Doogie has chimed in about the 40-man spot (Twitter is blocked at work, so I can't embed it here). When asked if it was Harper, Doogie responded:

"No official announcement yet. A pitcher makes the most sense, and he is atop the logical list."

Hey John Bonnes! I hope he isn't #24. Cmon Rosie...

#24....Guess he couldn't get Rosario to give up #20.

Rosie, a lifelong Twin who has been in this organization his entire career is a border-line All-Star who hit 32 HR last year and drove in 109. Eddie's earned the right to keep his number on this team, if he wants it.

I thought the answer regarding the number was interesting. He seemed a bit cagey. Was he intimating that he's negotiating with Rosie, or that he knows that Rosie won't be around on opening day anyways?

I assume it's the former. He probably hasn't talked to Rosie yet but wants to.

He's never been an all star though. Josh Donaldson is a three time all star and won an MVP. Donaldson has 45 career WAR.  Maybe neither of them really care but if I was Rosie I'd let him take #20.

Regarding Harper, it seems that when teams want to keep a player, they don't announce the DFA and then do an outright assignment, if the player isn't claimed. If they are going to release the player anyway, then they announce the DFA immediately. I suspect the Twins do want to keep Harper around, but he'll be 31 before the season starts, so there isn't really much upside.

Donaldson has worn #20 for most of his career, but started as #29 with the A's and was #27 with Cleveland in 2018 (I forgot he was with the Tribe!). There is a longer commitment from Minnesota to Donaldson than Rosario, but Eddie has been with the team since 2015. I think Donaldson ends up wearing a different number than #20.
