Article: Gibson Gets the Call

Recommended Posts

(who is on your ignore list)

Where do you find that ignore list and how do you add someone to it?? And as long as I'm asking, is there a spellchecker?

I've actually stopped reading thru most of the comment sections because they get to be a gripe fest, most of the time by the same posters, with the same theme, the Twins front office can't do anything right. I read the informative articles and move on to other sites. And if you do post you get shot down and ridiculed for being ignorant, presenting bad arguments, etc.

I only slogged thru this one because I wanted to see if people were happy about the Gibson posting. I did notice that one of the principle gripers didn't post - he must be on vacation.

Just think of the angst if Hernandez had been kept on the 25 man instead of Gibson!!! There would be 3 times as many posts here!!!

I've been wondering if it is possible/advisable to turn off the "reply with quote" feature. I've notice that when a forum thread derails, it is often because a few people are replying back and forth to each other. It gets personal and sometimes passions get the better of us. Without that feature, people could still post their thoughts, and there would still be some negativity and critiquing (some justified, some not) but there might be less "egging each other on." Just a thought, and maybe the software doesn't allow that.

Without that feature, it's almost impossible to have a conversation. I've seen forums without a reply feature and it turns into a free-for-all of one-liners and throwaway comments. Believe it or not but things actually get worse without it, as those systems tend to encourage less civil debate and more "your an idiot lol" responses.

Click on the user's name and select View Profile. Add user to ignore list is somewhere in the left-side option list on their profile.

As for a spellchecker, I've toyed with the idea of adding one but haven't done a lick of research into what it requires. When I get some extra time, I'll poke around and see what I can find.

They probably want him up all week so Rick Anderson can see his bullpen session and let him get acclimated. He got called up!! Can we just be happy?
Rick Anderson needs to have a BP with GHibson make sure that he unde3rstands strikeouts are BAD.

I guess I don't understand why it's "whining" to ask why a front office would call up a starting pitcher a week before he's scheduled to start, which in effect means the team needlessly plays with a 24 man roster for a week. How is that different from everyone's favorite...letting a player with a "tweek" sit on the bench for a week before DLing him?

Do other teams call up starting pitchers and let them sit for a week before using them?

We're all glad Gibson is getting a promotion. We'd have been happy next weekend too, and the team might have had a useful player for the week on top of it.

If I post something like that, it's a nice way of me saying "I'm really tired of hearing Comment A or B." And if I'm tired of hearing it, you can bet money that other users and admins are tired of hearing it as well.

The persistent negativity is a problem and we're getting plenty of complaints about it (on top of the admin crew being extremely tired of seeing the same peoples' names pop up time and time again in the user report log). Users can either tone it down and stop dragging down nearly every thread on this forum or we can start handing out bans. Those are the two options. We all have plenty to do, we don't enjoy spending our free time playing the role of nanny.

It's fine to disagree with the front office. We all do it. But if someone's post count is 80% (or higher) in the negative, they should re-evaluate their attitude and why they post the things they do on the board. As site owners, we have to start thinking about the overall health of the site and persistently negative posters do far more damage to the forums than they do good.

I hereby nominate this post for the #1 position on the TD Wall of Fame.

Given that Pelfrey was DL'ed and Hernandez was in his spot (and now Gibson), they're still playing with a 25-man roster. They missed the opportunity to essentially make it a 26-man until the next start was needed.

They very well could have done this and I'd actually have liked to see Colabello up for the week, but then you could make the argument they should do that with every fringe starter after each start who is in an option year.

On its own, there is nothing wrong with questioning that move. I don't think it's a big deal either way but meh, whatever.

But comments like that are coming from the same people who complain about everything the Twins do and those same posters tend to be the people who show up in user complaint logs every week. As a result, peoples' patience tends to disappear as the comment is just another case of Username X complaining about. every. single. thing. the. twins. do.

As a result, the Twins Daily posting policy has now changed. Incessant negativity will be removed from the board. It's a pain in our ass to constantly deal with these posters and it's damaging to the overall community. Every minute we have to spend dealing with these issues is another minute we're not generating new site content and features. At some point, we need to focus on the things that matter and eliminate problem posters who consume far too much of our time.

I understand the argument for a position player, especially going into an NL park. But I also understand wanting to get him comfortable and settled. Get him into the meetings to go over hitters with Mauer and Anderson. Maybe get him an inning out of the bullpen on Tuesday (in lieu of a bullpen session), watch his bullpen session on Thursday, and generally make sure we do everything we can to make his debut a success. This isn't a stop-gap call-up. He's here for the long haul.

Asking reasonable questions of the club you are following for why they do what they do is not whining.

Castigating them no matter what they do, on the other hand, is; and some of those "reasonable" questions that have been floating around of late by a number of posters are down right silly.

Here's an idea for you Jokin. The trade deadline is coming up July 31. Put out a very detailed writing exactly what you think they should do in approach to the deadline and why. At the very least, it will put to rest the idea that you only want to criticize no matter what they do.

I'd look forward to reading and commenting on it... and I'd be more than happy to do the same.

This is kind of troubling that the founding fathers here would go the route of the strib and start censoring comments. Sad really!

Be mad, be happy, complain, defend but everyone should be heard and it's much better to have the right to ignore a comment or person than to have the comment censored before you have that chance, IMO.

I hereby nominate this post for the #1 position on the TD Wall of Fame.

So now we have opposing camps set up among the mods and admins.... Glunn and Brock have laid the down their own philosophical gauntlets, seemingly in diametric opposition to one another.

Perhaps a Twins Themed Poetry Slam is in order to determine the Wall of Fame positioning?

It can be billed as:

TD Internal Angst

The Techie Nerd vs. The Laid-back Lawyer----

to riff on the pressing TD Topic of the Day----

"I've Seen the Negativity and the Damage Done---Is There Really a Little Part of it in Everyone?"

I would love to see Colabello be rewarded more, but I don't see the fit given the current roster. Though, Jay has a point, there are ways around this......hopefully by July this is taken care of....

He'll get his shot soon enough. He is probably the first call up if a non infielder or catcher gets hurt and there should be a trade of some sort.

Maybe. But at some point if it hurts the website overall and consumes too much time a response seems prudent.

Well, we're all guests here, after all. I suppose if a guest doesn't like the way a party host does things they could try a different party, or even consider throwing one of their own.

The weirdest part is, reading both posts, is that Glunn is MUCH quicker with the warnings and such than Brock. Yet, reading their philosophical posts, you'd think it'd be the other way around.

Or the easy answer is they are responding to feedback from the majority of users. You are a smart individual, you should be able to adjust a little. The board will be better for it.

At the end of the day, we have to do what's best for the site.

If that includes removing problem users from the site entirely, we are willing to do just that. You may not mind reading negative comment after negative comment but there are plenty of people who email and message us that it deters them from visiting the site entirely.

One person's desire to say or do what he/she wants is not more important than the overall health of the site itself.

Which is a pretty good indication that my patience has been tested, pushed, pushed a little further, and then stomped on repeatedly over the course of the past month.

We've tried being nice about this multiple times. It hasn't worked. Now we're moving on to a more proactive strategy.

Or that the constant defenders of the FO, Pohlads and Gardy are quicker to report 'negative' posts because they conflict with their own opinions and can hide that real reason by complaining how 'negative' they are.

Personal attacks should be reported, no doubt. 'Negative' posts should be debated. Rah Rah posts are just as detrimental as 'negative' posts because they hide the problems that should be discussed.

I get that, and it's your site. You guys certainly have the right to boot people off as you see fit.

Hard to believe that fans of a team that want to talk a little baseball are getting bored/frustrated/sick of a constant drum beat of negativity with every move or decision the team makes.

This is fine if it truly leads to balanced, healthy debate.

But when the balance between optimistic and pessimistic posts gets too out of whack, debate is stifled, not encouraged.

That's my perception of what has developed here recently.

Except that there's plenty of baseball being talked, just not the way you want it talked. Are you surprised that after two consecutive seasons of being the worst team in the American League, there's negativity?

Personally, I don't think I fall into the category of always negative or always positive. There are good things going on and bad things going on. All of it should be discussed honestly.
