Vance Worley named Rochester's Player of the Week

Recommended Posts

The Rochester Red Wings announced today that right-handed starter Vance Worley, who struggled mightily with the Twins this season, has been named the Batavia Downs Player of the Week as well as the International League Pitcher of the Week honors following two strong starts.

Worley threw 16.1 innings, allowing 11 hits and only one run while striking out seven and walking just one. Since his demotion, Worley is now 3-3 with a 3.07 ERA and a 22-to-8 strikeout-to-walk ratio.

Anyone know if he's getting more swinging strikeouts? I don't exactly scour the game logs after his starts, but it'd be interesting to see if he's found something or just fooling minor leaguers.

He has been at 6% swinging strike rate with Rochester. That's moderately better than his 3.9% rate while with the Twins.

Hey! That's better than a 50% improvement. Baby steps, I'll take it. It's good to see that he's keeping a low profile and going about his business in trying to re-find his 2011 stuff. At age 25, there's a good chance he'll get another shot this season to redeem himself with the Twins at the major league level. It would be nice to know something more definitive about him, like Gibson, going into 2014.

Of course, his Twins minor league K rate is still 4.9, nowhere near the 7-9 range he posted in the Phillies upper minors (and Phillies MLB). Not sure if they are trying to change him or if he's just lost a lot of stuff.

I think he just needs 10-20 more days in AAA to delay his first arbitration eligibility until after 2014 -- safe to say that will probably happen. And it's probably good so we can figure out what we really have in him, before committing any serious cash, although I feel bad for Worley as his first "big" payday is delayed.

Gibson already coming up. Worley could be replacing PJ Walters if Walters doesn't have a drastic improvement over his last start.

He likely knows Gibson is already coming up. Be shocked if he didn't. I think that's why he said he 'WAS expecting Worley to get the call before Gibson' instead of saying 'I expect Worley to get the call before Gibson.'
