  • Twins Claim LHP Adam Wilk From Mets

    Seth Stohs

Wednesday afternoon, the Twins announced that they have claimed left-handed starting pitcher Adam Wilk from the New York Mets. The move puts the Twins roster back at 40.

UPDATE: Following the announcement that the Twins game in Chicago on Wednesday night was postponed to August, the Twins announced that Drew Rucinski had been optioned to Rochester to make room for Wilk.

There is speculation, maybe an assumption, that he will start for the Twins on Saturday.

He made just one start for the Mets this season. He made five starts for the Mets AAA affiliate in Las Vegas where he went 2-3 with a 5.91 ERA.

Wilk is 29 years old. He made eight appearances for the Detroit Tigers between the 2011 and 2012 seasons. He did not pitch again in the big leagues until 2015 when he pitched two innings for the Angels. He spent 2013 in Korea.

His one start for the Mets was an "emergency" start on Sunday when he pitched in place of the suspended Matt Harvey. He gave up six runs (5 earned) on eight hits (including three homers) and a walk in 3.2 innings.

Maybe it's just me, but this feels like a move completely meant to be a stop-gap. Maybe it's one start on Saturday. Maybe it's a couple of starts before Jose Berrios, Adalberto Mejia or Kyle Gibson are ready to come back to the Twins.

I realize this guy's numbers are terrible and he probably won't be any good. But, he wasn't exactly handed any favors for his start last weekend as far as being rested.

"Wilk’s outing came under sub-optimal circumstances, to say the last, as Fred Kerber of the New York Post detailed. The lefty flew from Las Vegas to Albuquerque (with a stop in Denver) last Saturday, only to learn he was needed in the Majors, at which point he flew to Los Angeles and took a midnight flight to New York to start against the Marlins at 1pm."

A new market inefficiency has been found!

Then why send Gibson down? Gibson is bad, but IMO he's better than Wilk.

I never approved of the Wilk acquisition. I was just emphasizing the importance of waiting until Berrios is ready.

That's fine, but they could have let Mejia take the spot start.  They could have let Tepesch take the spot start.  They could have even gone with a bullpen game (yes I find the humor in that too).  It seems silly to bring a guy in with this sort of resume for that sort of purpose.

In which case the claim now makes even less sense.

You just gave up your waiver spot

    for

    wait for it

    Adam Wilk.

Just an open 40 man spot. That is easily fixed if they want to bring someone else on board.

fair. but this does say they aren't trying to win this year, doesn't it? Can we ever be honest about rebuilding here?

How would you feel if you were on the roster, and they made these decisions?

I don't think it would bother me a lot as a player. I'd trust in the plan. And, I don't think it tells us anything about their plans for 2017. They are thinking big picture, but with 120 games to play, I'm sure they're willing to adjust throughout the year.

What do you mean by gave up their waiver spot?

Does a team that makes a claim not go to the end of the list after doing so?  I honestly don't know.  I know it is set by record, but I guess I always thought it was fluid based on made claims.

Nope. Making a claim doesn't affect your waiver position.

I'd agree with this completely if there were a plan that was a bit more clear.  The moves last week seemed to indicate one thing and now this doesn't really fit into that.  It's an outlier move, which is what is confusing to me to begin with.  It doesn't show that they're trying to win now and it doesn't show that they're trying to get the future of the organization big league experience.  So what is it telling me?

Saw that Bernadino says WIlk NOT under consideration to start on Saturday. Now it gets interesting. He is here to replace someone in the bullpen. I'm guessing Pressly. This also raises the possibility that Berrios will start Saturday. According to Bernadino, still under discussion.

We were told a couple days ago, Berrios was not ready. If he's ready now, he was ready then....

Maybe the plan is more clear to the players. It doesn't need to be clear to us...

Article is updated with notes on Rucinski being sent down after the game, and the Twins saying that Wilk is considered a reliever by the team, not a starting option. Saturday starter could be Tepesch, Berrios or Mejia.

Rucinski never should have been called up.

That may very well be the case, and I hope that it is.  The news of Rucinski being optioned and Wilk not being considered for a start makes much more sense.  This is what I get for reacting to unconfirmed information.  That being said, I still would have liked a promotion from within over this.

That would be pretty amazing if after all this angst (myself included) it ends up being Berrios starting on Saturday over Tepesch, and then Mejia (or Gibson) when the next start is needed May 20.

Seems there is a split in the front office. As there should be. Start Berrios already.

Apparently the new front office's philosophy is to pick up cast-offs from other teams and hope they'll end up with some "diamonds in the rough." We were told for years that the young guys the Twins drafted 3-4 years ago would be studs. They've stock piled hard throwers who were supposed to be the Twins' future stars.

So instead, we choose a guy who was released from the Mets so they could start Tommy f-ing Malone?

This organization is a disgrace! The only saving grace will be that the team will be so awful no one will come to watch, and then maybe they can get serious about putting a decent product on the field.

At what point do we get to start judging the FO and their awesome pitching acumen?

At the point that the Twins are not competing.  As long as they are competing I will be giving them the benefit of the doubt.

What matters is the standings.  So far so good.

Wheeler is on the other line...says he wants to know what he needs to do to get a shot and would be happy to make an appearance on the 40 man roster.

I watched Wheeler pitch on Monday.

Horrible is a compliment for the way he was pitching...

Anyone else thinking the real problem here, ie, the "split in the FO" is concerning Justin Haley?

I mean after Sunday, how could Molitor bring him into a game with a straight face?

I have no love for Drew Rucinski but Justin Haley is not a major league pitcher right now.  Maybe he is still hurt.  Maybe he's simply rusty.  Maybe he simply isn't good.  But it seems to me that removing him from the active roster would have improved the roster more than removing Rucinski.  Rucinski actually got some MLB hitters out in his last stint.  The only hitter Haley retired was Deven Marrero, who I'm not sure qualifies as an actual MLB hitter.  He's certainly never hit MLB pitching.
