Donaldson being Josh.

I remember Anderson calling himself the next Jackie Robinson. I remember because I have disliked Anderson since reading that. I though he was a word that is usually filtered out on many sites. Good luck finding the quote by Anderson.  Anderson shouldn’t complain, they are his words. Now wether or not it is a joke could be debatable. Anderson still has done nothing to make himself the next Jackie Robinson. It would not be beyond many people to remind Anderson of that. Every catcher should be asking Anderson if he said that

Yeah...I think this shows why Donaldson wears out his welcome in places. I'm sure he didn't think he was saying anything offensive, and just thought he was bustin' Anderson's balls a little. But that's where Donaldson's cluelessness drops in: he has no idea how someone might find that offensive and racist. And it doesn't matter what you or I think, it's what Anderson perceives. And Donaldson doesn't know him well enough and have the relationship where he gets to say things like to him.

Short version: Donaldson is an ass. Garbage like this is a reason to be glad he's no longer a Twin.

MLB is opening an investigation. I think it is one of these issues that regardless of Donaldson’s original intent, that this has gone on for several years is unacceptable. I look for Donaldson to be suspended. He also did not help himself with his half hearted apology after the game. The first link is an excellent article on this issue.

Yeah, I don't think Donaldson was making a deliberate racial attack on Anderson, I just think he was being sort of insensitive and giving no thought whatsoever to how Anderson would take it. I don't think that makes him a monster, but it also doesn't make it OK. I think that makes him kind of an a-hole who needs to learn when to keep his mouth shut and why.

If you're going to refer to yourself as "today's Jackie Robinson," in any context, you're inviting mockery (and probably rightfully so.) I think this dust up is just giving those who already don't like Donaldson (I wouldn't count myself as a member of his fan club) another wave to ride. What's funny to me, is that TA is JD, in that he plays the game in a similar fashion, i.e. talking plenty of s*** and just being generally irritating from an opposing fan's perspective. I don't see any reason to draw a line and proclaim right or wrong when it comes to either of these two.

Donaldson is a dick and Anderson is a a dumbass.  No one in today's game should EVER compare himself to Jackie Robinson.  And no one should give Anderson what he wants by responding to his drivel.(which is exactly what Donaldson did)What a couple of losers.  Screw them both.  Put them in a cage and let them eat each other.

There's nothing racist about this and I commend Josh for calling out Tim for being an idiot. Anderson self proclaimed himself today's Jackie Robinson. The arrogance of that comment deserves to be made fun of by all his opponents and fans. Just another case of self righteous idiots trying to find racism where there isn't any. Makes me sick.

Totally agree. I think LaRussa, the guy that was convicted of DUI and selfishly endangered everyone on the roads he shared and created a 2 ton 30-70 mph weapon, is the fire stoker here, and he really doesn't have a base to throw flames from.

"77-year-old Tony La Russa was the first to allege Donaldson made a racist remark directed at Anderson, which caused the confrontation, but wouldn’t elaborate further. And not to give La Russa the “seal of approval” here, but a guy who’s been in MLB since 1963 should probably be trusted when he says something of that magnitude."

I guess the author thinks that his complete history is not needed.

Anderson being a pompous moron about a racial issue has little to go with Donaldson’s issue of being a pompous moron.

The fact that it wasn’t in any way a hill Donaldson had any right to plant a flag on just shows how little Donaldson actually cared about the matter.

He did it to provoke, not because Jackie Robinson meant anything to him.

Asking a reporter who they work for, and stating that you're only going to speak to Chicago media before labeling the incident kinda sums it all up. There's plenty of pearl clutching going on.

My opinion is if Donaldson has called Anderson "Jackie" for the past four years as he has stated and Anderson never had a problem with it then Anderson is just looking to be a victim and play the race card.

If Anderson previously had told Donaldson it was disrespectful and Donaldson continued to call him "Jackie" then Donaldson is just an ass.

This post is several layers of stupid.  There's no better way to say it.

You should try less hard to be offended by racism, snowflake.

Racism exists everywhere sadly.  Donaldson is an idiot for playing into Anderson's comment.  It shows his lack of understanding regarding the issue.  I would have just said, "we are beating you ass today".  And Anderson calling himself a modern day Jackie Robinson.....LOL   What the hell does that even mean?

Even if Donaldson thought it was a joke....why would joking there be appropriate?  You kneed him off a base and have stirred trouble for years, a joke like that isn't going to be well-received.  You're at best an idiot to try and employ it there in the middle of a brawl.

The only way the "Jackie" comment gets under Anderson's skin is the remark is laced with racial overtones, whether Donaldson is a racist or not.

Donaldson knew why that comment would get under Anderson's skin; and that's precisely why he said it.  (I mean it's from 2019, if it was innocent jarring, why go back so long?)

Much ado about nothing until it was exploited by Tony La Russa to rally his troops.  It seemed to work, at least for the short-term.  They swept the Yanks on Sunday.  That Tony is a sly one!

This rings true to me. In fairness, I have hated JD as long as I’ve been aware of him and I’m inclined to pile on him any time he gives me a chance to do so, but I can’t find reason to pick on him here.

If TA admires/respects/appreciates what Jackie Robinson did, he wouldn’t make such a silly comparison. If there were any racism here, it’d be on Tim.

The real sin here is minimizing what Jackie Robinson accomplished in the face of hatred and overt persecution.

Oh well. Every day we’re learning. Let’s just love and respect our neighbors -and maybe breathe a sigh of relief that Yankees & Sox fans get this distraction while our Twins just keep piling up wins!

hahaha.  Reminds me of that animation "celebrity death match" that used to air on MTV from 1998-2007.

Josh Donaldson is an ego just like almost every star athlete.  I never liked his play as a Twin anyways as he never produced enough to support that massive deal he signed.  I don't find his statement racist, idiotic YES, but Racist no.  It's really no different than NBA players Larry Bird, Dirk Nowitzki, etc. the "great white hope."

On something like this we should all be cognizant of others and Anderson should just brush it off.  So many fans yell harsh stuff all the time.  I am sure Anderson has thicker skin.

I am not defending Josh as he should watch what he says.

I think Donaldson should be more cognizant of others and understand what he's saying and have some consideration for how what he says might be perceived as a very differently than what might have been his intent. It doesn't matter that Anderson is also kind of an idiot, or that LaRussa is a scumbag with a litany of poor decisions in his past that he's paid very little (if any) price for...Donaldson was intentionally being an ass, and in his attempt to needle someone and mess with their head, he may have crossed a line. How people may feel about his actual words will vary widely...but at least some people, including the person they were directed towards saw them as being tied to race. The fact that Donaldson was either a) not cognizant of that possibility, or b) didn't care doesn't really speak very well for him.

The context in which Tim Anderson refers to himself as the new Jackie Robinson is that TA is trying to introduce more participants to baseball in the inner cities of America. Basketball and Football has replaced Baseball and he's trying to turn that around. That's admirable. But Donaldson is a Shi@ stirrer. I don't think he was being racist. He's been talking about it for 3 years now. Anderson obviously got fed up, but I think that Donaldson dropping his knee the week prior had more to do with it than the Jackie comment. Throw dinosaur Larussa into the mix and you've got spontaneous combustion. But hey, it rallied his troops for a couple game. As stated earlier by others. Much ado about nothing.

Agreed, that was my point about drawing a line. Giving the benefit of the doubt to either side in this s*** flinging contest is ahhhh.....yeah.

Donaldson is too much of a diva, getting rid of him and that contract was a huge chemistry boost for the team.

Whether or not Donaldson is a racist, or if he meant anything along those lines with his comment to Anderson, is anyone's guess. Maybe he did, maybe he didn't. Bottom line is...you just can't say that type of thing no matter what. Joking or not. What I do think is.....he's a first class jerk and probably not the nicest guy in the clubhouse or dug out. The kind of guy you just don't want to be around. His rep is well known and well documented. I'm so glad he's not with us anymore. I'm more than happy to let him be some other teams problem.

Donaldson has been suspended 1 game (he has appealed the suspension) and fined an undisclosed amount. Also has been placed on the COVID-19 injured list today.
