Canterino to have TJ surgery....

Recommended Posts

So we would have to fit him on the 40 man roster this winter. Then, we either put him on the 60 day IL to open a 40 man spot (major league pay) or just keep him on the 40 man like we did Enlow this year until he was ready. Someone let us know if I have this wrong.

Wonder why it takes the doctors, maybe not with the Twins team, so long to figure this out. Seems like this has been speculated about a lot on TD.

Can't say I'm shocked, wasn't durability a huge red flag for him in the draft process? Or was that just his funky delivery?

Having the surgery so late in the year, he may not pitch until late 2023. Great. This pitching pipeline isn't working when the pipes are full of leaks... not to mention that our hitting prospects catch the injury bug at a high rate too. Another year, another failure to yield much from the pitching prospects.

Knocks on wood*Duran had similar issues and to the surprise of my jaded read end has fared well this year *knocks on wood. Still it seems like Canterino has been going through this for two years.

I'm going to push back a little bit on the people complaining about the pitching pipeline, obviously this is a major bummer for Matt, but as far as the impact to the system, isn't that what tinstaapp means? People always say you need 10 or so decent pitching prospects in order to get 1-2 viable major league pitchers, and then they act upset when one of the 10 gets injured or doesn't play well.

Off the top of my head, viable major league pitchers that have established themselves within the last year or so include: Joe Ryan, Ober, Jax, Duran, Winder, and Moran. This group also includes three of the top four pitchers on the team according to WAR. I mean, yes none of these guys have won a Cy Young yet, but isn't that a "pitching pipeline" Is supposed to be?

I'd say of those, Duran has established himself as a viable MLB pitcher. His stuff is too good not to be successful if healthy.

Ryan and Jax are partially there. Neither are established yet though. Ryan looks no better than Scott Diamond did after a year.

Ober, Winder and Moran have established nothing.

The "pipeline" is so robust they needed to sign Archer and  Bundy, and trade for another starter and 2 relievers.

If you're going back to the Bundy signing in December, then trading away any of those selfsame pipeline contents for Sonny Gray needs to be part of this impressive resume, as is the FA signing of Joe Freaking Smith (I checked and that's his real* middle name).

They started with zero pitchers. What did you expect this year. One pitcher, one, from the minor league system they inherited is a starter in the majors right now, maybe two, I might have that wrong. So, yes, they had to acquire guess from the outside. Linet nearly every team.

Well I didn't expect much from this "pipeline."

But I Sure read a lot over the winter and spring from folks who did.

Did you mean this pipeline??Image result for dripping tap emoji

Seriously though imo we have seen quite a few pitching prospects compared to say 2018 and 2019. Just seems like the high upside ones are on the shelf or underperforming. No minor league season in 2020 combined with so many injuries has put a lot of these guys 1-3 years behind where you would have expected them to be when they were drafted. Enlow is looking much better of late, Varland promoted there's good things happening to.

Anyway wishing Matt a full and speedy recovery

Would you add him to the 40-man?

Now he is 2-years away from contributing to the major leagues.

I would not, he pitched 37 innings this year, 23 in 21, 0  and coming of TJ, I see no need, if somebody wants to hide him next year on the 60 man, and hope he can pitch in 24 in the minors, good luck to them.

Also can we agree he is no longer a prospect? He will be 26 by the time he pitches in any game again.

Also Good luck Matt!

Scott Diamond was better than Ryan is in their first full year and was a year younger.  On top of Ryan is more like Gray and Mahle brought in via trade, he pitched all of 9 innings in the Twins minor leagues.

The Twins pitching pipeline is a really just a mash unit, but wait until next year when it really flourishes, yes that is answer, next year, when all the injured guys come back 100% healthy. ?‍♂️

He reminds me of J.T. CHARGOIS another flame throwing Rice University alum who I had high hopes for. He managed 53 innings with a 2.50 ERA and 9 SO per 9 last year at age 30 and managed over 60 this year, but is again on the shelf with an oblique strain. Canterino is going to be around the majors for a long time. He will probably have some success, maybe even a stellar career. The question is if he does shine, who will it be with?

I was and am a huge JT fan, his dad and my father inlaw are friends. (My father inlaw and his family are also from Sulphur LA)

I agree with wabene.  Canterino's STUFF is just too good NOT to end up being a major league pitcher.  Can he ever stay healthy ?  Who knows, but I want the Twins to stick with this guy.  Maybe he's destined to the bullpen.  Maybe he could still be a starter, but baseball players can play well into their 30's so his age as a prospect doesn't faze me.  His raw stuff excites me.  Don't give up on him.  I'm not a doctor, although I played one in a Mayo Clinic Heritage Days film a couple years ago.  But it just seems like TJ surgery was coming for Matt a LONG time ago.  Hope it all goes well and he's ready to contribute in 2024.  I for one, would like to see the Twins move him quickly through the system once he comes back if his health and performance merit it.  Let's have Matt get "major league" mileage on that arm.
