Eduardo Escobar,Oswaldo Arcia and Chris Parmelee sent down to AAA?

I know this. I just wanted that spot to be filled by a prospect, or maybe a DFA'd player. (Jair Jurrjens anyone?)

And I'm not trying to justify the move. I was trying to give my idea of the rationale of TR and Gardy.

I'm with you on the Jair Jurrjens potential move. Cheap, low-risk/high-reward pick-up, potentially better than any current AAA option, could be a potential asset as a starter or in the pen.

I guess TR could argue that Bernier is a very temporary placeholder, as soon as they clear the decks on July 31, the roster could look radically different, maybe they even put in a claim on Jurrjen as past of this makeover. (We can hope, anyway.)

There may be a need to bump someone from the 40 man in the future (eg coming off DL) and I would rather have Bernier passed through waivers than other middle infielders mentioned . On the other hand, why have we not passed Butera through waivers? I would see that as a positive if he was claimed... Just saying...

I've seen the phrase many times in the sense Seth meant, and dictionary.com seems to back him up on it, with definition 2:

Untracked | Define Untracked at Dictionary.com

2. Informal. achieving a superior level of performance after a slow start: The team suddenly got untracked and began to score.

More info on "untracked" which apparently is an odd sports term that means something totally different to some in sports from its non sports meaning.

what a joke of a series of moves by an overmatched GM!!!
During the rebuilding process, I think it can be difficult to make sense of the day to day decisions unless one is privy to the bigger picture. The national writers have been quite complimentary toward Ryan and I personally have never heard a hint of him being overmatched from those circles.

All three of those guys probably needed to be in AAA for various reasons and they needed someone to take their place on the roster.

This will be a footnote by Aug 1.

Just looked him up, and wow, Bernier is not a hitter at all. He's been abysmal for his minor league career outside of Colorado Springs, and that was 5 years ago. We're talking near-Mendoza AVG, SLG lower than OBP, very few steals, and not even a very good K rate. He's been an OK hitter in Rochester this year, but it still seems pretty empty -- basically, 10 extra singles and 2 extra HR over his normal atrocious line. He must play some pretty stellar defense?

I'd much rather have seen Richardson, if only to be a pinch runner and defensive caddy for Doumit/Colabello. With Dozier, Florimon, and Plouffe fairly entrenched right now, there just isn't a need for two backup infielders, especially not while we have zero "true" backup outfielders.

I think there's many prongs here. 1) Get Arcia, Parm and Escobar untracked. 2) Get all the vets in the lineup so as to better sell them 3) Give Collabello a sincere chance (he may not have had that with Arcia and Parm on the same roster).

Beresford has played, um, 4 games at SS this year. At AA.

I believe Escobar is going to AAA to get some playing time and hone his skills at SS. From what I've read he is a really fun guy to have around and I suspect they intend to have him back.

Arcia has 88 AB in AAA. The pitching there is better than AA and many of the pitchers he will face have MLB experience. He can get his swing back and rejoin the club in September. Plus it will get us another year of control. I believe these were factors in the decision to send him down. I'm OK with that.

Colabello earned another shot at MLB pitching. Good for him.

Oddly enough, I believe that Bernier is up because he is unlikely to ever be a regular MLB player, utility or otherwise. This move is toward grooming Escobar for that.

I like the Herrmann and Colabello moves, though it'll be complicated to get everyone in consistently. Both could use the time to become future trade chips if they don't fit in to our roster.

Link to an article in Bernier's home town paper. Point of interest is their claim he should have been a AAA all star this year based on his stats and defense. St. Joseph graduate Doug Bernier called up by Twins : High-school

Wikipedia describes him as a utility infielder. Sounds like a defensive substitute...If only we had an offensive infield that could use one!

Here is an idea for the front office... DFA Butera, send Diamond down, Claim Jair Jurrjens, Call Diamond back when we trade Correia or Pelfrey, or when Diamond has reclaimed his stuff and its time to send someone else down

Jurrjens has a history of being better than anyone else on the current 40 man as a starter... http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/j/jurrjja01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&utm_source=direct&utm_medium=linker-www.typepad.com

44 posts and I still haven't seen anyone satisfactorily explain the rationale for the promotion of Bob Dernier....oops, I mean Doug Bernier. Maybe that's because probably 90% of the TD faithful had never heard of him before this evening?

A few posts later and still no rationale...I was one who had never heard of Bob Dernier (or Doug Bernier)...I looked him up on MiLB.com--he is THIRTY-THREE years old. He has not broken .250 since 2008 until this year. Has no chance of being called a prospect.

Arcia demotion makes sense only to avoid Super 2--like Parmalee he has nothing to show in the minors. Arcia and Parmalee need MLB at-bats (instead of Doumit) to see if they will be part of the (hopefully) contending Minnesota Twins in 2015. If the goal is to get them ABs, send them to New Britain which is actually playing this week...

Yeah, the only way a defensive sub makes sense is if they plan to keep Colabello on the bench for pinch-hitting, and use him for Florimon. But Jamey Carroll could be that sub too.

I'd rather give Colabello 3+ AB every day as a starter, and then sub in Richardson or whomever if you need a late game pinch runner or OF defensive sub.

Gardy said Escobar needs games and the others need swings because they aren't swinging well. I prefer he would say it that way than the way you suggested. They deserve better treatment from a manager.

What? How is it "better treatment from their manager" to have him say publicly that they suck instead of that they need more swings? That's bizarre.

One describes where they need to work. It shows confidence they will improve. The other is only derogatory. How would it help Arcia?

I'll bet coming into the season Clete Thomas would have called you a liar if you told him he had a full-time starting job with a MLB team by the middle of June and that there would be little outlook of him losing it long past the All-Star break.

I doubt I could find an emoticon to convey my thoughts on that subject.

Sad to say, but right now Clete is a better player than Arcia. Perhaps it will take a week, perhaps two, but Arcia will start hitting again and when he does he'll be back. Parmelee also isn't hitting and hence isn't good at baseball right now. He needs to hit and have a place to play. Escobar needs the at-bats. He's still a young player and has spent most of the last two years watching major league baseball. My timetable: Arcia for Herrmann by the end of July. Parmelee when a trade is completed for Morneau or Doumit (or both) and Escobar returns in 22 days, giving the Twins another year of team control over their utility infielder.

While I wouldn't have predicted purchasing the contract of Bernier, in retrospect I see no reason not to experiment given that this year is all about experimentation. He is a shortstop - a position where we have been weak for years, even with Florimon's improvement this year. Yes, his historical stats are not stellar, but this year he is hitting well. This is his first year in the organization - we all know that sometimes a change of scenery can make a big difference. Let's kick the tires and see if we have anything in Bernier. We had the open 40-man spot. If he turns out to be a dud, we can jettison him later and not lost anything.

And I don't know what his age has to do with anything.

Bernier is a strange move since I just don't see the need for an extra infielder given that Dozier is perfectly fine and Jamey Carroll is on the roster. Happy for Herrmann and Colabello though. I originally wanted both to be up with the Twins at the beginning of the season.
