  • BREAKING: Carlos Correa's Contract with Giants in Doubt Amid Health Concerns

    Nick Nelson

Last week, everyone came to believe the Carlos Correa free agent derby was over when it was reported that the star shortstop had agreed to a $350 million deal with the San Francisco Giants.

On Tuesday, this was all thrown into doubt with Correa's introductory presser (and official signing) postponed over reported concerns in the shortstop's physical.

A report from the Associated Press on Tuesday afternoon indicates that San Francisco's official signing of Carlos Correa, and the corresponding introductory press conference, have been postponed over "a medical concern arose during the All-Star shortstop’s physical."

Few details are known at this point, but it's fair to say this is a significant development. Rarely do you see a prominent signing of this magnitude publicly stall out at this stage.

Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle reports that whatever issue emerged in Correa's physical, it is not a back issue, ruling out one area of the body that has affected the shortstop in the past.

The news of a medical issue being flagged is surprising to say the least given that nothing came up in last year's physical ahead of signing with the Twins, and Correa seemed to get through the 2022 season with a relatively clean bill of health. One wonders if the surgically repaired ankle that barked at him on at least one occasion this season could be involved. To be clear, this is pure speculation. But the only other known health issues experienced by Correa this past season were a bout with COVID and bone bruise in his thumb, neither of which would seem to pose any long-term risk.

What happens from here? That's anybody's guess. Perhaps this will prove to be a meaningless blip and further clarity will lead to the original deal being honored. (That seems unlikely now that we've reached this point.) Maybe Correa and the Giants will reconfigure the deal in a way that both sides are comfortable with.

Or, maybe, the door just opened for the Twins to re-enter the fray. It's not out of the question.

Visit back soon for more analysis and added details as they trickle in. At the moment, we don't know much, but we do know this: Correa has NOT signed with the Giants, and it's suddenly not clear he will.

Maybe it isn't physical but a chemical issue.  Privacy concerns won't be released so to speak but would be very interesting if he "accidentally" took something he shouldn't during his fall/winter workouts to get ready for next year.  He could then hang out the Tatis Jr and share stories on how they got caught.  Happy Holidays

Why would anyone even think that? I mean, Carlos Correa, the clubhouse leader, the guy with the great character, cheat? Really?

There could be a "chemical issue" that does not involve performance-enhancing drugs or cheating, for example testing positive for THC. I'm not sure if THC use is still proscribed in the current CBA but with marijuana becoming legal on a such a widespread basis I would expect that clause to be eliminated in the next agreement.

I don't think it will change anything, IMHO. If they were willing to go 13 years and break the bank, they're not backing out now.

Maybe SF was trying to get some insurance done on the contract and the medical threw a wrench into it. They'll probably iron it out or move along.

I highly doubt any conspiracy theories. First, I'm sure this was a very thorough examination. If a team is about to pay a player $350M I would expect nothing less. Second, if there's something significant that has arisen I'm sure everything is well documented. And I would expect that Boras has a physician on retainer to confirm any issue that may arise as the result of a physical. Everything on all sides will be completely above board. Nobody in this situation will be able to get away with any shenanigans.

I hope that's not true, because we still owe SF a good dose of shenanigans after the whole Sam Dyson debacle.

Wouldn't be the first time a physical discovered something previously undetected like a heart murmur of similar. And agree it might be more of a second look/opinion on a previous injury for insurance of the contract.

I'm sure it will amount to nothing and he will be signed shortly.

My read is that this reaching the media is significant.  Why damage the incoming star with this report/leak if it could be simply overcome? You can boo-hoo delaying a press conference/announcement for all kinds of reasons other than this.  SF may be laying the ground work to pull out.

True. Only one party would want to leak this.

But I suppose something was going to have to be said if there was going to be a delay in the actual signing.

This is the most plausible explanation. They almost certainly are going to insure the contract and the insurance company is going to have a much tighter view on what is acceptable.

If they didn't want this to leak, they could have blamed postponing the press conference on travel/weather etc. That is the only thing that makes you go hmm. Still probably a 95% chance the deal gets done.

Not sure travel/weather is a believable excuse 3 hrs before the press conference is set to start.

Glad it wasn't the Twins doctors who might have overlooked an issue. Or gambled it could be okay.

Or did the Twins doctor from last year miss this and we just got lucky. We do have a new head guy in this department this year and had so many injuries last year.

I am not sure it is really fair or appropriate to speculate on another human being's health condition.  This could be literally anything, from non-serious to life threatening.

We will know when we are allowed to know what can be disclosed.

The only thing that is fair to surmise is that it is significant enough to warrant cancelling the press conference and pause any contract signing while it is sorted out medically.

We need to show some class, even with the "Dior comment" and the fact that he chose to sign a much better contract with another team, which 99.999999% of us would have done in the same circumstances.

Didn’t even think about that. Wow, I guess it could be, but I hope not, Baseball does not need that.

On the other hand, once a cheater…..

Maybe the drs. had a hard time identifying the buzzer implanted below his shoulder.

Enough silliness - let’s just hope he’s ok and can continue his career.

Offer 11 years $313 Million.  First offer.  Last offer. Only offer.  Walk away if needed.

Not without knowing the absolute truth about what SF perceived the problem to be and getting the problem throughly checked out before offering anything. Due diligence, my friends.

Who knows what it is, but if it's serious enough to put his future ability to play in doubt, you can bet your a$$ they backing out (wonder how the Twins' fanbase would react if they ended back up with the Giant's sloppy seconds/damaged goods)

Not going to speculate what the problem is, or even if there is a problem. Question, can he opt back in to the Twins contract?

No, he can't. He had to officially opt out (file paperwork) by a certain date (5 days after the WS if I'm not mistaken). No take backs here.

I believe the answer is yes. Technically, Correa is still a FA. Nothing is actually signed yet, there is only an agreement in place. IF the delay was brought about due to something questionable physical and not just the insurance company wanting another look or more details...ankle, back, neck, heart question, etc...the Giants and Correa would then have the option of re-working the agreement.

So, in theory, the Giants might say 10-11 years and $300M. He and Boras could call up the Twins and see what they think. THEN, it would be up to the Twins, or any team for that matter, to look at the findings and decide what they'd be IN for. Again, just in theory, the Twins could feel the risk is worth the reward and say their offer is on the table, OR, even offer a bump.

Similar, but not quite exact, think about Rocker and the Mets. He was selected, a contract was agreed on, but there was a physical question there as well. The Mets offered a lower deal and Rocker decided not to sign. The obvious difference is Rocker wasn't a FA, and Correa is.

More than likely, this will only be a mild issue that the Giants want to look at again, and he will be cleared and signed. Still, it is an interesting situation.

The Twins knew $285 wasn’t going to work at the latest when Bogaerts and Turner agreed to terms (and probably when Seager and Lindor signed). Bogaerts and Turner agreed to deals over a week before Correa did yet the Twins never raised their offer, despite knowing it would not get the deal done.

Can’t see them raising it now.

Maybe the Twins made a lower offer (not going to call it a low-ball offer), knowing they would get out-bid by a bigger market, because they already had his medicals. I wouldn't think it would be a banned substance as he knew he would be taking a physical for whichever team he signed with.
