Article: PJ Walters To Fill Minnesota Twins Rotation Spot

Recommended Posts

Im gonna bet on Hendriks or Benson getting DFAd tho it should be Butera, with Arcia goin down (Twins can get an extra yr of service time from him & Gardy is refusing to play him anyway).

If they do Drew, I may back off on my hatred of the front office.

I, for one, am going to rush right out and buy a ticket to watch one of our potential bright young stars of the future, PJ Walters, as he makes his season debut with the big league club. Uhhhhhh...

Maybe it is best to make sure Gibson is truly ready or to delay his clock...but the hints of early season optimism around a team that was an overachieving .500 club 10 days ago are fading fast, if not already gone altogether. PJ Walters may be a great guy, but he isn't sparking any interest.

I believe Darin Mastroianni going on the 60 day DL opened up Walters spot on the the 40 man roster, so no one will have to be DFAd. Just need to drop someone from the 25, Thielbar, Fien, and Arcia IMO would be most likely. Colabello hopefully will stay until Plouffe comes back maybe longer if he can outperform Parmelee.

Nope, Mastroianni's move made room for Colabello. They are probably going to move Wood to the 60-Day DL to make room for Deduno.

Since they are the only 2 injured players they are going to have to bump someone off of the 40-man to make room for Walters.

Mastro's transfer made room for Colabello. Wood's imminent transfer makes room for Deduno. There will need to be one more transaction to make space for Walters. Also, as soon as he is activated, someone will need to be demoted from the 25-man roster.

Sorry, Sweet One, I must type slower than you.

Even if we do lose a fringe player from the current 40-man, the impact is highly likely to be zero. Kyle Gibson is just about the only reason to not do this. I think this is the right time to do this though.

With a rotation of Diamond, Correia, Pelfrey, Deduno, and Walters... it's about impossible to think that Gibson won't have the opportunity to step in for one of them shortly. He's clearly next in line with only Albers as any other reasonable consideration. I just hope we don't see a ton of overreactions to this move.

Like most everyone else, I'd rather have seen Gibby. However, if they had to go off the 40 man anyway - why not Albers? His WHIP and strikeouts match Walters, but his ERA is a full run better than Walters and he's a lefty. We know what Walters has given us, let's try some new blood. Besides, with the team in the midst of a 9-game losing streak and the fans getting antsy, bringing Albers in would create some buzz. Bringing up Walters - meh! It seems that the front office has thrown in the towel and doesn't care if fans show up or not (kind of like the late 90's)

The Twins have set themselves up for some fun and games. They have a slew of talent that could be claimed if removed from the 40-man, including Butera, hermsen, hendriks, Benson for sure. If they decide not to keep Walters or Deduno down the line, both can be grabbed by other teams, then re-optioned out and stocked away in the minors. Colabano should never have been added. He can't be removed from the 40-man without someone claiming him, so the Twins now have a 30-year-old rookie that they really didn't need on the roster that they can't get rid of unless they truly want to get rid of him.

Be interesting to see. Too many outfielders. Need an infielder?

I read somewhere that they have three options on Colabello. I never saw that he had been optioned, so I believed it. I realize it is a last time situation for both Walters and Deduno, but I thought they had plenty of rope with Colabello.

This is a comical move. The move is to bring Gibson up, especially if you are playing for 2014 or 2015. He has an innings limit which means at best, you are only going to get so many looks at him vs. major leaguers before the 2014 season. This means in order to have an idea as an organization of how he is going to adjust at the next level for 2014, and to give Gibson the best idea of what he needs to work on in the offseason, you need to get the largest sample size you can for him. How can the Twins as an organization know what they need to add in the offseason if they head into it with a limited amount of knowledge? Get Gibson up sooner rather than later so both the team and Gibson himself can have the best understanding of how he translates in the big leagues, what he needs to focus on to improve, and determine if those improvements are even possible.

Ugh.

There is another reason for not calling up Gibson right now that hasn't been touched upon. There is little disagreement that Gibson will be up sometime this year. He will also most likely be in the rotation for several years after he is called up.

The same cannot be said about the other pitchers that the Twins are looking at: Walters, Deduno, Pelfrey, Hernandez, DeVries and to some extent Worley and Hendricks. These pitchers need to be evaluated as well. Most are either out of options or will no longer be under team control next year or the year after. The Twins need to know if they should be kept around next year as well. Gibson WILL be here, these others may not. A few of them had some success with the Twins before injuries sidetracked them.

We need to know if they can be counted on. Remember there were several college pitchers drafted in last year's draft and others in the lower levels that should be ready to move up the ladder next year. We cannot hold onto these pitchers and clog the upper levels of the minors if the others are ready. By the end of the year we should know whether they should be kept around or be released. Better to know sooner rather than later. I don't want any doubt in the front office's mind that these players should or shouldn't be retained. Several of them were probably brought back and given second chances due to injuries they had last year.

I would rather see them all get their fair shot and if they can't perform at the major league level, then they should be sent on their way.
