Twins Acquire Tyler Mahle from Reds

In no particular order beyond '22...you could have Mahle/Gray/Maeda/Ryan/Ober/Paddack in line for starting 5 competition...Archer/Bundy in the mix...assuming all are under contract...gotta give up talent which they did but we needed a solid starter which by all accounts he is.

I don't think there's any way Archer or Bundy are back. When is Paddack expected back?

I'm OK with giving up Steer... but including CEH hurts. That's 3 top 20 prospects for Mahle, who is a fine starter but nothing special. We desperately need a starter like him who can go the distance but he's not going to be a difference-maker in the playoffs.

I wouldn't be shocked if the Reds eventually 'win' this trade in a few years' time... but we could offset this by inking Mahle to an extension.

Its like getting Mahle, Gray and Lopez in the draft and instantly established in the majors.  Anyone should be thrilled with that type of draft......

Two prudent risks taken today.  I'm fine if Falvine stops here.

I am too, but I still think we need another bat. We also picked up Sandy Leon to be the backup C for the next 4-6 weeks. Would like to top off the day with a trade for Ian Happ but I'm thinking that may be a bridge too far.

Am I greedy, or is okay to wish for one more reliever? Please trade Joey Bagadoughnuts for a mid-tier bullpen arm. Please?

It already feels like Christmas, though.

Its ok to feed the greed once in a while.  lets get one more shut down reliever to shut down the Yanks offense in the playoffs....

but CES is the only one where I get a little squidgy about letting him go

With Miranda looking like the real deal, I think that opens up dealing CES. Hajjar is the one that concerns me but he is a long ways away from the majors. We got rid of both of our lefty starting pitchers from the 2021 draft.

I am on board with the trade. If you beilieve in Miranda then CES is expendable as Arraez and miranda split 1st and 3rd. Martin is still a prospect and with Brooks Lee that makes Steer expendable. Correa isn't signing here long term so if they are going to spend assets, now is the time to do it.

Like all trades it is a bittersweet result.  I was fine giving up Steer he was going to need to be added to the 40 man and there wasn't a ton of room to play him and there are guys coming up behind him.  Hajjar is a nice arm but a ways a way and I think there is reliever risk there.  Always hate losing good lefties of which the Twins now have virtually none left.  The gut punch though is Strand.  He doesn't need to be added for a while and he has those Miranda bat to ball skills that likely will make him an elite hitter.  He could be the Reds next Joey Votto IMO.  I really think he might be that good.  If they hadn't included him I would right as rain with this trade but IMO they got hijacked on this one.

I sure hope Mahle is as good as advertised because Cinci got a haul there.  Can't say the Twins are not in it to win it with two very good pitchers added to the roster.  I sure hope these moves pay off short and longer term. Man that must have been one heck of a draft in 2021 as other teams picked 4 of the 5 players off of it already.

In my opinion, they still have the best lefty, Prielipp.  Expect they felt they were ok trading the two lefties and Steer/E-S after making their top two picks last month.

So...are all of the punt on 2022.  And sell everything fans gone now...I hope.

Nah, we will just hang around and watch this make no difference in October, if we even get that far. These are (maybe) win the division moves, not seriously challenge for a world series moves.

I was thinking that the trade for Mahle adds additional pressure on Larnach, Kirilloff, Miranda, Lewis and Martin to get/stay healthy and be solid big league contributors.

While it does, it is much harder to find top of the rotation starters than position players, so I'm good with the trades made today thus far.

The Twins gave up a lot.  A lot.  I could stomach this for Castillo, but it's going to have to go really well for this to make sense for me with Mahle.

Castillo would have cost more, based on what the Reds ended up getting for him, and when you look at the two of them as a comps...they're not that far apart. yes, Castillo has been better overall, but Castillo is also 2 years older. Mahle's first season was a cup of coffee (a very promising one, but it was 4 games). His 2nd season (first full) he struggled, but since then he's been very good, even with that crappy band box of a park to throw in. Mahle & Castillo have basically the same K/9 & BB/9 over their careers, and the H/9 have been very similar over the last 3 seasons as well. Castillo has a solid edge in terms of keeping the ball in the park, but Mahle's numbers there are hardly disastrous.

The twins system right now is marked by a lot of depth, but less high-end talent, which is one of the reasons why it feels like we gave up a lot: there's not as much difference between our #6 prospect and our #16 prospect. But we traded from positions of strength (bat first 2B-3B types) and the pitcher we gave up will need things to keep going his way consistently to get that cup of coffee by 2024 and was unlikely to be a serious factor until 2025. And we've all seen how easy it is for a pitching prospect to get derailed fast by injury or ineffectiveness. All it takes is finding out that your 3rd pitch that worked just fine in A-ball can't get AA guys out consistently. Or spending 2 months on the IL with a ding in your shoulder.

I was a big fan of CES and he's the prospect I hate to see go...but you gotta give to get and the other great thing in this is the twins turned their 4th round pick into a major trade asset. If the twins can keep developing the players they're drafting in rounds 3 & 4 (like Steer & CES), they'll be able to keep bringing in players to fill holes in the MLB team and make trades as needed, even if their farm system isn't getting ranked as highly.

I hope Mahle is worth it. At least he can't break Buxton's hand again with his lack of control. I always am leary when the argument for the player is that he should be better than he has been if only he............ this time..... insn't pitching in Cincy half the games. I hope it works out for us. I hope he proves it. That was a lot to give up for the same amount of time that the reasoning was we had to trade Berrios with a year and a half of control left.

The front office is addressing what needs to be addressed.

The White Sox and Guardians haven't done much. The Twins post season stock has risen dramatically.

Gee, I hope Carlos Correa is as impressed as I am.

Well, the Gaurdians gave up a catcher that they wouldn't even let play in the show.......

I hope Correa is so impressed he starts earning his $35 million, and shows up way more often.

And then getting to keep them for about half the seasons that an actual draftee might be available to the team.

IOW, not really that comparable.  Greater certainty, for a shorter burn time.  We cashed in one kind of thing, for a very different kind.

I feel a real inability to judge these trades. They don't feel as exciting as I wish they did, but the reality is I only know about our prospects from what I read on these pages. On the other hand I also only know about the players we are acquiring from reading the same pages so all I can say is at the end of the year will be time to judge the trades and right now it's too early. None of the names jump out as stars, so the role they play and how they step up is still to be determined.

A good day. FO made some big moves, and I think they got what they wanted without overpaying. A solid foundation for a playoff run next year too. Let's go!

I agree with your assessment. Just think what we posters would be writing (myself included) if the Twins had done nothing (like the White Sox and Guardians).

These pages can be very frustrating to read.  I keep reading, "Twins gave up a lot to get Mahle".  But 2 days ago people were begging the Twins to be aggressive and make trades to make them better.  It seems the only way people would truly be happy is if the Twins only traded office supplies for Mahle.  Maybe we as fans aren't used to actually making meaningful trades at the deadline and giving up prospects.  Yeah, it sucks the Twins won't be able to possibly get to see the prospects possibly become meaningful contributors to the major league club, but that isn't guaranteed.  I seem to remember a few years ago when they Traded Palacios for Odorizzi people were upset.  Well, Palacios didn't develop as fast as people thought he would, and is now back in the org but still in AAA.  That's my long way of saying, I like the trade and while it stinks to give up prospects, that is what good teams do at the deadline.  It's better than being on the other end of the deal.

I just can't get over the folks that think this was a good move.  This team is going nowhere.  What on Earth are you people watching besides the actual games themselves.   This was such a bad trade in itself.  We gave up way too much.   CES is going to haunt us like David Ortiz.
