Montas Trade

imagine landing the best free agent and then doing absolutely nothing else outside of replacing Berrios with Gray and thinking that’s good enough when the pitching was a mess last year and then just giving up at the trade deadline.

Yes, I know the farm is an injured mess right now but they put themselves in this spot 2 years in a row now. Fool me once, shame on you, fool me twice shame on me for thinking it may be better. They don’t deserve a third try.

The Yankees are acquiring Frankie Montas and Lou Trivino from the Athletics, per Jack Curry of YES Network. In exchange, the Athletics will receive pitchers JP Sears, Ken Waldichuk and Luis Medina, as well as second baseman Cooper Bowman, also from Curry.

1 top 100 prospect and some average guys. Falvey will claim how overpriced that was.

I agree that the Yankees did better than Seattle did in their trade.  I hope this means the other pitchers wont cost as much and that the Seattle trade was the outlier.   I hope we get something done and soon.

What is done is done, time to move on to the rest of the season, which it seems, the Twins owners are going to try to see just how good or bad, what they have is.

Mahle, Rodon, Lopez still available. Lots of relievers still out there.

Twins aren't going to send any from their top 7-8 prospects I don't think when this team has shown how streaky/average they are.

Yankees get Montas and Trevino with 4 player package. Per MlB Pipeline, their #5, 10, 20, and 21 prospects, 3 pitchers and a 2B, all early to mid 20's. Two drafted by NY, one obtained via trade, one international free agent signing.

Direct comp to Twins would be a package of:

5: Canterino

10: Medina

20: Soulaire

21: Raya

    3 pitchers, 1 middle IF/2B.

Should Twins have offered this for Montas/Trevino?

Did they, and did Oak pass?

love to see one of the most exciting trade candidates of the season end up with the most predictable team possible. When the dust clears I hope the Yankees system is so gutted that their top prospect is Joe Shlabotnik.

It's rarely been great. They keep 1-2 good ones per year and deal the rest. Most are over-rated by east coast media.

Yeah, I'm not sure if I'd blame the media, but the East Coast teams do get their prospects more press for sure. Typically those Yankee prospects do tend to have inflated value.

I wasn't high on Montas anyway ... at least not high enough that I would try to outbid the Yankees on that. But ... if we just do nothing ... that will very much disappoint me and I will call into question just what is going on with the FO.

I think you can start calling.

Agreed. I’m much more interested in Pablo Lopez (if he’s really available for trade), and Mahle. There’s still time to make some moves. At the very least for bullpen help. If we do nothing, totally agree. It’s time to question what the FO is doing and if they’re the right people leading the organization.

how are you choosing the comparison?

Ober would be in comparison to Sears both MLB pitchers that have had some success.  Balazovic has been a top 100 prospect similar to Waldichuck.  Medina and Varland both top 12 prospects in organization have some upside.  Bowman is a second baseman their number 22 prospect.  Seems to line up fairly well with Julien.

Yankee prospects always project to be so much better than they are also. That said, I bet we didn't have 2 pitchers that Oakland liked. Alot of our better pitching prospects are hurt.

I was just wondering to myself when I saw the return if the injuries to our pitching prospects/rookie pitchers this year has impacted our ability to trade for some of these SPs

It feels like the Yankees gave up a pretty light package, especially considering what the Mariners gave up to get Castillo.

That is the difference of getting players that are MLB players and at higher levels,  vs players rated high but in A or high A ball.  I If you trade prospects from the lower levels they don't have the same value as MLB level players or AAA players because they have a higher level of flaming out.  Actually these packages are closer than you think based on that.

Doesn't matter if they did, the Yankees offered and traded better players. The 2 pitchers the As got are at or close to MLB ready - most if not all of our better prospects are in A+ ball or lower. We didn't get Montas because the Yankees made a better offer. Simple as that.
