Twins acquire SP Sonny Gray

I like this trade. Sure, Petty has a lot of potential, but still has a long ways to go to even reach the majors, let alone be good. Sonny Gray is a solid #2 starter who can be an All-Star at his best. Still need some more pieces, but happy to see the front office not giving up on this year!

Shocking. I really don't understand the plan. If it is too compete, why not sign a pitcher that is good before? I thought they were building for the future, but the last two days are all about the present.

If they were rebuilding, we'd see them jettison a lot more veterans than they have. I'm not sure what moves you are referring that suggests they were building for the future beyond trading Berrios.

Interesting. Gray is a proven, quality starter. He only has two years of team control, though. If the Twins are hoping to compete in 2023 and take the team option for 2023 then I like the trade. Petty is a long way off from the majors (probably 2024 or 2025). However, if they do not plan to compete in 2023 then this trade makes no sense. If they’re trying to compete in 2023, they better commit to it.

Overall, a pleasant surprise.

Okay, I like this deal a lot.

The Twins gain:
Simeon Woods-Richardson
Austin Martin
Sonny Gray for two seasons

The Twins lose:
Jose Berrios for one season
Chase Petty

That's an outstanding return. This is the deal I've been waiting for since the Berrios trade.

Sitting out free agency despite being way under last year's budget.

Can't say I love this move.  Why not just grab Pineda again his ERA was better and you don't have to give up a flame throwing asset? I mean the Yankee's unloaded Gray as fast as they could because they didn't see him as playoff pitcher or pitcher who could survive their division.  This strikes me as a horrible move. Gray looks like pitcher in decline. I don't think the Twins FO can be trusted to make trades anymore.  This just boggles my mind.

What is the value of pick 26? After 57 years of drafting there has been one star player picked in that spot in Alan Trammell. The next best with 27 career WAR is Dave Henderson and then 17 career WAR in Dan Plesac. After that you have two in the 4-5 range in Brent Gates and Jeremy Bonderman. Gray projects in that range for the two years he will be a Twin. The chance of a number 26 pick having a significant career is under 10%.

Of course you make this trade particularly for a starting pitcher. Let’s make another.

Face value - I really like this trade. I have been wanting the Twins to go after Gray for years, and now we've got him for affordable rates at $10M and $12M for 2022 and 2023. I like adding him rather than going after guys like Pineda and Cueto.

Losing Petty hurts, but he's years away from relevance and the odds of him panning out aren't all that high. Even better, moving just one prospect for Gray presents a considerable risk for Cincinnati, so say if Petty's career gets sidetracked by injuries (see Span for Meyer trade), the trade is complete loss for the Reds.

More moves like this, please! We have a considerable glut of pitching prospects, but if the aim is to win now, let's make more trades like this one.

Jon Heyman of the MLB Network reports that the Twins are still looking to add another starting pitcher after acquiring Sonny Gray from the Reds.

The Twins rotation could certainly use some help after the departure of Jose Berrios last season and losing Kenta Maeda to injury. Sonny Gray is the team's de facto "ace" at the moment with Dylan Bundy, Bailey Ober, Joey Ryan, and Randy Dobnak likely to fill in the rest of the starting five.

It looks like they're likely going to add one more arm to the Gray-Bundy-Ober-Ryan rotation. It's an underwhelming unit, but I feel somewhat better with Gray and if the next guy isn't just a placeholder. I think Ober and Ryan can at least be decent #4/5 guys.

Yes, they need more pitching and yes, Petty is years away. I think a key factor is how many good or better prospects are ahead of him.  I understand that all of the prospects won’t pan out and that one never has enough pitching, but with both trades they added back a pitching prospect closer to the majors than Petty.

Yeah I thought about that too.  I guess they must feel Henriquez is Petty's replacement and he is much closer to ready.  Still I don't love losing Petty even if Gray is a solid pitcher, but too your point yes they essentially replaced what they  lost and moved up the time line to boot which is not a horrible play.

They also have quite the pitching pipeline to deal with right now so I guess they felt the trade was a risk worth taking to shore up this years rotation.  If the team does not perform and Gray does they could still do a deadline deal as well so all is not lost.  I just really liked Petty's potential.
