Article: The Rise of Josmil Pinto

Recommended Posts

Nice report.

I hope they get to see Pinto or Herrmann in a long enough stretch this year so the Twins can determine if either has the defense to be a viable back up catcher for 2014.

I am not sure that the Twins can get back anything more valuable than what Doumit can provide with the bat in 2014 so he may not be an asset on the trade market. If not, he would have value as a switch hitting DH/bench bat/emergency catcher on next year's roster.

Both Pinto/Hermann have shots at bein major leaguers real soon. Hermann's ability to play a legit LF position also gives versatility to 3rd C spot.

Remains to be seen if TR will look into dealing Doumit as a vet bat/C could have some value at trading time.

Unless Mauer moves to 1B or goes down it doesn't matter much who the backup C is for the next 5 years or so. Doumit is a pretty nice fit for now though and with these kids coming up I think it's safe to take Butera off the 40 man soon.

Kinda looks like the Twins knew what they were doing when he was a surprise addition, to some, to the 40-man roster last November. Personally, I have he and Herrmann flipped on my hypothetical depth chart. Pinto has hit too well since April, 2012 to not be #3.

(If) mauer gets hurt for an extended period of time, what happens? I find it safe to assume that Doumit will not catch full time. So is it herrmann or pinto who gets the call to play catcher everyday? I would have to guess that as of right now the twins can't afford to have herrmann'a bat in the lineup daily so pinto would be the guy. He could slot in behind Arcia/parmelee very easily.

I definitely agree with that. Herrmann was intriguing because he had enough offense for a #2/3 catcher with position flexibility. Pinto has enough bat to be a good #2 catcher and some DH.

In 2014, I can see Doumit gone (probably at the trade deadline this year) and both Pinto and Herrmann on the major league roster. Pinto has hit very well for a year plus. If he's decent defensively, he can earn himself a spot on the team. Herrmann's LH bat and versatility would make him an ideal 25th man. I don't think the Twins need to worry about Herrmann rotting on the bench. With a more compatible backup, Mauer might DH and play first more, especially if the big Canadian is playing for someone else.

Don't forget outfielder as well!!!!

Two relevant things that should have probably been included are that Pinto is on the 40 and that he's right-handed, which the Twins really need at catcher. I actually doubt Herrmann will be anything other than a AAAA player, not too different than Clete Thomas in that he'll get bits of MLB time but belongs in AAA.

I'm actually shocked that Doumit isn't already a Yankee, given they have no starting catcher. Arcia is probably here to stay, and the Yankees might part with reliever Mark Montgomery in such a deal.

It's good to see a little more depth to the pipeline behind Mauer. Between Hermann and Pinto, we can hope for at least one decent 2nd catcher and perhaps even Gardy's ever-preferred 3rd C option on the roster at a cost-controlled salary.
