MLB Rule 7.13 (2)

Unless the catcher is in possession of the ball, the catcher cannot block the pathway of the runner as he is attempting to score.  If, in the judgment of the Umpire, the catcher without possession of the ball blocks the pathway of the runner, the Umpire shall call or signal the runner safe.

Notwithstanding the above, it shall not be considered a violation of this Rule 7.13 if the catcher blocks the pathway of the runner in order to field a throw, and the Umpire determines that the catcher could not have fielded the ball without blocking the pathway of the runner and that contact with the runner was unavoidable.

You had that memorized???

so... it’s a rule in name only?

I'm not watching the game, so I just have to rely on you folks (gulp) to get a feel for the action. Was Sano's out at home close or clearly blocking?

He was clearly out, but it was close, and a terrific throw right down the line past Sano, and a terrific catch by the catcher on a hop.

Some of us feel the catcher may have been blocking the plate before he caught the ball. Paragraph two of the rule might come into play, though, as he was sort of moving to field the throw.

Catcher kicked out his foot and blocked the plate before the ball got to him. Was pretty clear cut to me (but they don't pay me to decide what plays to challenge, so what do I know?)

Probably at least a little bit more than the person who decided not to challenge it.

Probably means it's a judgment call by the home plate umpire. What one considers as blocking the plate may not be viewed the same by another.

It was a bang-bang play in real time. Slow motion makes it look like McCann was blocking the plate. An instance of tech influencing how a play is perceived.

Driving home today, I was stopped at a light and saw two hearses come through the intersection ahead of me. I thought that was a bit odd, but didn't think too much of it, until I saw, following the hearses, a somber guy walking a dog, and a couple dozen men trailing him. All were pretty clearly following the hearses.

Well, I just had to know what was going on, so I followed them. When they got to the cemetary, I couldn't help myself...I went up to the guy walking the dog, and asked him was was going on.

"Well, that's my wife in the first hearse." he said.

"Oh, I'm terribly sorry. If you don't mind my asking, what happened?"

"My dog bit her, and she died."

"Oh that's too bad," I said. "And the second hearse?"

"My mother in law," he said. "Same thing."

I thought a bit, and asked "Can I borrow your dog?"

"Get in line."

In real time it was a play that immediately made me want to see it in slow motion.

The only thing that could be questioned was if catcher James McCann... Needed that Former Senator Larry Craig wide stance to field the ball.

I say he didn't... Nor did Larry Craig.
