It’s always thrilling when your team snatches victory from the jaws of victory, as the Twins did yesterday afternoon at Target Field against the Red Sox. The Twins lost 3 of 4 in the series, but were 1-0 in games played in the sunshine.

That’s a good sign, right?

There will be plenty of sun out in LA this weekend for the three game series against the Angels.

Here I have selected five Twins-Halos memorable moments to think back on, from over the years:

1. May 23, 2019: Draining the Opposition
Seems like so long ago. The Twins laid waste to the Angels 16-7 to complete a three game sweep in LA and on their way to a 8.0 game lead in the standings. This game was actually played on a scheduled off day, after the field was unable to drain some heavy rains that fell prior to the first pitch the night before.

2. May 8, 1984: Greatness Arrives
A promising young outfielder makes his debut for the Twins in Anaheim, and grounds out in his first at bat. Yet he would finish the game with four hits. Few in baseball were able to collect hits in bunches like Kirby Puckett was.

3. Sept. 2, 2011: More Greatness
Another promising young outfielder makes his 80th career plate appearance, and first against the Twins, drawing a base on balls in the 9th inning of a Twins win. You may have heard of him: Mike Trout. Bonus points if you can guess the name of the Twins relief pitcher who faced him that evening. (Answer below.)

4. August 3, 1987: How to Get Ejected from a Baseball Game
The Twins-Angels game was tied 2-2 in the 4th, when home plate umpire (and great St. Paul guy) Tim Tschida wanted to take a look at the baseballs Joe Niekro was serving up to Angels hitters. There was a confab on the mound, and, well…



The Twins went on to win 11-3. The tired and bored but suddenly interested reaction of Steve Palermo, arms folded and hat off, is timeless.

5. October 12, 2002: The Closest We Have Come
This is the deepest into the postseason the Twins have reached since 1991. It was the 2002 American League Championship Series, the Twins trailing the Angels 2 games to 1, and a pitchers duel in Game 4. Brad Radke had pitched six scoreless innings, but John Lackey had matched him frame for frame, pitching six scoreless innings himself, and then setting the Twins down in the top of the 7th.

And when in Anaheim, late in the game, when the 7th inning stretch comes, you know it well, the scourge of baseball, …

That was one darn cute puppy, all right, but I sat through the entire 2:27 running time and didn't see doggo actually do anything cute. Just sat there the whole time on-screen. Please check your link.

The one bright spot in the first 13 games has been the rotation, at least in the first 5 innings.  After a disastrous home stand, Twins fly to West Coast hoping to right the ship.  Hate to pile on Thorpe, but he has consistenytly shown nothing in previous major league starts.  Why aren't we going with Shoemacher on 4 days rest??  Is this another in a long line of Rocky moves this season?  Together with resting Donaldson after one start  this pattern of babying these major leaguers is hard to take on a veteran team that has yet to get any momentum going.

My "I was at THAT game story" from around that same time, I was at the first Cubs game under the lights - 8/8/88. Bill Murray was up in the booth with Harry Caray, serenading the fans, everyone was having a blast. I believe Phil Bradley led off the game with an HR for the Phillies....before it got rained out. Mark Grace was a rookie that year and he and a bunch of Cubs players went out and slid on the rain tarps much to the delight of the fans after it had been officially called.

 

Best game I've been to that never officially happened.

Because due to the DH, you'll have SP pile up starting tomorrow (Happ on 3 days tomorrow, Maeda on 3 days Sunday).  By doing this today, you keep Happ and Maeda on regular rest, and buy an extra day for Shoemaker.

Thorp is starting tonight. Dobnak threw 3 innings in relief Tuesday.

 

Also, if you use Dobnak to start today, he probably only gives you 3, which means you either have to use 4-6 guys out of your bullpen, or you need Thorpe for long relief anyways, so Thorpe was always (in all likelihood), going to need to pitch tonight anyways.  I would argue that maybe instead you use Thorpe as your second starter for the DH on Wednesday, but maybe they didn't want to miss with Berrios' rhythm, perhaps they were desperate to get win(s), and wanted their two best guys to go, or they wanted to get a look at Kiriloff without having to use the kind of option that relegates him to the alternate site for 10 days after being sent back down.

 

This also suggests that Dobnak will spend all his time in the bullpen until a starter gets hurt.

Buxton's still out of the lineup. As I speculated yesterday, his hamstring is likely worse than what the beat writers were saying on Wednesday...

Yeah I don't understand why Thorpe didn't go in the DHer. Seemed to make more sense.

My "I was at that game" is when a struggles-to-jog Jim Thome hit a ball off the corner of the right field wall of Target Field, and ended up with a triple.  Just absolute joy from the crowd

In Rocco-speak, this could mean anything from being available to pinch-hit tonight, to a 10-day IL stint... I sure hope it's closer to the former than the latter. I am very sick of seeing Jake Cave try to hit against lefties and play CF.

Rocco, if you’re reading this, Garver at 1st and Jeffers at catcher please.

we're trying to force both Garver and Jeffers into the lineup why?

 

To get Jeffers' bat into the lineup? Garver's stone hands into the infield defense?

Because if anyone seems to need to be benched for a bit, it's Sano. If both get regular playing time then maybe they'll both start to hit?
