  • Twins 5, Tigers 7: Sanchez, Miranda, Urshela Home Runs Not Enough as Twins Lose on Memorial Day

    Nate Palmer

The Minnesota Twins looked to be on their way to win on Memorial Day after hitting three home runs. In the end, defensive miscues brought the Twins to a loss against the Tigers to open the road trip.

    Pregame Notes
Sunday was filled with the excitement of the return of Royce Lewis and his start in center field. Monday was kicked off with the news that he would be hitting the IL with a bruised knee after his collision with the outfield wall during Sunday’s game.

Jose Miranda got the call back to the Twins after being the move to make room for Lewis initially. There is certainly room to wonder whether or not Alex Kirilloff was more deserving of the spot on the Twins 26-man. Miranda’s handedness has helped him hang on to his spot on the MLB roster.

    Sanchez gets Twins going early
With plenty of Twins starters like Byron Buxton, Max Kepler, Carlos Correa, and Royce Lewish not in the lineup for various reasons, Gary Sanchez got the Twins offense going early in the second inning. The home run was his fifth of the season and his hardest-hit ball of the 2022 season, with an exit velocity of 113.2 mph and traveling 415 feet.

The Twins could have gotten more runs, but as has continued to be a trend, they struggled to get hits with runners on base. Trevor Larnach should have scored the second Twins run after a walk and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Larnach was then thrown out at third base while trying to advance after Gio Urshela grounded to Tigers shortstop Javier Baez. The attempt to advance by Larnach was likely the wrong read, and that misjudgment removed him from the bases when he would have likely scored on Jose Miranda’s single to center on the very next at-bat.

Miranda’s bat stays hot, glove goes cold
While the past 24 hours have been a roller coaster for Miranda after being sent down and then immediately recalled based on the events surrounding Lewis. The right-hander has remained hot at the plate. Monday afternoon, he got started with a single in front of the Tigers centerfielder, Hill.

The fireworks came in the fourth inning as Miranda hit his second major league home run to give the Twins a 3-1 lead.

While Miranda's bat had fans forgetting about Kirilloff, his glovework raised questions. Two defensive miscues directly lead to Tiger runs. First was a throw behind Joe Smith. The second came on the back end of a fantastic Gio Urshela play where Miranda may have needed to step off of first to grab an offline throw. A decision a more experienced first baseman may have been able to make.

Bundy manages hard hits but is undone by weak contact
Dylan Bundy has been a relatively steady force for the Twins in their starting rotation. Monday afternoon wasn’t an outing Bundy will likely want to remember. While he managed a barrage of the hard-hit ball (12 to be exact), the weak grounders and bloops seemed to undo him.

What may be the key to starts by Bundy is that he left the game with the Twins in a place to be able to win the game. He did manage that as he exited with the game tied at four runs a piece.

    Smith’s struggles continue
After pitching near-perfect baseball to begin the season, Joe Smith continued to unravel Monday. Smith was only able to make it 2/3 of an inning before leaving the game after giving up three hits, one earned run, and another run scored after a throwing error by Miranda. Smith has now given up a run in three out of his last four appearances after giving up no earned runs in every other appearance of 2022 before those four.

Former Twin Schoop with milestone hit
While 2022 hasn’t exactly been kind to the current Tiger and former Twin infielder, Jonathan Schoop was able to pick up the 1,000th hit of his career Monday afternoon. Schoop spent the 2019 season with the Twins. A season in which he hit 23 home runs and especially punished left-handed pitching.

    What’s Next?
The Twins will hope that the rest gained by some players on Monday will help with the doubleheader scheduled for Tuesday. In Game 1 the Twins will send Devin Smeltzer to the mound against right-hander Rony Garcia of the Tigers.

Then in game 2, the Twins look to send Cole Sands to the mound against lefty Joey Wentz. Hopefully, the Twins lineup can succeed against two arms with limited major league experience and right the ship after Monday's loss.

Frustrating loss.  Count me in the camp of patience wearing very thin with Bundy.  Yes, there was some weak contact, but several poorly located pitches in the 3 batter sequence when DET scored 2 runs to tie game at 3-3 after Miranda's HR gave Twins the lead.  I'm still a believer in Smith's ability to be a solid contributor in our pen.  If Sanchez had made a quicker tag on Schoop, Candelario never advances to second base.  Moreover, if Miranda makes an accurate throw (on a tough play) or holds onto the ball, imo, there's a decent chance Smith gets out of the inning unscathed.

I realize games like this will happen, but with a DH tomorrow and Kepler still unavailable, I have to ask the question to Rocco?  Why are BOTH Buxton and Correa out of the lineup today??  I will be shocked to see both play both games of the DH tomorrow.

1 more question: Any injury update on Winder?  Since Rocco hung him out to dry in OAK two weeks ago, I know he's been on IL with a shoulder impingement.

Agreed, Miranda needs to just hold onto that ball and not try to get too cute. As far as Correa and Buxton, Rocco strikes again.

Lots of mistakes by the young guys.  Got a feeling it is going to be a long couple weeks.  Hopefully Celestino will soon be back.  Expect Gordon is gonna have to play shortstop with Correa out.

Good to know that Correa was out due to Covid-19 protocols, there were a lot of assumption made about rest time.  It looks like they're just grinding right now severely undermanned.

They can't blunder on defense and win in that case.  They need to execute, get outs, and help their pitching staff out.  They didn't do that today - Garlick had a good shot at robbing a HR, Miranda botched two plays that should've ended innings, and they ran into a out.  Hopefully we can take two tomorrow.

Correa wasn't held out for covid reasons.

Agree they can't play defense like that and win.

The poor baserunning that's been present a lot this year also bit them today.

Well looks like Gordon will be our shortstop.  Inspite of many calling to cut ties with him and dealing him unnecessary.  Probably the same ones calling for Lewis to be called up to play any position.  I know hindsight is 20/20.  But, lots of short sighted takes on here.  He could have been filling in for Correa tomorrow.  Sometimes the loudest voices are the wrong ones.

i am one that is amongst others that are starting to wonder about all the days off for buxton and / or correa. i'm prone to injury as well but if i missed as many days or was given as maybe days off my co-workers would be getting tired of me. he's a great player but the team needs him in the field and at the plate. his average is awful right now. it's not going to get any better if you don't get the swings in.

Don't tell the game threads that.  It's a dumpster fire of loud, bad takes.

Correa was sent back to the team hotel with symptoms, they tested him, and he came back positive.  I hope he's back by the end of the week!

A sad game - if it were the only one it would be no big deal, but after KC, we cannot continue to give away the games against the bottom feeders.

I do not blame Miranda.  I do not excuse Bundy.  I do not understand the roster construction.

I really don't see what the FO sees in Cole Sands in regard to these spot starts.

He has been HORRIBLE even for St. Paul! 0-4, 7.23 ERA, 15 earned in 18.2 innings, average against of 3.11.

His very small MLB sample (4 innings) not much better. Is this our depth? This is all we got from the infamous pitching pipeline?

Agreed. I like Gordon more off the bench, not starting, but no other choices right now. Fingers crossed Gray and Ryan are back soon, and if so, it seems a good time for one of Bundy or Archer to move to the pen. Leaves the problem with #'s in rotation, but we haven't seen a quality start from either of them for some time, and probably should not expect its going to get any better. Maybe those two combo for 6 innings, but I dont trust them 2 times through a batting order at this point.  Maybe Sands can show something tomorrow. Smeltzer deserves a long look, he has earned a chance to stick around this time. Depth looks good one day, then an injury or two, and suddenly not so much. This has the makings of an ugly two week stretch.

Yes...he was sent back to hotel for covid testing.  Not exactly sure were you get your info.  But I would fire you're source.

I would think, just like today, Polanco may temporarily be moved over there. Unless there is some other reports that I missed that would impact that happening.

Very possible.  I am just thankfull we held onto Gordon as opposed to listing to the crowds wanting to DFA him.  He will be very helpful over the next couple weeks and long term

Whatever, at some point, when Buxton plays, he needs to hit the ball hard and make things happen.

Twins can't have him hovering around .200 again, striking out, popping out, making outs.

    It's been like a month.

Either he is or he isn't a guy who wins us games.

A hundred million can't flouder like this.

You know Buxton is only making 9 million this year right?

Gordon has been getting opportunity this year and he is poised for more opportunity in the immediate future. Gordon can help his major league career right here... right now. I'll be pulling for him.

Although... I'm not sure what you mean exactly by "Probably the same ones calling for Lewis to be called up to play any position".

Is it possible they are sitting Buxton so he won't hit the number of games or at  bats to get to his incentives?  I don't remember specifics, just that he needs a certain number of games or at bats to hit his max.   They are not playing him to his potential (seriously DH'ing him when he is the star center fielder).  Seems he is off at least every 3rd game?  He can't get on a roll or hot streak like this IMO.  All and all it is ridiculous.  I won't buy tickets again because part of the fun of the game is to see him on the bases or making the great plays in center field.  Just getting old that's all.

So the Twins were wrong for wanting one of their best offensive players back in the lineup? Positional versatility is now a negative? We know Lewis wasn't an injury risk at a physically demanding position like SS? Oh and they had to know Correa was going to test positive within days of recalling Lewis? Speaking of myopic takes...

Honestly no, not wrong.  Just an unfortunate happening.

You lumped Royce Lewis playing a different position to get back as quickly as possible in with "cut Nick Gordon." No idea why you'd do that, particularly if you agree his injury is simply unfortunate timing.

FWIW, the points I made previously are quite the opposite of myopic, they all take into account a view that stretches beyond the last 2 weeks or so.
