Do the Yankees still get Tanaka?

Jayson Stark does some math on the Yankee's budget, if they want to stay under $189M.

1. Does A-Rod get suspended for 2014?

2. Is the staying under $189M threshold just PR?

3. Who wins the Tanaka Sweepstakes?

Stark highlights some teams who have all the bullets in their guns so to

speak:

By my calculations, the Braves, Brewers, Nationals, Pirates, Cubs, Diamondbacks and Astros have spent zero dollars in the big league free-agent market this winter.

That is, with the new Posting rules: If you put up $20M you can negotiate. This his far better for small to mid market teams as well as in the best interests of the player (Tanaka in this case). As he can more freely choose where he'd like to play. IT also put the money the player gets as counting more towards the luxury tax vs exclusive contract negotiations for one team who put $100M or so towards the player.

So this comes into play even more so with the Yankees impending self imposed luxury tax being their threshold.

Wish the Twins had that Japanese SS/2B from a few years back or I should say I wish he had panned out.

The flip side is the Twins are actually one of the most aggressive teams for Eastern players in their minors and international signings.

Who knows...but it seems the floodgate is more open to lower and mid-market teams.

With Cano signing with Seattle.

I believe Tanaka is going to be a Yankee unless the Japenese team refuses to post him.

No Cano... Means Two Large Contracts can replace him. Tanaka and Choo are my best guesses.

I think the Yankees go hard after Tanaka now and the lure of the pinstripes would lure him.

I think the Tanaka (was always shaky at best) dream is over in one way or another.

God... I hate the Yankees.

I still think LA might get him. They need one more really good pitcher if they want to make it to the world series and I think Tanaka gives them that. He might not be an ace but should be a 2 or 3 for sure. I don't think the mid market teams will compete but then again I did n't see Seattle getting Cano either. I think the Yankees lose this one but we will see.

Maybe... But I think the Angels are cash strapped. The Yankees are all of a sudden flush with it.

I was thinking the Dodgers. Yeah the Angels are unlikely to have what it takes to get him. I wonder what they are waiting for as their pitching stunk last year for the most part. They have to be desperate for an arm or two.

Desperate and Hamstrung. Pujols and Hamilton and a drained farm system has put them in an impossible position.

I'd almost rather be the Twins. ;)

The Angels will come back when Pujols and Hamilton come back and go nuts. Even that might not be enough with the back half of that rotation.

The Angels were a terrible example of terrible GM'ing or Arte Moreno impatience... in my opinion.

They Yankees have signed some bigger free agents (Ellsburry and McCann), for slightly less than what it took to sign Cano. I wouldn't say they're flush with cash if they still plan on getting under the luxury tax. I also don't think that the would hesitate to spend money on a play that they really want. I still think that if the Yankees really want Tanaka, they will pay to get him, but it's not necessarily a foregone conclusion... yet.

Gut feeling .... nobody's signing Tanaka this off-season.

Unless they feel like he's a huge injury risk, why post him? They're still likely to get the $20m next year after they've had one more season of their star player. The limit on the posting fee is a disincentive to post star players any earlier than the last off-season before the player's contract expires (unless, of course, there is a big risk of injury or regression).

I don't see how this works out to be a good thing for the smaller teams. With the negotiating threshold capped at that number, a figure any MLB team could meet, it basically makes every elite Japanese player a free agent. How many of these guys pick the Twins, or say, the Reds, or the Royals, over the Yankees or Dodgers when they can have their pick of any team that posted the 20MM? My guess is, not many.

Will be interesting to see what the new agreement says about players who voluntarily retire. I know in the past this has been a sticking point.

Said it yesterday, About the Twins only chance is to go oppisite of the other teams who will want 5-7 year deals, selling him on a short contract 2+1 years , letting him get his feet wet and established in the majors , then becoming a free agent at an early age with a proven tract record

Yankees are betting on ARod being suspended to stay under the luxury tax. They have now signed 5 major FA's (Jeter,Beltran, Kuroda, McCann,Ellsbury). They will not be able to afford throwing the 15-20 million a year to sign him without paying the luxury tax. That is also why a mid market team could win the bidding war. Very good pitching is going to cost money. Yankees will have to get creative with their money spending. This does not count their other big money player(Sabathia, Texraria) and the mid level players Suzuki, etc.

I like that the player has a choice between hghest bids although MLB really just needs to get to an overall international draft thats seperate from the amateur draft that doesnt just rely on slot money assigned by amateur draft order.

I think the favorites are

1) Dodgers

2) Mariners

3) Yankees

4) Red Sox

I think Ryan makes a $20mill bid and tries to lure him but don't think he will choose MN to negotiate with.

Also, I think Ryan signs Garza right after the Tanaka domino drops.

According to Stark with Kuroda and Beltran signed the Yankees are all tapped with the exception of ARod's suspension dollars if they are serious about the 189M cap. And that includes some funny accounting that freed up 10M. They will have to be very certain that ARod is gone for the season if they want to avoid the luxury tax.
