. He has upside but he is years away and most likely never makes the majors.

But at the end of the day I really hope this trade gets done for a top 15ish prospect since Garcia is a competent starter and replaces an ocean of diarrhea in at least one of the rotation spots.

And his ERA+ is exactly the league average of 100, and in virtually every statistical category he's in the bottom half to bottom third among the 36 qualifying NL pitchers.

See, it's easy to cherry pick numbers to support an opinion.

What is your opinion that you are trying to support?

Bottom third of 36 pitchers in a 15 team  means absolutely nothing given that the nl has used 127 starting pitchers By WAR he is 41. That looks better.  By any metric of pitchers starting 5 or mre games he is in the 40-50 range.  All any of it means is he has good days and bad ones, just like any league average pitcher.  1/3 of the games he stunk. 1/3 he was very good. That is better yhan the other 4/5 pitchers the Twins have thrown out there

It's poker time Falvine, if you had a fair deal on the line, and everyone was satisfied (not saying happy here), then a leak happens/"other parties are interested", don't increase your offer.....you call that bluff every time.

Incidentally, this sounds very familiar with the Dozier trade talks when all of the sudden other teams were interested (when likely only the Dodgers were)....
