Jim Pohlad "Totally on Board" with re-signing Correa

Look at how the Vikings have changed their culture from the top. It has consistently been about building a winning organization from ownership down with the Vikings. With the Twins there is always a sense that the "baseball people" (read - not the owners because we pay someone to do that) should be financially responsible with offers. It's well documented that business comes before baseball in this organization, and the Pohlads have really never claimed otherwise. To think what Jim Pohlad says about a baseball move is giving him too much credit for baseball decisions he has farmed out.

Signing Correa won’t tie their hands. They have a lot of young players under control for several years. And they will be renegotiating their TV deal after next season. There is no reason to believe the next contract will be as low as it is currently. They could boost the payroll a little. They have room to sign BOTH Correa and Rodon. Without the shift, the SS role is going to be even more important. 

If they refuse to invest in an Ace and good #2 pitcher then nothing else matters!! They will be a .500 team with continued make shift pitching!!

I trust Pohlad about as far as I can throw my SUV.

Willson Contreras declined the qualifying offer from the Cubs.  The Twins need to go get this guy.

I have semi-reliable information the Twins have made an offer to Correa. I'm not going to report the number, that will be on the front page soon, but it's a solid fifth-place offer.

If it's a starting offer, it's pretty reasonable. If it's all the Twins offer, he's gone.

To be clear, if it's a starting point, it's an impressive offer. Better than I expected from this front office by a fair margin.

But if it's their only offer, it won't get it done.

i'd rather them make a reasonable offer and lose him than something utterly absurd that brings him back and restricts this team from other free agent acquisitions in the future, cause that's what it's gonna take to get him.  He'll probably end up a Dodger is my guess.

But thus far, the front office doesn't seem to approach a final number until about the middle of January at the earliest. Which of course is about three months after the fans sharpened their pitchforks.

I think they've realized they need to alter their approach, at least in this particular case. They need a shortstop - a good shortstop - and if they use their previous approach, they'll end up acquiring a left fielder in January and miss out on every good shortstop.

I think there is little chance they re-up with Sinclair/Bally's. The lack of distribution is killing them with fans and at the gate. And I don't see it changing.

It seems the most logical path forward is offering their games via streaming directly or through MLB with a package of games on local TV as well. Are they prepared for this? What will that mean revenue wise? A lot of unknowns.

I agree there are unknowns. But I can't imagine they go forth and don't up their revenue stream to some extent

That would be great if they know they have to change their approach. I mean, I want Correa back, but I'm also warming to the idea of the other shortstops, Bogaerts in particular. If Correa is planning on being the last to sign, then the Twins have to sign one of the others so as not risk ending up empty handed, in which case, the Twins offer at this point means nothing in the long run.

But, after not getting the offer he wanted last year, maybe Correa too plans on changing his approach and will sign early.

Edit: Another thought, if the Twins offer is good, but not good enough, AND it's being leaked, maybe they're just trying ring the dinner bell for the other shortstops who were already assumed to get less than Correa.

This was the quote I responded to. To think Jim Pohlad has any working knowledge of how things work with player negotiations is beyond generous.

If you are suggesting that over 13 years Jim has managed to not asborb "any working knowledge of player negotiations" is pretty incredible... especially when you consider that the "baseball people" that HE hired are negotiating with not just his money but also that of his brothers he represents as the one in charge of the day to day operations of the franchise. 

You are suggesting that he has never been asked for budget increase requests by the baseball people that he hired to negotiate with players, nor received explanations, reasoning, justifications for such requests.

You are suggesting that he has never been briefed on the results or status of any negotiations over 13 years. 

If you are not suggesting that he hasn't briefed, updated during his 13 years as the one in charge. Then you can only be suggesting that he is unable to retain anything from the briefings, updates, meetings, casual conversation.

The representative of the ownership group. the guy who ultimately fired Terry Ryan and hired Derek Falvey as his "baseball people". The guy who not only has access to the room that you and I don't have access to but actually OWNS the room.  He doesn't have working knowledge of how baseball negotiations work? 

The level of engagement or incompetence that you are painting is beyond any reasonable logic, that it's equal to anyone who claims that Rocco is an idiot when trying to express their frustration.

I've never met the man... I've listened to him speak during interviews. I don't believe that Rocco is an idiot because the odds of his being an idiot and not only hired but retained are incredibly low and the same goes for the level of aloofness of Jim Pohlad that you are trying to pass along to the rest of us. 

Any such suggestion is not worthy of space or consideration.

Just so we are all very clear on budgets, the Twins have never been restricted from signing a free agent due to any contracts that were carried on their financial books. If this were to happen, it would be a first and thus using the past as a useful lesson we simply don't have to worry about that concern.

This offseason may determine whether the Twins can join those teams fighting for a league championship or whether the team may look to turn toward a new set of core players to be competitive looking several years down the road. The malaise towards the team, as exhibited by soft attendance and viewership numbers in 2022, needs a jolt because there is a significant interest in entertainment in this post Covid time. A fun team combined with the expected faster pace of play due to some new rules in play for 2023 could see a noteworthy rise in interest in the Twins across the region along with a major increase in attendance as well. The time is ripe to draw people towards the Twins.

The Twins are not forced to sign Correa or any other specific star attraction but a significant move towards a better on field product is required for 2023. This can be accomplished through trades, the signing of free agents, the maturation of a few players, and/or some unexpected plus contributions from the younger less experienced players currently in the system. Waiting and hoping for a Happ or a Garlick to lead the Twins forward will not cut it and I'm quite positive that the front office is aware of this. I'm not interested in decent offers or "we had some conversations with a number of teams". The Twins need a new identity - more athletic, sound fundamentally, and aggressive.

So now you know, no player contract has ever inhibited the Twins from a decision on whether they could or couldn't sign a free agent. 

If the boss says he’s on board, you better sign him!! This would get more fans back in the seats. We want to see a team that can compete in the central. My guess 100 %?

If the boss has given you P&L authority, you can decide for yourself.  The boss then saying he's on board means the signing falls within the limits of authority he's given you.
