Over moderation

Less aggressive' date=' or more creative? Instead of using the "s" word, perhaps one could make reference to the Twins Kubel/Bartlett clubhouse as an Assisted Living Complex/Salvage Yard/Charitable Thrift Store for Twins from a bygone era? Is that approach more germane to the sophistication of Twins Daily than resorting to the "S" word? Acceptable, or no?

It's your website, guys. I appreciate tending to the high level of moderation. We get to play here, but you make the rules, and play umpire. Thanks for the chance to play. If you build it, we will come.[/quote']

Thanks, Greed Guy.

We're all susceptible to lapses in judgment and most of us cross (or come near) the line at points. The important thing is to learn from the situation and why the moderator action was taken. This community is bigger than any one personality and the moderators are looking out for the good of the board as a whole, something that's hard to see from an outside perspective.

I've had my hand slapped by the moderation crew a few times. A couple of times, I disagreed but ultimately changed the post and it was the better for it. A couple of other times, the mods were completely right; I had stepped over the line and deserved to be called out for it. It happens.

Can't we just just come up with something better than calling something stupid? By it's definition stupid is a derogatory term, I get calling a spade a spade and everything but using a word like stupid tends to lead to things spiraling out of control because of it's insulting nature.

From a moderation standpoint it's really just trying to protect the forums from becoming a place where people just hurl insults back and forth and calling things stupid usually starts that ball rolling, it's best to stop it before it gathers any steam.

Then you didn't actually listen to the man. I'll let the auto-filter do its job and presumably the meaning remains clear:

What does it mean? It means to make love. Right? We're going to make love, yeh, we're going to ****, yeh, we're going to ****, yeh, we're going to make love. (laughter) we're really going to ****, yeah, we're going to make love. Right? And it also means the beginning of life, it's the act that begins life, so there's the word hanging around with words like love, and life. And yet on the other hand, it's also a word that we really use to hurt each other with, man. It's a heavy. It's one that you save toward the end of the argument. (laughter) Right? (laughter) You finally can't make out. Oh, **** you man. I said, **** you. (laughter, murmur) Stupid ****. (laughter) **** you and everybody that looks like you.

Keep the contempt out, and the choice of words will usually be irrelevant, if you keep it approximately within broadcast TV standards.

I promised myself I'd stay out of this thread, but oh, well. Gormless twit am I.

I am wondering what people think about JB_Iowa's very legitimate concern. It would be unfortunate if that got lost amidst the linguistic debates.

I assure you that she was not the only one to express such concerns. They were noted and you won't see such a heavy focus on the drinking aspect of future events.

That said, it really was meant to be more of a play on words than a hearty endorsement of getting drunk. It's certainly understandable that some didn't see it that way.

Thank you. I could see the play on words (as I'm sure others did). For me it was primarily that there were discussions last summer about this being a "safe " site for young teens, etc. to post and I thought the name sent the wrong message (especially since the event was highlighted on the front page over a period of time).

I'm glad to see names that are a little more neutral like "Winter Meltdown". You have created a great site -- there's just a lot of balls to keep in the air each time you undertake something new!!

Edit: I actually raised the concern last fall by PM'ing one of the site owners. I assume that others may have raised their concerns in the same way. Things don't have to be played out on the public forums. I appreciate the courteous response I received then and I appreciate that the concerns may influence the way future events are named and promoted.

I'd like to add some thoughts to the recent discussion. I don't pretend to speak for anyone but myself; I do however have deep-seated investment in creating a fruitful place for intellectual discussion about baseball.

On stupidity.

My problem is two fold. Firstly, I feel there's an issue of extremism. Not just the language of words like 'stupid' (and its more palatable euphemisms), but the actual position held behind the use of such words is extreme--such language (and position) seek to dismiss alternative points of view not only as different, or simply wrong, but mentally deficient, as if the opinion has no business being held by thoughtful, respectful people whatsoever (godforbid). The position is always already inflammatory because it is intentionally dismissive. More, extremist positions not only alienate those who disagree with you, but also those who partially (even mostly) agree with you. Posters who attempt to draw comments back towards even-handedness are posited as oppositional due to the entrenched position (in this case, that the Twins (and those who agree with them) are apriori thestupid.)

Secondly, there's something inherently lazy in calling something stupid. One of my problems with eager judgments of the front office is the assumption that we (posters on this forum) operate with the same access to quantity/quality of information as the Twins do. We never know the full story--especially, (and frustratingly) as close to the vest the Twins run their operation. We have to accept that there's many reasonable paths to take in any one decision when running a baseball (or any) operation; rarely are decisions out-and-out mentally deficient. Calling any one thing the Twins do stupid is a judgment based on an incomplete information, and more the judgment lacks precision and explanation.

While many have a gut feeling the Twins mismanage their operation and bilk their consumers, the evidence is always circumstantial and incomplete. Many are eager to formulate a pattern--and are quick to say, look, here's more evidence of their incompetence--even if such evidence is specious, a square peg in the round (pigeon) hole of one cast-in-dye opinion. The thing is even if such posters turn out right; the basis and certainty was not on the evidence as is--but on a hunch; such posters seems to make a 'bet' that they are correct (and they may well turn out to be), but such thinking isn't going to elicit a discussion (and that's why we are here, to discuss, not to be right).

I think we should take a little introspection as to why we want to dismiss any opinions or actions (as that is the purpose of using a word like stupid). Indeed, do we tend to Troll those who disagree with us? I know in the past, I behaved in such a way, as to suggest my opinion was a foregone conclusion and those that didn't hold it were some how obviously deficient. Sometimes, our desire to post is rooted in the reaction that we want from it.

If the moderators don't intervene in thestupid discussion, posters like me will be compeled to rehash the extremism, inflammatory-ness, and laziness of such positions. And that's just a lot of hot air and not really about baseball.

This said, I've been pleased with the shape of discourse on the board since this topic began some months ago; the notions of exclusivity, for my part, have totally ameliorated. I'd like to thank the moderators for the continued fine job they do.

I believe that the moderators do a good job and if people try to write articulately without belittling or berating anyone, there will be precious few problems.

Use of the words stupid, etc. don't really bother me but I do see how they make the threads devolve into not interesting discussion. I must say that I enjoy Spirit of Dave's comments but really understand how this thing got started with his Lee Harvey Oswald reference. Time for that tagline to go - nothing funny, clever or useful about that type of reference to the death of another person.

Many would disagree, including one of the founders of this site....

FWIW: As I have mentioned, I think the moderators have done a very good job overall and more importantly have been more "fluid" flexible as time goes on...as has many of us posters.

Personal opinion: if you don't find anything funny about a JFK assassination joke... Seriously.

We run a tight ship here at TD but it's not a convent.

A week before Lincoln was shot he was in Monroe, Maryland.

A week before Kennedy was shot he was also in Monroe.

What did Teddy Kennedy say when asked if he would consider

running for President?

He said he'd have to drive off that bridge when he got to it.

  • 4 weeks later...

As the team inevitably struggles as the summer moves on. I think it's time to revisit diehardtwinsfan's thoughtful treatise on thread-jacking and flamebaiting; while the subject is 'spending,' the analysis applies to many incendiary aspects of front office management.
