Ok. Sorry to hear about Cave’s injury. Maybe it explains why he can’t hit and then when he heals up, he could go back to the player he was in 2018 and 2019. That player actually has some value on a major-league roster as compared to what we’ve seen from him in 2020 and 2021. Hope it heals up well. Back problems are no fun.

I keep coming here waiting for the news that Sano has been sent down or DFA’d. Disappointed again.

There’s really no point in it. Sano can’t be sent down and the Twins are on the hook if he clears waivers and another team picks him up.

If the Twins had someone ready to take his spot, maybe it’d be worth the DFA but they really don’t. Do we really care if they field Sano or Rooker? I don’t, and frankly I’d rather see Sano for at least a little while longer, as he has a much higher ceiling and isn’t that much older than Brent.

I don’t understand the transactions today. Bailey Ober was already on the 40 man as was Stashak. Therefore, it was not necessary to DFA Derrick Law unless there is another transaction that has not been announced. Is this correct.

Not sure but Law is probably out of options.

They really must not like what they're seeing from Randy because he continues to be passed over time and time again.

Isn't he being stretched out? Based on his last start he isn't quite ready to go 80+ pitches. Maybe in another week or 10 days he'll be there.

Ah, I didn't realize his pitch limit was still that restrained. That could easily be the case.

I stand somewhat corrected. Looks like he's up to mid-80s for pitch count but maybe they want him to go 1-2 more starts. I'd hope to seem in a week or two if he's still pitching well. I've seen enough out of Shoemaker and Happ in the rotation.

Yeah, I think Dobnak is stretched out as much, if not more than Thorpe.

Dobnak was regularly throwing 40+ pitches in relief throughout April, and now in May has thrown 59, 81, and 87 pitches in regular turns through the AAA rotation.

Thorpe had a 60 pitch start and a 10 pitch relief appearance in April -- that's it. Now in May, he's had an 80 pitch start in MLB, followed by relief appearances of 46 and 32 pitches at AAA. Not sure what the plan is for him, but they don't seem too eager to give him a regular turn.

I honestly read the situation as they have confidence in Dobnak but just want him to tighten up a couple things before sending him to the MLB rotation. Thorpe, it seems like they don't know what to do with him and are just bouncing him around without a plan.

The training staff across the river is working on him even as we speak.stretch-stretch-armstrong-30cm.jpeg

I think the plan is to milk the extra option year by using him as the 6th starter/swingman/shuttle. Then next year, if he performs this year, he slides into Happ's spot.

Another potential way of thinking of the Thorpe vs. Dobnak -- who do you call up discussion is to say that they called up Thorpe for the seven-inning doubleheader game, figuring that Dobnak will get further stretched out for when they need someone to start nine-inning games. Shoemaker probably bought himself at least another start today, particularly with Pineda going down for a start or two.

EDIT TO ADD:

With Pineda missing the start on the 18th and not going on the IL until the 19th, I don't think they can back date all the way back to the 13th. They can only back date three days to the 16th, if I understand it correctly.

So now with Berrios/Thorpe on the 20th (Thursday) and Maeda on the 21st (Friday), they can either go with Happ on Saturday and Ober on Sunday OR they could go with Dobnak on five days rest on Saturday and give Happ an extra day to go on Sunday. Either way, they have Shoemaker, Berrios and (hopefully) Pineda next week for Baltimore.

So, while they didn't know that Pineda was going to go on the IL, obviously, I think they covered their bases well.

Who get the start on 5/20. I wonder if Thorpe will get another shot that day.

Dobnak just started for St Paul today, so we’d presumably choose Thorpe for Thursday’s doubleheader.

According to the Twins website, it's Thorpe for game 1 ... but who knows? Haven't seen an official announcement.

Might there be some rules about calling folkup and sending folk down they are planning around?

I imagine they will keep Dobnak up once they call him up, whereas the 27th player for a double header requires someone to be sent down afterwards?

Someone has to be sent down after a doubleheader, but it doesn't have to be the 27th player added.

Also, serving as a 27th player does not reset the 10-day minimum required for optional assignments. (And both Thorpe and Dobnak are past 10 days on their current assignments, so either could stay up after the doubleheader if the Twins wanted.)

I think they are simply giving Dobnak regular turns in the AAA rotation, which didn't line up with him making this start, while Thorpe is just being deployed as a swingman.

With Pineda missing a start and no off days until the 27th either Thorpe or Ober will get another chance unless the Twins switch out Dobnak for one of them. Maeda is also not 100%, so maybe all of those guys will get at ;least one start.

Dobnak is coming up to start today, corresponding move has not been decided. Thorpe returned to AAA as the 27th man. Ober still remains on the team. Also, Kirilloff should be ready to be activated with the way he's hitting the ball at AAA. Garlick or Refsnyder may be DFA'd to make room for him.
