Article: Twins Trade Justin Morneau To Pirates

Good for Morny. I only wish him the best.

While it is too early to judge the trade till we know if we are getting a prospect or cash later but right now I'm confused. Not by the fact we didn't get much for Morny but the fact the warm body coming back is an OFer. Our outfield is pretty crowded as is.

Guys, he was going to be a FA and if the Twins want him back, he will be back here. The fact that we were to trade him for anything makes this a good trade. I wish Morneau (and Liriano!) the very best and hope he finally gets a ring, or at least a playoff series victory.

Waiting for someone to say the Twins should have thrown in money for a better prospect.

There was no reason for the Pirates to do that. They were the only one in the market for Morneau. They could set the terms. The money was not going to break them.

I'm with those that are hoping Justin gets a ring.

He will be one of the only guys in the Pirates clubhouse with playoff experience.

Ryan may have done this so Justin gets a shot at the playoffs.

Also, I think this may release the Twins from some 10 and 5 rules in the event that they resign him in the offseason.

Go Pirates!

I'm glad he went to Pitt, that's the team I'm already getting behind for the playoffs. Nice to have him on there to cheer for. Also, and I could be wrong, but does moving him give us more options with resigning him next year? I thought there was some rule about resigning a player to a certain percentage of their previous salary. (Maybe that was just with extensions...)

In any case, not a great return so far but that could change with the PTBNL. Let's hope it isn't cash this time too, it already looks like we dodged paying the rest of this year's bill.

Good point - this might have been an important piece

Another good point - like to know that for myself.

From a purely baseball prospective, trading him for anything was right. But this wasn't Mike Pelfrey or Jamey Carroll. If all you're going to get is garbage and salary relief, it's not worth the bad PR of trading a former-MVP and the second-most popular player on the team. A case where Dave St. Peter should over-rule Terry Ryan, essentially.

I'm happy we got something for Morneau... it ain't much... I guess we have Thomas, Ramirez, Mastroianni, and Presley now as our medicore OFs. Presley has spent most of his career in LF so I wonder if Willingham goes to DH. Of course, Arcia should be in the corner OF too.

Perhaps Willingham is gone by tommorrow also.

Does anyone know how PTBNL works? Can it be stacked based on how Morneau plays? So if he hits like it's 2010 for the next 6 weeks they get a better player and if he hits like it's 2011 (or gets injured) it's cash? Or do both sides already know the player but can't mention him until his tradeable?

IMO we have to wait for the PTBNL to judge this trade.

If you look at the PTBNL Butera brought in, it's possible there's a talented player coming the Twins way, but the Pirates in exchange for giving up a prospect wanted protection in the event that Morneau got a concussion or other injury (A very reasonable thing to ask for with Morneau's recent history)

It's also important to note, that while we as Twins fans love the memory of what Morneau was, no GM is going to pay for past performance. The Pirates GM pay for a month of Morneau's services + playoffs. The market for that isn't stunning.

This is painful to watch. I sure hope Ryan knows what he is doing. I feel like a guy hitting like Morneau has the past few months would warrant something better than an old, crappy OF.

Go Pirates and I would love to see Morneau back since Parmalee is clearly not the answer.

I was hoping to see the same folks that were advocating we had to trade Justin (and/or Doumit/Willingham) because 'something is better than nothing' in here defending the currently lackluster return. The salary dump comments are silly.

The only positive here so far is a chance to see Colabello and maybe Parmelee, but I'd have to agree with others that the PR hit isn't worth it. Perhaps Justin told the team he'd be happy to go join a playoff team and they were trying to accommodate that, but I find that unlikely.

Trading him is the right move, he deserves the right to play for a playoff contender and will help the Pirates down the stretch. The issue I have is the Twins trade him for nothing but were demanding a top prospect for Willingham if you are going to sell, sell everyone. Doumit, relief pitchers, anyone who can return a bucket of practice balls

You guys realize we'd have to go like 5-24 for that to happen, right?

Actually it's 4-25.

Not going to happen, but as much grief as Justin gets on these boards, he is all that keeps us from a loss from time to time.

The '100 losses' is a metaphor. You are correct, of course. It won't happen.

It would be fascinating to see the PTBNL process behind the scenes.

Interesting that Pittsburgh is apparently paying the full salary. They obviously could have claimed him on waivers for that, but perhaps the Twins high demands at the time scared them off -- they basically figured the Twins would just pull him back and they couldn't get him for any price. Only by NOT claiming him were they able to obtain him. Bit of a baseball paradox.
