Boston getting cold feet - Graterol's health puts blockbuster on pause

Interesting read from Scott Boris (Gaterol's agent) on MLBtraderumors.  Of course it is his interest to have Gaterol defined as a starting pitcher, but still he claims medical records show nothing of concern, and the extension of his thoughts are that Boston after being roasted is trying to extract more from the deal.

Biggest concern is with the small number of inning Gaterol has pitched, that trying to get him to over 100, may be risking more injury, that is one of the reasons the Twins wanted him in the bullpen.

In this case if their is a question, the commissioner should order an independent medical examination of Gaterol's shoulder (this is because of the claim of wanting the trade adjustment), and if nothing found order the trade to go forward.  You should not be able 24 hours later to claim medical issues, because you made a bad deal.

I'm blown away, frankly, that major sources aren't giving us continuous updates. This is a deal involving two of the premier teams in the league in Boston and LAD, regarding a former MVP.

And....we're just getting crickets and the occasional speculative tweet from unverified or fan accounts. I'd honestly expect updates on this every 15 minutes, but it's literally been 24 hours since anything useful has come out.

The best way to support Graterol and show they have confidence in him is to leave the deal now. The worst way is to replace him in the deal.

Maeda is a good starting pitcher but not a rare commodity. If it takes more to acquire a pitcher let’s go get someone else and pay more.

The longer it drags out more complicated it becomes w/ arbitration & ST. The problem still exist as from the beginning. Boston wants too much & LA doesn`t want to give it to them. W/o MN to bail them out, it`s not going anywhere. MN should`ve gotten involved w/ this mess to begin with. There`s nothing wrong w/ Graterol`s arm except it need to be stretched out w/ time. His medical statis is clean & shouldn`t be a excuse for Boston to back out on the deal. It`s a black mark on their name. In all practicality they got the best part of the deal the way it stands

Since it is taking this long and Boston apparently isn't getting what they want from the Twins I have to believe Boston is shopping Maeda around and looking for some other team to pay their high price.  I honestly can't think of anyone else that would give up a front of the rotation type top 100 prospect for Meada. Maybe I am way off on that assumption but young pitching is hard to tear away from teams.

Graterol was the best return for Maeda for 2 reasons.  One is I think the Twins value Maeda more than any other team,  I think the Twins actually think they can make him into a solid number 2 and possibly a low end 1.  Graterol has the highest upside of any pitcher that the red sox can get for Maeda, the issue is he has some previous health concerns, it was why they got him in the first place.   My guess is the Twins will remain in, because based on everything I have seen the Red Sox still want Graterol.  If thats the case The Red Sox, take the deal as is or get an extra throw in most likely from Dodgers, maybe from the Twins.

Boston is shopping Maeda around?

Maeda belongs to the Dodgers, not the Red Sox.

I think what he's suggesting is that the Sox are going to other teams and asking for prospect X for Maeda and then substitute that team into the trade and remove the Twins.

Graterol has the highest upside of any pitcher that the red sox can get for Maeda

To echo what Chief said, Maeda is a Dodger. The Red Sox don't have Maeda, nor will they automatically get Maeda if the Twins pull out of this deal. At this time I can't imagine the Sox are shopping or looking for a return on a player that's not on their team.

The only players the Red Sox may actively be shopping are Price and Betts at this time.

It would be really interesting to find out if the Red Sox actually found something in the medicals or if it's just a response to the fan outrage. Boras and the Twins probably think the former. I'm not sure they can do it since each team has their own doctor and their own risk valuation but it would be nice if Boras filed a grievance against Boston and the commissioner actually looked into this.

There's a perfectly good reason the Twins have not been (were not) in a hurry to walk away from this. Graterol isn't a starter. Maeda is. And Maeda's contract is a perfect fit for the Twins, given the Twins remain desperate for starting pitching beyond 2020. We have both the Twins and the Red Sox staring us right in the eye and saying Graterol isn't going to be a starting pitcher. I'd rather we were talking a corner outfield prospect...but, I've moved beyond Graterol as a "front-of-rotation" starter prospect quite a while ago, while many here apparently haven't gotten there yet, despite mounting...and mounting...evidence.

I believe the majority of people on this forum will not be happy with any type of trade involving prospects but fail to mention most of you were screaming at the top of your lungs to dump some for starting pitching.

I can not speak for everyone on this board. The Twins are in desperate need of top of the rotation starters. They have not been able to attract anyone via free agency. They have a surplus of corner outfielders in their system. The trade that makes sense is outfielders for pitching.

Gaterol for Maeda seems like a fair trade. I don’t like it but understand that our front office thinks his future is as a reliever. Substituting anyone of our other top pitching prospects does not make sense because they could develop into top of the rotation starters.

If the Twins end up with Graterol back, I hope they put him back into the rotation purely out of spite.

You keep Grate out of the rotation. He is best used in the bullpen because of his delivery and the strain he puts on his shoulder because of it.

First off you are naive to think that The Red Sox and Dodgers are not calling other teams to see what could possibly be had for Maeda. This is essentially a 3 team trade. If the Red Sox want player A, they may call up and say we need someone else to fill in for our trade,  would you be interested in trading him to us? The current value is Maeda or ABC even though its from another team.

Also it doesn't matter who calls who, and I never stated that in the above post.  What I said is if Maeda is currently the piece to get another prospect, Graterol is the highest prospect that would eventually go to the Red Sox.  I also believe the Red Sox still truly like Graterol they are just trying to get an extra piece to save face after getting roasted.

it's certainly possible, probable even, the Dodgers are trying to find another team to take Maeda.

I'm pretty confident Boston isnt.

I'm not saying the Dodgers aren't.  However I fully disagree that the Red Sox are not making preliminary calls to other teams checking to see if prospects they like could possibly be thrown into the trade.   It would be a divide and conquer strategy.  The other issue is they cannot finalize a trade, but they could easily relay the information to the Dodgers to say, Hey I think the Marlins may be interested in getting involved and they would be willing to send us prospect A potentially for Maeda.  Maybe this is an opportunity for us to resolve this trade.

Red Sox fans can't actually believe that David Price has positive value do they???? So Verdugo and Graterol are a very good return for one season of Mookie Betts who will not at this time resign with Boston.

The wrong part of this whole deal is the RedSox treatment and tarnishing of a player, Graterol, who is not even their's yet. Douche organization.

I keep coming back every hour, or less, to see if there has been a resolution.

Fortunately, the longer this goes on the more likely it is true that when/if Boston suggested replacing Graterol with Balazovic the Twins response was not only no, but he.....ck no.

I wonder if the Twins are able at this point to say, we are done with this exercise, no deal for us?  Or are they obligated to keep Graterol on the table?  And if so, for how long?

I don’t think they are obligated to do anything and wish, at this point, they’d just walk away. This is no way to start things off. And I hope someone from the Twins has talked to Graterol at this point, too, just to check in with him and see how he’s doing. I get that it’s a business but I think this mess made it beyond that

I really doubt Boston was caught off guard by fan reaction. And I also suspect the Betts part of the deal is still almost certain to go through, and I doubt that swapping Balazovic for Graterol would make any difference in the Red Sox fan reaction.

They are most definitely shopping around but no one is going to give Boston a ML ready top 100 pitching prospect for Maeda they are dreaming. Actually Graterol is too good for them. Hope it turns around & bite them. I`m glad our FO isn`t listening to them (I hope that`s true). Boston`ll wake up & think this a pretty good deal but we pull the plug now & let them pay for their sins. They are big market able to throw their $ around let them have Betts 1 more year, eat Price`s salary & pay their luxury tax

Bring Graterol home so he can get ready physically. mentally & emotionally for this season Baldelli put your arms around him & tell him we`re glad to have you back!!!!!
