Article: Three-Bagger: M&M Revival, Capps' Health & Perspective

Recommended Posts

On the whole, have there really been any major surprises this year?

The offense looks solid.

The starting pitching looks retched.

The bullpen has been inconsistent at best.

Span, Mauer, Morneau are looking lke they are back on track to being their old selves.

Carroll is getting on base with solid defense.

Capps looks pretty bad.

Other than Willingham outperforming expectations, and the injury bug whacking the pitching staff, this sounds about right. 4-9 does sound pretty good at this point.

Nick, I've taken the liberty of crafting some tweets for you, seeing as how you obviously have some kind of supernatural connection with the guys on the 25 man;

"Yet another year the Twins won't win a World Series, Mauer/Morneau/Span/Willingham not good enough, #provemewrong"

"Francisco Liriano has lost all of his ace stuff, and can't win major league games #whatsastrikezone"

"Twins training staff should petition to be paid by the injury this year, since everyone will get hurt #flightsfromrochester"

If you look at Capps' career FB velocities, you'll see that the 2009 and 2010 values are an aberration. His career average FB has been at high 92s every other season so getting back to that might not be much of a surprice and might not indicate health issues. Plus it is early in the season and most pitchers' velocities are a bit off from their season peaks. This off-season he developed the splitter and has been using it in games with some success. Still too early. Let's see...

The bullpen has actually been better then most would have thought. If the starting pitching was good this would be a different team.

And as for Capps, yes he has given up runs, but he has not blown a save. Most other big name closers already have. Take what you want from that.

My main concern since before the season started was starting pitching and the closer. I'm not quite ready to retch over the starters, but they have been rather wretched so far. As for Capps, oh get him out of there! Perky looked like his arm is ok last night (hope he has no pain today). He's gotta close.

Pavano, Liriano, Baker, Blackburn, Marquis, that has been eliminated quickly to Pavano, Marquis, Blackburn, Hendriks, Swarzak??? Capps the closer? Eliminate the "closer", go bullpen by committee please. The Twins are going to need a lot of help this year in the pitching category
